When the user opens Safari, the browser initializes its core components, including WebKit, JavaScriptCore, and networking layers.

Safari loads its default homepage or the page where the user left off if using iCloud syncing.

Step 2: User Inputs URL or Search Query

The user either types a URL directly into the address bar or enters a search query.

Safari checks the domain name (e.g.,
example.com
) and resolves it using DNS to get the corresponding IP address.

Step 3: Establishing a Secure Connection

If the website uses HTTPS, Safari establishes a secure connection by verifying the SSL/TLS certificate.

Safari ensures that the connection is secure before allowing data transmission.

Step 4: Fetching Website Data

Safari sends HTTP requests to the web server for the required resources (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images).

It handles parallel requests to load different resources simultaneously, optimizing page load times.

Step 5: Rendering the Web Page

The WebKit engine parses and processes the HTML and CSS, rendering the page for the user to view. Any JavaScript is executed by the JavaScriptCore engine.

Safari dynamically updates the page as necessary, depending on the website’s content and user interactions.

Step 6: Handling User Interactions

Safari captures user interactions like clicks, scrolling, and form submissions. Based on these events, Safari may request new resources from the server or modify the page dynamically.

Safari uses JavaScript event handlers to process user input and trigger appropriate actions.

Step 7: Syncing Data with iCloud

Safari syncs bookmarks, history, tabs, and passwords with iCloud, making the data available on other Apple devices.

This provides a continuous browsing experience, even when switching between devices.

Step 8: Closing Safari

When the user closes Safari, the browser gracefully exits, saving the user’s session data (open tabs, browsing history) and clearing any temporary data if needed.

Step-by-Step Getting Started Guide for Safari

Step 1: Open Safari

On macOS or iOS, Safari is pre-installed. Simply click on the Safari icon to open it.

Step 2: Customize Preferences

Access Safari Preferences (on macOS, go to Safari > Preferences) to adjust settings like the default search engine, homepage, and privacy settings.

Step 3: Enable iCloud Syncing

Ensure that iCloud syncing is enabled to sync browsing history, passwords, and open tabs across all Apple devices.

Go to System Preferences > iCloud on macOS or Settings > iCloud on iOS.

Step 4: Start Browsing

Begin browsing by typing URLs or search queries in the address bar. You can use Safari’s smart search feature to quickly find websites and content.

Step 5: Use Extensions

Install Safari Extensions for additional functionality, such as ad-blockers, password managers, and productivity tools.

Step 6: Manage Tabs and Bookmarks

Use Safari’s tab management features (e.g., pin tabs, tab groups) to organize your browsing session.

Save your favorite websites by adding them to bookmarks or the reading list.

There are many resources available online and in Apple’s documentation that can help you get started.

Here are some additional details about the workflow of macOS:

Start-up: The start-up process for macOS can be customized to include a variety of tasks, such as checking for updates, opening applications, and running scripts.

Log in: When you log in to macOS, you are authenticated using your Apple ID. This allows macOS to keep your files and settings safe and secure.

Desktop: The macOS desktop is a virtual workspace where you can access your files, applications, and other content. You can customize the desktop to your liking by adding icons, folders, and widgets.

Applications: macOS comes with a variety of pre-installed applications, such as Mail, Safari, and Photos. You can also download and install applications from the Mac App Store.

Windows: When you open an application, it will open in a window. You can move, resize, and close windows as needed. Windows can be stacked on top of each other or arranged side-by-side.

Menus: Most applications have menus that you can use to control the application. To access the menus, click on the application’s name in the title bar.

Toolbars: Some applications have toolbars that contain shortcuts to commonly used commands. To access the toolbar, click on the toolbar button in the title bar.

Keyboard shortcuts: macOS has a number of keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform common tasks. To see a list of keyboard shortcuts, press Command+.

Hello everyone, to see emerging software advancement in the IT corporate world and due to their trending IT infrastructure. So, today in this article, we are going to give lessons on the installation process of Jira on Mac Os so, we will look at prerequisites and then we will download Jira for Mac Os, how to start and shutdown Jira (Tomcat), set up the home directory and then finally, we will set up Jira for use. Let’s have a look!

