Source:-https://www.itworldcanada.com/

As Kermit the Frog famously sang, “it’s not easy being green,” yet it’s critical for our planet’s survival that we figure it out.

Ironically, the very tech we’re using to help in that effort could be making things worse. A 2019 survey conducted by Informa revealed that while datacentres use 3 percent of the world’s electricity, energy efficiency was only number four on IT leaders’ priority lists when creating a new datacentre. Yet those datacentres run the artificial intelligence and machine learning being used to understand and combat greenhouse gas emissions.

The price of AI
A 2019 report from the University of Massachusetts found that training and tuning a deep neural network can create the equivalent CO2 emissions of those produced in anything from just over two years of an average American’s life to more than seventeen years’ worth (depending on the model). Another study, also from 2019, found that the computations needed for deep learning research increased by 300,000x (no, that is not a typo!) between 2012 and 2018.

Going green
In an effort to combat the runaway emissions, at the Microsoft BUILD virtual conference last week, Microsoft, Accenture, GitHub, and ThoughtWorks announced that they have teamed up as founding members of the Green Software Foundation, a non-profit organization with the mission of creating an ecosystem of people, standards, tools, and best practices for building green software. It is part of the Joint Development Foundation Projects, an affiliate of the Linux Foundation.

What is green software
So what is green software? Sajay Podder, technology sustainability innovation lead at
Accenture explained. “The term green software relates to the design, development and use of software, and is a term we use to help companies consider the carbon emissions related to software with the intent to keep emissions as low as possible. It is important because while digital technologies are key to protecting the environment, that proliferation is also resulting in software’s growing carbon footprint,” he said. “But we also realize that it’s a new field, requiring new skills, new standards, new training and new tooling.” He said that when he discovered that a team at Microsoft was also looking at the issues, they began discussions about a collaboration, and the Green Software Foundation was born.

It’s all about the community, added Jeff Sandquist, corporate vice president of developer relations at Microsoft. Developers want to build apps that consider their impact on the

climate, and no one company or individual can do it alone. “For that to happen, we need to understand how to build green software, and folks need tools, and they need the knowledge to become qualified wherever they are in the world, on a really important matter,” he said. “And so our goal with this is to really establish best practices, set up standards, really work together. We’ll work together to be able to make sure that we create a great community of green software practitioners.”

Erica Brescia, chief operating officer at GitHub, said that GitHub joined with the goal to make it easier for developers to use and contribute to the global climate solution by empowering them with the right visibility and the right tools, so they can create and maintain green software themselves.

For ThoughtWorks, said Elise Zelechowski, global head of diversity, equity and inclusion, sustainability and social

change, sustainability and climate change mitigation is a priority. “We believe that the tech sector has a really important role to play here in taking action on climate,” she said. “We’re increasingly seeing our clients coming to us for thought leadership tools and advice on this. And while there’s a desire to take action, it’s not always clear where to start for them. ThoughtWorks is very excited to be joining the foundation to help define these standards to help organizations adapt and implement new tools, and to work with government, academia, nonprofits, and all of you and build this community to shape the vision of the work.”

The Eclipse Foundation announced Eclipse Che 7 at Oracle Code One 2019 — a browser-based, Kubernetes-native IDE designed to simplify cloud native application development, eliminate environment drift, and make onboarding new developers faster and more secure.

Originally announced at Oracle Code One, San Francisco, September 17, 2019. Source: globenewswire.com

Eclipse Che 7: A Kubernetes-Native IDE Built for Cloud Native Teams

The Eclipse Foundation announced Eclipse Che 7 at the Oracle Code One conference in San Francisco, positioning it as the first developer workspace server and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) purpose-built for creating cloud native, enterprise applications on Kubernetes. The release represents more than six years of community development, with contributions from over 20 vendors.

“Eclipse Che 7 is the culmination of more than six years of community contributions, including more than 20 vendors, delivering a tremendous boost to the productivity of cloud native development on Kubernetes,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “As the world’s first Kubernetes-native IDE, Che 7 makes the developer and production environments the same on a scalable, collaborative, and secure platform specifically designed for building containerized applications.”

The Problem Che 7 Solves

Kubernetes is powerful for running applications at scale, but its operational complexity creates a significant barrier for many developers. Most application developers are not Kubernetes specialists, yet they are increasingly expected to build applications that run on Kubernetes clusters. This creates friction: environment setup is time-consuming, onboarding new team members is slow, and local development environments rarely match production configurations.

Che 7 addresses this by abstracting away Kubernetes complexity. Developers get a fully configured, centrally hosted workspace that handles building and packaging applications for Kubernetes automatically. The result is a dramatically shorter path from writing code to running it in a production-like environment.

Key Features of Eclipse Che 7

Kubernetes-native workspaces: Every component of the development environment — the IDE, its plugins, and their dependencies — runs as a Kubernetes application. This makes environments repeatable and reproducible across the entire team.

