Source:-https://www.marketscreener.com As I talk with construction professionals, there seems to be a lot of confusion about ‘the cloud.’ Recently, for […]

Source:-https://www.marketscreener.com

As I talk with construction professionals, there seems to be a lot of confusion about ‘the cloud.’ Recently, for example, I read an online conversation prompted by a CFO’s question about what is a true cloud ERP system. The responses were as varied as opinions on what is a true high-performance car.

Why the confusion? Part of it stems from the broad definition of cloud computing itself.

A variety of cloud options
In simplest terms, cloud computing is the delivery of on-demand computing resources, usually as a service, over the Internet. That definition leaves a lot of room for different approaches to cloud computing. For construction companies, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it provides construction firms with a lot more choices in how they want to use the cloud.

For example, on one side of the cloud spectrum is software as a service (SaaS). A SaaS solution is your purest form of cloud software. It is an all-inclusive cloud option in which you don’t have to install, update, or troubleshoot problems with the software. All you do is pay a subscription fee to access and use the application via the Internet. Your use of the solution can be via a ‘browser’ or a ‘native application’ written for the specific device.

On the other end of the spectrum is on-premises software that you own, install, and run on your own machines within your company’s walls. This is a completely non-cloud scenario. In between full on-premises software and SaaS, however, are a variety of cloud variations that construction companies are using. These include, but are not limited to:

Windows remote desktop
Remote desktop virtualization has been around for a while. It allows you to store Windows applications and data on your local corporate server but provide access to the applications via a private connection over a local (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). Two of the most common types of Windows remote desktop solutions are Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (previously known as Terminal Services) and Citrix.

Today remote desktop virtualization has expanded to the cloud, allowing you to tap into Windows and other business applications over the Internet using any device. There are a number of ways to do this, including using a virtual private network (VPN). In this case, the VPN is essentially another wide area network that allows information to securely pass over the less secure public Internet using encryption, user authentication, and other protective measures.

Cloud hosting services
Many contractors, faced with aging servers, hardware, and networking components, have opted for a cloud-hosting option rather than invest in new equipment. Hosting services will run your Windows applications for you on equipment in cloud data centers. In addition to helping you offload IT equipment and tasks, cloud hosting services also allow you to access your applications anytime, anywhere, and on any device. Some hosting services, such as Swizznet, specialize in applications like Sage to provide more customized service.

Browser-based software
Some on-premises Windows applications are browser-based and mobile-enabled via services like Azure Active Directory Application Proxy This allows you to provide greater authorized access to backend information (such as accounting) without putting the data directly into the cloud. Essentially, contractors can keep their on-premises software and data on their own machines or in a data center. Cloud technology, in this case, is used more as a secure ‘browser’ or gateway into your backend systems to provide the mobile access you need.

SaaS software integrated with Windows on-premises software
Integration between pure on-premises software and pure SaaS apps is also happening, providing yet another way to more easily share data among your team. This is usually accomplished via some sort of a ‘synchronization connector’ that sits with your on-premises software and talks to the SaaS solution.

Too much focus on the cloud?
Perhaps it’s time to change the conversation. Instead of focusing on the nuances of cloud computing, the discussion is more about business needs. Do you want to access information anytime and anywhere? How much of your IT do you want to manage yourself? What are your security requirements and restrictions? Do you need scalability?

Understanding what you want to get out of the cloud can guide your interaction with cloud providers and help you select the best solution for your company. ‘The key to a successful cloud strategy is to evaluate your business’s individual workflows and work with a solution provider to select and integrate all the types of offerings needed to meet your specific requirements, enabling you to work seamlessly in one pane of glass,’ says Mike Callan, CEO of Swizznet.

Final thoughts
The cloud is continuing to mature and change. In fact, at some point, talk about what the cloud is and isn’t may stop entirely, as the technology itself takes a back seat to the capabilities it offers.

Editor’s note: This article was originally published September 2017 as ‘Confused about the cloud? How to achieve clarity.’