Let us begin.

Step 1:

Prerequisites for installing Jira on the mac operating system

Java must be installed in your system so to check you can go to your terminal and say java –version and this shows you your java version currently installed in case you are not getting this you can install java first and then if you will have this prerequisite completed step number two will be

Step 2:

How to download Jira for Mac OS

You will download Jira for the mac operating system and this is the site

https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download

Where you will download it from so you will go to google and you can say download Jira and you will get that site, you will go there and there you will get that information it is free for thirty days for unlimited users and there you can select your operating system so, you will select OS 10 and then download so it will take a few seconds to a few minutes to download so you have already downloaded it if you will go to your downloaded zip file so if you will go to your downloads folder you will see that zip file which will get downloaded and you will unzip this so, you will have unzipped it and kept on your desktop there so this will be unzipped folder so now the third step is

Step 3:

How to start and shutdown Jira

Or you can also say the Jira tomcat server because Jira comes with the tomcat server so you will have to go to the bin directory inside the folder and you will find startup.SH and shutdown got SH files and these are the files that you will run to start and shutdown Jira server so, we will learn that you will go inside your folder and there you will see there will be bin directory and inside the bin, you will find that startup.SH and shut down. SH there you will have a startup.SH and there you will have a shutdown.SH so, to start you will go to the terminal and go to the location bin folder so for example, you will just press command on your keyboard to get that information and copy the location of that folder and then you will go to your terminal and you will change the directory to that bin folder of Jira and now you can say SH startup.SH and hit enter and you will see that information and it would show you tom get started and to check you can go to your browser and you can go to localhost 8080 so as of now it will not run or you may run this command again and yes, you will see the Jira server is up but there will some problem and it will say we cannot locate the Jira home directory so you will have to set up the home directory so what you will do you will shut it down so you will say sh shutdown.SH and tomcat will stop so if you go to localhost 8080 now so you will see the server will be stopped and you will learn how to set up the home directory and that you have already seen that you will go to localhost 8080.

Step 4:

How to set home directory

To check if the Jira has server is running and to set the home directory you will have to go to that file Jira application. Properties which is inside web-inf glasses folder and

Go to file Jira-application .properties located in Jira folder >> Atlassian–Jira >> Web-INF>> classes

there you will have to provide a location for Jira home so you will see how to do that so you will go to the Jira folder and you will have to go to atlassian Jira folder there you will have web-inf and there you will have classes and there you would find a file Jira application properties so you can open that file with any text editor on your system if you have a text wrangler, you will open this and you will see it will ask for your location for Jira home so you can create any folder and then provide that folder as Jira home so you will create a folder on your desktop itself and you will name that folder as Jira Home hit enter and just press command I to copy its location and you will give the same location on that file, you will give that location so that will Jira home and you can save it and close it okay and see you if you will open this folder as of now that will empty but as you will now start your Jira servers you will see there are folders and files getting created there all the logs will get there as well so now you will go back to your terminal and again say SH startup.asset and it’s storm get started you will go to your browser localhost 8080 you will run the start command again and you will go to localhost 8080 and now you will see atlassian Jira is starting up so it means it will take up your home directory as well it might take a few seconds to start up also if you will now go to your Jira home folder you will inside the folder and you can see all these logs and all these information will now getting created inside that folder. Now, for the first time, it will have this information if you want to set it up yourself or you want to set it up for me so, this is our next step.

Step 5:

Setup Jira for use

You will have to set up Jira for use so you will have started your Jira server and now you will complete the setup so you can click on set it up for me and continue there you will have to select the product so you will select Jira software and select Jira software server you can name any organization there up and running and then generate license so there it will give you the information of your license you will say yes confirmation and there it will ask you for some email ids and then password and retype the password so you will give some email id there and password say next so now it will finally set up all the instances and everything that Jira requires on that particular machine so you will wait for few seconds for that setup to get completed meantime you will look at some tips so instead of localhost you can also use the IP 127.0.0.1 which is the Ip for localhost or you can also use your system public IP instead of localhost so instead of localhost there you can use that IP and you will now see the Jira will ready to go and you can get started with Jira. I hope this information will be helpful for you and it will give you privileges as an onboarding learning concept with valuable steps.

