PHP, which stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, is a server-side scripting language that is used to create dynamic web pages. It was originally designed as a tool for managing website content, but it has evolved into a full-fledged programming language. PHP is often embedded within HTML code, allowing developers to mix dynamic and static content seamlessly.

What are the top use cases of PHP?

PHP is a general-purpose language that can be used for a variety of tasks, but it is particularly well-suited for web development.

Here are some of the top use cases of PHP:

Web development: PHP is a popular language for developing web applications. It is used to create the dynamic content that makes web pages interactive. Some of the most popular websites in the world, such as Facebook, Wikipedia, and WordPress, are powered by PHP.

Databases: PHP can be used to interact with databases. This makes it a popular language for developing web applications that need to store and retrieve data. PHP has built-in support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other popular databases.

Command-line scripting: PHP can be used to write command-line scripts. This makes it a popular language for automating tasks. PHP can be used to automate tasks such as file management, system administration, and web scraping.

Application development: PHP can be used to develop desktop and mobile applications. PHP has a built-in GUI toolkit called PHP GUI that makes it easy to develop desktop applications. PHP can also be used to develop mobile applications using frameworks such as Laravel and CodeIgniter.

What are the features of PHP?

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) is a popular scripting language used for web development. It offers a wide range of features that make it suitable for building dynamic and interactive web applications.

Here are some of the key features of PHP:

Server-side scripting: PHP is a server-side scripting language. This means that PHP code is executed on the server before it is sent to the client. This makes it possible to create dynamic web pages that are customized for each user.

Open-source: PHP is an open-source language. This means that the source code for PHP is freely available. This makes it possible for developers to contribute to the development of PHP and to make changes to the language to meet their own needs.

Cross-platform: PHP is a cross-platform language. This means that PHP code can be run on a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and macOS. This makes it possible to develop PHP applications that can be deployed to a variety of platforms.

Easy to learn: PHP is a relatively easy language to learn. This is because PHP has a simple syntax that is similar to other programming languages.

Widely used: PHP is a widely used language. This means that there are a lot of resources available to help you learn PHP and to troubleshoot problems.

Object-oriented: PHP is an object-oriented language. This means that PHP code can be organized into objects, which makes it easier to manage complex applications.

Databases: PHP has built-in support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other popular databases. This makes it easy to interact with databases from PHP code.

Web frameworks: There are a number of popular web frameworks available for PHP. These frameworks make it easy to develop complex web applications.

Security: PHP has a number of security features that help to protect web applications from attacks.

What is the workflow of PHP?

The workflow of PHP development involves a series of steps and activities that guide the process of creating, testing, and deploying PHP-based web applications. While specific workflows can vary based on the project’s complexity and the development team’s practices.

Here are some tips for following a good workflow when writing PHP code:

Use a version control system. This will help you to track changes to your code and to revert to previous versions if necessary.

Write unit tests. Unit tests are small, self-contained tests that check the functionality of your code. They are a great way to ensure that your code is working correctly and to catch errors early.

Use a debugger. A debugger is a tool that allows you to step through your code line by line and inspect the values of variables. This can be very helpful for debugging errors in your code.

Document your code. Commenting on your code is a good way to explain what your code does and to make it easier to understand for other people.

How PHP Works & Architecture?

PHP is an interpreted language, which means that it is not compiled into machine code before it is executed. Instead, the PHP interpreter reads the source code and executes it line by line. This makes PHP very fast to develop with, as you do not need to wait for the code to be compiled before you can see the results.

PHP’s architecture is divided into two main parts: the interpreter and the standard library. The interpreter is responsible for reading and executing the PHP source code. The standard library is a collection of modules that provide a variety of functionality, such as string manipulation, file handling, and mathematical operations.

When you run a PHP program, the interpreter first reads the source code and creates a representation of the program in memory. This representation is called the abstract syntax tree (AST). The AST is then used by the interpreter to execute the program line by line.