Browser-based IDE powered by Eclipse Theia: Che 7 ships with a pre-packaged web-based IDE built on an extended version of Eclipse Theia, delivering a Visual Studio Code-compatible experience entirely in the browser. No local software installation is required.

Devfiles: A new Devfile specification allows teams to define workspace configurations as code, enabling any developer to spin up a pre-configured environment from a single file checked into source control.

Centrally hosted workspaces: Developer workspaces are hosted centrally, making it easy to share projects, enforce consistent tooling, and apply enterprise-grade security policies from a single control plane.

Flexible deployment: Che 7 supports deployment on public Kubernetes clusters as well as on-premises data centers, giving organizations the flexibility to meet their own compliance and infrastructure requirements.

Faster onboarding: New team members can begin contributing to a project immediately without spending time configuring local development environments, since all workspace definitions are shared and version-controlled.

Closing the Gap Between Development and Production

One of the persistent challenges in Kubernetes-based development is environment drift — the subtle differences between how an application runs on a developer’s laptop versus how it behaves in a production cluster. Che 7 eliminates this gap by running the development environment itself inside Kubernetes, using the same runtime stacks, container images, and orchestration infrastructure that production workloads use.

“With Che 7, everything a cloud native developer needs — including the IDE, its plugins, and their dependencies — is running as a Kubernetes application, so everything becomes repeatable and reproducible,” said Brad Micklea, Vice President, Developer Tools and Programs at Red Hat. “Now, developers can more quickly spin up a development environment in Kubernetes that mirrors a production application and Che will take care of adding the development, build and debugging tools needed for them. Anyone, anytime, can contribute to a project without installing software, thus enabling faster application development from a more secure, centrally hosted environment.”

Ecosystem Adoption and Vendor Integration

Eclipse Che and Eclipse Theia were already integrated into cloud native offerings from vendors including Google, IBM, and Broadcom at the time of the Che 7 release. Most notably, Che 7 forms the core of Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces, Red Hat’s developer environment solution for OpenShift.

Broadcom highlighted Che’s role in enabling mainframe developers to adopt modern DevOps workflows. “We’re delighted to be part of the Eclipse Che community bringing a modern, open approach to the mainframe platform,” said Jean-Louis Vignaud, Director, Product Management, DevOps and Open Mainframe at Broadcom. “Empowering developers with open source tools that deploy easily, facilitate on-boarding, and drive frictionless DevOps workflows across platforms is a cornerstone of our mainframe strategy.”

Nuxeo shared a practical migration story. “At Nuxeo, we have been using Eclipse Che 5 since its first days as our Developer Certification Platform,” said Arnaud Kervern, developer advocate at Nuxeo. “We’re currently migrating all of our internal services to Kubernetes. We’re seeing more and more activity spikes on our Developer Certification Platform so it seemed natural to move forward with Che 7 over Kubernetes to react faster to those scalability issues. With all the great new Che 7 features like Devfiles and Eclipse Theia IDE with Java Support, we’re already planning to create new improvements for our online customer experience on top of Che 7.”

Why This Matters for DevOps Teams

For DevOps teams managing Kubernetes-based CI/CD pipelines, Eclipse Che 7 addresses a common pain point: the development environment itself is often the least automated part of the software delivery chain. Che 7 brings the same infrastructure-as-code principles that govern production deployments to developer workspaces, making them version-controlled, auditable, and reproducible.

The security implications are also significant. Centrally hosted workspaces mean that source code and credentials need not leave the cluster. Developers work through a browser, reducing the risk of sensitive data being stored on personal devices. Access controls, workspace policies, and audit logs can be managed centrally by platform or security teams.

About the Eclipse Foundation

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides a mature, scalable, and commercially focused environment for open source software collaboration. It is home to the Eclipse IDE, Jakarta EE, and over 375 open source projects spanning IoT, automotive, geospatial, systems engineering, and other technology domains. The Foundation is supported by over 275 member organizations.

StarlingX 2.0 brings Kubernetes integration, containerized OpenStack services, and optional OpenStack deployment, marking a major step forward for edge and IoT cloud infrastructure.

Originally reported by ITPro Today. Quotes attributed to Ildiko Vancsa (OpenStack Foundation) and Glenn Seiler (Wind River Systems).

The OpenStack Foundation’s StarlingX project reached a significant milestone in mid-2019 with the release of version 2.0 of its edge computing cloud infrastructure platform. The update delivers deeper Kubernetes integration, containerized OpenStack services, and a cleaner upstream OpenStack codebase — changes that collectively make StarlingX a more practical choice for organizations deploying cloud workloads at the network edge.

What Is StarlingX?