Source:-https://www.esecurityplanet.com/

The increasing mobility of data, as it ping-pongs between clouds, data centers and the edge, has made it an easier target of cybercrime groups, which has put a premium on the encryption of that data in recent years.

Cybersecurity vendors have stepped up, developing strong and efficient ways to encrypt data both while it’s at rest and when it’s in transit. However, there is a glaring weakness. When the data is being processed, analyzed or used by applications in another way, it needs to be unencrypted, making it more vulnerable to attack.

To counter this, some major IT vendors are pushing forward with a decades-old encryption idea that was first talked about in the late 1970s but not successfully demonstrated for the first time until 2009. Since then, interest in fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) has increased, largely paralleling the rise of cloud computing.

Putting a Focus on FHE
FHE enables data to remain encrypted even as it is processed and analyzed, whether that’s in the cloud or in third-party environments. The data is protected against cybercriminals as well as others who are not supposed to see it. Once the mathematical operations, such as calculations, are run on the encrypted data, the results are decrypted and corrected.

In recent months, the list of interested vendors has included IBM, which in December announced its Security Homomorphic Encryption Services, a managed offering hosted on the IBM Cloud. Big Blue has been active in the development for years – it was an IBM researcher who ran the 2009 demonstration – and earlier last year conducted successful FHE field trials. The company also released an FHE toolkit for Apple’s MacOS and iOS operating systems, with Android and Linux being added later.

“Fully homomorphic encryption holds tremendous potential for the future of privacy and cloud computing, but businesses must begin learning about and experimenting with FHE before they can take full advantage of what it has to offer,” IBM Security CTO Sridhar Muppidi said in a statement at the time.

Microsoft’s SEAL (Simple Encrypted Arithmetic Library) is another such effort, an open-source software library created by researchers at the company that uses multiple forms of homomorphic encryption. It’s available on GitHub.

DARPA Gets In on the Effort
Intel, which has been adding security features to its silicon for years and has been working on FHE techniques, was picked earlier this year by the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to work with Microsoft to create an ASIC chip for homomorphic encryption. DARPA will use the accelerator in DARPA’s Data Protection in Virtual Environments (DRPIVE) program to create the hardware needed to reduce the compute power and time that currently is required to run FHE operations. Intel will lead one of four research teams; the other three will be headed by software makers Duality Technologies – which uses homomorphic encryption in its Duality SecurePlus platform – and Galois and a Silicon Valley-based nonprofit scientific research institute, SRI International.

Earlier this month, Google released a collection of open-source libraries that can be used to implement FHE in modern workloads and made them available on GitHub.

“As cloud computing services continue to see widespread adoption, it becomes increasingly important for service providers to guarantee the security and privacy of the data of their customers,” Google researchers wrote in a paper released on GitHub.

Homomorphic Encryption a Long Time Coming
The FHE demo in 2009 proved the technology could work, but it was too slow and consumed too much compute power to be put to use and it was too expensive and required expertise in cryptography. However, such challenges are being addressed.

“Fortunately, over the last few years, FHE has become less computationally intensive, due to significant progress in hardware acceleration, efficient optimizations, and low-level implementations,” the Google researchers wrote.

Still, they added, for adoption of FHE to be widespread, tools are needed to enable software developers without cryptographic expertise to integrate homomorphic encryption into their applications. Dirk Schrader, global vice president of security research at New Net Technologies, agreed. He said a hurdle will be the application of FHE “where the analytics of large data sets will be used for benchmarking individuals, as seen in all those fitness applications or health monitors. Consumerization has the intrinsic tendency to include the question of cost of operation and maintenance, and applying high-end cryptography requires solid knowledge and development skills.”

Digital Health Projects to Benefit
Despite the remaining hurdles, Google, IBM, Microsoft and others are pushing to make it easier for developers to leverage the technology. Bringing FHE to the point where it could be used by vendors and developers would be helpful to organizations in a range of industries, Schrader, whose company makes cybersecurity and compliance software, told eSecurity Planet.

