1. Introduction

With the rise of DevOps, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines have become the backbone of modern software development. At the heart of these pipelines are containers—lightweight, portable units that package software and its dependencies together.

However, as the speed of deployment increases, so does the attack surface. Containers, by design, are ephemeral and scalable, but they also introduce unique security challenges. Manual security measures can no longer keep up. This is where automated container security becomes essential.

This guide is a complete blueprint for DevOps teams looking to automate container security across their CI/CD pipelines.

2. Why Container Security Matters in CI/CD

Containers are used to build, test, and deploy applications at scale. While containers offer speed and portability, they also:

Share OS kernels, increasing risk from kernel exploits.

Often use images from public registries, which can be compromised.

Are dynamic and short-lived, making manual security nearly impossible.

Integrate deeply with CI/CD tools, risking widespread damage if compromised.

In a CI/CD environment, a single insecure container can lead to:

Supply chain attacks (compromised base images)

Credential leaks

Unauthorized access to production

Compliance violations

Therefore, securing containers—and automating this security—is no longer optional. It’s a necessity.

3. Common Security Risks in Containers and CI/CD

a. Insecure Images

Images pulled from public repositories may contain known vulnerabilities, malware, or misconfigurations.

b. Secrets in Containers

Hardcoded credentials, API keys, and tokens inside container images pose a significant risk if exposed.

c. Inadequate Isolation

Containers share the host kernel. If improperly configured, one container can escape and affect others.

d. Outdated Base Images

Using outdated images increases the chance of having unpatched CVEs in the container stack.

e. Unvalidated Inputs and Dependencies

Uncontrolled or unscanned libraries may introduce malicious code during build.

f. Weak CI/CD Pipeline Security

Unprotected Jenkins agents, GitHub Actions runners, or GitLab CI configurations are vulnerable to attacks.

4. Key Principles for Securing CI/CD Pipelines

Shift Left Security
Integrate security early in the development lifecycle—from code commit to image build.

Zero Trust Architecture
Assume no service or image is inherently trustworthy.

Policy-as-Code
Define security policies programmatically using tools like OPA (Open Policy Agent).

Immutable Infrastructure
Avoid mutable containers. Rebuild and redeploy instead of patching in place.

Security Observability
Make security events visible to teams using logging and alerting tools.

5. Automation Strategies for Container Security

Here are key areas where DevOps teams should automate container security:

a. Automated Image Scanning

Use scanners like Trivy, Grype, or Anchore to:

Detect known vulnerabilities (CVEs).

Identify outdated packages.

Check for embedded secrets.

Integrate scanners in:

Pre-commit hooks

CI build pipelines

Container registries

b. CI/CD Pipeline Security Gates

Enforce security policies at each stage:

Fail builds with critical CVEs.

Block deployments from unauthorized registries.

Allow only signed images.

c. Secrets Management

Use tools like HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, or Kubernetes Secrets to:

Inject secrets dynamically.

Rotate credentials automatically.

Avoid hardcoding sensitive data.

d. Runtime Threat Detection

Monitor containers post-deployment using tools like:

Falco (open-source runtime security)

Sysdig

Aqua Security

These tools detect suspicious activities like file modifications, reverse shells, or process anomalies.

e. Compliance Automation

Use tools like OpenSCAP, Kube-bench, or Checkov to:

Enforce CIS benchmarks.

Validate compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI-DSS.

Automate audit trails.

6. Tools and Technologies to Automate Container Security

Purpose

Tool

Description

Vulnerability Scanning

Trivy, Grype, Snyk

Scans container images for CVEs.

Secrets Detection

GitLeaks, Detect-Secrets

Detects secrets in code and images.

Policy Enforcement

OPA/Gatekeeper, Kyverno

Enforce custom security policies in CI/CD and Kubernetes.

Secrets Management

Vault, AWS Secrets Manager

Securely store and inject secrets.

Image Signing

Cosign, Notary

Verifies the origin and integrity of images.

Runtime Security

Falco, Aqua, Sysdig

Real-time detection and response for container anomalies.

Compliance & Benchmarking

Kube-bench, OpenSCAP

Validates infrastructure compliance.

7. Best Practices for DevOps Teams

✅ 1. Use Minimal Base Images

Prefer distroless or Alpine-based images to reduce the attack surface.

✅ 2. Implement Image Provenance

Sign images with tools like Cosign and verify them in CI/CD before deployment.

✅ 3. Restrict Network Access

Define strict network policies (via Calico, Cilium) to prevent lateral movement.

✅ 4. Enable Namespace Isolation

Separate build, test, and production environments using Kubernetes namespaces or separate clusters.

✅ 5. Limit Container Privileges

Avoid running containers as root. Use capabilities and securityContext settings in Kubernetes.

✅ 6. Audit Everything

Enable audit logging for container runtime, CI/CD actions, and registry access.

