Source:-https://edtechnology.co.uk/ It’s been 12 months since lockdown became our reality. Every aspect of our lives has been impacted. Almost every […]

Source:-https://edtechnology.co.uk/

It’s been 12 months since lockdown became our reality. Every aspect of our lives has been impacted. Almost every educational institution has faced unprecedented disruption as the pandemic pushed them online much earlier than planned.

As a result, the edtech sector grew by 72% last year, driven largely by cloud computing. At its core, cloud computing refers to running workloads remotely using fully managed computing resources over the internet. These resources primarily consist of computing power and data storage which can be used to run any kind of computer system.

While not traditionally associated with the education sector, cloud computing has helped keep the education market going throughout the pandemic.

1. It opened up education material to the masses
One of the biggest challenges institutions have faced has been making education materials available to students. With libraries closed and no face-to-face teaching since March last year, many students have struggled to access the resources they need to complete their studies.

As a result, the market for digital textbooks has grown significantly. Many universities have partnered with online services such as Perlego to provide their students with access to digital textbooks. Rather than trek to the library or seek out illegal versions, students can now access over 500,000 academic, professional and non-fiction eBooks in one place.

2. It provides students with additional support
There has been a real drive for technology that supports students and staff; a common example being chatbots which are integrated into existing learning management systems (LMS) to assist students and free up teachers’ time. The capacity of this cloud technology allows universities to store information about student preferences and provide customisable solutions to their problems, delivering a bespoke learning experience for each individual. However, we are still at the very early stages of this technology, and there is so much more that can be done for the benefit of learning communities.

3. It saves universities thousands of pounds
Thanks to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing, organisations are no longer having to buy and maintain their own IT infrastructure. Everything can be hosted within the cloud, making it cost efficient, on-demand, secure, fast, reliable and scalable. This is why most organisations, including educational institutions, have been slowly migrating their on-premise infrastructure to the cloud in recent years. There is a large cost implication with buying and maintaining physical infrastructures, and due to the pandemic, many universities unfortunately experienced massive budget cuts, accelerating their move towards cloud-based technology.

4. It allows people to work at their own pace
With the removal of in-person teaching, many students have suddenly been left to create their own work schedule as they can no longer go to campus for lectures. Cloud computing makes it possible for students to access the most up-to-date version of assignments and receive updates when changes have been made. Students are able to continue to access the best material they need to complete their studies and learn at their own pace.

5. It’s here to stay
The pandemic has pushed educational institutions online earlier than planned, but many of the technologies will remain in place when the pandemic subsides. As students become accustomed to the newly adopted way of learning, educational institutions will want to keep them in place – especially if they are found to be useful and contribute to a better student experience. While students will eventually return to campus and resume in-person teaching, many universities may take the opportunity to offer more online courses and expand their remote student base. Geography will no longer be as big of a barrier to international students seeking higher education from institutions in different countries.

6. It enables collaboration
Cloud technology is enabling students to collaborate with each other more easily online. From video conferencing tools to document sharing, note sharing and collaborative revision tools, these sorts of technologies are being adopted by universities and, in many cases, directly by students themselves. It has been important for universities to be proactive about this shift towards the digital in order to help their students succeed in the best way possible online. Many of these tools are going to completely change the way in which students learn and collaborate with each other for good.

Navigating this new landscape of possible cloud technologies that can facilitate learning to meet the short-term needs brought on by the pandemic, as well as putting in place solutions that will work for the long-term, is a challenge that all universities face – but one that’s worth pursuing.

Source:-https://indiaeducationdiary.in/

New Delhi: The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced new initiatives to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in India, by empowering school students with cloud computing skills, and enabling entrepreneurs to build innovative education technology (EdTech) solutions on the cloud.

A Statement of Intent (SoI) was signed between NITI Aayog and Amazon Internet Services Private Limited (AISPL), which undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in India.

As per the SoI, AIM will leverage AWS Educate, Amazon’s global program that provides resources for students and educators to accelerate cloud-related learning. This program will introduce the fundamentals of cloud computing such as cloud storage, virtual compute power, web hosting, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and virtual reality (VR), to students at more than 7000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in India. AWS will also conduct Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) for the personnel in-charge at the ATLs, and provide resources and tools at each ATL to expedite student learning, and enable them to create and build solutions on the cloud.

