Unifying Agile and DevOps Through Value Stream Management

At the Agile 2019 conference in Washington D.C., CollabNet VersionOne announced significant new capabilities across its enterprise Agile and DevOps product portfolio. The releases target organizations looking to bridge Agile planning workflows and DevOps delivery pipelines into a single, integrated value stream.

The company showcased enhancements to three core offerings: VersionOne for Agile management, Continuum for DevOps pipeline orchestration, and the combined VS solution, which integrates both platforms into a unified software delivery lifecycle tool.

“High performing software organizations are bridging Agile and DevOps initiatives together through common goals that focus on business value. To help customers deliver software that impacts the bottom-line, we continue to add new functionality that supports teams and the need for organization-wide, data-driven workflows.”

Flint Brenton, CEO, CollabNet VersionOne

What Was Announced: Key New Capabilities

CollabNet VersionOne highlighted five specific feature additions across its product suite:

  • VersionOne ECHO – Synchronization between VersionOne and other ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) tools, enabling data consistency across planning environments.
  • VersionOne Portfolio Level Dependency Board – A visualization layer for tracking inter-team and cross-portfolio dependencies at scale, supporting frameworks like SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework).
  • VersionOne Progress Data Visibility in Continuum – Surfaces Agile progress metrics directly within the Continuum DevOps platform, giving delivery teams a shared view of work status without switching tools.
  • VS Exchange – A marketplace for custom and preconfigured extensions and workflows spanning both Continuum and VersionOne, enabling teams to tailor their toolchain integrations.
  • Continuum TestDrive Improvements – Streamlined provisioning within the Continuum TestDrive environment to reduce onboarding friction for new users evaluating the platform.

The VS Platform: Bridging Agile Planning and DevOps Delivery

The flagship VS solution combines VersionOne’s Agile planning strengths with Continuum’s pipeline orchestration capabilities. The goal is to extend visibility and control beyond a sprint’s “done” definition and into the full software delivery pipeline — covering version control, CI/CD, infrastructure provisioning, and testing tooling in one unified interface.

This kind of end-to-end visibility is central to Value Stream Management (VSM), a discipline focused on measuring and improving the flow of business value from idea through production deployment. By unifying disparate DevOps tools under a single workflow layer, CollabNet VersionOne aimed to give enterprise teams the data they need to make prioritization decisions based on business value rather than technical throughput alone.

Enterprise Scale and Agile Framework Support

A recurring theme across the announcements was support for Agile at scale. The Portfolio Level Dependency Board and improved SAFe framework alignment signal that CollabNet VersionOne’s target audience is large enterprises running multiple Agile Release Trains (ARTs) or coordinating dozens of teams under a program increment (PI) planning model.

The ECHO synchronization feature addresses a common pain point in large organizations: Agile planning data living in one tool while development execution data lives in another, creating silos that slow decision-making. By automating synchronization between VersionOne and external ALM systems, ECHO aimed to reduce the manual overhead of keeping planning and execution data aligned.

Conference Context

CollabNet VersionOne described itself as a founding sponsor of the Agile Alliance conference, with continuous participation spanning more than a decade at the time of this announcement. The company demonstrated its new software at booth #102 during Agile 2019, held August 5–9, 2019 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park in Washington D.C.
