Source:-https://www.prnewswire.com/ China’s car ownership showed the CAGR of 12.9% during 2012-2019 and it is estimated to reach 272.13 million units […]

Source:-https://www.prnewswire.com/

China’s car ownership showed the CAGR of 12.9% during 2012-2019 and it is estimated to reach 272.13 million units in 2020 with a year-on-year spike of 7.2%, invigorating the motor vehicle inspection market and with a demanding on higher motor vehicle inspection capabilities.

In recent years, regulatory authorities including the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Environmental Protection have intensified their efforts for vehicle inspection, fueling a boom in the Chinese vehicle inspection market. In 2019, China’s vehicle inspection market size was estimated at RMB38.05 billion with a year-on-year spurt of 17.6%, of which vehicle inspection systems and vehicle inspection services contributed RMB4.743 billion and RMB33.31 billion respectively, surging by 24.5% and 16.7% on an annualized basis. The substantial growth of vehicle inspection systems was largely bolstered by product renewal thanks to the implementation of new standards.

China’s vehicle inspection is in the early stage of intelligence and networking, lagging behind developed countries in terms of technology and configuration. As of 2019, there had been more than 13,000 vehicle inspection stations across China, namely every 10,000 vehicles could be served by only 0.5 inspection station, far lower than the average of 2 or more in Japan, the United States and Europe. This indicates huge development potentials in China.

As estimated, the number of vehicle inspection stations in China will maintain a growth rate of about 9% between 2020 and 2026, expectedly registering 25,000 by 2026. Thus, the new vehicle inspection stations will demand vehicle inspection equipment worth RMB3.6 billion.

With the tightening of industry supervision and the intensification of market competition, Chinese vehicle inspection equipment and system market has become ever more concentrated. Shenzhen Anche Technologies, Launch Tech, Shijiazhuang Huayan Traffic Technology, Foshan Nanhua Instruments and Chengdu Chengbao Development have high market shares, strong R&D capabilities, and wide business coverage.

In 2019, Shenzhen Anche Technologies, Launch Tech, Nanhua Instruments and Shijiazhuang Huayan Traffic Technology seized 59.5% shares of Chinese vehicle inspection system market together. Especially, Shenzhen Anche Technologies and Nanhua Instruments quickly evolved into the industry’s leaders, with their revenue soaring by 287.0% and 82.4% year-on-year respectively.

The motor vehicle inspection service industry features geographical limitations, and the competitors can be bifurcated into state-owned enterprises and private ones, among which the former is superior in comprehensive strength, equipment and technology, but a number of third-party inspection agencies have emerged with the advancement of the vehicle inspection industry, and private vehicle inspection companies have been seizing more market share by unique competitive edges.

In 2018, Shenzhen Anche Technologies entered the motor vehicle inspection service market by acquiring 70% stake of XingChe Motor Vehicle Inspection. In September 2019, Duolun Technology established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Jiangsu Duolun Vehicle Inspection Industry Holding Co., Ltd., with a registered capital of RMB300 million, marking the company’s official foray into the motor vehicle inspection industry. With the stricter requirements of new standards on inspection services as well as the involvement of private capital, the competition in Chinese vehicle inspection service market will, undoubtedly, prick up.

Chinese vehicle inspection market will continue to expand, and it is expected to worth RMB72.05 billion by 2026 under the drive of vehicle ownership growth, longer vehicle usage time, the growing number of vehicle inspection agencies, the continuous expansion of applied fields, and the upgrading of emission standards.

Source:-https://www.sme.org Long gone are the days where the only solution to human error was human correction. As engineers today, we […]

Source:-https://www.sme.org

Long gone are the days where the only solution to human error was human correction. As engineers today, we have access to smart technology that no other generation could have ever imagined.

When configured and applied correctly, we have at our fingertips the capability to use artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic techniques, integrated with multiple inspection systems, to create flawless products at an efficient rate.

Multiple inspection systems fitted with AI and robotic technology must be applied to factories because having several inspection systems allows for quality production and, by using inspection data, achieves smarter manufacturing processes in the future.

Several inspection systems allow for the collection of a sufficient amount of data from various sources to enable a 99.99 percent certitude level of inspection data.

Inspection and rework are often the most costly bottleneck for any production system.

So, by having such an innovative system, we would increase throughput and reduce downtime considerably.

The multiple inspection systems consist of robotic arms augmented by sensors tracking slippage, temperature and vision, in addition to the regular robotic data metrics.

Manufacturers can also include a drone equipped with vision peripherals that has a multi-tracking camera system with both regular and heat mapping.