AIM will also adopt AWS EdStart, a virtual startup accelerator program that enables EdTech startups to develop innovative teaching and learning solutions on AWS. EdTech startup entrepreneurs and founders in more than 80 Atal Incubation Centers (AICs) and Atal Community Innovation Centers (ACICs), will be able to apply for AWS EdStart program benefits, such as AWS Promotional Credits, mentorship, and technical trainings, to help speed their growth.

Mission Director – Atal Innovation Mission, R. Ramanan said the collaboration with AWS will equip the talented youth of the country with digital and web-based tools that can enhance their creative and innovative capabilities, in turn helping the nation to grow manifold in its innovation and entrepreneurship network. “The education and tools will establish a strong foundation in cloud computing for students of ATLs across India, while the support of AWS EdStart for startups from AICs and ACICs will accelerate their productization and potential commercialization,” he said.

President, Public Sector – AISPL, AWS India and South Asia, Rahul Sharma asserted that India will need nine times as many digital skilled workers by 2026, according to the report Unlocking APAC’s Digital Potential: Changing Digital Skill Needs and Policy Approaches, prepared by strategy and economics consulting firm AlphaBeta, and commissioned by AWS. “AWS is committed to bridging the digital skills gap in cloud computing, and empowering entrepreneurs to build innovative products and services on the cloud. We are focused on helping customers deliver transformational change and experiential learning at scale. It is a privilege to team up with Atal Innovation Mission to foster ideation, curiosity, and innovation among India’s students and youth,” he added.

Other areas of collaboration between AIM and AWS include joint workshops, tech marathons, and national challenges to develop solutions on the cloud, while solving local community problems, or sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Source:-https://www.flagstaffbusinessnews.com

Leaders in the technology industry say that cloud-based computing is not only the future, but it is already here.
Coconino Community College has joined other colleges across Arizona in a statewide effort to increase access to cloud computing education in schools. On Thursday, the Arizona Commerce Authority announced the initiative, with the support of Amazon Web Services, Inc., which has a goal to train and certify 5,000 students in the state for entry-level cloud computing careers by June 2022.
“CCC is committed to serving the local community and the local labor force, and this initiative does both,” said Lisa Blank, CCC’s Dean of Career and Technical Education, adding that CCC will be ready to offer the training in time for the spring semester.
Instead of individuals and businesses purchasing expensive hardware to run computer systems, they rent off-site computing services at much lower initial costs, said Duane Marshall, Computer Information Systems faculty at CCC who will be teaching the AWS courses.
“They rent it by the time used,” Marshall said. “It’s sort of like a timeshare for IT. The nice thing about that is it moves expenditures, in a business standpoint, from capital to a monthly rotation.”
And, of course, cloud-based computing services are scalable, Marshall added. For instance, if a business website goes from 100 visits to 10,000 visits a day, cloud services can easily scale to handle the increase without the purchase of additional hardware to scale it from there.
The plan is to integrate AWS programs in cloud computing education into CCC’s IT programs for certification, Marshall said.
Blank said that cloud-based work can be performed anywhere there is a reliable Internet connection. Therefore, the certifications will allow residents the chance to stay in their home communities and still earn a significant salary that could improve the quality of life for their families and their communities.
“It’s our mission, and it’s important to us to find new ways to help members of our communities,” Blank said.
Marshall said that CCC is planning on having an initial course in Foundations and Architecting (building a system out in the cloud) up and running for spring semester. Subsequently, additional classes will be added to give students a leg up on AWS certification exams.
“Success on the AWS exams means, on average, people can earn $90,000 to $100,000 a year, starting out,” Marshall said. One of the biggest gaps in the technology field right now is in cloud foundations and the education that goes along with it.

CCC has served residents across 18,000 square miles of Coconino County since 1991. The College has the goal of improving the lives of our residents through workforce development and higher education.
CCC provides affordable tuition and more than 50 certificate programs and two-year associate degrees in academic and career fields. CCC also has programs that ease student transition to any of the three state universities, including the award-winning CCC2NAU.
CCC reaches out to the more rural portions of the County and Tribal Lands. Instructional sites offer classes through online, in-person and Zoom video conferencing classes to meet the needs of students in rural and remote areas. Nearly 20 percent of CCC’s students are Native American learners.