FHE “can solve some of the pressing issues arising out of the conflict to analyze large sums of data points generated by many individuals,” he said. “Many countries are considering some kind of digital health initiatives, where the promise to find better cures is countered by the fear [of losing] privacy. [Homomorphic encryption] offers an interesting approach here by allowing the analysis of encrypted data for purposes that are not related to an individual data set.”

Other possible uses include autonomous public transportation analyzing users’ locations to predict the load in a highly populated urban area, he said, adding that big data “is based on the promise to distill previously undiscovered opportunities from large amounts of data and has, so far with good reason, earned criticism from data privacy advocates.”

A Small but Growing Market
The FHE market is small but expected to grow in the coming years, with market research firm The Insight Partners predicting it will increase from $120.12 million in 2019 to $246.29 million by 2027, an average of 9.7 percent a year. Most of the use will be in North America and Europe, though the Asia-Pacific region stands to see the fastest growth. IBM noted that Gartner forecasts that while currently fewer than 1 percent of companies have the budget for projects that include FHE, that number will be more than 20 percent by 2026.

All this is happening as businesses increasingly adopt hybrid cloud and multi-cloud strategies. In its annual State of the Cloud report, IT management software maker Flexera found that 92 percent of enterprises have embraced a multi-cloud environment and 80 percent have hybrid clouds. Meanwhile, the number of government regulations and standards, such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), are putting growing pressure on enterprises to ensure that the data they collect, store, analyze and act on, is protected from bad actors and prying eyes. Being able to leverage FHE would give them another tool to use to do just that.

A default Docker or Kubernetes installation ships with several serious security gaps—from unauthenticated APIs to root-running containers. Here is what attackers look for and how defenders can respond.

Containers have transformed how software is built and deployed, but ease of use has come at a cost: a typical out-of-the-box Docker or Kubernetes installation contains multiple attack surfaces that are trivially exploitable if left unaddressed. This article breaks down the most common weaknesses from both a red-team and blue-team perspective, drawing on concepts taught in practitioner-level container security courses such as the Black Hat session “From Zero to Hero: Pentesting and Securing Docker Swarm and Kubernetes Environments” led by Sheila A. Berta and Sol Ozzan.

What Are Containers and Kubernetes?

A container is a self-contained, portable unit that bundles application code together with all of its dependencies—libraries, runtimes, and configuration files. The classic developer problem containers solve is the “works on my machine” failure: because everything the application needs travels with it, a container behaves consistently regardless of where it runs.

Kubernetes is an orchestration platform that manages large numbers of containers at scale. It schedules workloads across a cluster of nodes, handles restarts, scales deployments up or down, and provides networking between containers. Managing hundreds or thousands of containers manually is impractical; Kubernetes automates that operational overhead.

Neither Docker nor Kubernetes is inherently insecure, but both ship with defaults optimised for convenience rather than security. Understanding where those defaults fall short is the first step toward hardening them.

Red Team: What Attackers Exploit

1. Containers Running as Root

The single most common misconfiguration is running container processes as the
root
user. When a container process runs as root and an attacker achieves code execution inside that container, they immediately have root-level privileges within the container’s filesystem and process space. This dramatically lowers the bar for subsequent exploitation, including container escape techniques.

2. The Docker Socket Bind Mount

The Docker daemon communicates through a Unix socket located at
/var/run/docker.sock
. If this socket is mounted into a container—a pattern sometimes used for CI/CD agents or monitoring tools—any process inside that container with root access can communicate directly with the host Docker daemon. This effectively grants the attacker control over every container in the cluster, the ability to launch new privileged containers, and the ability to mount the host filesystem. Network segmentation provides no protection once this access is achieved.

3. Secrets Stored in Environment Variables

A common shortcut is to pass sensitive values—database passwords, API tokens, TLS private keys—into containers via environment variables. Environment variables are visible to any process running inside the container and are frequently exposed through application crash dumps, debugging endpoints, or misconfigured logging. An attacker who gains even limited access to a container can often read all environment variables with a single command.

4. The Unauthenticated Docker API

The Docker Engine exposes a REST API, typically on TCP port 2375 (unencrypted) or 2376 (TLS). In a default configuration this API requires no authentication. Exposing it on a network-accessible interface allows anyone who can reach the port to enumerate all running containers, inspect their configuration, pull or push images, execute commands, and ultimately take full control of the host. Search engines such as Shodan routinely index hosts with this port open, making them trivially discoverable by attackers.

