What are Transactions?

In the context of computing and database management systems (DBMS), a transaction refers to a logical unit of work that contains a series of operations, such as data retrieval, modification, or processing, that must be executed as a single unit. The main objective of a transaction is to ensure data consistency, integrity, and reliability in a multi-user environment.

A transaction typically involves four key properties, often referred to as the ACID properties:

Atomicity: Ensures that all operations within a transaction are completed successfully; if one operation fails, the entire transaction is rolled back, and no partial data changes are made.

Consistency: Guarantees that a transaction will bring the database from one valid state to another, maintaining all rules, constraints, and triggers.

Isolation: Ensures that transactions are executed independently, without interference from other concurrent transactions, maintaining data integrity.

Durability: Once a transaction is committed, the changes are permanent, even if there is a system failure afterward.

A transaction is typically started with a
BEGIN
statement, followed by a series of operations, and concluded with either a
COMMIT
(to make changes permanent) or
ROLLBACK
(to undo the changes).

Example:

A banking transaction to transfer money from one account to another would be a typical example where atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability must be ensured.

BEGIN TRANSACTION;

UPDATE account SET balance = balance - 100 WHERE account_id = 1;
UPDATE account SET balance = balance + 100 WHERE account_id = 2;

COMMIT;

In this example, if either of the operations fails, the transaction will be rolled back to ensure no money is lost or incorrectly transferred.

What Are the Major Use Cases of Transactions?

Transactions are fundamental to systems that require data consistency and integrity. Here are some of the major use cases:

1. Banking and Financial Systems:

Use Case: Transactions are extensively used in banking applications to ensure the correctness and consistency of monetary transfers.

Example: Transferring money from one account to another involves multiple operations that must either all succeed or all fail to maintain the integrity of account balances.

Why Transactions? Transactions ensure that operations such as withdrawals, deposits, and transfers are handled safely and that no data corruption or loss occurs, even if failures happen during processing.

2. E-Commerce and Order Processing:

Use Case: E-commerce platforms use transactions to manage orders, inventory, and payments.

Example: When a customer places an order, multiple operations are needed: verifying stock availability, processing payment, updating inventory, and confirming the order.

Why Transactions? Ensuring that all these operations succeed or fail together is critical to prevent issues such as overselling out-of-stock items or charging the customer without completing the order.

3. Data Integrity in Multi-User Environments:

Use Case: In multi-user databases, transactions are used to ensure that data remains consistent even when multiple users are accessing and modifying the data concurrently.

Example: A customer might be updating their profile while another user is viewing the same data. Transactions prevent any conflicts or inconsistent data from being read or written by different users.

Why Transactions? Ensuring isolation prevents data conflicts in concurrent environments and ensures that no data is overwritten or incorrectly updated.

4. Distributed Systems and Microservices:

Use Case: In distributed systems, where multiple services or databases interact, transactions are essential for managing consistency across systems.

Example: A microservices architecture might involve a user registration process where multiple services (authentication, profile, and payment) need to update databases in a single transaction.

Why Transactions? Ensuring atomicity and consistency across services or databases prevents partial updates and guarantees that the system behaves correctly in failure scenarios.

5. Inventory Management Systems:

Use Case: In inventory management, transactions are used to update stock levels in response to sales, restocking, and inventory audits.

Example: When a product is sold, the inventory levels are updated across several systems. Transactions ensure that inventory data remains consistent even if there is a system failure during the update process.

Why Transactions? Preventing inconsistencies ensures that stock levels are accurate and reflects real-time changes.

How Transactions Work Along with Architecture?

In database management, transactions work within the architecture of the DBMS to ensure data integrity and concurrency control. Below is how transactions interact with database architecture:

1. Transaction Log (Redo/Undo Logs):

Most DBMS maintain a transaction log to record all operations performed within a transaction. These logs are used to undo or redo changes in case of a failure.

How It Works: Every transaction is recorded in a log file, and in the event of a failure, the DBMS can revert the database back to its previous state (using rollback) or apply the changes (commit).

Example: In a banking system, the log might record every deposit and withdrawal so that if the system crashes, the last successful transaction can be reapplied or undone.

2. Isolation and Locking Mechanism:

Isolation ensures that transactions are executed independently, even when executed concurrently. To achieve this, most DBMS use locks on resources (such as rows or tables).

How It Works: When a transaction accesses a resource, the DBMS locks it to prevent other transactions from making changes at the same time. This is crucial in concurrent systems to ensure that data is not modified inconsistently.

Example: In an e-commerce system, when a user updates their cart, the DBMS may lock the cart record until the transaction is completed, ensuring that no one else modifies the cart during the update.

3. Commit and Rollback Mechanism:

Commit and Rollback are the two key operations for handling transaction finality:

Commit: Once a transaction has successfully completed, the changes are committed to the database, making them permanent.

Rollback: If there is an issue during the transaction (e.g., failure or inconsistency), a rollback operation reverts all changes made during the transaction.

How It Works: The DBMS uses the transaction log to perform rollback operations, while commit operations ensure that all changes are written to the database permanently.

Example: If an error occurs while transferring money between two bank accounts, a rollback ensures no money is lost or incorrectly transferred.

What Are the Basic Workflow of Transactions?

The basic workflow of a transaction involves several key stages:

1. Begin the Transaction:

The transaction begins with the
BEGIN TRANSACTION
statement, which marks the start of the logical unit of work.

Example:

BEGIN TRANSACTION;

2. Execute Operations:

Various operations (such as
INSERT
,
UPDATE
, or
DELETE
) are performed within the transaction, making changes to the database.

These operations are not visible to other transactions until the transaction is committed.

3. Commit or Rollback:

Once all operations are completed, the transaction is either committed or rolled back:

Commit: All changes are saved to the database permanently.

Rollback: All changes made during the transaction are undone, restoring the database to its previous state.

Example:

COMMIT;  -- Or ROLLBACK;

4. Handling Failures:

If any part of the transaction fails (e.g., a constraint violation or system crash), a rollback is issued automatically to maintain consistency.

If the system crashes after a commit, the database will maintain the changes, ensuring durability.

Step-by-Step Getting Started Guide for Transactions

Here’s a simple guide to working with transactions in a relational database:

Step 1: Set Up the Environment

Ensure you have access to a DBMS (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server).

You should have basic knowledge of SQL and be familiar with database operations like
SELECT
,
INSERT
,
UPDATE
, and
DELETE
.

Step 2: Create the Database and Tables

Set up your database schema with tables.

