Sider Expands Automated Code Review to GitLab
Tokyo-based Sleeek Corporation, which develops productivity tooling for software teams, announced that its automated code review service Sider now supports GitLab through a new offering called Sider Enterprise for GitLab. Previously limited to GitHub, Sider can now be deployed against self-hosted GitLab instances, opening the platform to a wider range of enterprise and embedded-systems development teams.
At the same time, Sleeek expanded Sider’s language support to include Python, C/C++, and C#. This broadens the tool’s applicability well beyond web development into manufacturing, embedded software, Windows application development, and core systems work.
Why GitLab Support Matters
Over the past several years, many organizations have migrated their version control workflows from centralized SVN to distributed Git systems — most commonly GitHub and GitLab. GitLab is particularly common in enterprises that require self-hosted, on-premise deployments for security and compliance reasons.
Sider’s original GitHub-only support excluded a large portion of the developer ecosystem. After receiving repeated requests for GitLab compatibility, Sleeek built Sider Enterprise for GitLab specifically targeting on-premise deployments. According to Sleeek, the new offering supports both:
- GitLab Enterprise Edition (self-hosted)
- GitLab Community Edition (self-hosted)
How Sider Works
Sider integrates into a Git-based development workflow by analyzing source code on each pull or merge request. It automatically detects problems — such as style violations, unused variables, potential overflows, or deviations from industry coding standards — and reports them directly to the developer before human reviewers are involved.
This automation reduces the manual burden of code review, helps enforce consistent standards across teams, and allows senior engineers to focus on architectural and logic concerns rather than surface-level issues.
According to Sleeek, Sider is used in more than 67 countries worldwide.
Real-World Usage: Fixstars Corporation
Sleeek cited Fixstars Corporation, a software acceleration services company operating primarily in the manufacturing and automotive industries, as an early adopter of Sider Enterprise for GitLab. Fixstars deployed Sider on embedded software projects written in C++ and machine learning projects in Python.
Key results reported by Sleeek from Fixstars’ usage:
- Developers were able to install Sider on relevant projects in approximately 3 minutes.
- Merge request and code review workflows were automated.
- Code review time was reduced by 30–50% (as reported by Sleeek; this figure has not been independently verified).
Supported Programming Languages
As of the August 2020 announcement, Sider supports the following languages:
- Ruby
- PHP
- JavaScript
- TypeScript
- CSS
- Java
- Kotlin
- Go
- Python
- Swift
- C/C++
- C#
- Shell script
- Dockerfile
- Markdown
Beyond per-language linting, Sider offers more advanced static analysis capabilities for certain languages. For C/C++ in particular, Sleeek highlights:
- Unused variable detection
- Integer overflow detection via data flow analysis
- Compliance checking against standards such as MISRA C and CERT C
Language-agnostic analyses are also available, including spell checking and support for user-defined custom rules.
Supported Platforms
| Platform | Supported Editions |
|---|---|
| GitHub | GitHub.com, GitHub Enterprise Cloud, GitHub Enterprise Server |
| GitLab | Enterprise Edition (self-hosted), Community Edition (self-hosted) |
Pricing (as of August 2020)
At the time of announcement, Sider Enterprise for GitLab was priced at $1,440 USD per year for 10 seats. Pricing structures and available tiers may have changed since this announcement. Check the Sider website for current pricing and feature comparisons across editions.
Summary
Sider Enterprise for GitLab represents a meaningful step for teams that need automated code review tooling but are locked into self-hosted GitLab for compliance or infrastructure reasons. The addition of C/C++ and C# support also extends Sider’s reach into domains like embedded systems and enterprise application development that were previously underserved by web-focused code quality tools.
For DevOps teams evaluating code review automation, Sider’s GitLab integration is worth considering alongside alternatives such as SonarQube, Codacy, and ReviewDog — particularly if MISRA C or CERT C compliance checking is a requirement.
