Source:-https://securityboulevard.com/ One of the main contributors to the weak security posture of development environments is the complexity and knowledge gap […]

Source:-https://securityboulevard.com/

One of the main contributors to the weak security posture of development environments is the complexity and knowledge gap created by the number of tools and services involved in this process. With more than a hundred CI/CD tools to choose from and hundreds of plugins and services connected to those tools, no wonder security teams are having a hard time keeping tabs on the amount of information and staying on top of the security requirements of these environments.

It is not rare to see a CI/CD pipeline which includes 10 to 20 different tools and services; some of these cloud-based, others open source tools with a variety of plugins installed. It is impossible to manually keep track of this complexity, and it often results in an exposure of your environment, code, secrets and network through those tools and plugins’ vulnerabilities.

The DevOps tool sprawl continues as more and more companies expand their DevOps products and services. Development teams take advantage of these new CI/CD tools and services to build their pipelines and enhance the process, but by doing so they are also increasing their exposure to risks. Add to that the limited collaboration between development and security teams, and the lack of visibility and control over these services and it’s no surprise that CISOs and application security managers look puzzled when asked about the security of their CI/CD pipelines.

Hackers Continue to Damage Enterprises
The Japanese e-commerce giant Mercari and project management tool provider Monday.com are both victims of the Codecov attack which has already affected hundreds of major companies including HashiCorp, Confluent, Twilio and Rapid7, among others.

Mercari stated that the attack compromised records including financial and personal information from customers and partners, including:

17,085 records related to customer sales that occurred between August 5, 2014, and January 20, 2014, containing bank codes, branch codes, account numbers, account holder (kana) and transfer amount.
7,966 records of Mercari’s business partners, including names, birth dates, affiliation, e-mail address, etc.
2,615 employee records, including those working for a Mercari subsidiary. Names of some employees as of April 2021, company email address, employee ID, telephone number, date of birth, etc.
Just few days before, Monday.com had disclosed that it, too was impacted by the Codecov supply chain attack. After their investigation, they found unauthorized actors had gained access to a read-only copy of their source code.

Minimize Risk and Complexity to Avoid Supply Chain Attacks
The recent series of supply chain attacks affected tens of thousands of companies. Nowadays, CI/CD pipelines form the backbone of modern DevOps operations and, as we see this trend continue, we cannot ignore the urgent need to protect customers’ development environments from these pervasive attacks.

The complexity and collaborative nature of these environments provides an easy target for attackers, who can take advantage of vulnerabilities and misconfigurations within pipeline plugins and services. By gaining access to the CI/CD pipeline, attackers can hijack your updates, inject malicious code and gain a backdoor to your and your customers’ environments.

The latest Codecov attack showed us two alarming facts:

Attackers can gain easy access to your most valuable data through your pipeline’s many services and plugins, which are usually not monitored.
These attacks can go unnoticed for months, impacting thousands of companies and inflicting massive damage.
Organizations must proactively secure their software supply chain against such attacks to prevent access via these backdoors. This requires taking into account the complexity of the development environments, the various third-party plugins and services connected to it, and the sophisticated nature of today’s supply chain attacks.

Building a Strong CI/CD Pipeline Security Posture
Security and DevOps teams need to watch their pipeline dependencies closely to identify and respond to vulnerabilities and attacks against those add-ons, services and tools. Whenever a new service is connected to your pipeline, they need to be checked and monitored constantly for any vulnerability or suspicious activity. Any suspicion should automatically trigger an alert to the appropriate stakeholders to verify the integrity of the service and ensure there is no risk associated with it.

Source:-https://www.fool.com Three signs this stock is a long-term winner Brian Withers (Twilio): Twilio is getting caught up in the tech […]

Source:-https://www.fool.com

Three signs this stock is a long-term winner
Brian Withers (Twilio): Twilio is getting caught up in the tech stock sell-off as investors may be cashing out to move to more conservative investments. This is a short-sighted approach and these sellers are going to miss out on the massive long-term prospects of this tech stock. With a pivot to become a customer engagement platform, the best days for the company are still ahead. Here are three recent events that show why.

