To succeed at DevOps these days, go hybrid

This is a survey of 1,260 DevOps Institute computer managers who find that process skills and knowledge are now the main skills sought for DevOps initiatives, surpassing automation skills, the primary skill sought after in last year’s poll. In addition, DevOps adoption, Agility and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) have gained percentages as essential skills.

In the early stages of DevOps adoption, “the users became acquainted with the technology, its potential benefits and the difficulties of its implementation,” according to the survey authors. “The next logical step is to establish a process and rules by which technology will be used.”

More than 50% of the respondents are still very difficult on the DevOps journey. “DevOps is a fundamental change in the traditional structure of IT. Not only is it the adoption of new technologies, it is also a challenge of organizational transformation with all that it entails with the evangelization of existing accountability silos. It can certainly be perceived as threatening to various comfortable structures in the existing organizational model. ”

The DevOps topologies used mainly to date are a great challenge. The survey’s authors identified three different models: the most useful is the DevOps team silo or the DevOps promotion model where there is a separate DevOps team between operators and operators. The second most commonly used mode is the DevOps collaboration model, where developing is the task of everyone, and the third most deployed team model is the DevOps toolkit where the DevOps team is responsible for the tool you need.

Companies are jointly looking for growing hybrid capabilities to advance with DevOps, the survey shows. “Ideal candidates for a DevOps role at this stage require a holistic view and understanding of the issues that developers, operating teams and automation have.” This is because “human, process, knowledge and automation skills are equally important.” DevOps Hybrid Specialists leverage the skills of a wide area of ​​expertise, from technology such as cloud infrastructure, to functionalities such as computing, to processes and framework skills like SRE or Agile. “