StarlingX is an open-source cloud infrastructure platform designed specifically for edge computing and IoT use cases. Originally based on code contributed by Wind River Systems, it debuted under the OpenStack Foundation in late 2018. The platform targets environments where compute resources must operate at the edges of a network — such as 5G base stations, remote industrial facilities, and small branch offices — rather than in centralized data centers.

Unlike general-purpose cloud platforms optimized for large-scale core data centers, StarlingX is engineered around the constraints of edge deployments: limited hardware footprint, intermittent connectivity, strict latency requirements, and the need for high reliability with minimal on-site IT staff.

Key Changes in StarlingX 2.0

Kubernetes Integration

The most significant architectural change in version 2.0 is the integration of Kubernetes as the container orchestration layer. This makes it straightforward for operators to deploy and manage containerized workloads at edge sites, without needing a separate orchestration platform.

“The platform went through a drastic change with the transformation to leverage the benefits of using container technologies,” said Ildiko Vancsa, ecosystem technical lead at the OpenStack Foundation. “The community has been working hard since the 1.0 release to build an open infrastructure solution for edge and IoT use cases … utilizing multiple well-known open-source components.”

Containerized OpenStack Services

Starting with version 2.0, OpenStack services themselves run inside containers. This approach simplifies deployment, improves upgrade manageability, and isolates control plane services from the underlying host. The platform integrates OpenStack and Kubernetes components using Airship — an OpenStack Foundation project for automated cloud provisioning — to provide both flexibility and robustness.

Upgrade to OpenStack Stein

Glenn Seiler, vice president of open source strategy at Wind River Systems, highlighted the upgrade from OpenStack Pike to OpenStack Stein (released April 2019) as another major improvement. The previous StarlingX 1.0 release carried significant technical debt in the form of patches applied on top of Pike. With 2.0, the project now runs a largely unmodified “vanilla” OpenStack, reducing maintenance burden and improving long-term supportability.

Security Enhancements

Version 2.0 adds two notable security features:

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) support: Enables secure storage of cryptographic secrets using hardware TPM devices.

UEFI Secure Boot: Adds firmware-level boot integrity verification to protect against low-level tampering.

Precision Time Protocol (PTP) Support

StarlingX 2.0 also adds support for the Precision Time Protocol (PTP), which provides highly accurate clock synchronization across a network. This is critical for industrial automation and telecom environments where Network Time Protocol (NTP) does not offer sufficient precision — for example, synchronizing equipment across a factory floor or within a telecom radio access network.

OpenStack Is No Longer Required

Despite being an OpenStack Foundation project, StarlingX 2.0 does not require OpenStack for all deployment scenarios. Organizations that only need to run containerized workloads can deploy on bare metal using Kubernetes alone, without provisioning the full OpenStack stack.

If virtual machine (VM) support is needed, StarlingX packages the OpenStack services and VMs inside containers. Some OpenStack-derived services do remain on the controller in all configurations — Keystone for identity and secret management, and Horizon for the administrative web interface — but these do not impose an OpenStack dependency on container workloads themselves.

“There isn’t any OpenStack dependency on container workloads.”
Glenn Seiler, VP of Open Source Strategy, Wind River Systems

StarlingX in the Edge Computing Landscape

The edge computing space was already crowded with competing platforms and reference architectures in 2019. Seiler argued that StarlingX differentiates itself through pre-integration: all component dependencies, version pinning, and integration testing are handled by the project before release, rather than being left to operators to configure themselves.

Many competing projects provide reference architectures or loosely validated component combinations, but require substantial operator effort to achieve a production-ready configuration. Seiler’s position is that StarlingX aims to be genuinely deployment-ready out of the box.

Wind River has also indicated that StarlingX would form the technical foundation for a future commercial product offering, though specifics were not disclosed at the time of the 2.0 release.

What Comes Next for StarlingX?

With 2.0 shipped, the StarlingX community outlined an accelerated release cadence. Vancsa indicated that StarlingX 3.0 was targeted for later in 2019, and that subsequent releases would follow a cycle-trailing model aligned with the OpenStack release calendar — meaning two releases per year.

The community also announced expanded investment in testing, including sanity testing, robustness testing, and exploration of performance benchmarking.

“StarlingX is a very friendly and open community which is still growing and looking for participation and feedback from anyone who is interested in the platform or the use cases it is designed to provide a solution for.”
Ildiko Vancsa, Ecosystem Technical Lead, OpenStack Foundation

Summary

StarlingX 2.0 represents a substantial architectural maturation of the platform: Kubernetes is now a first-class citizen, OpenStack services are fully containerized, the OpenStack base has been upgraded and de-patched, and new security and timing features address real edge and telecom requirements. For DevOps and infrastructure teams evaluating edge cloud platforms, StarlingX 2.0 is worth examining — particularly for 5G, industrial IoT, and distributed enterprise scenarios where pre-integrated, deployment-ready infrastructure reduces operational risk.
