In this blog, we will talk about Istio how it is useful, and many more. But first, let’s start with […]

In this blog, we will talk about Istio how it is useful, and many more.

But first, let’s start with its meaning.

What is Istio?

Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides policy enforcement, traffic management, and telemetry collection.

It runs on Kubernetes, nomad, and console.

It let developers connect, secure, control, monitor, and run a distributed microservice architecture (MSA).

Service mesh is a way to connect all of your services with one consistent network and observability layer STO.

In other words, the service mesh is a network of the microservices like how services A and B talk with each other.

As the service mesh grows things get complex and you need to have a way to control how different services like A and B talk with each other. Here Istio comes in.

Features of Istio

Load balancing – It allows HTTP, TCP, and WebSocket trafficking where you can control tication is being done between services A and B or how things come from outside in.

Fine-grain control – It makes sure that you have rules, retries, failovers, you even fault injection.

You have the wonderful place of how you specifically talk to service A and not service B in certain situations.

Access control – To make sure that the policies you have for your cloud-native application are correct and enforceable.

Visibility – You have logging and graphing things you can put in front of them to be able to see how everything is working. It’s all free and comes together when you install Istio.

Automatic metrics to be able to do how you expected to make it happen.

How Istio is useful?

There are a few points mentioned below that shows how Istio is useful: –

Istio allows organizations to secure, connect, monitor, and run distributed microservices.

Attain consistent service networking.

Improves the performance of the application.

It makes simple service-to-service network operations like traffic management, authorization, encryption, auditing as well as observability.

Secure cloud-native apps

Manage traffic effectively

Monitor service mesh

Easily get deployed with Kubernetes and virtual machines

Simplify load balancing with modern features

Apply policies to provide insight into network performance issues

Secures service-to-service and pod-to-pod communication.

Istio finds the challenges that might developers and operators face with a distributed or microservices architecture.

Istio uses an extended version of the Envoy proxy and Envoy mediates all inbound and outbound traffic for all services in the service mesh. Envoy proxies are the only Istio components that interact with data plane traffic.

Istio helps to manage microservices through two major components:

Data Plane

Control Plane

Training Place

I would like to tell you about one of the best places to get trained and certification in DevOps, DevSecOps, SRE, AIOps, MLOps, GitOps, AI, Machine learning and Istio courses is DevOpsSchool. This Platform offers the best trainers who have good experience in DevOps and also they provide a friendly eco-environment where you can learn comfortably and free to ask anything regarding your course and they are always ready to help you out whenever you need, that’s why they provide pdf’s, video, etc. to help you.

Source:-https://siliconangle.com/

Shipa Corp., a Kubernetes application development and management platform, today announced the launch of Shipa Cloud that will assist developers, DevOps teams and platform engineers with the management and support of cloud-native applications.

Shipa Cloud provides a secure developer-centric platform for managing operating applications on Kubernetes. This includes the automatic creation and deployment of all objects.

It operates within the application layer and ensures that developers can observe the app’s entire context without interacting with infrastructure or tinkering with Kubernetes under the hood. As a result, the developers and engineers involved in the process do not need Kubernetes expertise.

“Kubernetes is a powerful and requisite tool for modern application development, but for too many enterprises now leveraging it, it remains frustratingly complex to manage,” said Bruno Andrade, chief executive of Shipa. “We launched Shipa in 2020 to take many of those infrastructure tasks off developers’ plates.”

Shipa Cloud features and benefits include the elimination of existing YAML and Helm charting, post-deployment observability, easy setup and governance and out-of-the-box integration with many cloud-native tools.

Upon installing Shipa Cloud, DevOps teams no longer need to update YAML files constantly and maintain policies for automated governance. The company says it will do that itself to deploy applications, so teams can stay in touch with Kubernetes environments through the interface.

Once deployed, Ship Cloud provides in-depth observability across all applications for statuses, objects, dependencies and network policies. It also connects with numerous pre-built connections into existing management tools for application lifecycle history and version management.

Shipa Cloud also allows DevOps teams to set policies for governance easily– for example, policies can be applied across the entire application stack. Once deployed, it can apply to network security, user roles, resource consumption and much more.

“We enable developers to focus on application deployment and management, while also empowering DevOps to set up the control and compliance policies they require,” said Andrade.

The platform also integrates with numerous cloud-native tools popular on the market such as Vault by HashiCorp Inc., Datadog Inc., JFrog Ltd., Circle Internet Services Inc., Traefik Labs and Istio.

Source:-https://www.infoq.com

IBM has recently announced the beta availability of a new serverless compute service called IBM Cloud Code Engine. The service is a managed serverless platform that runs containerized workloads, for example web apps, micro-services, event-driven functions and batch jobs.

A follow up article describes the use cases and the open source technologies used to build Code Engine, including Knative, the Kubernetes-based platform to deploy and manage serverless workloads, the service mesh Istio, and Tekton, the framework for creating continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) systems. Cong Nguyen, developer advocate at IBM, tweets:

IBM emphasises the open source layers and the portability of the platform, explaining that while it offers a simplified user experience, developers can still fully customize the Kubernetes data model or reuse existing deployment scripts on Code Engine.

Depending on the load, Code Engine automatically scales the containers, including scaling to zero when no requests are active. A container image is not a prerequisite to use the service: Code Engine can bundle the source-code from a Git repository with a supported runtime environment, what IBM calls a “buildpack”, and generate the container. A guide on how to do it is available in the IBM Cloud Design Engineer Gitbook.

The About IBM Cloud Code Engine covers the main concepts, names and terminology used on the platform. The first tutorial provided by IBM shows how to build a visual recognition platform, using Code Engine and the Cloud CLI.

Harald Uebele, developer advocate at IBM Germany, wrote a detailed article on in his personal blog on how to run containers serverless on Code Engine, highlighting the use cases where the new platform should excel:

While Christophe Boulangé, Cloud Director at BNP Paribas, labels it the “FaaS next-generation” other developers question the advantages against other existing offers: “What is the strongest part of this solution against AWS lambda, or Cloud Functions from GCP?”