Example:

CREATE TABLE accounts (
    account_id INT PRIMARY KEY,
    balance DECIMAL(10, 2)
);

Step 3: Begin a Transaction

Start a new transaction using the
BEGIN TRANSACTION
statement.

Example:

BEGIN TRANSACTION;

Step 4: Perform Database Operations

Execute the required database operations (e.g., transferring money, updating records).

Example:

UPDATE accounts SET balance = balance - 100 WHERE account_id = 1;
UPDATE accounts SET balance = balance + 100 WHERE account_id = 2;

Step 5: Commit or Rollback the Transaction

If all operations succeed, commit the transaction. If something goes wrong, rollback the transaction.

Example:

COMMIT;  -- If successful
-- OR
ROLLBACK; -- If an error occurs

Step 6: Verify Changes

After committing, verify that the changes were applied correctly by querying the database.

Example:

SELECT * FROM accounts;

Oracle’s architecture is designed to provide high-performance, reliable, and secure data management solutions. Below is a breakdown of how Oracle works and its key architectural components:

1. Oracle Database Architecture

Instance: An Oracle instance consists of memory structures and background processes that manage database operations. These include System Global Area (SGA) and Program Global Area (PGA).

SGA stores data that is shared among all users, such as cache and log information. PGA stores data that is specific to a session or user, such as query execution data.

Data Files: The data files store actual database data (tables, indexes, etc.) and are located on disk storage.

Control Files: These files contain critical information about the database, including its structure and transaction logs.

Redo Log Files: Oracle maintains redo logs to track changes made to the database, enabling recovery in the event of a system failure.

2. Multi-Tier Architecture

Oracle supports a multi-tier architecture that separates the user interface, application logic, and database storage layers:

Database Tier: The Oracle Database resides in this layer, managing data storage and retrieval.

Application Tier: This layer contains the business logic and interacts with the database to retrieve and update data.

User Interface Tier: The user interface is the front-end application (web interface or mobile app) that communicates with the application tier to display data.

3. Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)

Oracle RAC is a high-availability feature that allows multiple Oracle instances to access a single database, providing load balancing, fault tolerance, and scalability. If one instance goes down, others can take over, ensuring that database services remain available.

4. Oracle Data Guard

Oracle Data Guard provides disaster recovery by maintaining standby copies of the primary database. In case of failure, the standby database can take over, ensuring minimal downtime.

5. Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM)

Oracle ASM simplifies storage management by abstracting storage at the file system level. It organizes disks into disk groups for improved performance and manageability.

6. Oracle’s SQL and PL/SQL

Oracle uses SQL (Structured Query Language) for querying and managing data. In addition, PL/SQL (Procedural Language/SQL) is Oracle’s procedural extension to SQL, allowing for the creation of stored procedures, functions, and triggers.

What is Entity Framework (EF) Core?

Entity Framework (EF) Core is an open-source, cross-platform Object-Relational Mapper (ORM) for .NET applications. It provides a set of tools for developers to interact with relational databases using C# objects instead of writing raw SQL queries. EF Core is the successor of Entity Framework and is a lightweight, more modular, and extensible version designed to work with .NET Core and .NET Framework applications.

EF Core allows developers to use LINQ (Language Integrated Query) to query databases, map objects to database tables, and perform CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations, all within the context of an object-oriented approach. EF Core makes it easier to work with databases in .NET applications, providing a database-agnostic solution that supports multiple database engines, including SQL Server, SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and others.

Key features of EF Core include:

Cross-platform: Works on both Windows and non-Windows platforms (Linux, macOS), making it ideal for cloud applications.

Code-first approach: Developers can define their data models in C# code, and EF Core will create the database schema.

Database-first approach: EF Core also supports reverse-engineering an existing database into a model.

Performance: EF Core is designed to be lightweight and performant, making it suitable for modern cloud applications.

Migrations: EF Core includes support for database migrations, allowing developers to manage schema changes over time without losing data.

EF Core is typically used in .NET applications where developers need to handle database operations in an object-oriented manner, abstracting much of the complexity of working directly with SQL.

What are the Major Use Cases of Entity Framework (EF) Core?

Entity Framework Core is a versatile tool for many types of .NET applications where data is stored and retrieved from relational databases. Some major use cases include:

1. Web Application Development

EF Core is widely used in ASP.NET Core web applications for interacting with databases. It enables developers to easily implement CRUD operations and complex queries directly from their C# code. It’s particularly useful in web apps that require dynamic content from databases (e.g., user data, product catalogs, etc.). EF Core simplifies data access in MVC and Razor Pages applications by providing a streamlined API for querying and updating the database.

2. Enterprise Applications

EF Core is often used in enterprise-level applications where the database model can be quite complex. The ORM’s code-first approach allows for easy modification of database schemas as business requirements change. Large-scale applications with multiple interrelated entities benefit from EF Core’s ability to define relationships (one-to-many, many-to-many) between objects.

3. Data-Driven Applications

Applications that need to access large volumes of data from a database in a structured format benefit greatly from EF Core. Whether you’re building an inventory management system, customer relationship management (CRM) tool, or data analysis platform, EF Core simplifies the process of querying and updating data. It integrates seamlessly with LINQ to provide a simple, object-oriented syntax for complex queries.

4. Cross-Platform Applications

EF Core works with .NET Core, which means it can be used to build cross-platform applications. Developers can build applications that run on Linux, macOS, and Windows with EF Core, leveraging its robust data management capabilities regardless of the operating system.

5. Microservices Architecture

In a microservices architecture, EF Core helps manage databases for different services. Each microservice can have its own isolated database, and EF Core makes it easy to handle the persistence layer within these services, ensuring data consistency and reducing overhead.

6. Cloud-Based Applications

Since EF Core is cross-platform and lightweight, it is a popular choice for cloud applications, especially those hosted on platforms like Microsoft Azure. It integrates with cloud databases such as Azure SQL Database and Cosmos DB. The built-in migration system also simplifies handling schema changes in cloud environments, where applications may undergo frequent updates.

How Entity Framework (EF) Core Works Along with Architecture?

EF Core fits into the architecture of a .NET application as the data access layer (DAL). It allows developers to interact with databases without having to write raw SQL queries. The workflow involves mapping entities (classes) to database tables, querying data using LINQ, and performing CRUD operations. Here’s a breakdown of how EF Core works with architecture:

1. Database-First and Code-First Approaches

EF Core supports both database-first and code-first approaches for defining the database schema:

Code-first: Developers define their C# models (classes), and EF Core generates the database schema based on these models.

Database-first: Developers start with an existing database and use reverse engineering to generate C# classes representing the database structure.