Sage Intacct Construction
Run your construction business with a native cloud accounting solution built for the specific needs of general contractors and real estate developers.

Learn how DevOps practices—from secure coding and CI/CD pipelines to container security and continuous monitoring—can help healthcare engineering teams automate and maintain HIPAA-compliant cloud hosting.

DevOps is no longer just an industry buzzword. It has become the standard approach to software delivery across industries and company sizes. The healthcare sector, historically slow to adopt new technology, is catching up—and increasingly running healthcare workloads in the cloud. That shift introduces a non-negotiable requirement: every part of the delivery pipeline must satisfy HIPAA’s data privacy and security rules.

This article explains what HIPAA requires, why a DevOps approach is well-suited to meeting those requirements, and the specific engineering practices—secure coding, CI/CD, container security, and compliance monitoring—that make automated HIPAA-compliant hosting achievable.

Managing Compliance in Healthcare Software

The volume of healthcare data being generated is growing rapidly. Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), Electronic Health Records (EHRs), health-monitoring wearables, and consumer health applications all produce sensitive patient data that must be stored, transmitted, and processed securely. Compliance is not optional. Healthcare data is governed by a layered set of regulations—primarily HIPAA and HITECH in the United States, and GDPR for any data touching EU residents. Failing to comply exposes organizations to significant financial penalties and reputational damage.

As compliance requirements grow more stringent and patients become more aware of their privacy rights, compliance must be treated as a first-class engineering concern—not an afterthought addressed just before an audit.

What Is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is United States federal legislation that establishes national standards for protecting sensitive patient health information. It requires healthcare providers, health insurers, and their business associates to implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect any personally identifiable health information—referred to as Protected Health Information (PHI).

Key HIPAA rules relevant to software and hosting teams include:

The Privacy Rule – governs who may access and use PHI.

The Security Rule – sets technical and administrative safeguards for electronic PHI (ePHI), including access controls, audit controls, integrity controls, and transmission security.

The Breach Notification Rule – requires covered entities to notify affected individuals and the Department of Health and Human Services when a breach of unsecured PHI occurs.

The HITECH Act strengthened HIPAA’s enforcement provisions and extended many requirements to business associates—including cloud service providers and DevOps toolchain vendors that handle ePHI.

Why DevOps Is the Right Approach for HIPAA Compliance

In traditional software delivery, security reviews happened at the end of a development cycle that could last months or years. That model is incompatible with both modern development velocity and modern compliance requirements. DevOps addresses this in several ways:

Compliance by design. DevOps integrates security and compliance checks into the pipeline from day one, rather than bolting them on at the end. Compliance becomes a continuous property of the system, not a gate that must be cleared before release.

Shared ownership. Traditional models placed compliance responsibility solely on a security team or legal counsel. DevOps breaks down silos between development, operations, and security, making every team member a stakeholder in maintaining HIPAA compliance.

Automation reduces human error. Many HIPAA violations stem from misconfiguration, unpatched systems, or access-control gaps—all areas where automation can dramatically reduce risk.

Auditable change history. Version control and CI/CD pipelines produce a documented trail of every change to code, configuration, and infrastructure, which is directly useful during HIPAA audits.

How to Automate HIPAA-Compliant Hosting Using DevOps

Choosing a HIPAA-eligible cloud service provider (one willing to sign a Business Associate Agreement) is a prerequisite, not a solution. The engineering practices you layer on top of that infrastructure determine whether your actual workloads remain compliant.

1. Design Security Into the Process (DevSecOps)

DevSecOps is the practice of integrating security controls directly into the DevOps pipeline. For HIPAA-bound workloads, this means:

Secure Coding

Static Application Security Testing (SAST) tools and open-source vulnerability scanners can be embedded in the developer workflow so that security issues are caught at the point of code authorship, not in production. Early detection lowers both the cost to fix and the risk of a breach. Examples of tooling in this space include static analyzers integrated with IDEs and pre-commit hooks that block code with known vulnerability patterns from entering the repository.