8. Real-World Use Case: Securing CI/CD for a FinTech Startup

Problem:
A FinTech startup built their app on Kubernetes using GitHub Actions. They used public base images and embedded secrets in CI scripts.

Risks Identified:

Images contained critical CVEs.

Credentials to payment gateways were exposed in logs.

Production containers ran with elevated privileges.

Automated Solutions Implemented:

Trivy scans integrated into GitHub Actions.

Secrets managed using HashiCorp Vault and injected via environment variables.

Cosign used for image signing and verification.

Falco deployed for real-time runtime anomaly detection.

OPA policies enforced no privileged containers.

Outcome:

Reduced vulnerabilities by 80% in three months.

Passed PCI-DSS compliance audit.

Incident response time dropped from 3 hours to 15 minutes.

9. Final Thoughts

Containerization is revolutionizing software development—but without security, it’s a double-edged sword. Manual processes can’t keep up with the scale and speed of modern CI/CD. Automating container security is the only way to ensure continuous delivery doesn’t become continuous risk.

DevOps teams must embrace security as code, automate relentlessly, and adopt tools that make security part of the development culture—not a bottleneck.

💡 Security is not a phase. It’s a mindset baked into every layer of your CI/CD pipeline.

Source:-https://www.powelltribune.com/ The Wyoming Department of Health knows it accidentally published the personal information of 164,000 residents on a public website […]

Source:-https://www.powelltribune.com/

The Wyoming Department of Health knows it accidentally published the personal information of 164,000 residents on a public website earlier this year. But it remains a mystery as to whether any bad actors accessed the data before the department discovered the mistake and took the files offline.

The roughly 54 files that were uploaded to GitHub.com contained names, dates of birth, addresses, some driver’s license numbers and results for COVID-19 and alcohol breath tests.

Between the data’s upload in January and deletion in March, roughly 13 IP addresses appear to have accessed the data in some form or fashion, Department of Health Interim Director Stefan Johansson said Thursday.

“We cannot determine who that was or if these were web crawlers that comb all websites basically all the time,” Johansson told the Legislature’s Joint Labor, Health and Social Services Committee. “That’s something that we don’t know.”

It’s possible that no one obtained a copy of the data before it was scrubbed from the internet. However, under federal regulations and the department’s policies, “we assume the worst and we act as if the worst had happened,” Johansson said.

If a malicious actor did obtain the data files, they could potentially use the information for “online targeting,” Johansson said, such as by trying to gain access to a person’s social media accounts or deploying some kind of phishing scam to obtain more sensitive and potentially lucrative information. The interim director noted that “the highly sensitive data” — such as Social Security numbers, insurance and financial information — “was not involved in this.”

For the roughly 164,000 people whose personal information was publicly exposed, the department is offering identity theft protection services and operating a phone line to field questions.

After the department publicly announced the breach, a scammer or group of scammers tried to capitalize, posing as the department in phone calls and trying to convince residents to give up their personal information. The department quickly issued a warning to the public.

“We tried to do our best to put out information … to make sure that hopefully they knew that we would never call and ask for that type of information, even after an event like this,” Johansson said.

As for how the data breach occurred, Johansson said the department had been using the website GitHub to manage and update computer code related to various public health data reporting requirements. However, when posting a long string of code, one analyst failed to include a certain “NOR function” that would have told the program to skip over the sensitive files, Johansson said. Without that function, the sensitive files were instead called and uploaded to GitHub’s public repository, he said.

The error “was absolutely inadvertent and accidental,” the interim director added. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the department threw a lot of work and a lot of employees at public health efforts — and in that environment, “you run the risk of making mistakes.”

“We’ve all equated it somewhat to wartime,” Johansson said, “and I think that’s part of the reason that you risk some quality measures slipping. And that’s certainly what happened here.”

Two employees were involved with the breach: One no longer works for the Department of Health, while the other “has received sanctions, additional training, and progessive disciplinary actions have been taken,” Johansson said.

Department of Health Director Mike Ceballos and state Chief Information Officer Gordon Knopp both resigned in the wake of the breach, though they did not announce whether their departures were directly related to the incident.

Although the breach was “certainly not the fault of the platform” — Johansson in fact made a point of praising the site for its help — he said the department is no longer using GitHub for any purposes. The department also reviewed and updated all of its privacy and security policies, including how often they train employees on best practices.

Source:-https://www.memuk.org/ While the promise of artificial intelligence transforming the manufacturing industry is not new, long-ongoing experimentation hasn’t yet led to […]

Source:-https://www.memuk.org/

While the promise of artificial intelligence transforming the manufacturing industry is not new, long-ongoing experimentation hasn’t yet led to widespread business benefits. Manufacturers remain in “pilot purgatory,” as Gartner reports that only 21% of companies in the industry have active AI initiatives in production.

However, new research from Google Cloud reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic may have spurred a significant increase in the use of AI and other digital enablers among manufacturers. According to our data—which polled more than 1,000 senior manufacturing executives across seven countries—76% have turned to digital enablers and disruptive technologies due to the pandemic such as data and analytics, cloud, and artificial intelligence (AI). And 66% of manufacturers who use AI in their day-to-day operations report that their reliance on AI is increasing.