These two approaches allow flexibility, depending on whether you’re building a new application from scratch or integrating with an existing database.

2. Model-View-Controller (MVC) Architecture

EF Core integrates well with the MVC architecture commonly used in web applications. In this pattern:

Model: The C# classes (entities) in EF Core define the structure of the data, such as customer, order, and product classes.

View: The view is responsible for displaying the data, often using Razor Pages in ASP.NET Core applications.

Controller: The controller uses EF Core to interact with the database, fetching data, and sending it to the view for display.

EF Core handles the data retrieval and business logic associated with the model, while the controller orchestrates the communication between the view and the data layer.

3. DbContext

The core component in EF Core is the DbContext class. This class represents the session between the application and the database. It manages the entities, queries, transactions, and changes to the data. DbContext acts as a unit of work and is responsible for saving changes to the database and querying data.

Example of DbContext usage:

public class ApplicationDbContext : DbContext
{
    public DbSet<User> Users { get; set; }
    public DbSet<Product> Products { get; set; }

    protected override void OnConfiguring(DbContextOptionsBuilder options)
    {
        options.UseSqlServer("Your_Connection_String_Here");
    }
}

4. LINQ Queries

EF Core supports LINQ (Language Integrated Query) to retrieve data from the database. LINQ allows you to write database queries in C# using familiar syntax, and EF Core translates these LINQ queries into the appropriate SQL statements for the database. This abstraction simplifies the development process by eliminating the need to write raw SQL queries.

Example of a LINQ query using EF Core:

var users = context.Users.Where(u => u.Age > 18).ToList();

5. Database Migrations

EF Core includes a migrations feature that helps manage database schema changes. Developers can create migrations to update the database schema without losing data. Migrations help in versioning the schema and applying incremental changes in production environments.

dotnet ef migrations add InitialCreate
dotnet ef database update

Basic Workflow of Entity Framework (EF) Core

The typical workflow of using EF Core in a .NET application involves setting up the context, defining models, querying data, and saving changes to the database. Here’s an outline of the process:

Define the DbContext
The first step is to define a
DbContext
class that represents the connection between your application and the database. This context will contain DbSet properties for each entity (table) you want to interact with.

Define the Model Classes (Entities)
Define C# classes (entities) that map to the tables in the database. Each class will have properties that correspond to the columns in the table.

Configure the Database Connection
In the
DbContext
class, configure the connection string to the database using the
OnConfiguring
method or through dependency injection in the Startup.cs file (for ASP.NET Core).

Use LINQ to Query the Database
Use LINQ queries on
DbSet
properties to retrieve data from the database. EF Core translates these queries into SQL and executes them on the database.

Perform CRUD Operations

Create: Add new records to the database using
DbSet.Add()
and then call
SaveChanges()
.

Read: Query the database using LINQ or SQL commands.

Update: Modify existing records and save changes with
SaveChanges()
.

Delete: Remove records from the database using
DbSet.Remove()
and commit changes.

Handle Database Migrations
Use the migrations feature to apply schema changes. When you modify your models, generate and apply a migration to update the database schema without losing existing data.

Step-by-Step Getting Started Guide for Entity Framework (EF) Core

Follow these steps to get started with EF Core:

Step 1: Install EF Core

You can install EF Core using NuGet or by using the dotnet CLI:

dotnet add package Microsoft.EntityFrameworkCore.SqlServer

Step 2: Define Your DbContext and Model Classes

Create a
DbContext
class and define your model (entity) classes:

public class ApplicationDbContext : DbContext
{
    public DbSet<User> Users { get; set; }
    public DbSet<Product> Products { get; set; }
}

Define the
User
and
Product
classes with properties representing the columns in the database.

Step 3: Configure the Database Connection

In your
Startup.cs
, configure the connection string and add EF Core to the service container:

public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services)
{
    services.AddDbContext<ApplicationDbContext>(options =>
        options.UseSqlServer(Configuration.GetConnectionString("DefaultConnection")));
}

Step 4: Run Migrations

Use the following commands to create and apply migrations:

dotnet ef migrations add InitialCreate
dotnet ef database update

Step 5: Perform CRUD Operations

You can now interact with the database using EF Core. For example, to query data:

var users = dbContext.Users.ToList();

To add new data:

var newUser = new User { Name = "John Doe", Age = 30 };
dbContext.Users.Add(newUser);
dbContext.SaveChanges();

Step 6: Update and Delete Records

To update a record:

var user = dbContext.Users.FirstOrDefault(u => u.Name == "John Doe");
user.Age = 31;
dbContext.SaveChanges();

To delete a record:

var userToDelete = dbContext.Users.FirstOrDefault(u => u.Name == "John Doe");
dbContext.Users.Remove(userToDelete);
dbContext.SaveChanges();

By following this guide, you’ll be able to start using EF Core to manage database operations in your .NET applications. As you gain more experience with EF Core, you’ll be able to explore advanced features like lazy loading, eager loading, and complex queries, which make EF Core a powerful tool for modern application development.

Oracle is a relational database management system (RDBMS) that stores and manages data. It is one of the most popular RDBMSs in the world, and it is used by businesses of all sizes. Oracle works by storing data in tables. A table is a collection of related data that is organized in rows and columns. Each row in a table represents a single record, and each column represents a single field of data. Oracle uses a client-server architecture. This means that there is a client-side application that interacts with the Oracle database server.

The client-side application sends requests to the server, and the server returns the results of those requests. The Oracle database server is responsible for storing and managing the data. It also performs tasks such as querying, updating, and deleting data. The Oracle architecture is designed to be scalable and reliable. Oracle can be used to store and manage large amounts of data, and it can be used in high-performance environments.

Here are some of the key components of the Oracle architecture:

Database: The database is the heart of the Oracle system. It stores all of the data that is being managed by Oracle.

Server: The server is responsible for managing the database. It processes queries, updates, and deletes, and it ensures that the data is always consistent.

Client: The client is the application that interacts with the Oracle server. It sends requests to the server, and it receives the results of those requests.

Network: The network connects the client and the server. It allows the client to send requests to the server, and it allows the server to return the results of those requests.

Administration tools: Oracle provides a variety of administration tools that can be used to manage the Oracle system. These tools can be used to create and manage databases, create and manage users, and monitor the performance of the Oracle system.

How to Install and Configure Oracle?

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com

CAMBRIDGE, England–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Marking its fifth year examining the global tech community’s practices around DevOps and database development, Redgate’s 2021 State of Database DevOps Report will be unlike any other before it. In a year of unprecedented firsts with a global pandemic, IT professionals and database administrators evolved their database development practices in 2020. As DevOps adoption continues to rise, with 30% of respondents saying they had adopted DevOps practices in 2016 compared to 68% in the last report, numbers are expected to rise further to meet the new demands of remote work environments.

