What is Magento?

Magento is a leading open-source e-commerce platform designed to enable merchants to build highly customizable, scalable, and feature-rich online stores. Originally released in 2008 and later acquired by Adobe, Magento has evolved into one of the most flexible and robust e-commerce solutions, serving small businesses to enterprise-level organizations globally.

Magento’s key strength lies in its modular architecture, enabling developers and merchants to extend or modify the core functionality without impacting the base system. The platform supports complex product types, multi-store capabilities, advanced marketing tools, and seamless integration with various payment gateways, shipping providers, and third-party services.

There are two primary editions of Magento:

Magento Open Source: A free version suitable for startups and small to medium businesses, allowing full access to the platform’s core features.

Magento Commerce (Adobe Commerce): A paid, enterprise-grade solution that includes advanced functionalities, cloud hosting, security features, and dedicated support.

Magento supports both B2C and B2B commerce and has extensive community support, a rich ecosystem of extensions, and professional services.

Major Use Cases of Magento

Magento is used widely due to its flexibility and power. Some major use cases include:

1. Traditional Online Retail Stores

Magento enables retailers to showcase extensive product catalogs with configurable, bundled, and downloadable products. It supports complex pricing, discounts, and promotional campaigns essential for retail success.

2. B2B E-commerce

Magento provides B2B-specific features like company accounts, custom pricing, quick order forms, and quote requests. These tools streamline business purchasing processes and enhance enterprise client experiences.

3. Multi-Store and Multi-Vendor Platforms

Merchants can operate multiple storefronts from a single Magento installation, each with distinct branding, products, and customer groups. Marketplaces can be built on Magento with multi-vendor extensions.

4. Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce)

Magento supports responsive themes and Progressive Web Apps (PWA), enabling merchants to deliver fast, app-like shopping experiences on mobile devices.

5. International E-commerce

Magento’s native multi-currency, multi-language, and localized tax and shipping support help merchants expand globally while complying with local regulations.

6. Subscription and Digital Goods

Merchants can sell subscriptions, digital downloads, and services alongside physical goods, offering flexibility in product offerings.

7. Custom Personalized Shopping Experiences

Magento’s modular design allows integration of AI-powered recommendations, personalized promotions, and loyalty programs to increase customer engagement.

How Magento Works Along with Architecture

Magento’s architecture is sophisticated and built for extensibility, performance, and scalability. Understanding its architecture is key to effective deployment and customization.

High-Level Architectural Overview

Magento’s architecture follows a modular MVC (Model-View-Controller) pattern with layered components:

1. Presentation Layer (Frontend)

The frontend displays the storefront to customers and manages user interactions.

Uses technologies such as PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Knockout.js, RequireJS, and LESS.

Supports themes and templates to customize the look and feel.

2. Business Logic Layer (Model + Service Layer)

Contains the core logic for handling business rules such as product management, pricing, inventory, promotions, checkout, and customer accounts.

Encapsulated in PHP classes within modules for clean separation and reusability.

3. Data Access Layer (Model and Resource Models)

Interacts with the underlying database, encapsulating SQL queries and entity management.

Magento uses a combination of relational database models, including the Entity-Attribute-Value (EAV) model for flexible product attributes.

4. Database Layer

Magento primarily uses MySQL or MariaDB databases.

Uses database indexing for optimizing queries and caching for faster performance.

5. API Layer

Exposes RESTful and GraphQL APIs for integration with third-party systems, mobile apps, and headless commerce setups.

6. Cache and Session Management

Employs caching technologies like Redis, Varnish, and built-in caches to reduce database load and improve page load speeds.

Manages user sessions securely.

7. Admin Panel (Backend)

A fully featured admin interface for store configuration, product management, order processing, customer management, and reporting.

8. Modularity and Extensibility

Magento’s system is built on modularity, allowing installation of extensions that add or modify functionality without affecting the core codebase.

Dependency Injection and Service Contracts allow for customization while maintaining upgrade safety.

Basic Workflow of Magento

Magento’s workflow encompasses the customer journey and administrative processes:

1. Product Catalog Management

Store administrators create and configure products, categorize them, set prices, and assign inventory levels.