In fact, Bryan Goodman, Director of Artificial Intelligence and Cloud, Ford Global Data & Insight and Analytics shares, “Our new relationship with Google will supercharge our efforts to democratize AI across our business, from the plant floor to vehicles to dealerships. We used to count the number of AI and machine learning projects at Ford. Now it’s so commonplace that it’s like asking how many people are using math. This includes an AI ecosystem that is fueled by data, and that powers a ‘digital network flywheel.’”

Moving from edge cases to mainstream business needs

Why are manufacturers now turning to AI in increasing numbers? Our research shows that companies who currently use AI in day-to-day operations are looking for assistance with business continuity (38%), helping make employees more efficient (38%), and to be helpful for employees overall (34%). It’s clear that AI/ML technology can augment manufacturing employees’ efforts, whether by providing prescriptive analytics like real-time guidance and training, flagging safety hazards, or detecting potential defects on the assembly line.

In terms of specific AI use cases called out by the research, two main areas emerged: quality control and supply chain optimization. In the quality control category, 39% of surveyed manufacturers who use AI in their day-to-day operations use it for quality inspection and 35% for product and/or production line quality checks. At Google Cloud, we often speak with manufacturers about AI for visual inspection of finished products. Using AI vision, production line workers can spend less time on repetitive product inspections and can instead focus on more complex tasks, such as root cause analysis.

In the supply chain optimization category, manufacturers said they tapped AI for supply chain management (36%), risk management (36%), and inventory management (34%).

In our day-to-day work, we’re seeing many manufacturers rethink their supply chains and operating models to better accommodate for the increased volatility that has been brought about by the pandemic and support the secular trend of consumers asking for increasingly individualized products. We’ll share more on deglobalization in the third installment of our manufacturing insights series.

AI use differs by geography, but not for the reasons you may think

The extent to which AI is already being used today varies quite strongly between geographies, according to our research. While 80% and 79% of manufacturers in Italy and Germany respectively report using AI in day-to-day operations, that percentage plummets in the United States (64%), Japan (50%) and Korea (39%).

It’s tempting to state this disparity is due to an “AI talent gap.” Although the most common barrier, just a quarter (23%) of manufacturers surveyed believe they don’t have the talent to properly leverage AI. Cost, too, does not appear to be a roadblock (21% of those surveyed). Rather, from our observations, the missing link appears to be having the right technology platform and tools to manage a production-grade AI pipeline. This is obviously the focus of our efforts and others in the space, as we believe the cloud can truly help the industry make a step change.

Looking ahead: The Golden Age of AI for manufacturing

Source:-https://www.financialexpress.com/

THE PANDEMIC HAS compelled enterprises to rapidly move their critical workload to the cloud to ensure seamless functioning of business. As cloud is gaining momentum, and enterprises are frantically looking for ways to optimise their network, storage and agility, edge computing has turned out to be the perfect solution.

To understand where edge computing fits in the whole spectrum of IT infrastructure, we need to begin with the basics— Understanding what actually is edge computing. “Edge computing” is a type of distributed architecture in which data processing occurs close to the source of data, that is, at the “edge” of the system. This approach reduces the need to bounce data back and forth between the cloud and device while maintaining consistent performance. This reduces latency in data transmission and computation, thereby enhancing agility.

With regards to infrastructure, edge computing is a network of local micro data centers for storage and processing purposes. At the same time, the central data centre oversees the proceedings and gets valuable insights into the local data processing. However, we need to be mindful that edge computing is a kind of expansion of cloud computing architecture— an optimised solution for decentralised infrastructure.

The ultimate purpose of edge computing is to bring compute, storage, and network services closer to endpoints and end users to improve overall application performance. Based on this knowledge, IT architects must identify and document instances where edge computing can address existing network performance problems.

How does edge computing work?
In traditional enterprise computing, data is produced at a user’s computer. That data is moved across a WAN such as the internet, through the corporate LAN, where the data is stored and worked upon by an enterprise application. Results of that work are then conveyed back to the end-user. However, if we consider the number of devices that are connected to a company’s server, also the volume of data it generates, it is far too much for a traditional IT infrastructure to accommodate.
So, IT architects have shifted focus from the central data centre to the logical edge of the infrastructure—taking storage and computing resources from the data centre and moving those resources to the point where the data is generated.

There are several reasons for the growing adoption of edge computing:

Due to emerging technologies such as IoT and IoB, data is being generated in real-time. Devices enabled by these technologies require a high response time and considerable bandwidth for proper operation.
Cloud computing is centralised. Transmitting and processing massive quantities of raw data puts a significant load on the network’s bandwidth.
Incessant movement of large quantities of data back and forth is beyond reasonable cost-effectiveness and leads to latency.
Processing data at the source and then sending valuable data to the centre is a more efficient solution.
As organisations move back to remote working models, we will witness wider adoption of edge computing as it empowers remote work infrastructure with greater computation and storage capabilities.

