Source:-https://securitybrief.eu

Cloud application and security monitoring firm Datadog, and vulnerability database provider Snyk, have announced an integration with GitHub, which enables developers to utilise Datadog’s CI/CD capabilities within software development workflows.

Datadog Vulnerability Analysis GitHub Action is the first of DataDog’s actions listed on the GitHub marketplace, which can be found and installed directly without the need for script or infrastructure management.

GitHub’s vice president of product management, Jeremy Epling, says that IT is increasingly relying on developers for security, testing, and responsibility for production operations.

“Partnering with full-stack monitoring leaders like Datadog makes it easy for developers and DevOps teams to incorporate critical operations tooling as part of their everyday work environment, so teams can focus on delivering value, at greater velocity.”

Datadog explains that often developers scan applications for known vulnerabilities, but issues found can be difficult to priorities and remediate.

The company developed its Continuous Profiler, based on Snyk vulnerability metadata, to enable developers to detect events in which vulnerable methods are used in live environments and to subsequently priorities security fixes.

“Maintaining strong security posture is critical for modern applications, but with traditional vulnerability analysis it can be difficult to distinguish the signal from the noise,” adds Datadog vice president of product and community, Ilan Rabinovitch.

“Integrating the Continuous Profiler with the vulnerability database highlights meaningful security vulnerabilities while utilising the GitHub Action automates this process by bringing security directly into application development.”

Snyk’s CTO of global alliances Geva Solomonovich adds that the combination of Snyk’s vulnerability metadata and Datadog’s profiling abilities could help developers find exactly when an application calls vulnerable code.

“Our partnership with Datadog will allow developers to deploy their security resources with greater efficiency,” says Solomonovich.

Datadog also recently announced an extension of its partnership with Google Cloud from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, right through to North America.

Datadog’s first European Google Cloud data centre includes new regions, expanding access to Datadog’s monitoring and security platform.

“Organisations need to be able to leverage monitoring data to optimise their applications in the cloud, and we’re pleased to partner with Datadog to help them do so,” says Google Cloud global ecosystem corporate vice president Kevin Ichhpurani.

“Datadog provides important capabilities in performance monitoring across on-premises, hybrid, and public cloud infrastructure. By expanding the availability of these capabilities on Google Cloud, we can jointly help customers optimise their most critical workloads for Google Cloud.”

Source:-https://siliconangle.com As Docker Inc. approaches the first anniversary of a business reset following the sale of its enterprise business to […]

Source:-https://siliconangle.com

As Docker Inc. approaches the first anniversary of a business reset following the sale of its enterprise business to Mirantis Inc. last November, executives are declaring its new developer focus a success. Now Docker needs to navigate the path to profitability selling to that notoriously cost-sensitive audience.

In a briefing with journalists on Tuesday, Docker executives said their strategy of reducing the complexity of working with the software containers it invented more than seven years ago is gaining traction. The proof: 11.3 million monthly active users sharing applications from 7.9 million images on Docker Hub repositories with 13.6 billion code pulls per month.

Chief Executive Scott Johnston (pictured) said that’s up 70% from last year. “We’ve come a long way in building a sustainable business focused on developers,” he said.

The company is staying true to the commitment made a year ago to build an ecosystem of independent software vendors around its Docker Desktop development workbench and Docker Hub image repository. “Having learned what makes a successful code environment, we’ve gone out of our way to include ecosystem partners in what we do rather than go it on our own,” Johnston said, citing the example of the Open Container Initiative the company set up in 2015 under the stewardship of the Linux Foundation.

Playing nicely with others
Among the actions, the company has taken in the past year to deliver on that promise are a landmark partnership with Microsoft Corp. that integrates Microsoft’s Azure public cloud and Virtual Studio Code code editor with Docker Desktop. There’s also a deal with Snyk Ltd. to deliver a native vulnerability scanning service for container images. Not least is an agreement with Amazon Web Services Inc. to create a simplified workflow for developers using Docker Compose to build applications for Amazon’s Elastic Container Service and Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate.

Integration with Atlassian Corp. PLC’s Bitbucket and the Microsoft-owned GitHub code repositories has made Docker Hub a nexus for integrating, configuring and managing application components. The company also released its Compose toolset for building multicontainer applications to open source in March.

