1. Introduction

With the rise of DevOps, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines have become the backbone of modern software development. At the heart of these pipelines are containers—lightweight, portable units that package software and its dependencies together.

However, as the speed of deployment increases, so does the attack surface. Containers, by design, are ephemeral and scalable, but they also introduce unique security challenges. Manual security measures can no longer keep up. This is where automated container security becomes essential.

This guide is a complete blueprint for DevOps teams looking to automate container security across their CI/CD pipelines.

2. Why Container Security Matters in CI/CD

Containers are used to build, test, and deploy applications at scale. While containers offer speed and portability, they also:

Share OS kernels, increasing risk from kernel exploits.

Often use images from public registries, which can be compromised.

Are dynamic and short-lived, making manual security nearly impossible.

Integrate deeply with CI/CD tools, risking widespread damage if compromised.

In a CI/CD environment, a single insecure container can lead to:

Supply chain attacks (compromised base images)

Credential leaks

Unauthorized access to production

Compliance violations

Therefore, securing containers—and automating this security—is no longer optional. It’s a necessity.

3. Common Security Risks in Containers and CI/CD

a. Insecure Images

Images pulled from public repositories may contain known vulnerabilities, malware, or misconfigurations.

b. Secrets in Containers

Hardcoded credentials, API keys, and tokens inside container images pose a significant risk if exposed.

c. Inadequate Isolation

Containers share the host kernel. If improperly configured, one container can escape and affect others.

d. Outdated Base Images

Using outdated images increases the chance of having unpatched CVEs in the container stack.

e. Unvalidated Inputs and Dependencies

Uncontrolled or unscanned libraries may introduce malicious code during build.

f. Weak CI/CD Pipeline Security

Unprotected Jenkins agents, GitHub Actions runners, or GitLab CI configurations are vulnerable to attacks.

4. Key Principles for Securing CI/CD Pipelines

Shift Left Security
Integrate security early in the development lifecycle—from code commit to image build.

Zero Trust Architecture
Assume no service or image is inherently trustworthy.

Policy-as-Code
Define security policies programmatically using tools like OPA (Open Policy Agent).

Immutable Infrastructure
Avoid mutable containers. Rebuild and redeploy instead of patching in place.

Security Observability
Make security events visible to teams using logging and alerting tools.

5. Automation Strategies for Container Security

Here are key areas where DevOps teams should automate container security:

a. Automated Image Scanning

Use scanners like Trivy, Grype, or Anchore to:

Detect known vulnerabilities (CVEs).

Identify outdated packages.

Check for embedded secrets.

Integrate scanners in:

Pre-commit hooks

CI build pipelines

Container registries

b. CI/CD Pipeline Security Gates

Enforce security policies at each stage:

Fail builds with critical CVEs.

Block deployments from unauthorized registries.

Allow only signed images.

c. Secrets Management

Use tools like HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, or Kubernetes Secrets to:

Inject secrets dynamically.

Rotate credentials automatically.

Avoid hardcoding sensitive data.

d. Runtime Threat Detection

Monitor containers post-deployment using tools like:

Falco (open-source runtime security)

Sysdig

Aqua Security

These tools detect suspicious activities like file modifications, reverse shells, or process anomalies.

e. Compliance Automation

Use tools like OpenSCAP, Kube-bench, or Checkov to:

Enforce CIS benchmarks.

Validate compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI-DSS.

Automate audit trails.

6. Tools and Technologies to Automate Container Security

Purpose

Tool

Description

Vulnerability Scanning

Trivy, Grype, Snyk

Scans container images for CVEs.

Secrets Detection

GitLeaks, Detect-Secrets

Detects secrets in code and images.

Policy Enforcement

OPA/Gatekeeper, Kyverno

Enforce custom security policies in CI/CD and Kubernetes.

Secrets Management

Vault, AWS Secrets Manager

Securely store and inject secrets.

Image Signing

Cosign, Notary

Verifies the origin and integrity of images.

Runtime Security

Falco, Aqua, Sysdig

Real-time detection and response for container anomalies.

Compliance & Benchmarking

Kube-bench, OpenSCAP

Validates infrastructure compliance.

7. Best Practices for DevOps Teams

✅ 1. Use Minimal Base Images

Prefer distroless or Alpine-based images to reduce the attack surface.

✅ 2. Implement Image Provenance

Sign images with tools like Cosign and verify them in CI/CD before deployment.

✅ 3. Restrict Network Access

Define strict network policies (via Calico, Cilium) to prevent lateral movement.

✅ 4. Enable Namespace Isolation

Separate build, test, and production environments using Kubernetes namespaces or separate clusters.