Source:-https://www.ciol.com/ 2020 has turned out to be a golden year for cloud computing. Covid-19 has made tech infrastructure companies find […]

Source:-https://www.ciol.com/

2020 has turned out to be a golden year for cloud computing. Covid-19 has made tech infrastructure companies find innovative ways to meet the accelerated demand for cloud-based offerings. Several existing factors have driven cloud transitions, and now they seem to have accelerated because of the Covid-19 crisis. Cloud spending has increased to 37% in the past year.

This trend is here to stay as the world is more towards virtual work. Despite lockdowns in various parts of the world, a Gartner Report estimated a rise of 19% in 2021 for cloud spending. In 2020, the Cloud Computing industry was valued at $371.4 Billion and is now estimated to reach a whopping $832.1 Billion by 2026 at a CAGR of 17.5%.

How is Cloud Computing helping businesses stay connected?
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, digital business transformations have entered a challenging phase. The sudden shutdown of offices, schools, SMEs have increased the demand for cloud services. With the lockdowns, there has been a steep increase in the use of video conferencing tools and virtual meeting software. This has led to a massive spike in demand for internet bandwidth. In such cases, cloud computing has been a saviour. It is easy to handle the unexpected spikes in bandwidth usage in a cloud computing scenario.

In many industries such as healthcare and finance, data is the primary asset. Managing and storage of data can be expensive when on-premise servers are chosen. In such scenarios, cloud computing is the best option. It provides access to online data backup and the scalability is high. But one must thoroughly assess the security risks involved and tackle them efficiently to avoid data loss or data leak.

Business collaboration earlier involved face-to-face interaction. These interactions proved critical in ensuring business objectives and large teams helped with these interactions. With the Covid-19 pandemic forcing millions of workers to work remotely, organizations are struggling to create the same office environment and engagement between team members. Cloud helps increase efficiency and also enhances productivity. It allows individuals to share or edit projects in real-time working from different locations and allows the teams to stay connected. Further, it is easier to provide the latest information, updates, developments of the project when organizations are working in a cloud environment. It also allows control over who has access to information ensuring information security.

Global Shift Toward Cloud Computing
In addition to the pandemic, the shift to the cloud has been a long-awaited one. Flexible consumption models like “Everything or Anything as a Service” (XaaS) have become increasingly popular. Cloud computing has enabled strategic shifts for many organizations across industries. With five times more growth forecast for cloud computing models by 2026, organizations opting for these cloud-driven shifts can definitely see more aggregation at lower costs, greater financial predictability and enhanced customer and team collaborations.

Cloud Migration Strategy
Cloud adoption has been moving at a rapid speed. Thus, organizations need to keep up with the pace and ensure the application of information security. Enterprises must understand that cloud migration is not just about moving to the cloud. It is continuous reinvention to check for ways to achieve cost efficiency as well as create new opportunities. It is critical to follow a well-planned approach and adopt cloud migration in a phased manner so that business stays uninterrupted.

As enterprises move towards cloud migration, cost duplication must be kept in check since organizations pay for both cloud and legacy systems as well as cloud synchronization costs must be added too. Many key players provide cost-effective cloud environments which help organizations achieve cost efficiency.

The cloud is now more than just an efficient storage option. Cloud as a platform generates data and provides innovative solutions to leverage that data. More businesses are opting for the cloud to drive innovation, become more agile and save money. Enabling cloud computing has become a necessity for the smooth functioning of the organization than a luxury. It’s no more the question of choice.

Cloud computing is now very much at the centre of any organization’s strategy. That trend, is here to stay despite the steepest economic contraction.

Source:-https://devops.com/

PractiTest, a test management platform provider, published a report today that suggests professional application testers have become more adept at working within DevOps workflows.

The annual survey of more than 1,000 application testing professionals finds that 80% of all application testing within organizations is being done by test engineers, test leads, testers and automation testers. A full 92% of survey respondents also noted they are working within the context of an agile methodology, while 42% cited DevOps specifically. Half of respondents said they work within the framework of a continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform.

Significantly, more than half of respondents (59%) said testing is shifting left within their organization, but only a third (33%) said programmers participate in the testing process.

PractiTest CEO Yaniv Iny said that level of DevOps inclusion suggests that, rather than shifting testing completely left on to the shoulders of application developers, a more nuanced approach to application testing is taking hold as professional testers learn to work within the sprints that make up a DevOps workflow. A full 90% of respondents said testing has become more automated within their quality assurance (QA) processes.

By now, most application testers have come to terms with automation and, increasingly, AI, said Iny. The assumption now is that large swaths of the testing process will be automated, Iny added. A full 97% of respondents said that functional testing automation was either important or very important for them to succeed, while 96% said test automation patterns, principles and practices are also critical.

