Here’s a look at how the DevOps world is evolving now.

It’s 2017, and Docker containers and continuous delivery are old news.

More innovative developments are now shaping the world of DevOps.

They include:

  • Serverless computing. Serverless computing is not new. Serverless platforms have been around since the mid-2000s. But modern serverless services, such AWS Lambdaand OpenWhisk, have made serverless computing more accessible and cost-efficient. Organizations seeking leaner, meaner solutions for deploying applications will increasingly look toward serverless computing.
  • Self-healing and NoOps. Automation has always been an important component of DevOps. As DevOps tools mature, however, their automation capabilities are reaching new levels. We are moving toward a NoOps world. NoOps means that infrastructure provisioning and application management become so automated that human intervention ceases to be necessary.
  • Shift-left everythingShift-left is a DevOps term that refers to the idea of moving software delivery operations to the “left” of the continuous delivery chain. In other words, the processes are performed earlier in the development cycle. Shifting processes like quality assurance testing, security reviews and compliance enforcement to the left enables faster feedback and faster bug detection. The shift-left concept is becoming an increasingly important way to get even more out of continuous delivery.
  • DevSecOps. In many organizations, security teams missed the DevOps train. Security operations remained in a silo, isolated from other software delivery processes. The DevSecOps movement, which is now going mainstream, aims to change that.
  • DataOps. Like security experts, data specialists have not traditionally been plugged into the DevOps philosophy. That is now changing, too, as DevOps principles are extended to the data storage and analytics ecosystem. By integrating all of the operations required to manage and interpret data, organizations can achieve the same efficiencies for data operations that DevOps provides for software operations.

These are just some of the trends that will drive the next phase of innovation in the DevOps ecosystem.