5. Post-Compromise Tool Installation

Once inside a container, attackers typically need to install reconnaissance and lateral-movement tools: network scanners, package managers, shells, or even Docker itself. A container that permits outbound network access and has a writable filesystem makes this trivial. The ability to install tools from within a compromised container is a significant force multiplier for attackers.

Blue Team: How to Harden Your Environment

1. Never Run Containers as Root

Explicitly define a non-root user in your
Dockerfile
using the
USER
directive, or override the runtime user with the
--user
flag when starting the container. Mapping container UIDs to unprivileged host UIDs (user namespace remapping) provides an additional layer of isolation.

# In your Dockerfile
RUN groupadd -r appuser && useradd -r -g appuser appuser
USER appuser

2. Protect the Docker Socket

Avoid mounting
/var/run/docker.sock
into containers wherever possible. If your architecture genuinely requires it—for example, a container-based build agent—apply the principle of least privilege: restrict which images and operations are permitted, and run such containers in an isolated environment with no access to production workloads. The Docker documentation provides guidance on securing daemon access with TLS client certificates.

3. Use Docker Secrets Instead of Environment Variables

Docker Swarm’s built-in secrets management and Kubernetes Secrets both provide mechanisms for injecting sensitive data into containers without exposing it as a plain-text environment variable. In Docker Swarm, secrets are stored encrypted at rest and transmitted to containers over an encrypted channel, appearing as files inside the container at
/run/secrets/<secret_name>
. This is meaningfully better than environment variables, though Kubernetes Secrets in particular require additional hardening (encryption at rest, RBAC restrictions) to be fully secure.

4. Lock Down the Docker API

The Docker API should never be exposed on a publicly routable interface without authentication. Configure TLS mutual authentication so that only clients with a valid certificate can connect. Block TCP port 2375 at your network boundary. If the API is not needed remotely, bind it exclusively to the Unix socket and disable TCP listeners entirely.

5. Minimise the Container Attack Surface

Apply the principle of minimal images: include only the binaries, libraries, and configuration files required for the application to run. Distroless base images or Alpine-based images with a deliberate package selection make post-compromise tool installation much harder. Combine this with a read-only root filesystem where possible:

docker run --read-only --tmpfs /tmp my-image

6. Block Unused Ports and Restrict Egress

Blocking outbound connections that containers do not legitimately need limits an attacker’s ability to download tools or establish command-and-control channels after a compromise. Use Kubernetes NetworkPolicy resources or host-level firewall rules to enforce egress restrictions on a per-workload basis.

Key Takeaways

A default Docker or Kubernetes installation prioritises convenience. Security must be deliberately configured.

Running containers as root is the most pervasive misconfiguration and the easiest to fix.

The Docker socket and the Docker API are high-value targets; both must be explicitly protected.

Environment variables are an insecure secret-delivery mechanism. Use a dedicated secrets solution.

Minimising installed packages and blocking unnecessary network access significantly reduces post-exploitation capability.

Getting Started with Hands-On Practice

The best way to internalise these concepts is to build a lab environment and attempt to exploit the misconfigurations yourself before fixing them. Docker can be installed on Linux, macOS, and Windows from the official Docker documentation. MicroK8s—a lightweight, single-node Kubernetes distribution from Canonical—is a practical option for running Kubernetes locally without the resource overhead of a full cluster. Both tools have official quick-start guides that will get you to a running environment within minutes.

Once your environment is running, consider working through the Docker security blog and the Kubernetes security concepts documentation to understand the full range of controls available to you.

Choosing the right programming language can shape your cybersecurity career. This guide breaks down Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python, and C# — covering use cases, learning curves, and career fit.

If you are new to software development and eyeing a career in cybersecurity or general DevOps engineering, one of the first decisions you will face is choosing a programming language to learn. There is no universally “best” option — every language reflects the philosophy of its creators and is optimised for certain categories of problems. The right choice depends on your goals, your existing experience, and the kinds of projects you want to work on.