With the survey now open for participation until midnight GMT on December 15, Redgate will donate $1 to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for every submission received.

Redgate is marking the approach toward 2021 with notable achievements in its mission to provide IT teams with database DevOps tools and solutions that meet the most stringent compliance requirements, including:

Inclusion in the Gartner Hype Cycle for Agile and DevOps, 2020, with Redgate cited as a Sample Vendor in the Continuous Compliance Automation category. Research from Redgate’s 2020 State of Database DevOps Report pointed to compliance as a growing concern for companies. For Redgate, mention in the Gartner report strengthened the company’s commitment to supporting customers with a DevOps-focused approach to the database to balance the accelerated delivery that comes with DevOps, alongside the need to adhere to regulatory compliance.

The acquisition of the popular open source database migration tool, Flyway, was finalized in 2020, which meant that database development teams could better automate deployments across multiple platforms to ensure faster delivery without compromising on code quality. As experts on developing a portfolio of SQL Server tools, the Flyway acquisition pointed to a growing trend of companies adopting multiple databases. By bringing it all under one roof, Redgate could invest heavily in Flyway to secure the future of the community version of the tool, expand its portfolio to new markets, and solidify the company as experts on database DevOps.

In addition to Flyway, Redgate saw major product updates and launches this year, including SQL Monitor version 11, which gives IT teams the ability to monitor all of their servers, databases and instances, whether on-premises or in the cloud, all on one screen. With hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments growing fast amid the pandemic, SQL Monitor V. 11 allows database professionals to maintain the performance of their servers, wherever they are hosted. To address the growing need for sensitive data protection, Redgate released Data Masker 7.1, which masks sensitive data across database tables when moving information into production so developers can protect critical customer information, but still maintain the speed of delivery that customers expect.

Many of these updates were based on the knowledge that came from Redgate’s annual State of Database DevOps Report and State of Database Monitoring Report, which saw rising rates of adoption for both DevOps and automation, while highlighting the need for more advanced database monitoring and security solutions to manage the surge of cloud deployments and longer-term remote work environments, respectively. As business environments continue to adopt new strategies for 2021, Redgate remains ready to provide tools and support to best fit the changing needs of IT teams everywhere.

“2020 was a challenging year for every IT department, and I commend our Redgate employees for continuing to find those silver linings in difficult situations,” said Redgate CEO Simon Galbraith. “We’ve increased our support to customers, including offering free online technical courses, our staff launched a Coding Club to keep kids engaged away from classrooms, and we all celebrated together virtually for Redgate’s twenty-first birthday. We truly have the best team in the business and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished this year and looking forward to a brighter 2021.”..

Source:-https://www.gadgetbridge.com

Google Cloud has launched the new serverless Database Migration Service (DMS) as part of its vision to meet the modern needs in a way that’s easier, faster, more predictable, and more reliable. The tech giant has further revealed that enterprises across all industries are answering the call to move their business infrastructure, and with that their databases, to the cloud.

Asserting that the database migrations can be a challenge for enterprises, Andi Gutmans, General Manager and Vice President of Engineering, Databases, said, “That’s why we give our customers a uniquely easy, secure, and reliable experience with DMS. We worked with dozens of customers around the world, including Samsung Electronics, Adwerx, Affle, Cirruseo (Accenture), Guichê Virtual, and Ryde, to successfully migrate their production databases with minimal downtime using DMS. So, what is it exactly that makes DMS different?”

DMS provides a fast and seamless migration to Cloud SQL, the fully managed database service for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server. By migrating to Cloud SQL, one not only benefit from its enterprise-grade availability, security, and stability, but you also get unique integrations with the rest of Google Cloud, including Google Kubernetes Engine and BigQuery. “We needed to create live dashboards built on top of BigQuery that pulled data from both on-premises and cloud sources. Google Cloud’s Database Migration Service made this easy for us,” says Sofiane Kihal, Engineer, Cirruseo (Accenture). “Using its continuous replication, we were able to migrate data to Cloud SQL and then query directly using federation from BigQuery. Additionally, using Cloud SQL as a managed service for MySQL has allowed us to reduce the time we spend on operations by over 75 percent.”

According to Google Cloud, “DMS provides high-fidelity, minimal downtime migrations for MySQL and PostgreSQL workloads. We designed it to be truly cloud-native—built by and for the cloud. DMS utilizes log shipping to replicate data at super-low latencies from the source database to the destination. It streams the initial snapshot of data, then catches up and continuously replicates new data as it arrives in the source.”

Stating that the source and destination are continuously up to date because they rely on the databases’ own native replication capabilities, Gutmans said, “This replication technique maximizes the fidelity of data transferred with very low latency. That means you can decide when you’re ready to promote your database, then just point your application to Cloud SQL as the primary database, with minimal downtime.”

Database deployments are increasingly being managed with DevOps practices. A Redgate survey of 2,000 developers reveals rising automation, tighter DBA-developer collaboration, and measurable quality gains — but version control adoption still lags.

This article is based on findings reported by ZDNet drawing on a Redgate Software survey of approximately 2,000 developers. Original survey data and quotes are attributed to Redgate Software and its contributors.

DevOps Is No Longer Just for Application Code

For most of its history, DevOps has been synonymous with application delivery — continuous integration pipelines, automated testing, and frequent releases of application code. Databases, by contrast, were often treated as static infrastructure: carefully managed, rarely automated, and firmly in the hands of DBAs working in isolation from development teams.

That picture is changing. According to a Redgate Software survey of roughly 2,000 developers, database changes are increasingly being managed with the same principles applied to application code: version control, automated testing, continuous delivery, and collaborative ownership.

“Databases are recognized as another code deployment which can and should be managed, tested, automated, and improved with the same robust, reliable methodologies applied to application code.”
— Kendra Little, DevOps Advocate, Redgate Software

Key Findings: Adoption Is Rising, but Unevenly

The survey paints a picture of an industry in transition. DevOps adoption for databases is clearly growing, but it remains inconsistent — particularly around foundational practices like version control.

Adoption and Deployment Frequency

68% of respondents are in some phase of DevOps adoption across their projects.

18% say they have adopted DevOps “across all projects,” up from 15% the previous year.

46% are performing some form of database deployment automation.

49% report needing to deploy database changes weekly or on-demand — up significantly from 37% in a comparable 2017 survey.