✅ 5. Limit Container Privileges

Avoid running containers as root. Use capabilities and securityContext settings in Kubernetes.

✅ 6. Audit Everything

Enable audit logging for container runtime, CI/CD actions, and registry access.

8. Real-World Use Case: Securing CI/CD for a FinTech Startup

Problem:
A FinTech startup built their app on Kubernetes using GitHub Actions. They used public base images and embedded secrets in CI scripts.

Risks Identified:

Images contained critical CVEs.

Credentials to payment gateways were exposed in logs.

Production containers ran with elevated privileges.

Automated Solutions Implemented:

Trivy scans integrated into GitHub Actions.

Secrets managed using HashiCorp Vault and injected via environment variables.

Cosign used for image signing and verification.

Falco deployed for real-time runtime anomaly detection.

OPA policies enforced no privileged containers.

Outcome:

Reduced vulnerabilities by 80% in three months.

Passed PCI-DSS compliance audit.

Incident response time dropped from 3 hours to 15 minutes.

9. Final Thoughts

Containerization is revolutionizing software development—but without security, it’s a double-edged sword. Manual processes can’t keep up with the scale and speed of modern CI/CD. Automating container security is the only way to ensure continuous delivery doesn’t become continuous risk.

DevOps teams must embrace security as code, automate relentlessly, and adopt tools that make security part of the development culture—not a bottleneck.

💡 Security is not a phase. It’s a mindset baked into every layer of your CI/CD pipeline.

Introduction to DevOps: A Modern Approach to Software Development

DevOps is a set of practices, tools, and cultural philosophies that aim to improve collaboration and productivity between software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) teams. The goal of DevOps is to shorten the development lifecycle and provide continuous delivery with high software quality. By emphasizing automation, collaboration, and monitoring, DevOps ensures that applications can be developed, tested, and deployed faster, more reliably, and with greater stability.

DevOps integrates the development and operations processes, creating a more efficient workflow that accelerates innovation while minimizing downtime and issues. This post will break down how DevOps works, explore its major features, and explain how it drives improvements across the entire software development lifecycle.

How DevOps Works: The Key Principles

DevOps works by fostering collaboration between development and operations teams, automating manual tasks, and ensuring continuous integration and delivery. These key principles are designed to increase speed and quality while reducing the risks and inefficiencies associated with traditional development processes.

Key Principles of How DevOps Works:

Collaboration Between Teams: DevOps breaks down the silos between development, operations, quality assurance (QA), and security teams, promoting communication and shared responsibility throughout the development and deployment process.

Automation: DevOps emphasizes the automation of repetitive tasks, such as code integration, testing, and deployment. This reduces manual errors, speeds up the development process, and ensures consistent results across environments.

What is DevOps?

DevOps approach combines the skillsets of developers and IT operation engineers across software development and IT operations.
The following principles are important for a DevOps approach:

Create Autonomous, Cross Functional Teams.

Continuous Learn.

Automate Everything.

Foster Collaboration.

Customer Centric.

Continuous Improvement.

End-to-End Ownership

DevOps Tools:

A DevOps pipeline engineer needs to have a vast knowledge of tooling at all stages of the pipeline. The following diagram shows many of the tools available at various stages of the pipeline:

What is SRE?

In general, an SRE team is responsible for the availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning of their service(s).
SRE is fundamentally doing work that has historically been done by an operations team, but using engineers with software expertise, and banking on the fact that these engineers are inherently both predisposed to, and have the ability to, design and implement automation with software to replace human labor.

DevSecOps:

In DevSecOps, the developer must involve themselves with operation and security teams in the early stages of design and development processes to facilitate secure applications.

DevOps Vs SRE Vs DevSecOps:

DevOps and DevSecOps follow a blameless culture approach where every mistake is a learning opportunity. Instead of making the system fault-proof, DevOps culture focuses on a fault-tolerant approach. DevOps and DevSecOps basically deal with the pre-failure situation.

On the other hand, SRE methodology practices a blameless postmortem approach wherein every time failure occurs, the blameless postmortem approach identifies what caused the fault and finds ways to avoid it in the future. SRE basically deals with the post-failure situation.

As IT is a vast and growing sector, it always demands skillful professionals with some certifications on their related tools […]

As IT is a vast and growing sector, it always demands skillful professionals with some certifications on their related tools or working courses that give a great advantage to both organizations and professionals. A Certification can give you more skills that can boost your resume and career as well that can offer you more lucrative salaries and opportunities. Certifications have always been playing a key role to increase the value of your skills and getting an advantage in getting a job in your particular desired domain.

Some IT certifications.