The SKIL Framework from the DevOps Institute puts people at the center of DevOps transformation, addressing the growing skills gap through a structured approach to skill development, knowledge building, idea sharing, and continuous learning.

This article is based on reporting originally published by SD Times and a 2019 announcement from the DevOps Institute.

Why the Human Side of DevOps Matters

DevOps conversations are often dominated by toolchains, automation pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code. But the DevOps Institute argues that technology alone is not the limiting factor in most DevOps transformations — people are. To address this, the Institute introduced the SKIL Framework, a structured model designed to guide individuals and organizations through the process of upskilling for DevOps.

“We really feel very strongly that while automation is obviously a critical success factor for DevOps, it really is the human factor that’s going to make a difference,” said Jayne Groll, CEO of the DevOps Institute, in an interview with SD Times.

What Is the SKIL Framework?

SKIL is an acronym standing for Skill, Knowledge, Ideas, and Learning. It is a holistic model created by the DevOps Institute to give practitioners and organizations a coherent path to developing DevOps competencies — without prescribing allegiance to any single methodology such as ITIL or Agile.

“We recognize that we needed to create a framework that helps people understand how to transform without being specific to things like ITIL or Agile,” Groll said. “DevOps is really about continuous learning and mastery.”

The Skills Gap Driving the Framework

According to the Upskilling: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report 2019 published by the DevOps Institute, organizations identified the top three skills they needed as:

Automation skills — scripting, CI/CD tooling, infrastructure automation

Process skills — workflow design, release management, value stream mapping

Soft skills — collaboration, communication, empathy, and adaptability

The inclusion of soft skills in the top three was described as unexpected by the report’s authors, but it reinforces the DevOps Institute’s position that technical proficiency alone is insufficient. Groll noted that a shortage of these critical skills is behind many of the challenges organizations face when attempting to adopt or scale DevOps practices.

The Four Elements of SKIL

Each element of the framework targets a different dimension of professional development:

1. Skill

Focuses on measurable, demonstrable career growth. This includes certifications, skill assessments, and defined learning paths that individuals can point to on a CV or résumé. The goal is to give practitioners tangible credentials that validate their expertise to employers and peers.

2. Knowledge

Covers rich, substantive content that supplements day-to-day practice. This includes research reports, case studies, whitepapers, and books. Knowledge resources are meant to provide deeper context and insight beyond what a certification or course syllabus can cover.

3. Ideas

Emphasizes peer-to-peer exchange and community engagement. This element encompasses Skillup events, Slack community groups, networking opportunities, and forums where practitioners can share experiences, debate approaches, and learn from one another’s successes and failures.

4. Learning

Supports continuous, lifelong learning rather than point-in-time training. This includes listening to thought leaders, following emerging research, and pursuing structured learning paths that lead toward genuine mastery rather than checkbox compliance.

Context for Individuals and Organizations

One of the practical problems the SKIL Framework aims to solve is the lack of direction that many practitioners face when they are told to “upskill” without being given guidance on how. There is no shortage of available resources — bootcamps, MOOCs, university programs, conference talks, and freely available video content all exist — but without a structured framework, it can be difficult to know where to start or how to sequence learning effectively.

Groll stated that SKIL is intended to provide that context both for individual contributors trying to advance their careers and for engineering managers or HR leaders trying to build upskilling programs for their teams.

Where SKIL Fits in the Broader DevOps Landscape

Unlike prescriptive frameworks that mandate specific tools or processes, SKIL is deliberately methodology-agnostic. It does not compete with Agile, SAFe, ITIL 4, or any other framework — instead, it acts as a meta-layer that helps practitioners navigate whichever methodologies are relevant to their context.

For DevOps engineers and platform teams, the practical takeaway is straightforward: technical skills matter, but they are not sufficient on their own. Building knowledge, staying connected to the broader community, and committing to continuous learning are equally important factors in a sustainable DevOps career or a successful organizational transformation.

More information about the DevOps Institute and its programs is available at devopsinstitute.com.