More than 60% of managers in larger enterprises believe a full transition from traditional to automated database deployments can be achieved within a year.

The Version Control Gap

One of the more striking findings is how many teams are deploying frequently without the safety net of version control. Of those deploying database changes weekly or more often, only 47% report using version control for their database schemas and migration scripts. That means a substantial share of teams are making direct changes to production databases without a reliable audit trail or rollback mechanism — a practice that directly correlates with defects requiring hotfixes, according to the survey.

Why Databases Present Unique DevOps Challenges

Applying DevOps to databases is not simply a matter of bolting a pipeline onto an existing schema. As Kellyn Pot’Vin-Gorman, co-author of the Redgate report, explains, databases introduce a set of concerns that don’t arise with stateless application code:

“Databases, which were formerly seen as configurable repositories much like file shares, are now seen as stateful data, controlled by code. However, databases present unique challenges in using change methodology due to the very nature and value of data. In particular, data loss can put the continued existence of the company at risk. This results in database deployments requiring more care than standard change management to ensure the code that’s deployed and data quality aren’t impacted. The natural state of a database environment is growth, so as the surface area naturally spreads, the challenge of change management and releases becomes more daunting.”
— Kellyn Pot’Vin-Gorman, Report Co-Author, Redgate Software

The core challenge is statefulness. Unlike application binaries that can be replaced atomically, a database holds the organisation’s actual data. A bad migration can corrupt or destroy records that have real business value — and unlike a failed application deployment, a failed database migration may not be trivially reversible.

The Cost of Staying Siloed

The survey asked respondents to identify the biggest drawbacks of keeping database development separate from application development pipelines. The top responses were:

Slow development and release cycles — cited by 24% of respondents.

Inability to respond quickly to changing business requirements — cited by 21%.

Increased risk of failed deployments or downtime — cited by 18%.

These are not abstract concerns. In a competitive environment where applications ship continuously, a database team on a quarterly release cycle becomes a bottleneck that slows the entire organisation.

Developers Own Database Work — Whether They’re Ready or Not

One clear finding is that database responsibility has shifted significantly toward developers. 78% of survey respondents say they are responsible for both application and database deployment. This reflects a broader trend in which full-stack ownership — including the data layer — is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

This shift creates both opportunity and risk. Developers who own the full stack can ship features end-to-end without waiting for handoffs, but they also need the tooling, processes, and training to handle database changes safely. The version control gap highlighted above suggests that tooling and process adoption has not fully kept pace with the expansion of responsibility.

DevOps Improves Developer–DBA Collaboration

One of the more encouraging findings is the impact DevOps adoption has on the relationship between developers and database administrators. The survey found a significant difference in collaboration depending on whether DevOps practices were in place:

82% of developers in DevOps settings report that they and DBAs work together as a team.

In non-DevOps settings, that figure drops to 58%.

This is consistent with the broader DevOps principle that organisational silos — not just technical ones — are a primary source of delivery friction. When database and application teams operate in a shared pipeline with shared visibility, collaboration becomes a natural byproduct of the workflow.

Measurable Quality Benefits for Teams That Go All In

Teams that have fully embraced database DevOps practices report better outcomes than those still in transition. According to the survey:

Respondents who reported that all or nearly all their database deployments take place with the system online also reported lower lead times for changes and lower defect rates.

37% of those who have adopted DevOps across all projects report that 1% or fewer of their deployments introduce code defects requiring hotfixes.

That compares to 30% for all other groups — a meaningful gap that suggests full adoption, not partial adoption, drives quality improvements.

What DataOps Adds to the Picture

It is worth distinguishing database DevOps from the related discipline of DataOps. While database DevOps focuses on applying CI/CD and change-management practices to database schema and code changes, DataOps is broader: it applies similar automation and quality principles to the flow of data itself through an organisation — from ingestion and transformation pipelines to analytics and reporting. Both disciplines are growing, and in mature organisations they increasingly overlap.

Practical Takeaways for Engineering Teams

Based on the survey findings, teams looking to improve their database delivery practices should prioritise the following:

Put your database schemas and migration scripts under version control. This is the minimum baseline for repeatable, auditable deployments. Given that nearly half of frequent deployers are skipping this step, it represents the single biggest gap in current practice.

Automate database deployments as part of your CI/CD pipeline. Manual deployments are slower and more error-prone. Treating schema changes as code — validated in a pipeline before reaching production — reduces defect rates.

Integrate DBA expertise into the development workflow. Rather than a handoff model, embed DBA knowledge into design and code review. The data shows that DevOps teams do this far more effectively than non-DevOps teams.

Plan for zero-downtime migrations. The survey links online deployments to better lead times and lower defect rates. Techniques such as expand-contract migrations, backward-compatible schema changes, and blue-green database deployments make this achievable.

Test database changes as rigorously as application code. This includes unit tests for stored procedures, integration tests against a representative data set, and automated rollback verification.

Conclusion

The Redgate survey is a useful data point in a broader shift: databases are no longer exempt from the engineering discipline applied to the rest of the software stack. As deployment frequency increases and developer ownership of the data layer grows, the teams that treat database changes as first-class code — versioned, tested, automated, and collaboratively owned — are already seeing measurable advantages in release quality and speed. The version control and automation gaps that remain represent both a risk for teams that haven’t closed them and an opportunity for those ready to do so.

Source:-newelectronics.co.uk Wind River has unveiled a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) model for Wind River Linux customers. By following […]

Source:-newelectronics.co.uk

Wind River has unveiled a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) model for Wind River Linux customers.

By following a CI/CD process customers will have access to new releases every few weeks. This will allow teams to begin to build their own continuous integration and delivery systems for their customers, get a head start on building new platforms sooner, and enjoy similar benefits of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) management, technical support, and quality typically found in annual and Long Term Support (LTS) releases.

“In the 5G era, as companies are racing to innovate, they have a greater need for frequent software updates and nonstop security monitoring. Many update their software on a weekly basis, and some are updating applications every day or even hourly,” said Michel Genard, vice president of product, Wind River. “Companies want a continuous stream of updated code and features from a trusted source. On a daily basis, Wind River tests and validates a variety of use cases relevant across industries, with thousands of test cases every night. This testing, coupled with constant feedback and active engagement from customers, is designed to ensure high levels of quality for our deliverables.”

Using CI/CD practices to advance its own DevOps culture and deliver high-quality software, Wind River is providing continuous delivery that enables customers to integrate Wind River Linux into their continuous integration processes. The development and maintenance processes for Wind River releases are certified for quality under ISO 9001:2015. Wind River is the first company to ever be OpenChain conformant, which means that certification for open source license compliance and usage allows users to trust the open source from which software solutions are built.