The net result of the alliances has been to “remove so much complexity from the developer as far as configuring, provisioning and standing up infrastructure in those clouds,” Johnston said. “With two commands a developer can get an application from its local place up to one of those cloud endpoints.”

He said there are now 160 ISV Docker images available from 94 verified publishers and that interest is growing. “The more partners who work with us the more partners want to join us,” he said.

Path to profitability
Now the company needs to build that momentum into a profitable business, something it was unable to do despite raising $260 million in the four years after releasing its container technology. Toward that end, the company next week will initiate a series of price hikes for its heaviest users, marking its first step toward usage-based pricing.

Docker’s generous free plan, which gives developers unlimited public repositories and one private repository, is “not economically sustainable when we have tens of millions of developers today and tens of millions more coming tomorrow,” the CEO said. “A small subset of our user base is over-consuming.” The adjustments are intended to “make sure that subset isn’t consuming to a negative for the rest of the users. The vast majority of users will continue consuming for free.”

Over the next 12 months developers should expect to see new prepackaged development environments similar to those the company rolled out for Python and Node.js earlier this year, expanded set of tools for managing images, better ways for teams to move applications into the cloud and additions to its list of Docker Certified Images and Docker Verified Publishers.

Despite past missteps under previous leadership, Docker has the luxury of patient investors, Johnston said. Insight Venture Partners LP and Benchmark Capital Partners LLC, which together plowed $35 million into the reborn company last year “are more interested in scaling to the market that’s there rather than profitability,” Johnston said. “They see an unbelievable market we created when open sourced in 2013 and we are in a phenomenal position to be a leading company in that market.

Cloud security provider Accurics this week announced a new GitHub application designed to further automate the programmatic enforcement of security policies throughout the software development workflow.

The Accurics platform and the Terrascan tool for detecting compliance and security violations across Infrastructure as Code (IaC) have both been accessible through GitHub Actions for a while. Terrascan is accessible through the popular Super-Linter action. The Accurics platform is available through the company’s own action.

The new GitHub App adds an option for the automation of that enforcement, explained Accurics developer advocate Jon Jarboe, in a blog post. It provides a library of more than 500 policies aligned with compliance standards, such as the CIS benchmark. New commits and pull requests are automatically scanned for policy violations, and when security risks are found, they are added to the PR and/or repo as issues.
By adding Accurics to code scanning, any GitHub user can automate the elimination of security risks from their infrastructure as code before and after deployment, Jarboe said.

“Given the success of high-velocity DevOps teams, we believe that self-healing infrastructure is the only way to embed security into DevOps without breaking it,” Jarboe added. “Reactive processes that require manual actions simply cannot keep up. The rapid adoption of infrastructure as code provides an excellent opportunity to implement guardrails throughout the development lifecycle, starting in the earliest stages.

The new GitHub Accurics App was part of the GitHub announcement this week for integration with new third-party code scanning tools for IaC and container scanning.

“By expanding our GitHub security ecosystem, developers can use their tools of choice for any of their projects on GitHub, all within the native GitHub experience they love,” said GitHub senior business development manager Jose Palafox, in a blog post. “Our integrations tightly couple the developer workflow with a security review through GitHub Actions and Apps.”

Along with Accurics, GitHub announced integrations with 42Crunch (API Contract Security Audit), Bridgecrew (developer-first platform for streamlining cloud security), Snyk Infrastructure as Code and Snyk Container security platforms, Aqua Security (pure-play cloud native security company), and Anchore (enterprise container security workflow solution).

The Pleasanton, CA-based Accurics focuses on enabling “immutable security for immutable infrastructure, so that organizations can embrace cloud native technologies with confidence.” The company’s namesake solution seamlessly scans IaC for misconfigurations based on common policy frameworks and detects potential breach paths to eliminate risks before cloud infrastructure is provisioned. It then monitors provisioned cloud infrastructure for configuration changes that introduce posture drift, and enables reverting to a secure posture.

“GitHub is a luminary in the software development world,” Jarboe said, “and we’re excited to work with them to help deliver to their users the ability to programmatically detect and fix security risks through its new code scanning.”