The standard library is a collection of modules that are included with the PHP interpreter. These modules provide a variety of functionality, such as string manipulation, file handling, and mathematical operations. The standard library is a very important part of PHP, as it provides a lot of the functionality that is needed to write PHP programs.

Here are some of the key components of PHP’s architecture:

The interpreter: The interpreter is the program that reads and executes PHP source code.

The AST: The AST is a representation of the PHP source code in memory.

The standard library: The standard library is a collection of modules that provide a variety of functionality.

The web server: The web server is the software that delivers PHP pages to users.

How to Install and Configure PHP?

Here are the steps on how to install and configure PHP on Windows and Linux:

Windows

Download the PHP files from the PHP website: https://windows.php.net/download/.

Extract the files to a directory of your choice.

Open the php.ini file in a text editor.

Configure the settings in the php.ini file as needed.

Add the directory where you extracted the PHP files to the PATH environment variable.

Restart your computer.

Linux

Open a terminal window.

Update your packages by running the following command:

sudo apt update

      3. Install PHP by running the following command:

sudo apt install php

      4. Configure PHP by editing the php.ini file.

      5. Restart your computer.

Once PHP is installed and configured, you can test it by creating a simple PHP file.

Here is an example of a simple PHP file:

<?php
echo "Hello, world!";
?>

Save this file as hello_world.php in a directory that is accessible to PHP.

To run the PHP file, open a web browser and navigate to the directory where you saved the file.

The PHP file should display the text “Hello, world!” in your web browser.

For more information on installing and configuring PHP, please refer to the PHP documentation: https://www.php.net/manual/en/install.php.

In this blog, we will talk about Istio how it is useful, and many more.

But first, let’s start with its meaning.

What is Istio?

Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides policy enforcement, traffic management, and telemetry collection.

It runs on Kubernetes, nomad, and console.

It let developers connect, secure, control, monitor, and run a distributed microservice architecture (MSA).

Service mesh is a way to connect all of your services with one consistent network and observability layer STO.

In other words, the service mesh is a network of the microservices like how services A and B talk with each other.

As the service mesh grows things get complex and you need to have a way to control how different services like A and B talk with each other. Here Istio comes in.

Features of Istio

Load balancing – It allows HTTP, TCP, and WebSocket trafficking where you can control tication is being done between services A and B or how things come from outside in.

Fine-grain control – It makes sure that you have rules, retries, failovers, you even fault injection.

You have the wonderful place of how you specifically talk to service A and not service B in certain situations.

Access control – To make sure that the policies you have for your cloud-native application are correct and enforceable.

Visibility – You have logging and graphing things you can put in front of them to be able to see how everything is working. It’s all free and comes together when you install Istio.

           Automatic metrics to be able to do how you expected to make it happen.

How Istio is useful?

There are a few points mentioned below that shows how Istio is useful: –

Istio allows organizations to secure, connect, monitor, and run distributed microservices.

Attain consistent service networking.

Improves the performance of the application.

It makes simple service-to-service network operations like traffic management, authorization, encryption, auditing as well as observability.

Secure cloud-native apps

Manage traffic effectively

Monitor service mesh

Easily get deployed with Kubernetes and virtual machines

Simplify load balancing with modern features

Apply policies to provide insight into network performance issues

Secures service-to-service and pod-to-pod communication.

Istio finds the challenges that might developers and operators face with a distributed or microservices architecture.

Istio uses an extended version of the Envoy proxy and Envoy mediates all inbound and outbound traffic for all services in the service mesh. Envoy proxies are the only Istio components that interact with data plane traffic.

Istio helps to manage microservices through two major components:

Data Plane

Control Plane

Training Place

I would like to tell you about one of the best places to get trained and certification in DevOps, DevSecOps, SRE, AIOps, MLOps, GitOps, AI, Machine learning and Istio courses is DevOpsSchool. This Platform offers the best trainers who have good experience in DevOps and also they provide a friendly eco-environment where you can learn comfortably and free to ask anything regarding your course and they are always ready to help you out whenever you need, that’s why they provide pdf’s, video, etc. to help you.