Usage of behavior-driven development (BDD) as a testing model has also increased, with 27% of organizations now employing it to go beyond simply testing functions.

However, the survey also found that, instead of automation decreasing the size of testing teams, those teams are getting larger. The number of organizations with 16 or more testers increased by 10% to 34% compared to a year ago. That suggests organizations are launching either more complex application development projects or launching multiple projects at the same time as they embrace digital business transformation initiatives, Iny said.

The survey found nearly 70% of respondents have at least five years of experience. Nearly three-quarters (71%) of respondents reported that their income was not affected by the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, nearly half of respondents (54%) reported that they were concerned about job stability, an increase of more than 30% from a year ago.

The pandemic did change the way testers acquire new skills. The number of testers reporting that they attended online conferences, meetups and seminars increased to just under half (49.5%), up from 40.5% in 2019. Participation in online communities and forums grew to 44%, while only a third of respondents receiving any kind of formal training.

Testing professionals with five to 10 years of experience earned an average salary of $89,000 in North America, which compares to $76,000 in Australia/New Zealand, the survey also found.

Application testing as a distinct discipline doesn’t appear to be fading away anytime soon. Rather, organizations appear to be investing even more in testing to deliver higher-quality applications.

Source:-https://devops.com/ A survey of 521 attendees at a recent online Future of Salesforce DevOps Summit event hosted by Gearset, a […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

A survey of 521 attendees at a recent online Future of Salesforce DevOps Summit event hosted by Gearset, a provider of a continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform for Salesforce developers, found just under half (47%) of respondents now release software at least multiple times a week, with another 29% releasing software weekly or biweekly.

More than half of respondents (52%) also noted they now can deploy software in less than an hour.

Gearset CEO Kevin Boyle said the survey suggested the level of DevOps maturity among developers building applications on top of the Salesforce software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform is increasing rapidly. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations embraced SaaS platforms to accelerate their digital business transformation initiatives rather than building entire applications from scratch.

However, the biggest benefit cited by survey respondents was not the ability to release applications faster, but rather the improvements to application quality (77%), followed by increased productivity (69%) and enhanced collaboration (46%). Other benefits cited included reduced complexity thanks to automation; increased agility; more reliable releases and time and cost savings.

Overall, the survey identifies source code control, CI/CD, unit testing, change monitoring and backups of metadata and data as being the most widely implemented DevOps capabilities that have been adopted. Over the next 12 months, capabilities that will see the most increased adoption among survey respondents include CI/CD, static code analysis and sandbox seeding with data.

Survey respondents said their top obstacles to adoption of DevOps are ramp-up time, followed by difficulties adopting source control and a perceived steep learning curve. For many organizations that have adopted Salesforce, the intimidation factor when it comes to adopting DevOps best practices is still fairly high, Boyle noted.

Most recently, Gearset added a free training platform, dubbed DevOps Launchpad, that employs gamification techniques to make DevOps more accessible to developers. Topics covered include version control fundamentals, Git branching strategies and Salesforce backups.

Gearset counts McKesson, Zillow, Traction on Demand, Intercom, Accenture, IBM and Johnson & Johnson among its customers. It’s not clear to what degree appreciation for DevOps has risen among smaller companies. However, as the number of custom applications deployed as extensions to the Salesforce platform increases, it is apparent that manual processes for building and deploying applications will not scale. The Salesforce platform itself is uniquely constructed using a set of objects and tables that generally lead organizations to adopt a DevOps platform built for that environment. However, it is possible to build and deploy applications using a DevOps platform designed for building and deploying applications that might need to span multiple platforms. Those applications would be integrated with the Salesforce platform at an application programming interface (API) level.

Regardless of how custom applications are built and deployed, it’s clear Salesforce platforms are becoming more widely used in enterprise IT environments. Each DevOps team will need to determine how best to integrate those platforms within the context of their overall DevOps strategy.

Source:-https://devops.com/

VMware today rolled out a series of updates to its automation and monitoring portfolio as part of an ongoing effort to simplify management of highly distributed IT environments.

Updates to the VMware vRealize Cloud automation portfolio include VMware vRealize Automation 8.4’s tighter integration with the open source Salt automation framework the company gained by acquiring SaltStack last year, in addition to a range of tools for provisioning and governing instances of VMware software running on Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and VMware Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

There is also a set of tools to enable organizations running NSX network virtualization software for vSphere to migrate to NSX-T, an instance of network virtualization software that can be deployed anywhere.

VMware vRealize Operations, meanwhile, is being updated to support a total of 57 AWS services along with the ability to predict the cost of deploying VMware Cloud on AWS. The latter capability includes tracking potential savings generated by powering off idle or unused virtual machines as well as snapshots, orphaned disks and oversized virtual machines. There are also now ten additional dashboards for tracking various costs, including return on investment, total cost of ownership and potential cost savings. IT teams can also more easily track capacity utilization trends on AWS.