These three types of inspection result in an integrated, smart inspection system that can analyze manufacturing events, similar to how self-driving cars analyze road conditions, in order to inform the manufacturing system of needed responses to ensure unimpaired and nonstop production.

The data collected through these inspections is then fused, using knowledge-based/semantic AI techniques to flag anomalies, propose potential correction scenarios and retrieve from the archive of previously acquired data correction schemes.

The data is then also used to augment the learning database to support future correction scenarios.

One can imagine that, based on given sensed metrics, the drones can be dynamically commanded to perform certain inspection routines.

The convergence of robotics/drones and AI/machine learning is the key to success—using innovative systems to increase productivity and reduce cost.

This concept of multiple inspection systems has been applied and implemented in a Future Factories laboratory at the University of South Carolina.

The lab simulates an environment of a future manufacturing industry. The system is used to mimic automated assembly of rocket parts (representative of how we would build rockets in the next century).

It is equipped with a plethora of sensors integrated with algorithms to instantly present the manufacturing system with scenarios to overcome current faults.

Such an integrated inspection system can be used to facilitate production in both discrete and continuous manufacturing environments.

We are currently assessing the implementation of this system in automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The current experiments conducted in the laboratory edges us toward a more comprehensive inspection system that is seamlessly integrated with artificial intelligence techniques to anticipate, measure, assess and control production systems.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has completed a running test of its prototype EX ROVR explosion-proof inspection robot at a Japanese oil refinery, demonstrating autonomous navigation, stair climbing, and automated charging in hazardous Zone 1 environments.

Source: chemengonline.com

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Validates Explosion-Proof Robot for Refinery Inspections

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has successfully completed a running test of its prototype EX ROVR, an autonomous plant inspection robot engineered with explosion-protection features. The test was conducted jointly with JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corp. at the Mizushima Refinery in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Japan.

The EX ROVR is purpose-built to operate safely in environments where flammable gases are present. Its explosion-proof design prevents the robot itself from becoming an ignition source — a critical requirement in oil refinery and petrochemical plant settings where even a small electric spark or excess heat could trigger a fire or explosion.

What the Running Test Demonstrated

During the trial at the Mizushima Refinery, the EX ROVR demonstrated the following capabilities:

Autonomous multi-floor navigation: The robot moved independently through several floors of a confined plant building, including navigating staircases — a significant challenge for wheeled or tracked inspection platforms.

Multi-sensor data collection: The EX ROVR gathered readings from its onboard sensor suite during the patrol run, simulating the data-collection tasks required in routine plant inspections.

Automated docking and charging: The robot managed continuous operation by autonomously returning to a docking station for recharging, enabling extended, uninterrupted patrol cycles without human intervention.

The test confirmed that the prototype meets the baseline functional requirements for conducting routine patrol inspections and responding to emergency situations at JXTG Energy facilities. MHI and JXTG Energy are continuing to analyze test results to identify remaining issues and drive further improvements before commercialization.

Explosion-Protection Standards and Safe-Area Classification

A defining feature of the EX ROVR is its compliance with internationally recognized explosion-protection standards:

Japan’s explosion-proof guidelines — the domestic regulatory framework governing equipment used in hazardous industrial environments in Japan.

ATEX — the European Union directive covering equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

IECEx — the International Electrotechnical Commission’s scheme for certifying explosion-protected equipment, widely adopted globally.

Together, these certifications allow the EX ROVR to be deployed safely in Zone 1 environments — areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur periodically during normal operation. This is a more demanding classification than Zone 2, making Zone 1 compliance especially relevant for active refinery process areas.

Technology Lineage: From Nuclear to Petrochemical

MHI’s development of the EX ROVR draws on its prior experience with robotics in extreme and hazardous environments, including support roles in nuclear plant accident containment. Applying ruggedized, safety-critical robotics expertise to oil and gas inspection reflects a broader industry trend of repurposing heavy-industry automation technologies for plant safety applications.

Path to Commercialization

The Mizushima Refinery test represents an early but meaningful milestone. MHI plans to conduct additional tests and demonstrations across a range of plant environments with the goals of:

Increasing inspection coverage density — ensuring the robot can reliably check a greater proportion of plant assets per patrol cycle.

Enhancing overall safety and robustness under varied operating conditions.

Pursuing full commercialization of the EX ROVR platform for use across the refinery and petrochemical industry.

For plant operators, autonomous explosion-proof inspection robots represent a significant shift: routine hazardous-area patrols currently performed by human technicians could be handed to robots, reducing personnel exposure to dangerous environments and enabling more frequent, consistent data collection.

More information about MHI’s robotics and industrial automation work is available at www.mhi.com.