Source:cloudcomputing-news.net

Microsoft is to acquire Movere, a SaaS platform which increases visibility on IT environments, the companies have announced.

Movere – whom industry watchers may remember until last year as Unified Logic – aims to ‘capture, integrate and analyse the data [companies] need to make smart decisions about their IT environment’, as the company puts it.

The company’s dashboard organically scans global environments at a highest rate of 1,000 servers per hour and focuses across multiple parts of the cloud migration journey, as well as cybersecurity.

Movere has been a partner of Microsoft for more than 10 years and will join the Azure team as part of Azure Migrate, according to a Microsoft blog post.

“We’re committed to providing our customers with a comprehensive experience for migrating existing applications and infrastructure to Azure, which include the right tools, processes, and programs,” wrote Jeremy Winter, partner director for Azure management. “As part of that ongoing investment, we’re excited to welcome the leadership, talent, technology, and deep expertise Movere has built in enabling customers’ journey to the cloud over the last 11 years.”

For Kristin Ireland, CEO of Movere, the acquisition was a time of reflection on the company’s journey to date.

“On our journey to cloud, we made mistakes that cost us valuable time and resources that we didn’t have,” Ireland wrote. “As we spread our wings in the cloud, we realised the cloud was the embodiment of Movere – the unleashing of business potential through migration – we knew we had to be part of that journey for as many customers as we could.

“We passionately believe the cloud journey is what opens the door to market disrupting ideas and opportunities; to be part of that journey with customers and partners is a privilege,” added Ireland. “Thank you to our partners and customers for allowing us to be part of that journey thus far; we are so excited to continue to be faster and better for you as part of the Microsoft Azure team.”

The move represents the first cloudy acquisition of 2019 for Microsoft, aside from investing in big data analytics platform Databricks back in February. This year has been relatively quiet thus far on the acquisition front from the big two; Amazon Web Services (AWS) acquired CloudEndure for a reported $250 million at the start of this year, with undisclosed offers for TSO Logic and E8 Storage since.

Google Cloud, meanwhile, has made more of a statement around its enterprise ambitions with three acquisitions. The company bought business intelligence platform Looker for an all-cash $2.6bn transaction in June, alongside deals for Alooma and Elastifile in February and July respectively.

An overview of the global DevOps tool market as of 2019, covering major vendors such as Puppet Labs, Chef, Docker, Red Hat, and Microsoft, along with market segmentation by type, application, and region.

The global DevOps tool market entered 2019 as one of the fastest-growing segments in enterprise software, driven by widespread adoption of continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), infrastructure-as-code, and container-based deployments. This article summarises the market structure, leading vendors, segmentation categories, and regional distribution that analysts were tracking at that time.

Market Overview

Industry research published around mid-2019 examined the competitive dynamics, revenue concentration, strategic partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, and growth forecasts for the DevOps toolchain market. The research covered both quantitative metrics—revenue, market share, import/export volumes—and qualitative factors such as vendor SWOT profiles, go-to-market strategies, and technology maturity assessments.

Analysts segmented maturity into three broad capability tiers that reflect how deeply DevOps practices are embedded in an organisation’s toolchain and culture:

DevOps Ready – organisations that have adopted foundational tooling (version control, basic CI) but have not yet integrated the full delivery pipeline.

DevOps Enabled – teams running end-to-end automated pipelines covering build, test, and deployment with measurable feedback loops.

DevOps Capable – mature organisations with continuous delivery, automated security (DevSecOps), observability, and self-service infrastructure at scale.

Leading Vendors in the DevOps Tool Market

The following companies were identified as significant players shaping the global DevOps tool market in 2019. They represent a mix of pure-play DevOps vendors, open-source commercial sponsors, and large enterprise platform providers:

Puppet Labs – configuration management and infrastructure automation (Puppet Enterprise)

Chef (now Progress Chef) – infrastructure and application automation via code-driven policies

Docker Inc – container runtime, image registry, and orchestration tooling

Red Hat – enterprise Linux, Ansible automation, and OpenShift Kubernetes platform

Atlassian – collaboration and CI/CD tooling (Jira, Bitbucket, Bamboo)

SaltStack – event-driven IT automation and configuration management

VMware – vRealize Automation and Tanzu application platform

DBmaestro – database DevOps and release automation

Market Segmentation by Application Industry

DevOps tooling adoption varied significantly across verticals. The primary industry segments covered in 2019 market research included:

IT and Software – the largest adopter segment, encompassing SaaS vendors, systems integrators, and technology companies running high-frequency release cycles.

