Thales Brings GSMA-Certified eSIM Management to Google Cloud

Thales has deployed what it describes as the world’s first GSMA-certified eSIM activation solution on Google Cloud. The move is designed to give telecom operators a globally scalable, secure, and compliant platform for managing embedded SIM (eSIM) subscriptions across smartphones, tablets, wearables, and IoT devices.

The announcement underscores a broader industry shift: as eSIM adoption accelerates — driven by new device categories and emerging IoT use cases — operators need infrastructure that can scale dynamically without compromising on security or regulatory compliance.

Why eSIM Scalability Matters Now

eSIM technology replaces the traditional, physical SIM card with a programmable chip embedded directly in a device. This enables remote provisioning — operators can activate, switch, or manage subscriptions over the air, without requiring a physical SIM swap. The implications for IoT, enterprise mobility, and consumer devices are significant.

At the time of this announcement, ABI Research projected that approximately one billion eSIM-capable devices would be shipped annually by 2024. That growth creates a management challenge: telecom operators must handle massive volumes of subscription activations, profile downloads, and data updates across a highly distributed device base.

The Thales eSIM Remote Subscription Platform on Google Cloud

Thales responded to this challenge by creating a public cloud-based version of its eSIM Remote Subscription Platform. In its initial deployment, the platform runs on Google Cloud, which is available in more than 200 countries and territories. Key characteristics of the solution include:

  • GSMA Certification: Thales implemented security standards specifically designed to meet GSMA certification requirements in a public cloud environment — a meaningful milestone, as GSMA standards govern interoperability and security across the global mobile ecosystem.
  • Auto-Scaling and Capacity Management: The platform leverages Google Cloud’s elastic infrastructure to scale automatically in response to subscription volume, reducing the operational overhead on operators during demand spikes.
  • Data Protection and Privacy Compliance: The solution incorporates data analytics capabilities while maintaining compliance with applicable data protection and privacy regulations.
  • Carbon Neutral Infrastructure: Operators also benefit from Google Cloud’s carbon-neutral infrastructure commitments, relevant to sustainability-focused procurement decisions.
  • Global Reach: Availability across Google Cloud’s global region footprint means operators can serve subscribers in diverse geographies under a unified management platform.

Relevance to 5G and IoT Connectivity

Beyond managing today’s consumer eSIM volumes, the platform is positioned as foundational infrastructure for 5G and large-scale IoT deployments. As 5G networks expand cellular connectivity to billions of new devices — from industrial sensors to connected vehicles — remote SIM provisioning at cloud scale becomes a critical operational capability rather than an optional enhancement.

The hybrid infrastructure approach Thales describes is also noteworthy: combining proven on-premises eSIM expertise with Google Cloud’s global reach creates a springboard for standardized, interoperable IoT applications that span multiple operators and geographies.

What Industry Leaders Said

“The combination of Thales and Google Cloud’s global technology expertise is a perfect match to address the challenges of the eSIM market in a very innovative manner. Thales’ new cloud infrastructure enables the expected and significant growth in eSIM-capable devices to be tackled seamlessly. We know Google Cloud’s scalability will be critical with the rise of 5G networks and the cellular network connectivity of billions of IoT devices worldwide.”

Anil Jain, Google Cloud Managing Director — Telecom, Media & Entertainment, Industry Solutions

“By collaborating with Google Cloud teams, we have designed a global service to answer the exponential demand for new eSIM devices. This hybrid infrastructure is a springboard to innovative IoT applications in a standardized and interoperable security framework. By achieving GSMA certification our cloud-based solution provides a trusted and compliant platform for telecom operators.”