The first event was the company’s investor day presentation on Oct. 1, where management shared its long term vision and plans for the next few years. In short, the opportunity to grow is massive. Twilio has just a small portion of the potential market across all its product segments, its customer verticals, and in all regions around the globe. Given this huge opportunity, management committed that it would be able to achieve 30%-plus top-line annual growth for the next four years. This declaration should give investors confidence that the company plans to follow through on its growth plans and will be a much bigger platform in the years ahead.

The second event occurred on Oct. 12 when the company announced its $3.2 billion all-stock acquisition of Segment, a customer data platform company. This merger enables Twilio to tap into a deep set of customer insights to better inform its messaging applications, improve the platform’s ability to engage with customers, and provide more personalized messages. Segment brings an additional $17 billion in addressable market opportunity. With the massive success Twilio’s had in growing its customer base, this merger should help accelerate its top line even more.

The third event was its earnings release on Oct. 26. This report provided the cherry on top of what was an ice cream sundae of an October for the company. The 52% year-over-year growth beat management’s increased guidance to hit a record $448 million in quarterly revenue. This incredible growth was driven by existing customers and new customer acquisitions. Existing customers drove its dollar-based net retention to 137% by expanding into new offerings and growing usage of their existing messaging products. The company added 8,000 customers in the quarter to hit a record 208,000, up 21% year over year. The company projected it would achieve 36% to 38% year-over-year top-line growth in the upcoming fourth quarter, but it’s likely that it will beat those projections, too.

This customer engagement platform is on a roll. The investor day highlighted this growth company still has massive opportunities ahead. Its smart acquisition of Segment expanded its already huge addressable market even more. And its continued solid execution from its most recent earnings call makes this software platform a long-term buy. With the recent sell-off, now’s a good chance to pick up some shares at a discount.

Datadog: Explosive growth at a discount
Danny Vena (Datadog): You’ve likely heard the old saying, “Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.” Given the wholesale sell-off within the technology sector over the past several weeks, the saying is particularly applicable to the current situation. The rotation out of tech and software stocks that began in mid-October has resulted in a number of bargains, presenting investors with a number of compelling opportunities. I think that’s the case with Datadog.

The stock had been on a hot streak this year, boasting more than triple-digit gains between January and Oct. 13. Since then the stock has lost more than 25% of its value and nothing about Datadog’s growth story has changed.

The results from earlier this week tell the tale. For the third quarter, DataDog reported revenue of $155 million, up 61% year over year, only a slight deceleration from the 68% top-line growth it delivered in the second quarter. The company also generated a small adjusted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter of $0.05, not bad for a company that went public just over a year ago. Both metrics sailed past analysts’ consensus estimates, which called for revenue of $144.3 million and EPS of $0.01.

The company also continued its strong track record of attracting new clients, with large, more lucrative enterprise businesses at the top of the list. Customers representing annual revenue of more than $100,000 grew to 1,107, growing 52% from 727 in the prior-year quarter. At the same time, its overall client base climbed to 13,100, up 38%.

Another secret to Datadog’s success is that once customers try out its services, they not only tend to stick around, but also spend more money. The company reported a dollar-based retention rate — which measures the level of spending by existing customers — of above 130% for the 13th consecutive quarter. Put another way, existing clients spent 30% more over the past year than they did in the preceding 12 months.

Datadog’s lofty valuation probably contributed to its decline. Even after its recent haircut, the stock trades for roughly 52 times trailing-12-month sales.

That said, given Datadog’s high-caliber growth, I’d argue it’s worth its premium price tag and it’s just taking a breather before climbing to even loftier heights. The stock might be worth a look at its recent discounted price.

HubSpot’s fantastic year isn’t over yet
Chris Neiger (HubSpot): HubSpot’s software may not be well known to the average investor, but it’s playing a critical role for small businesses, especially during the pandemic. HubSpot’s inbound marketing software helps companies manage their current customer relationships while also providing online tools to acquire new ones.

With HubSpot focusing on small and medium-sized businesses, you might assume that the company has taken a hit this year as many small businesses have suffered from the negative economic effects of COVID-19. But HubSpot has proved to be very resilient and in the third quarter (reported on Nov. 5) HubSpot’s sales spike 32% and adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $0.28, both of which outpaced the company’s own guidance and beat Wall Street’s expectations.

Even during this tough economic time, HubSpot grew its subscription revenue by 32% in the third quarter and boosted its total customers by an impressive 39% year over year. Part of the company’s success this year came from its ability to work with businesses that were struggling, offering them free premium services or reduced rates in order to help them out. That type of strategy may seem counter intuitive for some businesses, but it’s helped HubSpot build a large customer base that will likely be loyal to the company for years to come.