VMware is adding support for the open source Telegraf Agent to enable IT teams to collect metrics from any platform, in addition to providing an update to VMware vRealize Log Insight 8.4 and vRealize Log Insight Cloud that enables these monitoring tools to store data collected from multiple cloud services more efficiently. IT teams will also be able to collect logs from both Microsoft Azure and AWS.

Finally, VMware is expanding its network monitoring tools to provide greater visibility across multiple clouds.

Fidelma Russo, senior vice president and general manager for cloud services at VMware, said the rate at which IT teams are consuming the software-as-a-service (SaaS) editions of VMware management and observability tools or full-blown managed services has increased sharply since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as IT teams managed on-premises and cloud instances of VMware software from home.

It’s not clear what percentage of VMware’s installed base are now consuming the company’s automation and monitoring tools, but as the number of VMware instances deployed on public clouds increases alongside on-premises IT environments, so, too, do the management challenges. The choice IT teams generally have to make is deciding between automation and observability tools that are optimized for a specific platform versus adopting frameworks that work more broadly. With the acquisition of Salt and support for Telgraf, it is apparent VMware is moving to expand the reach of its management portfolio beyond its own software.

In the meantime, IT teams are not only being asked to manage more complex IT environments, but the expectation that, through automation, they will be able to more effectively implement cost controls. This is happening at a time when many organizations have not been quite so sensitive to the total cost of IT. The challenge, of course, is those organizations are being asked to spend money on automation today in the hopes of spending less because of it tomorrow.

Source:-https://www.analyticsinsight.net/ Microsoft, Google, and AWS are collaborating with pharma firms to develop drugs fast & cheaply with AI and Cloud […]

Source:-https://www.analyticsinsight.net/

Microsoft, Google, and AWS are collaborating with pharma firms to develop drugs fast & cheaply with AI and Cloud Computing.
Hospitals and health care providers are using cloud service and AI for digital transformation. COVID-19 pandemic has seen the rapid adoption of telemedicine and healthcare chatbots that use artificial intelligence and machine learning. To further the course of digital transformation, pharmaceutical companies are employing the cloud to polish their business operations in fundamental ways.

This is called computational drug discovery.
It uses a combination of cloud computing and AI to make the process of drug development faster and cheaper. Big drug companies are taking complete advantage of the advancements in artificial intelligence and the computational capabilities of the cloud to test this new method,

Many pharma companies are using this tech-driven approach to develop traditional medications along with new categories of drugs that work at the DNA and RNA level to stop diseases. Hyperscale cloud providers like AWS, Google, and Microsoft are vital for this approach.

Moderna’s Biological Software
Cloud provider AWS is a significant element in the drug research, development, and production processes at Moderna. The company is developing a new class of treatments using mRNA that uses instructions in DNA to build the proteins in human cells. mRNA medicines can inform the human body to build certain proteins that treat or prevent an illness. Moderna’s mRNA platform uses the cloud-based computational capacity to run a variety of algorithms that design individual mRNA sequences. Moderna uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud with Auto Scaling, Amazon EC2 Spot Instances, the Amazon Relational Database Service, and Amazon Simple Queue Service.

With AWS, the company is able to shorten the time required to advance drug candidates to clinical studies and create treatments that wouldn’t have been possible until a few years ago.

Microsoft’s Role In Drug Development
In 2017, Microsoft announced a technology development alliance with a global biopharmaceutical service organization, Parexel. The biopharma company combined Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure with its clinical and regulatory technology domain expertise.

Prior to this stint, Microsoft was an early-stage funder of Cloud Pharmaceuticals, a drug company that was started in 2011 with technology developed by Duke University. Their tech platform, Quantum Molecular Design, uses a combination of AI, advanced quantum chemistry, and cloud computing to find out the best candidates for new small-molecule treatments.

Using Artificial Intelligence To Understand Human Protein-Folding
One of the oldest companies in the industry, Alphabet, is also using artificial intelligence to accelerate its drug development process. After acquiring the London-based startup DeepMind, Alphabet aims to tackle some of the most pressing real-world challenges that include slow drug development.

The DeepMind team uses artificial intelligence to understand protein folding, which guides almost every function of our bodies. When proteins become tangled and deformed, it has the potential to cause various diseases like diabetes, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. With accurate protein structure models, researchers can use practical applications of AI to speed up the processes to develop drugs for many such diseases.

In 2018, one of DeepMind’s products, AlphaFold, entered into a protein-folding competition. Researchers from all over the world were in the audience where teams predicted the structures of proteins from lists of specific amino acids, which were sent to the teams every few days over several months. AlphaFold defeated 97 other participants. AphaFold’s algorithm predicted the most accurate structure for 25 out of 43 proteins.

Predicting protein-folding is a complex process because the human body can produce billions of different proteins. Cloud computing’s capabilities are evident as it helps researchers and pharmaceutical companies to analyze and understand vast volumes of data to come up with new treatments.

Source:-https://www.itpro.co.uk

VMware has announced it’ll continue allowing employees to work from home to promote inclusion and help the environment.