2. Customer Browsing and Search

Visitors browse the catalog, filter by attributes, or search products using Elasticsearch-powered search for fast results.

3. Shopping Cart and Checkout

Customers add products to their carts and proceed through a multi-step checkout process where shipping, taxes, and payment options are calculated.

4. Order Placement and Processing

Magento handles order validation, payment authorization, and generates order records for fulfillment.

5. Inventory and Shipping

Inventory levels are updated automatically, and shipping integrations allow label printing and tracking.

6. Customer Account Management

Customers can track orders, manage addresses, view purchase history, and manage preferences.

7. Marketing and Promotions

Merchants use Magento’s tools to create coupons, discounts, cross-sells, and up-sells.

8. Reporting and Analytics

Store owners analyze sales trends, customer behavior, and inventory via dashboards and reports.

Step-by-Step Getting Started Guide for Magento

Step 1: Prepare Your Environment

Source:-https://www.pymnts.com/ We’re seeing a shift in financial services that will have a lingering — and, in some ways, permanent — […]

Source:-https://www.pymnts.com/

We’re seeing a shift in financial services that will have a lingering — and, in some ways, permanent — impact on payments, hastened by the continued migration of financial institutions (FIs) and merchants to the cloud.

In an interview with PYMNTS, Mark Smith, head of payments for financial services at Amazon Web Services (AWS), said that “COVID has changed the conversation we’ve been having with payment customers, and it’s accelerated the trends we’ve been seeing over the past few years.”

Much of that changing conversation has to do with a pivot in consumer behavior, he said, which has spurred AWS’ own customers to migrate to cloud applications. “We all recognize that payments transactions are ‘bursty,’” Smith told PYMNTS. “We see a lot of this during the holidays and with seasonal shifts. But we weren’t ready for this kind of panic-buying, all done online.” One reason is to enhance card processing, as firms on the merchant processing side — which are focused on eCommerce — need to scale up and down as necessary based on those aforementioned shifts in consumer behavior, and as more transactions move online.

AWS, in another tailwind accelerating enterprises to the cloud, has encountered concerns from clients about preventing fraudsters from capitalizing on volume trends toward card-not-present transactions, he said.

Transforming Credit Decisioning

The cloud is also helping to transform credit decisioning amid some of the financial hardships wrought by the pandemic. Many of the ways that AWS customers are using data to lend and to make credit decisions must adapt to the fact that pandemic-related financial hardships might not be a clear indicator of future creditworthiness.

Smith pointed to the trend that he believes could prove to be the stickiest: emerging payments. Many of AWS’ customers had been focused on moving to contactless or taking advantage of faster payments even before COVID-19. “When we come out of the pandemic, many of the initiatives are going to stick around,” he predicted. Smith mentioned that customers like Venmo, a rapidly growing peer-to-peer (P2P) payments app with over 60 million active users, as well as touch-free payment options including quick-response code (QRC) solutions, tap-to-pay or in-app purchases.

Against that backdrop, financial institutions (FIs) are tightening their focus to improve how they engage with their end customers — reaching toward creating frictionless payment experiences with, for instance, QR codes or voice commerce, sidestepping the physical handovers of cards or cash. And AWS’ corporate clients are increasingly interested in newer, alternative payment methods such as central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), but must tackle the challenges of legacy infrastructure.

“Even for customers like FinTechs that have been around for only 10 or so years — and maybe aren’t dependent on the mainframe — we’ve been working with them to break down the ‘monolith’ into microservices using experts with domain expertise,” Smith said. Data, of course, fuels the cloud — and, as Smith noted, payments contain a wealth of data, both real-time and historical.

In payments, he said, there have been two focal points for data analytics. One, as mentioned above, is around fraud prevention, and the other is tied to credit. From a fraud prevention standpoint, NuData Security (part of Mastercard) enhances authentication by analyzing users’ digital profiles with passive biometrics. As a user interacts with the system, hundreds of anonymized data points are analyzed in real time — from typographic rates to patterns in technology use — to detect anomalous activity before a fraudulent transaction occurs.