Even with the difficult economic situation, HubSpot’s management said full-year 2020 revenue will be 28% higher than it was last year. Investors have taken notice of HubSpot’s phenomenal growth this year and have pushed the company’s share price up an impressive 122% year to date.

And while it may seem logical to think that there’s no more room for current investors to benefit, consider that HubSpot’s massive customer growth this year will likely boost sales and earnings down the line. When the pandemic is behind us and companies begin spending more money to grow their businesses, they’ll likely do so using many of HubSpot’s services that helped them get through this difficult year.

Where to invest $1,000 right now
Before you consider HubSpot, you’ll want to hear this.

Investing legends and Motley Fool Co-founders David and Tom Gardner just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy right now… and HubSpot wasn’t one of them.

An overview of the SaaS software market landscape in 2020, covering leading vendors, product categories, application segments, and regional dynamics shaping the industry through 2027.

SaaS Software Market in 2020: Key Players, Segments, and Growth Drivers

The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market entered the 2020s at an inflection point. Accelerated cloud adoption, the sudden shift to remote work caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and enterprise digital-transformation initiatives converged to reshape demand across every vertical. This article summarises the major dimensions of the SaaS software market as analysed in research published around mid-2020, covering key vendors, product segments, application areas, and regional dynamics for the forecast period through 2027.

Note: The market data below is drawn from a third-party market research summary (originally attributed to Market Research Intellect via scientect). Specific revenue figures, growth rates, and market-size projections were not included in the source material and are therefore not reproduced here.

COVID-19 and Its Impact on SaaS Demand

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and export-import activity across most technology sectors in 2020. For SaaS vendors, however, the disruption was largely positive in the short term: organisations that had delayed cloud migration found themselves with an urgent need for collaboration, remote-access, and business-continuity tools. Categories such as video conferencing, HR management, and e-commerce platforms saw demand spikes, while legacy on-premises software vendors faced accelerating customer churn toward cloud alternatives.

The longer-term post-COVID-19 scenario anticipated in 2020 research pointed to a sustained structural shift: IT budgets that once favoured capital expenditure on on-premises infrastructure were increasingly redirected toward operational expenditure on subscription-based SaaS platforms.

Key SaaS Vendors Shaping the Market

The following companies were identified as major players in the SaaS software market as of 2020. Each brings a distinct product focus and customer base:

Microsoft – Dominates enterprise productivity and collaboration (Microsoft 365, Teams, Azure-based SaaS services).

Salesforce – Pioneer of cloud CRM; also expanded into analytics, marketing automation, and integration platforms.

Adobe – Creative Cloud and Document Cloud SaaS offerings serving creative professionals and enterprises.

ServiceNow – IT service management (ITSM) and workflow automation for large enterprises.

Workday – Cloud-native ERP and HCM (Human Capital Management) targeting mid-to-large enterprises.

Intuit – SMB-focused financial and accounting SaaS (QuickBooks Online, TurboTax).

Splunk – Machine data analytics and security information and event management (SIEM).

Atlassian – Developer and team collaboration tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket).

Shopify – E-commerce platform as a service for merchants of all sizes.

Zoom – Video communications platform; saw exceptional growth during pandemic-driven remote-work adoption.

Veeva Systems – Vertical SaaS for life sciences, covering CRM, content management, and regulatory compliance.

Datadog – Cloud monitoring, observability, and security for DevOps and infrastructure teams.

Slack – Business messaging and workflow integration (acquired by Salesforce in 2021).

Twilio – Communications platform as a service (CPaaS) enabling programmable SMS, voice, and email.

This vendor mix illustrates the breadth of the SaaS market: from horizontal productivity suites to highly specialised vertical platforms, and from consumer-facing tools to deep infrastructure-layer services used by DevOps and security teams.

SaaS Product Categories

The market is commonly segmented by the type of business function the software addresses. Major categories identified in 2020 market analysis include:

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) – Sales pipeline management, customer support, and marketing automation.

Web Collaboration – Real-time document editing, video conferencing, and team messaging.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) – Integrated management of core business processes including finance, procurement, and inventory.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) – Demand forecasting, logistics, and supplier relationship management delivered via cloud.