Telecom – carriers and network equipment providers adopting DevOps for OSS/BSS modernisation and NFV/SDN deployments.

BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) – regulated institutions investing in automated compliance checks, secure pipelines, and faster time-to-market for digital products.

Government and Public Sector – agencies adopting DevSecOps frameworks to modernise legacy systems while meeting strict security and audit requirements.

Regional Market Breakdown

Research covered adoption trends and revenue distribution across five major regions:

Region

Key Markets

North America

United States, Canada, Mexico

Europe

Germany, UK, France, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland

Asia-Pacific

China, India, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Western Asia

South America

Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru

Middle East & Africa

GCC countries, North Africa, South Africa

North America held the largest revenue share at this time, driven by early enterprise adoption, strong venture investment in tooling startups, and the presence of major vendors. The Asia-Pacific region—particularly India and China—was identified as the fastest-growing market, fuelled by a large developer workforce and rapid cloud infrastructure build-out.

Key Areas Covered in Full Market Reports

Comprehensive analyst reports on the DevOps tool market typically deliver the following for enterprise buyers and investors:

Industry overview, market definition, and scope

Historical performance data and compound annual growth rate (CAGR) analysis

Competitive landscape: vendor profiles, market share, and product roadmaps

SWOT analysis for leading players

Segmentation by tool category (SCM, CI/CD, configuration management, monitoring, container orchestration)

Regional revenue breakdown and demand forecasts

Technology maturity curves and adoption barriers

Strategic M&A activity and partnership trends

Investment feasibility and entry-point analysis for new market participants

Policy, regulatory, and compliance considerations by region

What This Means for DevOps Practitioners

For engineering teams and platform architects, market consolidation trends visible in 2019—such as the merger of XebiaLabs, CollabNet, and VersionOne into Digital.ai, or Broadcom’s acquisition of CA Technologies—had direct implications for tool selection and long-term vendor support. Understanding which vendors were growing organically versus through acquisition helps teams assess lock-in risk and roadmap stability.

The segmentation into DevOps Ready, DevOps Enabled, and DevOps Capable tiers also provides a useful self-assessment framework: teams can benchmark their current toolchain maturity and identify the next investment priority—whether that is pipeline automation, policy-as-code, or full observability.

Summary

The 2019 DevOps tool market was characterised by rapid growth, significant M&A activity, and expanding adoption beyond IT into regulated industries such as finance and government. Dominant players like Microsoft, Red Hat, and Atlassian competed alongside focused pure-play vendors. Evaluating tools against organisational maturity tiers and vertical-specific compliance requirements remained the most reliable way to cut through the crowded vendor landscape.

Fairwinds announced the open source release of Polaris, a Kubernetes configuration validation tool designed to help engineering teams avoid common misconfiguration mistakes. Polaris can be run as a self-hosted dashboard, as an admission webhook inside a cluster, or as a command-line tool in a CI/CD pipeline. Fairwinds also offered it as a hosted service for teams that prefer a managed approach.

The motivation behind Polaris is straightforward: Kubernetes exposes an enormous number of configuration options, and the gap between a working cluster and a well-configured cluster is significant. Teams that are new to Kubernetes often omit resource limits, run containers as root, or skip liveness and readiness probes — issues that only become visible under production load.

Core Components

Polaris ships with two primary operational modes:

Dashboard: A web UI that connects to a running cluster and scores deployed workloads against a set of best-practice checks. Each check is rated by severity, giving teams a prioritised view of configuration debt across namespaces and deployments.