Firms have been building data lakes and using machine learning to make rapid decisions and open up new pools of customers (particularly among unbanked/underbanked and thin-credit or no-credit-file customers). A good example of this is the San Francisco-based, born-in-the-cloud FinTech Affirm, which delivers consumer financing in the form of installment loans through thousands of retailers. Using machine learning from AWS, Affirm is able to make loan underwriting decisions in seconds, not days. Smith continues, “At Affirm, better credit decisioning has increased merchant orders by 85 percent and repeat orders by 20 percent.”

Corporates will thrive, post-pandemic, with modern data analytics — and, in a way, automation is a form of liberty, since shifting manual tasks to automation enables organizations to offload undifferentiated heavy lifting to AWS and focus on their core business and customers.

“This is an unprecedented shift in behavior, and financial institutions and payment customers realize they need to step back and say, ‘how do we more nimbly and easily adapt to changing customer behaviors and expectations?’” Smith told PYMNTS.

Source:-https://securityboulevard.com DevOps is transforming how organizations across industries from banking to eCommerce to healthcare build and deliver cloud native applications. […]

Source:-https://securityboulevard.com

DevOps is transforming how organizations across industries from banking to eCommerce to healthcare build and deliver cloud native applications. With DevOps, new application functionality can be delivered in rapid iterations and at scale, driving agile innovation to meet increasing customer demands and build competitive advantage.

A recent Harvard Business Review Analytic Services study found that roughly two-thirds of respondents use DevOps, and see benefits that impact their bottom line, including increased speed to market (identified by 70% of respondents), productivity (67%), customer relevance (67%), innovation (66%), and product/service quality (64%).

Using continuous integration methods (CI), developers merge code changes to a repository multiple times a day, which are automatically integrated into builds. Through continuous delivery (CD), code is always in a deployable state so it’s ready for release into production at the touch of a button.

As custom-built cloud applications are built and delivered using these agile DevOps practices, they rely on API access keys for dynamic connection to other applications and resources. Sometimes referred to as “API keys,” these powerful credentials are used to authenticate applications and DevOps automation tools and enable programmatic requests to the cloud environment. API keys can be used for virtually anything, from provisioning a container to copying a database to allowing one service to access data from another. Attackers have used API access keys — stolen from phished endpoints or inadvertently posted to public code repositories and other sources — to steal customer data and valuable intellectual property, or destructively delete source code.

Many of the DevOps tools used to orchestrate development and delivery of custom-built cloud applications are also highly privileged. For example, CI/CD tools for configuration management, such as Ansible, and those used to run automated tests and builds, like Jenkins. Since these “tier 0” tools enable full control of the environment, admin access must tightly controlled and restricted to reduce exposure.

Here are six steps for securing privileged access to custom-built cloud applications and in the DevOps pipeline where they’re created and deployed:

1. Remove all embedded API keys and secrets from source code, scripts and automation tools. DevOps culture emphasizes collaboration and code sharing. It’s common practice to post application code to GitHub and other public repositories. Yet too often, this code contains embedded API keys and other credentials and secrets, and attackers troll these repositories to locate and abuse them. Stay a step ahead by removing hard-coded credentials completely. Similarly, never provide human users with direct access to API keys.

2. Proactively secure all API keys and secrets in a secure digital vault that supports strong privileged access controls. Only allow access to authorized, verified users and applications under centralized, corporate-wide access policies.

3. Enforce least privilege access controls for all DevOps tools, including admin consoles as well as highly privileged human users. Follow strong privileged access management best practices, such as rotating privileged credentials and monitoring and recording privileged access activity for human and automated users.

4. Apply consistent, enterprise-wide security policies to the tools and admin consoles used at each specific stage of the DevOps pipeline: plan, code, build, test, release, deploy, operate, monitor.

5. Leverage single sign-on (SSO) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) to solve pervasive password challenges and strengthen Identity Security when granting DevOps access to any highly privileged human user.

6. Perform regular audits to identify gaps and privilege-related risk and to continuously improve overall security posture.

Consistency Is Key
The most effective cybersecurity programs enforce identity and privileged access policies consistently across their entire organization — regardless of infrastructure, application mix or development philosophy. This must be done at scale to keep pace as the organization and its cloud workloads evolve to support digital transformation and flexible work models. This can only be achieved from a centralized point of control that enables consistent management of privileged credentials, human and non-human identities, devices and secrets across multi-cloud and hybrid environments.