Master in DevOps engineering – As DevOps has beaten all the traditional SDLC processes, it has become a more demanding and favorite process.

It has been seen DevOps is growing market day by day and it will be continued in upcoming years as well. This master certification is really important as it offers to learn all the open-source major toolsets which can boost your knowledge as well as career.

So do check this certification as it is still in demand and is continuously growing and offers a good salary package.

Site reliability engineering (SRE) – SRE is founded byGoogle Company and also works the same as DevOps, but the only difference is the main focus of SRE is to enhance the reliability and better performance of applications, with automation and continuous integration and delivery.

SRE has also earned its value in the market and come in demand. It has also toolsets like DevOps to automate their work. You can learn everything during the certification of SRE. As per the 2021 report, 22% of organizations have adopted SRE, and it is expecting more growth in 2022.

DevSecOps – The main focus of DevSecOps is security but it stands for all development, security, and operations.

It believes security is everyone’s priority. Everyone should work by keeping security in mind, so the security level won’t compromise.

DevSecOps certifications are essential as the security of software is very important.

This certification will teach you the way to keep the security in all the parts of work and how security matters when it comes to deployment in the market.

It takes the responsibility to save the software from all the loopholes and people like hackers as much as possible. It also has its toolsets to automate the work and to remove manual errors. It is also achieving very nice growth and it will be continued in 2022 as well.

Docker and Kubernetes – Docker and kubKubernetesth are essential to each other as Docker is a container and Kubernetes is the management tool of those containers. That’s why both certificates are necessary if you thinking to do one. Some company uses Docker Swarm instead of Kubernetes. Both works are the same but the thing is most of the companies prefer Kubernetes, so go with this. Kubernetes is vaster than Docker Swarm. As both had images in the market it is certain both the tools will keep continuing their growth in the market and also both are important to the DevOps process, so yes it comes under important IT certification of 2022.

Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations (AIOPS) –

AIOPS is the application of AI, machine learning, natural language processing, etc to traditional IT Ops activities and tasks. AIOps combine big data and machine learning to automate IT operations processes, which comprises event correlation, anomaly detection, and causality determination.

It is hard to manage today’s dynamic and constantly changing IT environments with yesterday’s tools. Microservices and containerization make it necessary to modernize. The evolution of IT infrastructure is a must. So the certification of AIOPS is also important because AIOPS is in trend and we can see this in 2022 as well.

Gitops –

GitOps is a method to manage infrastructure and application configurations using Git. GitOps is built around the developer experience and help teams in managing infrastructure using the same tools and processes they use for software development.

Gitops certification enables you to leverage so many benefits like:-

Enhance developer productivity

An enhanced version experience for DevOps teams

Reduce failed deployments

Recover from outages quickly

Mlops –

MLOps certification is a set of practices that intends to deploy and maintain machine learning models in production.

MLOps allow the continuous delivery of high-quality ML applications into production at scale.

MLOps is the communication between data scientists and the operations team. It is deeply collaborative and designed to eliminate waste, automate as much as possible, and produce more richer and consistent insights through machine learning. Machine learning is a game-changer for business as its environment is changing from manual to automation.

MLOps have all the capabilities that are required from data science, product teams, and IT to deploy, operate, govern, and secure models in production. It comprises the following components that enable an automated ML pipeline as well that maximizes your ML performance and ROI:

Artificial intelligence is a program that is designed to work like human brains such as thinking, learning, making decisions on their own.

Artificial intelligence has been introduced in 1956 at a conference by John McCarthy and this is the first person who thought about artificial intelligence. That’s why we call him the father of AI.

As per the report, it will be approx 58 million job roles in the AI sector in 2022. So AI is present as well as future because we are already using AI technologies like Alexa, Siri on iPhone, etc.

DataOps is designed to solve problems organizations challenges associated with inefficiencies in accessing, integrating, and making data available. It is an orchestration of people, processes, technology to deliver high-quality data to his data citizens fast. DataOps is focused on collaboration to deliver agility, speed, and new data initiatives at scale.

DataOps has 3 objectives –

Know your data

Trust your data

Use your data

This course is part of the Data Engineering Specialization which provides learners with the specialized skills required to be a Data Engineer. It has been estimated millions of jobs will be discovered in 2022 for this role as it is in demand. So its certification is going to play an important role for the complete knowledge and to get a job at good organizations.

Machine learning – Machine learning is a kind of intelligence of system to learn things without taking human help. It is an important part of artificial intelligence to use as a brain that uses data and algorithms to learn new things as well as take decisions.

The Machine Learning certification will help you to master the skills required to become an expert in this domain. Master skills such as Python, ML algorithms, statistics, supervised and unsupervised learning, etc. to become a successful professional in this popular technology.