Admission Webhook: A validating admission webhook that intercepts resource creation and update requests. Depending on how Polaris is configured, it can either warn teams about policy violations or actively block non-compliant workloads from reaching a production cluster.

A command-line interface is also available, enabling Polaris checks to be embedded directly into a CI/CD pipeline so configuration problems are caught before a manifest ever reaches the cluster.

What Polaris Checks For

Polaris evaluates workload manifests against a configurable set of checks. At launch, the built-in checks covered areas including:

CPU and memory resource requests and limits being set on containers

Containers running as root or with unnecessary privilege escalation

Missing liveness and readiness probes

Use of the latest image tag instead of a pinned version

Host networking, host PID, and host IPC settings

Read-only root filesystems

Teams can customise the severity thresholds — marking certain checks as warnings rather than hard failures — and can extend or override the default policy file to match their own standards.

Why Kubernetes Misconfiguration Is a Real Problem

Kubernetes is highly flexible by design, which means that a cluster can be operational without being secure, efficient, or reliable. Common misconfiguration consequences include:

Node instability: Containers without resource limits can consume all available CPU or memory on a node, triggering evictions across unrelated workloads.

Security exposure: Containers running as root or with privilege escalation create an enlarged attack surface if a workload is compromised.

Deployment fragility: Missing health probes mean Kubernetes cannot accurately determine whether a pod is ready to serve traffic, increasing the risk of routing requests to unhealthy instances.

Cluster sprawl: Without automated guardrails, teams working independently may provision multiple single-purpose clusters that each carry their own misconfiguration risk.

Tools like Polaris shift configuration quality checks left — catching problems at the manifest or CI stage rather than after a production incident.

Polaris in a CI/CD Pipeline

Fairwinds designed Polaris with CI/CD integration in mind. The CLI can be pointed at a directory of Kubernetes manifests or at a Helm chart output and will return a pass/fail result that a pipeline can act on. A typical integration looks like this:

# Run Polaris audit against local manifests and fail the build
# if the score falls below a defined threshold
polaris audit --audit-path ./k8s-manifests \
  --set-exit-code-on-danger \
  --set-exit-code-below-score 80

This approach means configuration policy is enforced consistently across every merge, not just when a human reviewer happens to notice a problem.

Managed Service vs. Self-Hosted

At launch, Fairwinds offered Polaris both as a self-hosted open source project and as part of its managed Kubernetes service. According to Fairwinds CEO Bill Ledingham, many customers were expected to ask Fairwinds to operate Polaris alongside their Kubernetes clusters. However, the open source nature of the project also makes it straightforward for other managed service providers or internal platform teams to adopt it without vendor dependency.

Addressing the Kubernetes Expertise Gap

One of the structural challenges Polaris aims to address is the gap between the widespread adoption of Kubernetes and the depth of expertise available to operate it well. As Ledingham noted at the time, while many enterprises had adopted Kubernetes, the proportion of actual production workloads running on it remained relatively small — partly because provisioning a production-grade cluster correctly requires significant knowledge.

By codifying best practices into an automated tool, Polaris gives teams a starting point they can refine over time, reducing the documentation burden and providing a machine-enforceable baseline that survives staff turnover and organisational change.

Getting Started with Polaris

Polaris is open source and maintained by Fairwinds on GitHub. To install the dashboard in-cluster using Helm:

helm repo add fairwinds-stable https://charts.fairwinds.com/stable
helm install polaris fairwinds-stable/polaris \
  --namespace polaris \
  --create-namespace

Once deployed, port-forward to the dashboard service to review the configuration audit results for your cluster. Refer to the official Polaris GitHub repository for current installation instructions, as the project has evolved since its 2019 launch.

Summary

Polaris fills a genuine gap in the Kubernetes ecosystem by automating the enforcement of configuration best practices. Whether used as a read-only dashboard, a blocking admission webhook, or a CI/CD gate, it reduces the risk of misconfigured workloads reaching production and gives platform teams a reproducible, auditable standard to work from.