Version Control

All application code, infrastructure definitions (Infrastructure as Code), and configuration should be managed in a version control system. This ensures a complete, auditable history of every change. It also enables automated deployments and rollbacks, both of which are important for maintaining a stable, compliant system.

Continuous Integration

A CI pipeline automatically builds and tests the application every time code is committed. For HIPAA compliance, the CI pipeline should include automated unit tests, integration tests, and security scans. When a build fails—because a security scan flags a vulnerability, for example—the team is alerted immediately and can fix the problem before it propagates downstream.

Release Management

Deployments should be validated against a staging environment that mirrors production before any release reaches live data. A database architect or security reviewer should assess changes for production readiness. Whether deployment is fully automated or requires a manual approval gate depends on the sensitivity of the change, but every deployment should generate a log entry that is available for audit review.

2. Secure Cloud-Hosted Data and the CI/CD Pipeline

Cloud-native architectures—microservices, containers, and orchestration platforms—introduce their own security surface area. Static security policies written for monolithic on-premises systems are not sufficient. Security must be continuous and applied at every layer.

Standardize and Harden Environments

Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools to provision environments consistently. Automated configuration management eliminates the configuration drift that often leads to unauthorized access paths. For microservices architectures, enforce tight access control using a least-privilege model and centralize authentication through an identity provider rather than embedding credentials in services.

Encrypt Data and Secure API Gateways

ePHI must be encrypted both in transit and at rest—this is a direct HIPAA Security Rule requirement. Container orchestration platforms can enforce mutual TLS between services. API gateways provide a single, auditable ingress point that can enforce authentication, rate limiting, and access logging. Minimizing the number of publicly exposed API endpoints directly reduces the attack surface.

Isolate Containers

Containers holding ePHI should be isolated from containers that do not require access to that data, using network policies to restrict inter-service communication to only what is necessary. Container image scanning tools should be integrated into the CI pipeline to detect known vulnerabilities in base images and application dependencies before deployment.

Automate Security Testing

Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST), input validation tests, authentication and authorization tests, and dependency vulnerability scans should all run automatically as part of the build and deployment pipeline. Automation ensures these checks happen consistently on every release and produces documented evidence of the tests performed—a useful artifact during HIPAA audits.

Monitor Continuously for Compliance

Achieving HIPAA compliance at deployment time is not enough. HIPAA’s Security Rule requires ongoing monitoring of systems that handle ePHI. A mature DevOps monitoring practice should address the following:

Access monitoring. Log and alert on all access to systems containing ePHI. Unusual access patterns—access from unexpected IPs, access at unusual hours, bulk data exports—should trigger alerts for investigation.

Performance and availability monitoring. Application performance directly affects data availability, which HIPAA requires healthcare organizations to maintain. Monitor for latency regressions, error rate spikes, and service degradations that could affect access to patient data.

Breach detection and notification readiness. Monitoring pipelines should be configured to detect potential data breaches and surface them quickly enough to satisfy HIPAA’s breach notification timelines.

Audit log integrity. Audit logs must be tamper-evident and retained for the period required by HIPAA. Centralized log management with write-once storage provides both the evidence trail for audits and an early warning system for security incidents.

Configuration compliance scanning. Regularly scan running infrastructure against a known-good compliance baseline to detect any drift that could create compliance gaps between deployments.

Summary

HIPAA compliance is not a product you purchase—it is an ongoing engineering discipline. DevOps, and specifically the DevSecOps extension of it, provides the framework to make compliance continuous, automated, and auditable rather than periodic and manual. The key practices are: embed security early in the development cycle; use version control and CI/CD to create an auditable deployment history; harden container and microservices environments with encryption, access controls, and network isolation; and monitor production systems continuously for access anomalies and configuration drift.

Healthcare engineering teams that treat compliance as a shared, pipeline-level responsibility—rather than a checklist owned by a separate security team—will find it significantly easier to demonstrate HIPAA compliance during audits and to respond quickly when the threat landscape changes.

