Hello, my dear friends, welcome to the most abundant part of programming that makes your life very great with enormous pleasure because this is the place where everyone should want to know that what is worth it? and how it plays an important role in real life. So, today we will learn about how can you fork a project and manage them. For this, I will go very basic step by step. I wish that you will read it till the end.

What is a fork?

Let’s understand this. In very simple words, a fork is a copy of a project, forking a pro/repo allows you to make changes without affecting the original project or copy. Whenever you want to make changes to the project or you do not want to change anything in the original copy then you can create a fork that you can create a copy and make your changes. And later on, you can merge with the original project as well.

How to fork a project?

So, here is step no.1

Step 1: log in to Gitlab and go to your project

So, you will go to your Gitlab and sign in or log in with your credentials. And then you will go to your project where there will be your single project. You can also go from there with the above project option. You will see, your project will be there then you can also go to your projects from there as well.

Step 2: Click on the fork button

So, there on your projects. You will see, there will be a button. That will be a fork, in your project. When you will click on that button then you will get a message like No spaces available for the name to fork the project.

I tell you that what will you do? When you will see a message like this. You will see a group option on the top menu then you will click on your groups. And once, you will have it on the group screen. You will see the New Group option beside the corner. Then, you will click on that and give your group name and description. If you want to keep public or private, you can do that with one click. So, your group will have created at that time. If you will go back to your project and there you will again click on the fork option. So, they will ask to select a namespace to fork the project and you will see, your created group will be there. Then you will see that the project has successfully forked. You can also create merge requests over there.

For example, On the copy of the project, you can make some changes, and once, you have to change. If you create a merge request to merge with your original branch. Then you will do a new merge request so, you will select source branch and branch name and after that, you will also select the target branch & their name. And you will click on compare branches & continue. If any changes will have been done there so, it will see in that but you will have not done any changes in the copied or forked project. Then, it will show you as usual. If you have done any changes in that & you will do submit a merge request then you will have to realize the changes and you can submit back. And this is how you can do forking of a project and a copy of the project.

Hello folks, welcome to the exotic world of programming. Let’s take a move to the scene of the fork and its contribution in that how can we do fork and contribution in GitHub. If you would understand that each and every aspect of account creation, making a repository, and creating the branch in GitHub then this is the place where you can great ideology on the fork.

Adding more features

Suppose you have opened your profile and there is a repository of your like “GitHub training” and one of your files is there from the name of requirement.txt. So, you have to do designing of two features like dark mode and video calls but you don’t know how to do that? Then there is a contributor, it can make dark mode or one type of front hand. If anybody wants to contribute so, how will they do?

Contributing to the code

Suppose, you are a contributor and you are opened your own profile in the next browser. If you want to contribute to your GitHub project through your name like in beaproplayer and GitHub training then you will search like beaproplayer024/GitHub training in the GitHub search bar. So, there will have come of your repositories and requirement.txt file will open and from there you can create the file. When you will do create a file then the notification will come there like this way “you don’t have access to”. Because you have opened your own profile how can you get access to another profile id? You’re not a contributor and you have no right to doing changes in files. So, you will have to create a fork for this, what does it mean? It means that they have made a replica or you can say mirror for this. When you will do changes to this then one request will have to send to the beaproplayer024 profile. Suppose, you have to add a dark mode design, making a text file, you are making a darkmode.txt file. You are adding like designing, video calls, features adding and thanks, after this, you will have written like dark mode design adding in the propose new file. As you will do propose a new file then there will come a pull request option, you will have to do a pull request.

Forking in GitHub

You have done pull requests and there are all your files. If you have to do merge your file in that repository then you will have to send one request. When you will do pull requests then the front hand of your dark mode will be ready. When you will go to your profile beaproplayer so, you will see one pull request will have come there.