Azure Sentinel is Microsoft's cloud-native SIEM and SOAR platform that collects, detects, investigates, and responds to threats across Azure, on-premises, and third-party environments using AI-powered analytics and automation.

This article is based on a technical walkthrough originally published on TechGenix, featuring Azure security expert and Microsoft MVP Sasha Kranjac (@SasaKranjac). It was written at the time Azure Sentinel was in public preview (circa early 2019). Some details — such as supported regions, pricing, and available connectors — will have changed since then.

What Is Azure Sentinel?

Azure Sentinel is Microsoft’s cloud-native Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) platform. Unlike traditional on-premises SIEM products, Azure Sentinel requires no infrastructure provisioning or complex installation — it runs entirely in the cloud and scales automatically to meet data volume demands.

What sets Azure Sentinel apart from conventional SIEM tools is its breadth of data ingestion and its AI-powered analytics engine. It is designed to monitor not only Azure-native resources, but also on-premises workloads, Office 365, AWS, and a wide range of third-party security products. This makes it a genuine hybrid-cloud security solution rather than a siloed, single-vendor tool.

The Four Core Stages of Azure Sentinel

Azure Sentinel organises its capabilities around four sequential stages, each addressing a distinct phase of the threat-management lifecycle:

Collect — Ingests data at cloud scale from users, devices, applications, and infrastructure across multiple clouds and on-premises environments.

Detect — Identifies threats in near-real time using built-in analytics rules, reducing mean time to detect (MTTD).

Investigate — Applies machine learning and AI to surface correlated alerts and map attack timelines across all monitored assets.

Respond — Automates responses to confirmed threats using Logic App-based Playbooks, eliminating slow manual remediation steps.

Supported Data Sources and Connectors

Once a Log Analytics workspace is connected to Azure Sentinel, you configure Data Connectors to forward logs and telemetry into the platform. At the time of the original preview, available connectors included:

Azure Active Directory (sign-in logs, audit logs)

Azure Active Directory Identity Protection (requires Azure AD Premium P1/P2)

Office 365 (Exchange, SharePoint, Teams activity)

Microsoft Cloud App Security

Azure Information Protection

AWS CloudTrail

Third-party security appliances: Cisco ASA, Fortinet, Barracuda, F5

Any syslog source supporting Common Event Format (CEF)

Each connector has its own configuration blade with step-by-step instructions. Some connectors, such as Azure AD Identity Protection, connect with a single click (provided licensing prerequisites are met), while others — particularly CEF-based connectors — require agent installation on a log-forwarding server.

Getting Started: Initial Setup

Setting up Azure Sentinel for the first time involves a small number of steps:

Navigate to Azure Sentinel in the Azure Portal — either via the Marketplace, All Services, or the search bar.

Click + Add and select an existing Log Analytics workspace, or create a new one in a supported region.

Click Add Azure Sentinel to attach the workspace.

Open the Data Connectors blade and enable the relevant connectors for your environment.

After connectors are configured, Azure Sentinel begins ingesting data. It can take several minutes before events and alerts start appearing in the dashboards. The longer the platform runs, the richer the historical context it builds for anomaly detection.

Note on regions (as of early 2019 preview): At the time of writing, Azure Sentinel workspaces were supported only in a limited set of regions: Australia Southeast, Canada Central, Central India, East US, East US 2 EUAP, Japan East, Southeast Asia, UK South, West Europe, and West US 2. This list has expanded significantly since general availability. Always check the official Microsoft documentation for the current list of supported regions.

The Azure Sentinel Dashboard

The main Azure Sentinel overview presents a centralised security posture at a glance:

Events and Alerts counters — rolling totals for ingested events and triggered alerts.

Events and Alerts over time graph — a time-series view useful for spotting sudden spikes in activity.

World map — plots the geographic origin of suspicious events, helping analysts prioritise threats by source location.

Threat Management and Configuration panel — left-hand navigation providing access to Analytics, Playbooks, Hunting, Cases, and Settings.