As the market is changing it has been seen vast growth in this field. In 2022 as well as in the rest of the upcoming years a machine learning will dominate the market.

Definitions:

DevOps – DevOps is the change in culture and practices of the SDLC process which enable the organization to produce high-quality software and continuously deliver the software. It has been originated from two words, Dev and Ops. DevOps has some phases through which it works. DevOps is the collaboration between development and operation teams to ensure continuous integration, development, test, deployment, and monitor. After DevOps came the development and operation team is no longer working as ‘siloed’. DevOps is much better and faster than any other traditional model in the current era because it has removed the vulnerabilities between culture ad practices which was stopping other organizations to keep up with the time which was demanding a faster and reliable process.

DevSecOps – DevSecOps is for development, security, and operations. Its main motto is to make every employee working under a project consider security policies also important like other works, so the product will be saved. DevSecOps is all about security measures from the development phase to the monitor phase. Organizations can implement DevSecOps to break down silos between development, security, and operations so they can maintain the proper security over their products. DevSecOps uses some security testing tools to integrate into their CI/CD process like –
⦁ Static application security testing (SAST)
⦁ Software composition analysis (SCA)
⦁ Interactive application security testing (IAST)
⦁ Dynamic application security testing (DAST)

SRE – SRE has been originated from google company. SRE’s main aim is to solve the operational problems right from testing to monitoring software when it is deployed in the market. The main focus of creating it was to remove the vulnerabilities of operation parts to make the product effective and reliable. It removed the ‘silos’ from all departments and made the operation teams work together to produce an efficient product, e.g – Somewhere you might have experienced you have never felt any downtime (the app is not working properly) on your Google apps even when Google teams are pushing updates over that particular app. This is like the SRE team works making your apps more trustworthy without making you feel any disturbance. SRE works with the collaboration of software engineers. SRE somewhere automates Its operation tasks and accelerate software delivery with minimizing risks.

Source:-https://devops.com/

Dynatrace has added a security module to its observability platform that leverages its Davis artificial intelligence (AI) engine to automatically identify the software libraries and open source packages that represent the greatest security risk.

Ajay Gandhi, vice president of product marketing for Dynatrace, said the Davis Security Advisor, made available as part of the Dynatrace Application Security Module, makes it easier for IT teams understand which vulnerabilities need to be remediated first.

Davis Security Advisor aggregates vulnerability data in real-time and prioritizes remediation based on number of vulnerabilities, severity, impact to sensitive data, public exposure, how widely known the vulnerability is, and whether the code impacted is facing the Internet. That approach enables Davis Security Advisor to monitor all software libraries used in preproduction and production environments in a way that sharply reduces the number of false positives that would otherwise be generated, noted Gandhi.

As application environments become more complex—in part due to increased adoption of microservices that have lots of dependencies—it’s become impossible for IT teams to implement DevSecOps best practices in workflows without some form of AI augmentation, added Gandhi.

In fact, a recent Dynatrace survey found 89% of chief information security officer (CISOs) noted cloud-native architectures and container runtime environments, used primarily to construct microservices, have made it more difficult to detect and manage software vulnerabilities.

In theory, application developers are taking more responsibility for remediating security vulnerabilities within their applications. The challenge is they often inadvertently use an older version of a library that has known vulnerabilities. Hopefully, that issue gets addressed before an application gets deployed. There are, however, plenty of cases where, for one reason or another, a library with known vulnerabilities gets deployed anyway.

Making matter more challenging, many vulnerabilities are discovered after an application has been deployed. Developers don’t always have access to a software bill of materials that would make it easier to determine what libraries have been employed in what application or, for that matter, which libraries are dependent upon one another.

Gandhi said the Davis Security Advisor resolves that issue by employing machine learning algorithms, trained by Dynatrace, to identify those potential security issues. Once identified, the updates that need to be made can then be slipstreamed into a DevOps workflow.

Analyzing code for vulnerabilities is, of course, not a new idea. Training an AI model to perform that task on behalf of DevOps teams does promise to greatly accelerate the process at a time when organizations are under more pressure than ever to secure their software supply chains in the wake of a series of high-profile breaches.

It’s just not clear yet who inside organizations might drive adoption for AI platforms capable of identifying vulnerabilities in a way that helps prioritize remediation efforts. In some cases, cybersecurity teams have a vested interest in reducing the number of potential security incidents.

The one thing that is apparent is shipping insecure code faster only leads to more negative outcomes. There may not be such a thing as a ‘great’ application that happens to be insecure. Instead, the assumption will be that any application with known vulnerabilities, no matter how great, are too flawed to be deployed given all the security risks most businesses currently face.