Ask Yourself These Questions First

Before committing to a language, spend time answering a few key questions:

What type of work interests you? Web development, mobile apps, systems programming, data analysis, game development, and security tooling all favour different languages.

How much experience do you already have? Beginners benefit from languages with readable syntax and large learning communities. Jumping straight into a lower-level or more complex language (such as Rust or C++) without prior programming experience can be discouraging.

What are your career goals? Freelancing, joining a large tech company, working at a startup, or specialising in security each carry different language preferences. If you are targeting a specific employer, research the languages they use in production.

How much time can you dedicate? Some languages have a steeper learning curve and require more practice before you become productive.

Keep in mind that many programming languages share syntactic patterns and underlying concepts. Learning one language thoroughly makes picking up a second significantly easier.

Five Programming Languages Worth Considering

Java

First released in 1995, Java has maintained broad adoption across enterprise back-ends, Android mobile development, and large-scale distributed systems. Its “write once, run anywhere” design means Java applications run on Windows, macOS, Linux, and other platforms without recompilation.

Java’s longevity means the job market for Java developers remains consistently strong. The language is also well-suited to beginners: its strict type system and verbose syntax encourage good habits, and the ecosystem of tutorials, courses, and community support is vast.

Best used for: Back-end web development, Android mobile development, enterprise applications, desktop applications.

JavaScript

JavaScript is the dominant language of the web. Every major browser executes JavaScript natively, making it unavoidable for front-end development. The rise of Node.js extended JavaScript to the server side, and frameworks such as React, Angular, and Vue have made it the foundation of modern web application development.

If your career path involves building or securing web applications, JavaScript is essential knowledge. It is also a practical choice if you want flexibility between front-end and full-stack roles.

Best used for: Front-end web development, full-stack web development, browser-based tooling.

PHP

PHP, also dating to the mid-1990s, was designed specifically for web development and can be embedded directly inside HTML. This tight integration with HTML makes it approachable for beginners working on web projects. A substantial portion of the web — including platforms built on WordPress, Drupal, and Laravel — runs on PHP, which keeps demand for PHP developers steady.

PHP is not the trendiest language, but its simplicity and the sheer volume of existing PHP codebases make it a practical skill, particularly for freelancers and developers maintaining legacy web infrastructure.

Best used for: Back-end web development, content management systems, server-side scripting.

Python

Python has become the go-to language for scripting, automation, data analysis, machine learning, and security tooling. Its syntax emphasises readability — code is structured with indentation rather than braces, which reduces visual noise and makes programs easier to audit.

In the cybersecurity space specifically, Python is widely used for writing exploit scripts, building security tools, automating penetration testing tasks, and analysing network traffic. Tools such as Scapy, Impacket, and many frameworks in the offensive and defensive security ecosystems are Python-based.

Python is considered beginner-friendly, and its compatibility with data science libraries (NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn) makes it valuable if you want to move into threat intelligence or security analytics.

Best used for: Security scripting and tooling, back-end web development, data analysis, automation, machine learning.

C#

C# is a statically typed, object-oriented language developed by Microsoft as part of the .NET ecosystem. It is the primary language for building Windows desktop applications and is closely associated with Unity, the widely used game engine. Developers using Unity to build 2D and 3D games write their logic in C#.

C# is also used with the Xamarin platform for cross-platform mobile development. If your interests lie in Windows-native software, game development, or mixed-reality applications, C# is a strong choice. Its syntax is similar to Java and C++, so transitioning between these languages is relatively straightforward.

Best used for: Windows application development, game development (Unity), cross-platform mobile development (Xamarin), VR/AR applications.

Quick Reference: Language by Use Case

Use Case

Recommended Languages

Front-end web development

JavaScript

Back-end web development

JavaScript (Node.js), Java, Python, PHP

Security scripting and tooling

Python

Mobile development

Java (Android), C# (Xamarin)

Game development

C#

Desktop applications

Java, Python, C#

Data analysis and automation

Python

Choosing Based on Career Stage

Your current experience level should influence your choice:

Complete beginners: Python and JavaScript offer the gentlest on-ramps, with readable syntax, interactive development environments, and enormous communities producing tutorials and answered questions.