Writing Custom Alert Rules with Kusto Query Language (KQL)

Azure Sentinel surfaces Log Analytics directly through the Logs blade, allowing analysts to write and test queries using Kusto Query Language (KQL) against the connected Log Analytics workspace. This is particularly powerful for building custom detection logic tailored to your environment.

As a practical example, the following KQL query searches for Windows Security Event ID
4625
— a failed logon attempt — which is a common indicator of brute-force activity:

SecurityEvent
| where EventID == 4625
| summarize FailedLogons = count() by Account, Computer, bin(TimeGenerated, 1h)
| where FailedLogons > 10
| order by FailedLogons desc

Once you have a working query, you can promote it into a scheduled Analytics Rule by:

Navigating to Analytics and clicking + Add.

Entering a rule name, description, severity level, and status (enabled/disabled).

Pasting your KQL query into the Set Alert Query field — the Logic pane renders a preview graph of matching results.

Clicking View Query Results to validate the query directly in Log Analytics before saving.

Setting an alert threshold and a run frequency (e.g., every 5 minutes, every hour).

Clicking Save to activate the rule.

When the query matches results exceeding the defined threshold, Azure Sentinel raises an alert and, optionally, creates a Case for analyst triage.

Automating Responses with Playbooks

Azure Sentinel Playbooks are Azure Logic App workflows triggered by alerts. They enable security teams to automate repetitive response tasks, dramatically reducing mean time to respond (MTTR). Example automated actions include:

Sending an email or Teams notification when a brute-force threshold is breached.

Blocking inbound traffic from a known-malicious IP address via a firewall API call.

Disabling or locking a compromised user account in Azure Active Directory.

Isolating a virtual machine by removing it from a network security group.

Shutting down a compromised VM to contain lateral movement.

Opening a ticket in an ITSM platform such as ServiceNow or Jira.

Because Playbooks are standard Logic Apps, they benefit from the full Logic Apps connector ecosystem — hundreds of pre-built integrations with Microsoft and third-party services.

Azure Sentinel Fusion: AI-Powered Threat Correlation

Azure Sentinel Fusion is an advanced, machine-learning-driven correlation engine that links seemingly unrelated low-fidelity alerts across multiple data sources into high-confidence security incidents. It is designed to reduce alert fatigue by surfacing the small number of incidents that truly warrant analyst attention, rather than flooding dashboards with individual, unconnected alerts.

During the preview period, Fusion was not enabled by default and had to be activated via Azure Cloud Shell. As of general availability, Fusion is integrated into the platform’s analytics rules and enabled automatically for supported detection scenarios. Check the current Microsoft documentation for the latest configuration requirements.

Key Advantages Over Traditional On-Premises SIEM

Capability

Traditional On-Premises SIEM

Azure Sentinel

Infrastructure setup

Weeks to months

Minutes (cloud-native)

Scaling

Manual capacity planning

Automatic, elastic scaling

Data sources

Primarily on-premises

Azure, on-premises, AWS, SaaS, CEF

AI/ML analytics

Limited or add-on

Built-in (Fusion, anomaly detection)

Automation

Scripted, complex

Logic Apps Playbooks, low-code

Pricing model

Large upfront licence cost

Consumption-based (per GB ingested)

Prerequisites Summary

An active Azure subscription with Contributor permissions.

A Log Analytics workspace created in a supported Azure region.

Appropriate licensing for premium connectors (e.g., Azure AD Premium P1/P2 for Identity Protection).

Jenkins 2016 Community Survey results show rapid adoption growth, while the project ships a major Pipeline update featuring declarative syntax, a graphical editor, and shared libraries.

Source: SD Times (sdtimes.com), original reporting circa early 2017.

Jenkins Usage Grew Significantly in 2016

The Jenkins project’s 2016 Community Survey revealed strong momentum for the open-source automation server across three dimensions: deeper adoption within organizations already using Jenkins, net-new adoptions, and growth driven specifically by Continuous Delivery (CD) initiatives.

Key figures from the survey:

85% of respondents said their organization’s use of Jenkins had increased over the prior year.