Analyzing the contributed code

If you will see a pull request, as well as one fork, will be there, what does it mean? If any contributor has to do contribute towards yourself so, how much contribute is happening as much fork happens. After this, you will go to pull request, you will see dark mode adding file there, what code has sent by the user? So, before, you will see about the code what is in that? You will move in a commit and see what is written in that code? There will be a dark mode design. Like this way, you will do verify that. After this, you will go to pull request and merge request, again you will do confirm request then your file will be merged from status open. After this, when you will go to code then your darkmode.txt file will have come which will be in the master branch. Those files will locate in your profile master branch and you can also see contributor or fork there. Like as your contribution happens and like this way, you can contribute to any project. When you will return back to your profile, below your profile activity option will exist there.

Merging the contributed code to the master branch

In your profile, every activity will show to you. Those files, you have added to it. If you would see in your profile changes will have happened and dark mode will have added to it. So, this is the contribution, you can do like this. You have seen, how can you do contribute to it and how can other users do contribute to your project. You have seen about all of these things.

Learn how to fork an Android library from GitHub, increment its version, and update the dependency reference in your app's build.gradle file.

When you fork an Android library from GitHub, make changes, and want to consume that updated library in another project, you need to understand how Gradle versioning works. This guide walks through the process of incrementing a library version and updating the corresponding dependency declaration in your app’s
build.gradle
file.

The Problem

A common scenario: you’ve forked an Android library project on GitHub, cloned it locally (for example via SourceTree), made your own changes, and now want to reference your updated version from another app using Gradle. You need to bump the version so Gradle can distinguish your build from the original.

For example, you might want to move from:

implementation 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.1'

…to your newly versioned build:

implementation 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.2'

Step 1: Update the Version in the Library’s build.gradle

Open the library module’s
build.gradle
file (not the app module — the library module itself). Look for the version declaration. Depending on how the library is set up, you will find something like one of the following patterns:

// In the library's build.gradle
group    = 'com.github.lib'
version  = '0.3.1'

// Or inside android {} block:
defaultConfig {
    versionName "0.3.1"
    versionCode 1
}

Increment the version to reflect your changes. Following semantic versioning, a patch-level fix increments the third number:

group    = 'com.github.lib'
version  = '0.3.2'

Step 2: Publish or Reference Your Updated Library

After incrementing the version, you have several options to make the library available to your other project:

Publish to a local Maven repository — Run
./gradlew publishToMavenLocal
in the library project. Your updated artifact will be available in your local
~/.m2
repository.

Publish to JitPack — If your fork is pushed to GitHub, JitPack can serve it as a dependency directly from your repository. Tag a release and reference it using the JitPack coordinates.

Use a local file dependency — Reference the generated
.aar
or
.jar
file directly as a local module dependency without publishing to any repository.

Step 3: Update the Dependency in Your App’s build.gradle

Open your consuming app’s
build.gradle
(Module: app) and find the
dependencies
block. Update the version string to match the new version you declared in the library:

dependencies {
    // Old version
    // implementation 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.1'

    // Updated to your new version
    implementation 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.2'
}

After editing the file, click Sync Now in Android Studio (or run
./gradlew build
from the command line) to pull in the updated dependency.

Note on the compile Directive

The original question used
compile
, which was the standard dependency configuration in older versions of the Android Gradle plugin. Since Android Gradle Plugin 3.0,
compile
has been deprecated and replaced with
implementation
(or
api
for transitive exposure). Use
implementation
in modern projects:

// Deprecated (AGP < 3.0)
compile 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.2'

// Correct for AGP 3.0+
implementation 'com.github.lib:library-name:0.3.2'

Quick Reference: Version Bump Checklist

Make your code changes in the forked library project.

Increment the
version
(and optionally
versionCode
/
versionName
) in the library’s
build.gradle
.

Build and publish the library (local Maven, JitPack, or file dependency).

Update the version string in your app’s
build.gradle
dependencies block.

Sync Gradle and verify the build succeeds.