As part of its Future of Work initiative, VMware staff will continue to choose to work from home or in the office. Rich Lang, senior vice president of human resources, said staff members would be able to choose permanent remote work, “flexible” working, working near a VMware office, or working full-time from a VMware office.

Employees can work from any location that accelerates their productivity and advances their personal and professional goals during and after the pandemic,” he added.

Lang said planning for the initiative was well underway before COVID-19 and the pandemic accelerated efforts.

“As our employees demonstrated throughout the pandemic, work location does not dictate success. The choice and flexibility that form the cornerstones of this new distributed workforce model mirror the choice and flexibility we provide to our customers,” he said.

He said the company has discovered that most people prefer to do focused work at home or outside of the office. In contrast, campus offices are better suited for collaboration and community. This has led the company to base its Future of Work program around three things.

The first is to build up a diverse team with access to the resources and support they need to be productive in whichever work environment they choose. These resources and support will include expanded benefits and well-being programs, and reimbursements for home office equipment.

The second will see workplaces become collaboration hubs to tackle climate issues by decreasing the need to come into an office every day.

“Removing the need to commute to an office and reducing carbon emissions in our day-to-day operations has significant impact on our sustainability commitments. This means moving from spaces that prioritize individual work to environments that foster teamwork, innovation, and experiences,” said Lang.

The third idea is to increase diversity and inclusion by decreasing the need for staff to relocate or travel.

“We are leveling the playing field and ensuring equity and inclusion of all employees by providing every employee equal access to support systems, regardless of where they may choose to work,” said Lang.

Lang added that emerging technologies, like augmented reality and virtual reality, will play a key role in bridging distances and shaping a more dynamic and creative workforce.

“Accessibility to a broader talent pool and flexible work will shape a more diverse VMware and help achieve net-zero carbon emissions for operations,” said Lang.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com

CAMBRIDGE, England–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Marking its fifth year examining the global tech community’s practices around DevOps and database development, Redgate’s 2021 State of Database DevOps Report will be unlike any other before it. In a year of unprecedented firsts with a global pandemic, IT professionals and database administrators evolved their database development practices in 2020. As DevOps adoption continues to rise, with 30% of respondents saying they had adopted DevOps practices in 2016 compared to 68% in the last report, numbers are expected to rise further to meet the new demands of remote work environments.

With the survey now open for participation until midnight GMT on December 15, Redgate will donate $1 to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for every submission received.

Redgate is marking the approach toward 2021 with notable achievements in its mission to provide IT teams with database DevOps tools and solutions that meet the most stringent compliance requirements, including:

Inclusion in the Gartner Hype Cycle for Agile and DevOps, 2020, with Redgate cited as a Sample Vendor in the Continuous Compliance Automation category. Research from Redgate’s 2020 State of Database DevOps Report pointed to compliance as a growing concern for companies. For Redgate, mention in the Gartner report strengthened the company’s commitment to supporting customers with a DevOps-focused approach to the database to balance the accelerated delivery that comes with DevOps, alongside the need to adhere to regulatory compliance.

The acquisition of the popular open source database migration tool, Flyway, was finalized in 2020, which meant that database development teams could better automate deployments across multiple platforms to ensure faster delivery without compromising on code quality. As experts on developing a portfolio of SQL Server tools, the Flyway acquisition pointed to a growing trend of companies adopting multiple databases. By bringing it all under one roof, Redgate could invest heavily in Flyway to secure the future of the community version of the tool, expand its portfolio to new markets, and solidify the company as experts on database DevOps.

In addition to Flyway, Redgate saw major product updates and launches this year, including SQL Monitor version 11, which gives IT teams the ability to monitor all of their servers, databases and instances, whether on-premises or in the cloud, all on one screen. With hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments growing fast amid the pandemic, SQL Monitor V. 11 allows database professionals to maintain the performance of their servers, wherever they are hosted. To address the growing need for sensitive data protection, Redgate released Data Masker 7.1, which masks sensitive data across database tables when moving information into production so developers can protect critical customer information, but still maintain the speed of delivery that customers expect.

Many of these updates were based on the knowledge that came from Redgate’s annual State of Database DevOps Report and State of Database Monitoring Report, which saw rising rates of adoption for both DevOps and automation, while highlighting the need for more advanced database monitoring and security solutions to manage the surge of cloud deployments and longer-term remote work environments, respectively. As business environments continue to adopt new strategies for 2021, Redgate remains ready to provide tools and support to best fit the changing needs of IT teams everywhere.

“2020 was a challenging year for every IT department, and I commend our Redgate employees for continuing to find those silver linings in difficult situations,” said Redgate CEO Simon Galbraith. “We’ve increased our support to customers, including offering free online technical courses, our staff launched a Coding Club to keep kids engaged away from classrooms, and we all celebrated together virtually for Redgate’s twenty-first birthday. We truly have the best team in the business and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished this year and looking forward to a brighter 2021.”..