54% of practitioners implementing Continuous Delivery were using Jenkins as their primary automation engine.

90% considered Jenkins mission-critical to their business.

96% used Jenkins for build tasks.

62% used Jenkins for deployment activities.

36% used Jenkins for operations tasks.

Sacha Labourey, CEO and co-founder of CloudBees, attributed the growth to the broader DevOps movement: “As an ever-increasing number of teams implement DevOps, we are seeing them naturally turn to Jenkins as the de facto business-critical solution for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery. The survey and increasing usage statistics reflect how adoption continues to grow despite an already massive installed base, all while the community’s involvement keeps increasing.”

Jenkins 2 and Pipeline Support: The Catalyst for Growth

Jenkins creator and CloudBees CTO Kohsuke Kawaguchi pointed to the Jenkins 2 release—launched in early 2016—as a turning point. Jenkins 2 introduced native Pipeline support, giving teams a powerful, scriptable way to define and manage their entire CD workflow as code.

“Early in 2016, the community invested in Jenkins 2, adding Jenkins Pipeline support to enable the leading automation engine with the power and ease of use to support organizations implementing Continuous Delivery and DevOps,” Kawaguchi said. “The 2016 Jenkins Community Survey results indicate the investments are showing a return for both existing and new users through the expanded use of Jenkins within organizations.”

New Pipeline Features: Declarative Syntax, Graphical Editor, and Shared Libraries

Alongside the survey results, the Jenkins project announced a significant update to Jenkins Pipeline aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for Continuous Delivery. The release introduced three major capabilities:

1. Declarative Pipeline Syntax

The new declarative syntax offers a structured, opinionated way to write Jenkinsfiles. Unlike the fully Groovy-based scripted pipeline, the declarative format uses a predefined, human-readable structure that makes pipelines easier to write, read, and validate—especially for teams less familiar with Groovy scripting.

A minimal declarative pipeline looks like this:

pipeline {
    agent any
    stages {
        stage('Build') {
            steps {
                sh 'make build'
            }
        }
        stage('Test') {
            steps {
                sh 'make test'
            }
        }
        stage('Deploy') {
            steps {
                sh 'make deploy'
            }
        }
    }
}

2. Graphical Pipeline Editor (Blue Ocean)

The release included an initial version of a graphical editor, part of the Blue Ocean project—a redesigned user experience for Jenkins. The editor allows teams to define and visualize CD pipelines without writing code directly, making pipeline authorship accessible to a wider range of practitioners, including those without strong scripting backgrounds.

Kawaguchi described the goal: “Declarative Pipeline combines the power and flexibility of Jenkins Pipeline with the simplicity of Blue Ocean. Defining and evolving Continuous Delivery pipelines is made not only easier but also pleasant, which is an important milestone for making Continuous Delivery accessible for everyone.”

3. Shared Pipeline Libraries

Shared pipeline libraries allow teams to extract common pipeline logic into reusable code that can be referenced across multiple Jenkinsfiles. This promotes consistency and reduces duplication in organizations running many pipelines—particularly valuable in large enterprises with dozens or hundreds of projects following similar build and deploy patterns.

Why This Mattered for DevOps Teams

The combination of survey results and feature announcements painted a clear picture of Jenkins’ strategic direction at the start of 2017: move from a plugin-heavy, UI-driven CI server to a programmable, pipeline-first automation platform. The declarative syntax and graphical editor addressed two distinct user segments—experienced engineers who want code-defined pipelines and less experienced users who need a visual interface—while shared libraries served platform engineering teams managing CD at scale.

For DevOps practitioners evaluating or already running Jenkins, these changes signaled that pipeline-as-code was becoming the primary supported workflow, not an add-on. Teams still relying on freestyle jobs and manually configured build steps had a clear migration path toward reproducible, version-controlled pipelines.

Further Reading

If you are new to Jenkins Pipeline or looking to deepen your knowledge, the official Jenkins Pipeline documentation is the most reliable starting point. The Blue Ocean documentation covers the graphical editor in detail.