CI/CD best practices contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by enabling teams to adopt, adapt, and implement small changes rapidly and reliably. As connectivity rises across sectors, new data and applications are under constant change, and companies must adjust their processes in order to incorporate, validate, and deliver new features and applications.

According to Wind River, embedded system developers who are interested in CI/CD but do not yet have the infrastructure for that development model will be able to get support from the company. Customers who currently develop software on a fixed version of the Linux kernel due to tight restrictions around certifications, such as those creating medical systems, can continue to work with Wind River Linux LTS yearly releases.

More common in the enterprise realm, container usage is typically a challenge in the embedded space, due to the need for a highly optimised software stack. Existing frameworks often lack the right design or support for mission-critical industries that employ embedded devices with extremely long lifecycles that require lighter-weight software with a smaller footprint. Wind River Linux already includes pre-built containers, tools, and documentation and support for frameworks such as Docker and Kubernetes, which can help developers deploy applications across the intelligent edge using cloud-native methods. Wind River Linux has added the capability to asynchronously update containers and the base operating system (OS) separately. When running multiple applications, with each in its own container, on top of Wind River Linux, these containerised applications can be updated without having to update or reboot the host OS.

Linux tools often require special adaptations for embedded software development. Wind River is now providing new commercial tooling options for Linux application developers to enable their use of the latest open source innovations.

A new version of the Eclipse-based Wind River Workbench for Linux LTS provides an application development environment for build, debug, and system analysis tools.

Wind River also has teamed with partners such as Percepio AB to ensure that there is both an open source and a commercial ecosystem of tools that address the needs of Wind River Linux developers. The Percepio Tracealyzer trace visualization tool provides a large number of high-level views to make it easier to spot anomalies in program execution and to trace them to the root cause without requiring a great deal of Linux kernel expertise.

Wind River is providing a Linux subscription in order to provide long term support and maintenance, including security updates, for the upstream Wind River Linux content.

Wind River’s security team is constantly monitoring the CVE database, security notifications from U.S. government agencies and organisations such as NIST and US CERT, and public and private security mailing lists. By leveraging commercial grade ISO 9001:2015–certified Wind River Linux, support, and services, teams are able to significantly reduce production and maintenance costs and accelerate development cycles in comparison to in-house efforts.

The latest version of Wind River Linux also includes a robust collection of full-featured board support packages (BSPs).

Source:-computerweekly.com Amazon Web Services is the undisputed leader of the public cloud market, but could its relatively small software-as-a-service portfolio […]

Source:-computerweekly.com

Amazon Web Services is the undisputed leader of the public cloud market, but could its relatively small software-as-a-service portfolio be its undoing in years to come?

As the provider with the biggest market share in the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) sector, it is inevitable that Amazon Web Services (AWS) will cop some flak from various competitors claiming their platforms are a better choice for CIOs.

One of those digs, from the likes of Oracle, Microsoft and Google, could be that AWS does not have its own slate of software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings, whereas the three companies just mentioned do.

The inference being that not having a SaaS play means AWS does not have a fully integrated cloud stack that would, in the minds of its competitors at least, be easier to use as well as more effective.

Oracle’s senior vice-president for cloud, Steve Daheb, believes, in the long term, the database giant has the edge over AWS because it provides the SaaS layer that Amazon has shied away from offering.

“It doesn’t have applications to speak of, and applications drive a lot of the rest of decision-making,” he tells Computer Weekly.

Meanwhile, Andrew Moore, vice-president and head of Google Cloud AI, sees the SaaS layer as one Google’s strong points.

“We are a consumer company that’s built many consumer-level, high-performance systems, so rather than just providing that low-level infrastructure, we are able to help with things involving computer vision, speech understanding, super-advanced networking and very highly optimised database queries, for instance,” says Moore.

“What we and the rest of the industry have learnt is that rather than just providing APIs [application programming interfaces] to these systems for innovative solutions for companies to adopt, we’re able to give more use to customers by putting it all together ourselves and then integrating that into customers’ businesses processes,” he adds.

Weighing up the differences
AWS has repeatedly dodged questions about whether it would step up its SaaS game, but do users really care about a company having its own SaaS, IaaS and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings, or is it more a case of suppliers squabbling about nothing?

John Lewis Partnership’s chief technology officer (CTO), Andrew MacInnes, says having a presence and offerings in all three layers of the cloud helps, and suggests this played a part in the retailer’s decision to use the Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

“It absolutely helps. We’re not exclusive to Google, so we’ll move where we move, but what matters is the value in the proposition above all,” he says.

MacInnes says a large part of cloud computing can be considered a commodity now, with managed databases, managed SQL databases, queuing systems, message passing and so on. So there is little point in taking a best-of-breed approach if the differences are minute.

“You can argue that you prefer one to the other, but for us the value is stronger in our relationship and in the help and assistance we get, rather than arguing that one might be two milliseconds faster than the other,” he says.

“For us, the value is in our relationship and the help and assistance we get, rather than arguing that one might be two milliseconds faster than the other”
Andrew MacInnes, John Lewis Partnership
In other words, having SaaS, PaaS and IaaS with one cloud provider makes more sense because it means the company can rely on one partner for support.

For others, however, the thought process is quite different.

“I guess I don’t look at it that way [that AWS has less of a presence in SaaS]. I look at the fact that we’re using tools that work for us, meaning we have less people worrying about provisioning hardware, supporting hardware and innovating,” says Just Eat’s director of data platforms, Matthew Cresswell.

“I think from a neutral point of view, I know AWS has some SaaS offerings and I know it has a lot of different products that overlap as well, so I think there’s some element of customer fatigue, whereas with Google, perhaps, because it’s a bit younger in this space, in terms of the tools, it seems a lot cleaner and packaged up in such a way that we want to use it,” he adds.

Furthermore, Google’s Moore suggests customers have switched from being sole AWS customers to using Google Cloud because of its SaaS layer.

“There have been hundreds of customers who have said, ‘We thought we would only use another cloud infrastructure, but what you’re able to do with BigQuery and AI has intrigued us’, and they will then start to build systems on GCP to access that level of performance,” he says.

The AWS SaaS play
AWS does have some SaaS applications of its own. Amazon Kendra, the company’s enterprise search offering, is an interesting addition to this small portfolio, particularly as it doesn’t have a wide range of its own SaaS applications for its machine learning algorithm to improve its search capabilities.

But aside from that, the company has steered away from SaaS, instead opting to enable partners to build SaaS on top of AWS infrastructure, and integrating key partner SaaS offerings with its IaaS. For many customers, this is all they need.