Developers with some experience: Java or C# provide exposure to strongly typed, object-oriented patterns that are common in enterprise environments. PHP is a practical add-on if web development is your focus.

Security-focused developers: Python is near-essential. Understanding C or C++ basics is valuable for understanding vulnerabilities at the memory level, though these are more demanding languages to learn.

The Broader Picture

The programming language ecosystem evolves continuously. New languages emerge, existing ones gain or lose framework support, and employer preferences shift. The languages covered here — Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python, and C# — have each demonstrated staying power, broad adoption, and active communities, which means learning resources are plentiful and job opportunities exist across industries.

Rather than searching for the single “best” language, choose the one that aligns with where you want to work and what you want to build. Master the fundamentals, contribute to real projects, and picking up additional languages later will become progressively easier.

Source:-infoq.com Docker has released a new fileshare implementation for Docker Desktop for Windows as part of the 2.1.7.0 edge release. […]

Source:-infoq.com

Docker has released a new fileshare implementation for Docker Desktop for Windows as part of the 2.1.7.0 edge release. This new fileshare makes use of FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) and allows for more seamless sharing of files between host and container. This includes being able to edit source on the host, save, and see the changes live in the browser on the container.

With this release the previously experimental gRPC FUSE system is now on by default. This change improves the workflow of editing files on the host machine using a preferred IDE while hosting the app in a container. By switching from Samba to FUSE it allows the file system to run as a regular Windows process. Therefore this no longer requires Administrator privileges to share the drive and the user no longer needs to enter their domain credentials to facilitate the connection.

This change also has traffic following over hypervisor sockets instead of being routed via DNS. Since the traffic is not flowing over the virtual ethernet/IP network this new approach is not affected by firewall policies. Previous implementations could also be impacted by enterprise VPN clients and endpoint security software which is now no longer the case.

The Docker team performed benchmarking to compare the performance of this new filesystem against the old Samba based model. They also compared the use case of not sharing the files between the container and the host as this represents the upper limit on performance. As noted by David Scott, member of technical staff at Docker, “The initial (uncached) fetch is already better than with the previous Desktop version, but the second (cached) fetch is 60% faster!”

Comparison of initial and subsequent page loads in different Docker file sharing modes

Comparison of initial and subsequent page loads in different Docker file sharing modes (credit: Docker)

FUSE is a software interface that allows non-privileged users to create their own file systems without having to edit kernel code. This file system is run in the user space with the FUSE module, providing a bridge to the actual kernel interface.

In this new implementation, a read request for a file from the web server running on a container will call the Linux command read. This command will be handled by the kernel’s VFS (virtual file system) layer. The VFS is modular and supports multiple file system implementations, including FUSE. Running inside the VM is a helper process known as the FUSE client. The client runs in the same namespace as the Docker engine.

Diagram tracing a request from the container to read a file

Diagram tracing a request from the container to read a file (credit: Docker)

When the FUSE client needs access to the host filesystem, it connects to the host via a hypervisor socket. Hypervisor sockets are a shared memory communication mechanism that allows VMs to communicate with each other and their host. This provides a number of the advantages mentioned previously as traffic does not need to travel over regular virtual networking. The filesystem requests are written into shared memory and read by the VMBus implementation in the Windows kernel. These requests are received by the FUSE server which runs as a regular Windows process. The FUSE server makes use of the Windows API to perform file activites and returns the result to the caller.

An additional improvement with this change is the generation of inotify events when a file is changed. When files are modified in Linux, the kernel will generate an inotify event. Applications can listen for these events and trigger actions. For example, an application could trigger a recompile and a browser refresh when its source files are changed.

While this feature provides general improvements to the file system performance, there are other third-party tools available to facilitate the sharing of files between host and container. Telepresence is an open-source CNCF sandbox project originally created by Datawire. It works for both MacOS and Linux and allows for local development including live coding and debugging of services running inside Kubernetes. Ksync is another open-source option available for Linux, MacOS, and Windows that also allows for local development on services running within Kubernetes.

This feature is available now in the Docker Desktop Edge 2.1.7.0 release. The Docker team is soliciting feedback on the release prior to pushing it to the stable channel.