Source:-https://devops.com/ GitLab today took the wraps off a major update to its continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform that embeds analytics […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

GitLab today took the wraps off a major update to its continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform that embeds analytics tools in workflows to identify the root cause of inefficiencies, among other additional capabilities.

David DeSanto, senior director for product management at GitLab, said that capability is part of an ongoing effort to include value stream analytics within the core GitLab 14 platform as an alternative to acquiring and deploying a separate platform. There are also additional charts and dashboards that enable DevOps teams to uncover bottlenecks over time.

In addition, GitLab announced it is extending the security capabilities of the platform by adding integrations with open source Semgrep and Trivy vulnerability scanning tools as part of an effort to enable organizations to embrace DevSecOps best practices within workflows. GitLab has also added support for the fuzz testing tool it gained via the acquisitions of Fuzzit and Peach Tech to enable DevOps teams to test application security more thoroughly along with making available additional dashboards to track security metrics.

As part of an effort to enable organizations to better secure their software supply chains, GitLab has also added support for immutable pipeline definitions that can’t be altered without specific levels of permissions being granted. That capability also enables DevOps teams to more easily achieve compliance with any number of regulatory frameworks, noted DeSanto.

The company is also adding a pipeline editor that provides access to a visual tool for creating, managing and visualizing pipelines. That tool is designed to both make DevOps more accessible to novices and provide experienced DevOps teams with an alternative tool for managing pipelines in a way that doesn’t require them to write additional code.

Finally, as part of its comprehensive approach to DevOps, GitLab is also making available agent software for Kubernetes clusters to eliminate the need for organizations to acquire a separate DevOps platform to build and deploy cloud-native applications based on microservices constructed using containers. The company now provides IT organizations with the option of crafting a GitOps workflow for Kubernetes using either an agentless or agent-based approach.

Gitlab is betting that, as DevOps continues to evolve and mature, more organizations will prefer to replace the various tools they need to integrate themselves with a platform that lowers the total cost of DevOps. Gartner is forecasting that, by 2023, 40% of organizations will have switched from multiple point solutions to a DevOps value stream delivery platform to streamline application delivery, versus less than 10% using such a platform in 2020. Today, only 10% of organizations are employing such a platform, according to Gartner.

There should also be many more organizations employing DevOps workflows to build applications. Organizations of all sizes now realize how dependent they are on software to drive a wide range of digital business transformation initiatives. The rate at which that software can now be securely developed and updated, in many cases, goes to the heart of their ability to compete. The issue is finding a way to achieve that goal without constructing a platform that ultimately takes time and resources away from building secure software.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/

PLEASANTON, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Accurics, the cloud cyber resilience specialist, today announced a technology partnership with GitLab, a single application for the DevOps lifecycle, as well as the general availability of its integration with GitLab’s Static Application Security Testing (SAST) solution. Accurics leverages the integration with GitLab to provide DevSecOps teams with a holistic, contextualized view of application and infrastructure risks. Organizations can now establish and programmatically enforce consistent risk management policies throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) while minimizing the effort and expense of manual triage and investigation.

Cloud infrastructure and applications are traditionally deployed from two separate pipelines, which dissociates application security vulnerabilities from Infrastructure as Code (IaC) misconfigurations. As a result, developers are often left with a long list of vulnerabilities and misconfigurations to fix without the context required to prioritize remediation of those vulnerabilities and misconfigurations that could actually be exploited.

“The most effective innovation is often incremental – for example, new capabilities and additional functionality accompanied by relevant security advances,” said Om Moolchandani, Co-founder, CTO & CISO at Accurics. “In this environment, we see diverse and largely unconnected vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, collectively producing a level of noise that makes identifying the most serious risks vital but difficult. The partnership with GitLab serves to add greater context to every layer of code and strengthens the security risk posture throughout the extended development lifecycle.”

The integration with GitLab helps Accurics users overcome these challenges by correlating IaC, cloud, and SAST vulnerabilities to help mitigate risk throughout the SDLC and generate a threat score. This threat score can be used by policy guardrails established with Policy as Code, blocking the riskiest builds from being deployed into production while providing insight into less risky problems that don’t warrant breaking the build. As a result, developers are able to focus resources on remediating the most immediate threats first.

“The growing adoption of GitOps practices and Infrastructure as Code necessitates scalable risk management tools,” said Nima Badiey, Vice President, Global Alliances at GitLab. “The integration between GitLab and Accurics will help customers to programmatically define infrastructure and risk management policies more effectively throughout the software development lifecycle.”