“Arguably, a lot of what AWS does is similar to SaaS-based products – it’s taking Postgres and scaling that out and innovating on top and contributing, for example. I don’t think Amazon necessarily needs to provide these products,” says Suhail Patel, senior software engineer at Monzo Bank.

Indeed, this is the view from AWS too.

“If our customers are telling us that they want us to purely come into [SaaS] and not just rely on a set of really great partners, but they want us to deliver those services, you’re going to see us innovate and do so,” says Darren Mowry, managing director of business development for AWS in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

But nevertheless, it has been a surprise that the company did not announce more when it came to SaaS at Re:Invent, its showcase event in Las Vegas this year.

“In some ways it is surprising that AWS’s business applications portfolio has been very low key at the past two events. Granted Re:Invent is primarily an IT developer and educational event, so the buyers of applications and, in particular, the business audiences who use them, are not the focus, but I think the market is starting to look at this area in AWS’s strategy to see whether it will play more strongly here in the future,” says Nicholas McQuire, vice-president of enterprise research at CCS Insight.

Mowry adds that with the introduction of Amazon Chime and Workspaces, the company is beginning to touch on services that are closer to SaaS.

“In time, you’ll see our capabilities across the stack continue to grow, but I don’t think I can say we have a specific strategy to enter a specific type of SaaS market,” he says.

“Right now, the strategy is doing some interesting things that are close to SaaS, but enabling partners to build great technology, and that will continue to be a part of the strategy, but I can’t say that there’s never a possibility that we wouldn’t get into [SaaS] full-scale,” he adds.

McQuire says Workspaces, Alexa for Business, Amazon Connect and Chime are foundations for SaaS, but these products “feel like second-class citizens to the IaaS business, as AWS has been investing more heavily in areas lower down the cloud stack”.

What customers want
Although AWS’s Mowry alludes to the company reacting to what customers are after, perhaps the reason AWS has lost out on certain clients is because Microsoft and Google have already had a presence in the enterprise through Office 365 or G Suite.

“Microsoft and Google have been winning big cloud deals with customers that nominate them as their preferred cloud partners – AT&T and Microsoft, Airbus and Google Cloud. These customers are focusing on both IT transformation and workplace transformation, so their SaaS applications have been critical alongside cloud infrastructure to winning those deals,” says McQuire.

McQuire adds that while AWS focused on business transformation throughout Re:Invent in December 2019, many companies think of this in its entirety, particularly the C-suite.

“This means they don’t just focus on their developers, they focus on all their employees and the tools they need to drive competitive advantage as well,” he says.

So could AWS not stand to have another entry point into enterprises like this?

Mowry isn’t sure that this type of strategy always works.

“Companies like Microsoft do tend to come in through Office 365 and attach Azure to an enterprise agreement. We’re seeing that this may work sometimes, but we’re also hearing from a lot of customers that it’s not the behaviour they want,” he says.

AWS is not struggling to attract large enterprises, and many of its existing customers see it as a main partner, including BP, F1, Monzo Bank and Vodafone
“I don’t think we’d do it to mirror what Google and Microsoft are doing to just give us an entry point. I think we’ll only do it if the customer says it’s a capability they really need because I’m sensing a bit of a backlash if we’re going to attach these things together. It could be an additional unintended consequence of us doing that, but I don’t think that would be the leading reason for us to do that,” he adds.

It must be noted that AWS is not struggling to attract large enterprises, and many of its existing customers see it as a main partner, including BP, F1, Monzo Bank and Vodafone.

However, in the long run, AWS may need a much deeper strategy to fill certain gaps it has in comparison to Microsoft and Google, particularly as an increasing number of cloud deals are incorporating the integration of SaaS.

“Doing so will enable AWS to support more business processes on its platform, as well as create opportunities to disrupt this area. Of course, AWS will have to tread carefully as many SaaS providers run on AWS and its partner ecosystem and marketplace are essential to its cloud offerings,” says McQuire.

Cloud adoption is accelerating, and certified AWS developers are in high demand. Here is what the AWS Certified Developer – Associate certification covers, who it is for, and why it can meaningfully advance your career.

Cloud adoption continues to accelerate across organizations of every size, yet a persistent skills gap makes it difficult for many teams to take full advantage of what cloud platforms offer. For developers who want to close that gap—and signal their expertise to employers—an AWS certification is one of the most recognized paths available.

Why AWS Certifications Stand Out

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is widely regarded as one of the leading public cloud platforms, with one of the broadest service catalogs in the industry. AWS offers a structured certification program that spans foundational, associate, professional, and specialty tiers, giving practitioners a clear progression path regardless of their starting point.

Unlike some vendor certification programs that demand expensive, proprietary training before you can even sit an exam, AWS certifications are designed to be accessible to working professionals. You do not need to leave your current role to prepare, and the exam blueprints clearly map to real-world job tasks.

What Is the AWS Certified Developer – Associate Exam?

The AWS Certified Developer – Associate certification targets developers who build, deploy, and debug cloud-based applications on AWS. It sits at the associate tier—the first tier above foundational—and is a logical next step after you have a basic understanding of core AWS concepts.

The exam tests your ability to:

Design and develop applications using AWS services and APIs

Deploy applications using AWS managed services such as Elastic Beanstalk and CloudFormation

Implement security controls, authentication, and authorization on AWS

Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize applications running on AWS infrastructure

Work with core services including Amazon S3, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, Lambda, and API Gateway

Prerequisites and Recommended Background

AWS does not enforce formal prerequisites, but candidates typically benefit from having the following before attempting the exam:

Familiarity with core AWS services, ideally from completing AWS Cloud Practitioner or AWS Essentials training (or equivalent hands-on experience)

Experience developing applications that consume REST or API-based interfaces

A working understanding of both relational and non-relational databases

General software development skills in at least one programming language supported by the AWS SDKs (Python, Java, Node.js, .NET, Go, etc.)

If you are already building applications day-to-day and have touched AWS services—even informally—you likely have more of this background than you realize.

Key AWS Services Covered

Preparation for this certification gives you practical exposure to the services developers interact with most frequently on AWS:

Amazon S3 – Object storage, versioning, lifecycle policies, and access control

Amazon DynamoDB – NoSQL database design, partitioning, and query patterns

Amazon SQS & SNS – Message queuing and pub/sub notification patterns

AWS Lambda – Serverless compute, event sources, and function configuration

AWS Elastic Beanstalk – Managed application deployment and environment configuration

AWS CloudFormation – Infrastructure as Code templates and stack management

Amazon API Gateway – Building and securing RESTful and WebSocket APIs

AWS IAM – Identity management, roles, and least-privilege access policies

Career Benefits of Becoming AWS Developer Associate Certified

Certification delivers value on several fronts:

Credibility with employers – The credential demonstrates validated knowledge of AWS best practices in architecture, security, and deployment, which hiring managers can quickly verify.