On-Demand HR Solutions – Payroll, benefits administration, recruitment, and performance management.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) – Engineering change management, product data management, and compliance tracking.

Document Management (DM) – Cloud-based storage, version control, and e-signature workflows.

Application Segments

Beyond product type, the market is also segmented by the primary application or business domain being served:

Business operations – Core process automation, analytics, and reporting.

Human Resources – Workforce management, learning and development, and compliance.

Information Management – Data governance, knowledge bases, and enterprise search.

For DevOps practitioners, information management and business operations SaaS are particularly relevant: platforms such as Datadog, Splunk, and Twilio sit at the intersection of these segments, providing the observability, security, and communication APIs that underpin modern software delivery pipelines.

Regional Market Landscape

The SaaS market in 2020 was global in reach but uneven in maturity. Key regions identified in market research included:

North America – The largest single market, home to most major SaaS vendors and characterised by high enterprise cloud adoption rates.

Europe – Strong growth tempered by data-sovereignty regulations (GDPR) that influence vendor selection and deployment architecture.

Asia-Pacific – Fast-growing region driven by SMB digitisation in markets such as India, Australia, and Southeast Asia, alongside large enterprise adoption in Japan and South Korea.

Latin America – Emerging SaaS market with growing startup ecosystems and increasing cloud infrastructure investment.

Middle East and Africa – Nascent but expanding, particularly in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries investing in smart-city and e-government initiatives.

Key Market Drivers

Several structural factors drove SaaS growth in 2020 and were expected to sustain momentum through the forecast period:

Lower total cost of ownership – Eliminating on-premises hardware, licensing, and maintenance costs reduces upfront capital expenditure.

Scalability and elasticity – Organisations can provision additional seats or capacity on demand without infrastructure procurement delays.

Continuous delivery of updates – Vendors ship improvements automatically, removing the customer burden of patch management and upgrades.

Remote and distributed workforce enablement – Browser-based and mobile-first SaaS tools require no VPN or desktop installation, making them natural fits for geographically dispersed teams.

API-first integrations – Modern SaaS platforms expose well-documented APIs, enabling composable architectures and reducing integration cost.

Data and analytics capabilities – Cloud scale allows vendors to build machine-learning features directly into products, delivering intelligence that would be prohibitively expensive to build on-premises.

Key Market Restraints

Despite strong tailwinds, several challenges moderated growth expectations:

Data security and compliance concerns – Regulated industries (healthcare, finance, government) faced additional scrutiny when moving sensitive data to third-party SaaS platforms.

Vendor lock-in risk – Proprietary data formats and limited portability between platforms raised switching costs over time.

Connectivity dependency – SaaS usability degrades without reliable high-bandwidth internet, limiting adoption in regions with inconsistent connectivity.

SaaS sprawl and cost management – As the number of subscriptions per organisation multiplied, managing spend, redundancy, and shadow IT became a significant operational challenge.

What This Means for DevOps Teams

For engineers and platform teams, the growth of the SaaS market has practical implications beyond vendor selection:

Observability tooling – Platforms like Datadog and Splunk have moved from nice-to-have to essential infrastructure as distributed SaaS architectures increase the complexity of diagnosing production issues.

Identity and access management – Managing authentication across dozens of SaaS tools requires robust SSO and directory-federation strategies (e.g., SAML, OIDC).

Infrastructure as code for SaaS configuration – Tools like Terraform now offer providers for many SaaS platforms, enabling teams to manage SaaS resource configuration declaratively alongside cloud infrastructure.

FinOps discipline – As SaaS subscription costs scale with team size and usage, engineering organisations increasingly own a portion of the SaaS budget and need tooling to track and optimise spend.

Summary

The SaaS software market in 2020 was defined by accelerating cloud adoption, a COVID-19-driven demand surge, and a maturing vendor ecosystem spanning CRM, ERP, collaboration, observability, and vertical-specific platforms. Companies like Microsoft, Salesforce, Workday, Datadog, and Twilio represent the breadth of what SaaS has become: not a single category but an entire delivery model reshaping how enterprise software is built, distributed, and consumed. Understanding the market structure — its segments, drivers, and constraints — helps DevOps and platform engineering teams make more informed decisions about toolchain composition, vendor risk, and long-term architecture.