At Accurics™, we envision a world where organizations can innovate in the cloud with confidence. Our mission is to enable organizations to achieve cloud cyber resilience with developer-first security that self-heals the cloud. The Accurics platform programmatically detects infrastructure misconfigurations and contextualizes the findings with application risks to identify breach paths throughout the development lifecycle. It automatically generates code to remediate issues and applies the fix in the development pipeline. Accurics enables organizations of all sizes to achieve developer-driven cloud cyber resilience through cloud-based and open source tools such as Terrascan

Source:-https://devops.com/ Today’s blend of third-party application dependencies and polyglot software development often makes assessing risk difficult. With many new cloud-native […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

Today’s blend of third-party application dependencies and polyglot software development often makes assessing risk difficult. With many new cloud-native deployment models, it can be tricky to discover potential vulnerabilities. These threats take the form of insecure default settings in Kubernetes, over-permissive states, CVEs that threaten container integrity, and other vulnerable conditions.

Plugging gaps throughout the cloud-native strata is now crucial to avoid exposing data and breaking privacy regulations. Yet, gaining visibility into these holdings is challenging, and traditional application security practices may not cut it within a cloud-native context.

A new 2021 CISO Report released by Dynatrace, “Precise, automatic risk and impact assessment is key for DevSecOps,” demonstrates increased false positives and a general lack of real-time container runtime vulnerability scanning among enterprise IT departments worldwide. Of the 700 CISOs surveyed, most report that microservices, containers and Kubernetes have caused security blind spots across their organizations.

Below, we’ll cover the major takeaways from the study to see why new cloud-native development models are leaving security gaps. We’ll consider how CISOs can increase security throughout the cloud-native IT stack while still reaping the rewards of container-based delivery models.

Cloud-Native Security Blindspots
Adopting new container-based technologies may introduce multiple nuanced security implications. Of the tech leaders surveyed, 89% report that microservices, containers and Kubernetes have created new vulnerabilities within their organizations.

Engineers are shipping code to maintain release velocity and to meet the demand for digital innovation. In the process, 28% of CISOs say application teams sometimes bypass vulnerability scans to speed up software delivery. Due to these realities, it’s no surprise that 71% of CISOs admit they are not fully confident code is free of vulnerabilities before going live in production.

As some teams bypass security pre-production, it follows that more aren’t applying holistic security scanning during production. As a result, nearly all organizations (97%) lack real-time visibility into runtime vulnerabilities, found the report.

Adding to the number of cloud-native blindspots is information overload. The report calculated that, on average, an organization receives a staggering 2,169 new alerts of potential application security vulnerabilities each month. Out of this high volume of alerts, 77% of CISOs say they are mostly false positives and not actual exposures.

Due to minimal testing and a high number of false positives, organizations are likely to leave many vulnerabilities unpatched. To make matters worse, developers, pressed for time, may lack the bandwidth to resolve known issues.

Faster Delivery, Harder Detection
Much of the setbacks in vulnerability detection may lie in a general shift toward new ways of working and faster delivery cycles. For example, 63% of CISOs reported that DevOps and agile methodologies are making it harder to detect and manage vulnerabilities.

In addition, 74% of CISOs say traditional security controls such as vulnerability scanners no longer fit today’s cloud-native world, and 77% of CISOs agree that automation could help. This could involve replacing manual deployment, configuration and management with more automated approaches. Others agree that security-as-code is required to ensure high container security best practices.

Another result of more frequent delivery is increased over-reporting. Of the total security vulnerability alerts received per month, CISOs report that only 42% of these alerts require action. More rapid release cycles could thus exacerbate already crowded vulnerability detection systems.

Who Owns Vulnerability Management?
Only 3% of organizations have real-time visibility into runtime vulnerabilities in containerized production environments, the study found. In reality, vulnerability scanning in production is only happening once a month or less within 68% of organizations.

To compensate for this gap, most CISOs believe the onus is not on the security team but the application and DevOps teams to manage and respond to vulnerabilities—85% of CISOs believe these groups should hold responsibility for vulnerability management. These findings come to light as other stakeholders advocate for increased full-cycle developer control and encourage the DevOps mindset across roles.

Handing more control to developers sounds good, yet, 64% of respondents say developers don’t always have time to resolve vulnerabilities before code goes into production. As a result, over one-quarter of application teams bypass vulnerability scanning entirely. Often, engineering teams may not frequently sync with security groups, and DevSecOps principles are not yet pervasive throughout all organizations.

The report also highlighted the fact that existing security tools are often ineffective; 69% of CISOs say security tools slow down DevOps because they only focus on one state of the software delivery cycle.