Docker Desktop is the simplest way to get Docker running on macOS. Learn how to install Docker Desktop, pull images from the command line, and manage containers with a GUI.

This article is based on a guide originally published on TechRepublic. It covers installing Docker on macOS using Docker Desktop, the official supported installer from Docker, Inc.

Why Docker Desktop Is the Best Starting Point for macOS

macOS is a popular choice for cloud and container-based development thanks to its Unix foundation, stability, and tooling ecosystem. If you want to run Docker on a Mac, Docker Desktop is the path of least resistance. It handles the entire installation in a few clicks and sets up everything you need to start pulling images and running containers immediately.

It is worth being clear about what Docker Desktop does and does not provide:

What it installs: the Docker daemon, the
docker
CLI, Docker Compose, and Docker credential helpers.

What it adds to macOS: a menu-bar whale icon that gives quick access to preferences, sign-in to Docker Hub, and status information.

What it does not do: provide a full Apple-native GUI for container lifecycle management out of the box. For that, a separate tool such as Kitematic (now deprecated upstream) or third-party alternatives are needed.

Prerequisites

A supported version of macOS (check the Docker Desktop release notes for the current minimum version requirement).

Administrator privileges on the Mac.

A free Docker Hub account if you intend to push images or access private repositories.

Installing Docker Desktop

The installation process is straightforward:

Go to docker.com/products/docker-desktop and download the macOS installer (
.dmg
file). Choose the correct chip architecture — Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or Intel — for your machine.

Double-click the downloaded
.dmg
file to mount the disk image.

In the installer window, drag the Docker icon into the Applications folder.

Open Docker from the Applications folder. macOS will prompt you for your administrator password so the Docker daemon can be installed as a system service.

Wait for the whale icon to appear in the menu bar and animate. Once the animation stops and the icon is steady, Docker is running.

To verify the installation, open Terminal and run:

docker --version
docker run hello-world

A successful
hello-world
run confirms that the daemon is reachable and images can be pulled from Docker Hub.

Working with Docker from the Command Line

Once Docker Desktop is running, every standard Docker command works in Terminal. For example, to pull and run the latest NGINX image:

# Pull the latest NGINX image
docker pull nginx

# Run NGINX, mapping port 8080 on your Mac to port 80 in the container
docker run -d -p 8080:80 --name my-nginx nginx

# Confirm the container is running
docker ps

Open a browser and navigate to
http://localhost:8080
to see the NGINX welcome page served from inside the container.

GUI-Based Container Management

If you prefer a graphical interface for searching Docker Hub, launching containers, and inspecting logs, there are a couple of options:

Docker Desktop Dashboard

Modern versions of Docker Desktop ship with a built-in Dashboard that lets you view running containers, inspect logs, open a shell inside a container, and manage volumes and images — all without leaving the app. Click the Docker whale icon in the menu bar and select Dashboard to open it.

Kitematic (Legacy)

Kitematic was a standalone GUI tool for Docker that was bundled with older versions of Docker Desktop. It has since been deprecated by Docker, Inc. and is no longer actively maintained. If you are running a recent version of Docker Desktop, the built-in Dashboard covers the same use cases. If you still need Kitematic for a legacy workflow, download it directly from the GitHub releases page rather than through the Docker menu, as the menu-bar shortcut in older versions was known to produce a broken installation.

Optional: Installing Git

Most Docker-based workflows involve pulling application source code from a Git repository. If Git is not already on your Mac, the simplest installation methods are:

Xcode Command Line Tools: Run
git --version
in Terminal; macOS will prompt you to install the tools if Git is missing.

Homebrew: Run
brew install git
for the latest upstream version.

Official installer: Download from git-scm.com/download/mac.

Key Takeaways

Docker Desktop is the official, supported, and easiest way to install Docker on macOS.

After installation, verify with
docker run hello-world
before starting any real work.

Use the built-in Docker Desktop Dashboard for GUI-based container management on current versions.

Kitematic is deprecated; rely on the Dashboard or third-party tools for GUI workflows.

Standard
docker
and
docker compose
CLI commands work in any Terminal session once Docker Desktop is running.