Deployment Models

The market report segmented version control hosting software into two primary deployment types:

Cloud-Based

Vendor-managed SaaS offerings where the provider handles infrastructure, uptime, backups, and upgrades. Examples include GitHub.com, GitLab.com, and Bitbucket Cloud. This model lowers operational overhead and suits teams without dedicated infrastructure staff.

Web-Based (Self-Hosted)

On-premises or private-cloud deployments where teams host the platform on their own infrastructure. GitLab Self-Managed, Gitea, Gogs, and Bitbucket Data Center fall into this category. This model is preferred in regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government) where data residency and network isolation are mandatory requirements.

Target Customer Segments

The report divided end users into two segments:

Large Enterprises – Organizations with complex compliance requirements, large engineering teams, and needs for advanced access control, auditing, SSO integration, and high availability. These buyers often evaluate self-hosted options and negotiate enterprise licensing.

SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) – Teams that prioritize ease of onboarding, predictable per-seat pricing, and minimal infrastructure management. SaaS-hosted platforms typically dominate this segment.

Regional Market Breakdown

The study segmented global adoption across five geographic regions, covering market value and growth rates from 2013 through the projected 2026 horizon:

North America – United States, Canada, Mexico

Europe – United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Central & Eastern Europe, CIS countries

Asia Pacific – China, Japan, South Korea, ASEAN nations, India, and the rest of Asia Pacific

Latin America – Brazil and the rest of Latin America

Middle East and Africa – Turkey, GCC countries, and the rest of the Middle East and Africa

North America and Europe historically account for the largest share of enterprise software spend, including developer tooling, though the Asia Pacific region—particularly India and China—was showing accelerating growth in developer community size and enterprise software adoption at the time of the report.

What to Look for When Evaluating a Version Control Hosting Platform

Market reports are useful for understanding the competitive landscape, but engineering teams need practical criteria when selecting a platform. Key evaluation dimensions include:

Repository type support – Git-only, or also SVN/Perforce/Mercurial? Critical for organizations migrating legacy systems.

Built-in CI/CD – Native pipeline execution reduces tool sprawl. GitLab and GitHub Actions are strong here; others rely on third-party integrations.

Access control granularity – Branch protection rules, required reviewers, CODEOWNERS, IP allowlisting, and SSO/SAML support.

Large file handling – Git LFS support or native large-binary management (critical for game dev, ML model storage, hardware design).

Compliance and audit logging – SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, and detailed audit trails matter in regulated sectors.

Pricing model – Per-seat, per-minute (CI), storage-based, or flat enterprise licensing. Total cost of ownership can diverge significantly between vendors at scale.

Migration tooling – How painful is it to move repositories, history, pull requests, and issue history between platforms?

Market Context: 2019 and Beyond

The 2019 timeframe captured an inflection point in the market. Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub closed in mid-2018, reassuring the enterprise market about GitHub’s longevity while simultaneously accelerating GitLab’s growth as some teams sought an independent alternative. JFrog was expanding beyond artifact management into a broader DevOps platform. Bitbucket was deepening Atlassian ecosystem integration. Several smaller players—Beanstalk, Springloops, Phabricator—have since reduced activity or been deprecated, illustrating the consolidation pressure in the market.

Engineers evaluating platforms today should verify the current ownership, support status, and roadmap of any tool before committing, as the landscape continues to evolve rapidly.

Summary

Version control hosting software sits at the center of modern software delivery. The 2019 market study highlighted a competitive field led by GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket, with specialized players like Helix Core, Gerrit, and JFrog serving specific niches. Deployment model (cloud-based vs. self-hosted) and customer segment (enterprise vs. SME) remain the primary axes along which vendors differentiate. For DevOps teams, selecting the right platform involves balancing CI/CD integration, access control, compliance requirements, and total cost—not just repository hosting capability alone.