Cloud Use Requires Security Repositioning
As cloud architectures rise in prominence, organizations are adopting cloud-native tools like microservices, containers and Kubernetes. There is also the chance of multi-tool conditions further complicating the vulnerability scanning process. With more systems to protect than ever before, teams may have to reposition their approach to vulnerability detection.

“The increased use of cloud-native architectures has fundamentally broken traditional approaches to application security,” said Bernd Greifeneder, founder and chief technology officer at Dynatrace. “This research confirms what we’ve long anticipated: manual vulnerability scans and impact assessments are no longer able to keep up with the pace of change in today’s dynamic cloud environments and rapid innovation cycles.”

The Global CISO report, “Precise, automatic risk and impact assessment is key for DevSecOps,” from Dynatrace, queried 700 chief information security officers (CISOs) on their monitoring practices concerning vulnerabilities. To review the report’s full findings,

Source:-https://devops.com/ Accurics today announced it has integrated its tool for discovering violations of security policies that occur when developers provision […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

Accurics today announced it has integrated its tool for discovering violations of security policies that occur when developers provision infrastructure as code with both the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform and the static application security assessment testing (SAST) tools from GitLab.

Om Moolchandani, chief information and security officer (CISO) and CTO for Accurics, said both integrations make it easier for developers to discover security issues earlier as part of a DevSecOps workflow using the company’s Terrascan tools.

Many of the issues organizations are having with cloud security these days can be traced back to misconfigurations created by developers when configuring infrastructure using tools such as Terraform. Accurics created Terrascan to identify those misconfigurations.

The integration with GitLab makes it easier to incorporate Terrascan into a DevOps workflow in a way that also aggregates data collected from both SAST and dynamic application security testing (DAST) tools, said Moolchandani. That approach effectively unifies what today are two separate cloud infrastructure and application development pipelines by enabling DevOps teams to employ threat scores to enforce security policies as code that are deemed too risky to deploy with block builds, he added.

At the same time, the integration with SAST and DAST tools provides the context developers need to prioritize remediation efforts before applications are deployed in a production environment, noted Moolchandani.

Organizations of all sizes are now trying to strike a balance between two conflicting agendas. On the one hand, infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools such as Terraform have played a critical role in enabling developers to build and deploy applications faster. The issue is that developers lack the security expertise required to ensure infrastructure is secured properly at a time when cybercriminals are more aggressively seeking to compromise software supply chains. Organizations most likely won’t slow down the rate at which applications are being deployed to make sure software supply chains are not compromised. However, in the absence of best DevSecOps practices—which still are not widely implemented—there may be a backlash against shifting application responsibility left toward developers.

The challenge that creates is most organizations don’t have enough security expertise available to review applications in a timely manner before they are deployed, which results in them hoping security issues will be discovered and remediated during the application update cycle before cybercriminals find a way to exploit a vulnerability.

Of course, hope does not make for an application security strategy. Organizations will need to find ways to enable developers to better secure applications while simultaneously making it easier for cybersecurity teams to maintain a zero-trust IT environment that reduces the chances organizations will be breached via, for example, a phishing attack to steal developer credentials.

Regardless of how DevSecOps workflows and zero-trust IT architectures are implemented, it’s clear organizations have run out of time to resolve longstanding security issues that are now making the kinds of headlines no one wants to see.

Source:-https://devops.com/ Incentives are mismatched among SREs, SecOps, and application developers. These mismatches create challenges around how and what information is […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

Incentives are mismatched among SREs, SecOps, and application developers. These mismatches create challenges around how and what information is shared across siloed teams. This asymmetrical information creates a moral hazard where one team can shift deployment risk to another team, with no accountability back to the originating team. Risk shifting results in unstable applications, inefficient infrastructure, security issues and poor customer experience. All of that impacts your company’s bottom line.

Closing the Information Gap
Observability is positioned as a way to fix the information gap between these disparate groups. Observable systems allow users to ask questions about their behavior in an open-ended way, unlike more rigid monitoring systems. SREs and SecOps teams are already reaping benefits from observability, but mismatched incentives limit its effectiveness. Meeting the observability expectations of IT leaders requires pervasive instrumentation across applications, infrastructure and third-party software. Delivering that level of instrumentation has remained out of reach due to incentive mismatches, as well as human and infrastructure costs.

The main incentive for developers is shipping code quickly at a reasonable level of quality, meaning a low bug count. This contrasts with SREs, who are incentivized around uptime, performance and efficiency, while the incentives for SecOps teams are around risk reduction and breach mitigation.