Broader role eligibility – Many job postings for cloud developer, DevOps engineer, and solutions architect roles list AWS certification as a preferred or required qualification.

Structured knowledge foundation – The exam blueprint forces systematic study of services you may only partially understand from day-to-day work, filling in important gaps.

Path to higher-tier certifications – Associate-level certification is the natural gateway to the Professional and Specialty tiers, including the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional.

It is worth being realistic: certification alone does not replace hands-on experience, and compensation differences depend heavily on role, location, and the skills you bring beyond the exam. The credential is a signal, not a guarantee.

Staying Current: Recertification

AWS updates its services and exam content regularly. To reflect this, all AWS certifications expire and require renewal. Certification holders must recertify to keep their credential active—either by passing a recertification exam or by earning a higher-tier certification in the same domain. Check the official AWS Certification site for current recertification policies, as timelines and options can change.

Getting Started

If you are new to AWS, begin with the free-tier account to get hands-on with the services listed above before attempting the exam. AWS provides official exam guides and sample questions through its certification portal. Supplement with structured training—whether self-paced video courses, instructor-led workshops, or practice labs—to build both conceptual understanding and the hands-on fluency the exam rewards.

The AWS Certified Developer – Associate certification is a well-scoped, achievable credential for working developers. It validates the skills organizations need as they deepen their cloud footprint, and it gives you a documented, vendor-recognized foundation to build on throughout your cloud career.

Source:-analyticsinsight.net It is well-known fact that technology has revolutionized people’s lives and with the rapid changes in the digital world, […]

Source:-analyticsinsight.net

It is well-known fact that technology has revolutionized people’s lives and with the rapid changes in the digital world, several companies have ventured into the cloud technologies and services. Their entry into the cloud computing market is owing to the need to shift from traditional to modern business approaches which is a pivot of the digital business world. Through this technology, companies want to find innovative ways to meet the needs of current customers and to drive digital revolution in the company.

Not only the present but the future is also expected to experience a great influence from cloud computing. According to a report, the global cloud computing market size for 2018 was US$ 36,700 million and is expected to hit US$ 28,5300 million by the end of 2026 growing at a CAGR of 29.2 percent in 2019-2026.

Additionally, the American market research company, Forrester has predicted that in 2020, the world will experience that the public cloud market, including cloud applications (SaaS), development and data platforms (PaaS), and infrastructure (IaaS) services combined, grow to US$ 299.4 billion. The report also stated that currently, 65 percent of North American enterprises depend on public cloud platforms, and 66 percent run internal private clouds.

Following are key highlights from Forrester’s 2020 Cloud Computing Predictions.

Companies and Hyperscale Cloud
IBM and Oracle are not expected to make any exit from the hyperscale cloud market which is currently dominated by AWS, Microsoft, Google, and Alibaba.

While IBM is more likely to focus on helping enterprises use Red Hat’s OpenShift development platform on any cloud in order to modernize core business apps, Oracle is expected to converge its focus on its SaaS and autonomous database products, recommending Azure for general-purpose cloud development services like AI/machine learning, Kubernetes/containers, internet of things, and other emerging innovations.

The company is also expected to sign a high-speed connectivity deal with AWS or Google to serve its customers.

The Chinese MNC, Alibaba is more likely to generate US$ 4.5 billion in global cloud platform revenue, surpassing Google. However, Google will retain its third-place ranking for North American clients due to Alibaba’s lesser impact in that region.

Solutions and Services
A battle is expected between hundreds of open source projects and vendors seeking developer’s attention in the cloud-native development ecosystem.

Reportedly, last year Kubernetes won the battle for container orchestration. It launched a host of new commercial offerings that infrastructure and operations pros are only now learning how to implement, secure, and operate.

Also, the service meshes promise even better and powerful inter-service networking, visibility, and security, and serverless opens new programming models abstracted completely from infrastructure concerns.

Today, Istio is exceptional in the service mesh space while Knative is a solid bet for serverless. Both are most likely be consumed by enterprises as part of a cloud-native development platform from AWS, Microsoft, Google, VMware/Pivotal, or IBM/Red Hat.

Cloud Security
As the Capital One breach in AWS has shifted limelight to the next big cloud management challenge, securing apps and data in such an increasingly hybrid cloud world has become crucial. Forrester predicts that the hyperscale cloud leaders will harness investment in their native security offerings. Also cross-cloud management providers must purchase, build, and/or acquire security capabilities to go beyond their prevailing identity and access management.

SaaS Vendors
The SaaS Vendors that were late to adapt to the infrastructure market are now opting for large-scale cloud infrastructure partners. For example, Infor is building its CloudSuite on AWS. The Forrester report also suggests that the Thistrend will become even more prominent in 2020.

According to Dave Bartoletti, Vice President, Principal Analyst at Forrester, “To compete in the SaaS space, you need to reduce your margins as much as possible. Salesforce, for example, is moving more and more of this backend to AWS; Microsoft’s Office 365 runs on Azure infrastructure. What this means is that [SaaS vendors] can get back to competing at what they’re good at, which is the application layer. They need to make the application better.”

Additionally, it has been noted by the report that the regional partnerships have already started where Workday has partnered with AWS in Canada and Salesforce with Alibaba in China.

High Performance Computing
According to Forrester, in 2020, large investments by cloud providers will successfully bring HPC to the cloud. Bartoletti said – “HPC is able to conduct a large amount of computing in a very small amount of time. High performance computing is a very specialized workload in different industries. It could be weather forecasting; it could be risk analysis. It could be analyzing farm data to find out the best place to plant crops based on the changing weather conditions.” He however, also noted that, “it’s been very expensive to run that in the public cloud because you have to buy all of this infrastructure and then turn it all off when you’re done using it.”

However, the report suggests that owing to significant investments, use of HPC in the cloud is expected to increase by 40 percent in 2020. Forrester says that this increase is driven by new public cloud instance types including AWS’s C5/P2/P3/G3 instances, Azure’s H-/NC-/ND-/NV-series, and Google’s V100/P100/K80, as well as new hybrid cloud offerings like C5 instances on AWS Outposts, new managed services like Azure’s partnership with Cray, and a growing number of industry-focused HPC solution providers.