Since SREs and SecOps teams don’t have insight into what developers have changed, it’s easy for performance or security problems to get thrown over the fence to operations. A fresh code push might only include minor changes and be harmless to existing operations. Or, it could replace large chunks of logic across the entire codebase, including adding calls to external and third-party applications. To the intrepid SRE and SecOps teams, one change looks like any other. They don’t get a peek behind the curtain because of the mismatched incentives. DevOps wants to deploy quickly. Waiting on approval from other teams slows down deployments, so comprehensive reviews don’t happen. This doesn’t mean DevOps teams are intentionally trying to sabotage partner teams. They’re simply acting in their own interests based on their incentives.

The challenge is that one party, the developers, has more information than other parties. That information asymmetry is what creates unbalanced risk sharing. Coping with information asymmetry has led to all kinds of new collaborative models, starting with DevOps and evolving into DevSecOps and other permutations like Biz DevSecOps.

True collaboration has been hard to come by. Early DevOps efforts are often successful, but scaling beyond five to seven teams is difficult because teams lack the breadth of experience in IT operations or the SRE capacity to staff multiple product teams. The change velocity DevOps teams can achieve is often far greater than SREs and SecOps can absorb, making information asymmetry worse.

If teams can’t maintain high levels of collaboration and communication, another option must be developed. Observability practices, like collecting all events, metrics, traces and logs, allow SREs and SecOps teams to interrogate applications about their behavior without knowing which questions they want to ask ahead of time. However, observability only works if applications, and the infrastructure they rely on, are instrumented. This creates another problem: who does the instrumentation?

The expectation is DevOps teams embed instrumentation into their code as part of the development process. While that’s a nice idea, there are four reasons this falls short. First, the quality of instrumentation varies. Many log statements are terse and only understandable by the developer that wrote them. The message “In function xyx123!” isn’t helpful to an SRE digging into a performance problem that cropped up in the latest release.

Second, instrumentation libraries vary by implementation, giving inconsistent results across language bindings. Open Telemetry is trying to improve this, but its progress is slow and still requires developers to do more work that, if we’re honest, doesn’t benefit them; it benefits SREs and SecOps. Now we’re back to those pesky mismatched incentives and information asymmetry problems again.

The third problem with instrumentation is the volume of data. Each instrumented application can produce terabytes of data each day. When you have robust instrumentation, the amount of data can be overwhelming, and extremely costly to analyze and store.

Lastly, instrumentation is isolated to the code your team wrote. That represents a fraction of the code you rely on. Vendor-provided services and APIs remain a black box, limiting your observability into those components.

Resolving information asymmetry across teams requires two things:

Pervasive, pluggable instrumentation capabilities for all code that doesn’t require developer involvement, and
An observability pipeline to filter, redact and enrich data, then route it to your analytics platform of choice.
Pervasive Instrumentation
Operations teams need instrumentation without having to go back to developers and beg them to add it to existing code. They need to turn it on and off as needed, and they need readily consumable data. They also need every piece of data they can get, including packet payloads, insight into encrypted data and so on. This goes well beyond what’s possible with today’s instrumentation options.

AppScope, a newly released open source project, is a new take on instrumentation. AppScope interposes itself between application threads and system libraries, tracking things like file system access, network and HTTP activity, as well as CPU and process activity. It also provides payload data, and because it sits between the application and encryption libraries, it also gives access to users’ cleartext data. Because it works with any Linux binary, SREs and operations teams can instrument anything, even code they didn’t write.

Observability Pipeline
The challenge with pervasive instrumentation is dealing with all the data generated by applications. Network, file system, and other system data can easily swamp destination APM and log analytics platforms, driving up licensing and infrastructure costs. While instrumentation data is vital to rebalancing risk sharing in organizations, you need a way to manage that data intelligently to get value out of it. This is where the observability pipeline comes in.

An observability pipeline sits between the sources of observability data and its target destinations. By acting as a strategic control point, the pipeline gives users control over how data is formatted, filtered, enriched, and redacted before it is routed to one or more destinations.

Observability pipelines help SREs and operations teams deal with the flood of instrumentation data by routing low value data to low-cost storage, like S3, while higher value information lands in APM and log analytics tools. Later, if you decide you need the data stored in S3 to add more context to your analysis, you can replay it back through the pipeline and enrich your data set.

Shifting business priorities are accelerating the pace of technology deployment across organizations, and teams are pressured to deliver faster. This faster pace of delivery pushes deployment risk to operations and security teams that lack visibility into changes developers have made across complex distributed systems. This information asymmetry also increases risk to the business as applications become less predictable and reliable over time.

Traditional methods of resolving the information mismatch haven’t worked because incentives across teams aren’t aligned. Adopting pervasive instrumentation and observability practices will give SREs and operations teams critical visibility into rapidly changing application and infrastructure environments, without disrupting the developer experience and process.