Redgate makes ingeniously simple software used by over 800,000 IT professionals around the world and is the leading Database DevOps solutions provider. Redgate’s philosophy is to design highly usable, reliable tools which elegantly solve the problems developers and DBAs face every day and help them to adopt compliant database DevOps. As well as streamlining database development and preventing the database being a bottleneck, this helps organizations introduce data protection by design and by default. As a result, more than 100,000 companies use Redgate tools, including 91% of those in the Fortune 100.

An overview of how cloud computing is reshaping K-12 education, covering key service models (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS), application areas, regional dynamics, and the accelerating impact of COVID-19 on adoption.

Cloud Computing in K-12 Education: Market Landscape, Segments, and Growth Drivers

Cloud computing has moved from a peripheral IT consideration to a foundational infrastructure layer for K-12 school districts and education ministries worldwide. The shift accelerated sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced institutions to deliver remote instruction at scale and exposed the limitations of on-premises, hardware-dependent systems. This article examines the structure of the K-12 cloud computing market, the service models driving adoption, key application areas, and the regional dynamics shaping growth.

Why Cloud Computing Matters for K-12 Education

K-12 institutions face a distinctive set of constraints: tight budgets, limited in-house IT staff, large and geographically dispersed user bases (students, teachers, administrators), and strict data-privacy regulations such as FERPA in the United States and GDPR in Europe. Cloud platforms address these pressures by shifting capital expenditure to predictable operational expenditure, enabling rapid scaling during peak demand (such as standardized testing periods or sudden remote-learning mandates), and centralizing security and compliance controls.

The pandemic served as a stress test that accelerated multi-year digital-transformation roadmaps into months. Districts that had already adopted cloud-based learning management systems, video conferencing, and collaboration tools were able to continue instruction with far less disruption than those relying on on-premises infrastructure.

Core Cloud Service Models in K-12

Three foundational service models structure the K-12 cloud market:

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS is the dominant model in K-12 because it requires no infrastructure management from the district. Learning management systems (LMS), student information systems (SIS), assessment platforms, and productivity suites (such as Google Workspace for Education and Microsoft 365 Education) are delivered as fully managed applications. Districts pay per seat or per district and rely on the vendor for uptime, security patching, and feature updates.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS is used by larger districts and state education agencies that need to run custom workloads, host data warehouses, or migrate legacy applications without owning physical hardware. Providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud supply virtualized compute, storage, and networking resources on demand. Districts retain responsibility for the operating system and application layer.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS is primarily used by education technology developers and larger districts with software-development capabilities. It provides managed runtime environments, databases, and middleware so development teams can build and deploy custom educational applications without managing the underlying infrastructure. Examples include building custom analytics dashboards on top of a cloud data platform or developing adaptive-learning tools that integrate with existing SIS data.

Key Application Areas

Cloud adoption in K-12 spans several distinct functional areas:

Training and Consulting: Professional development for teachers and administrators, including cloud-hosted content libraries, virtual instructor-led training, and vendor-delivered implementation consulting for new platforms.

Integration and Migration: Connecting disparate systems (SIS, LMS, assessment tools, finance systems) via cloud-based APIs and iPaaS (integration platform as a service) solutions, and migrating on-premises workloads to cloud environments with minimal disruption to the school year.

Support and Maintenance: Managed support services, helpdesk platforms, automated monitoring, and patch management delivered as cloud services, reducing the burden on small district IT teams.

Regional Dynamics

Cloud adoption in K-12 education varies significantly by region, driven by infrastructure maturity, government policy, and budget availability:

North America

The United States and Canada represent the most mature K-12 cloud market. Federal programs (such as E-Rate in the US, which subsidizes broadband and cloud services for schools) and wide availability of high-speed internet have driven high SaaS penetration. Major vendors including Google, Microsoft, and Instructure (Canvas) have significant installed bases across public school districts.

Europe

European adoption is growing but shaped by stricter data-sovereignty and GDPR requirements. Many districts require that student data remain within national or EU borders, which has driven demand for region-specific cloud deployments and local-language platforms. Publicly funded national education platforms exist in several countries as alternatives or complements to commercial cloud services.

Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific is one of the fastest-growing regions due to large student populations in China, India, and Southeast Asia, increasing government investment in ed-tech, and rapid smartphone and tablet penetration that makes cloud-delivered mobile learning viable. China’s market is largely served by domestic platforms, while markets such as Australia, Japan, and South Korea show strong adoption of international SaaS products.

Middle East, Africa, and South America

These regions present significant long-term opportunity alongside infrastructure challenges. Government-led digitization initiatives in the Middle East (particularly GCC countries) are funding cloud deployments in national school systems. In Africa and parts of South America, connectivity gaps remain a barrier, but mobile-first cloud solutions and offline-capable applications are helping extend reach.

Impact of COVID-19 on K-12 Cloud Adoption

The pandemic compressed adoption timelines in ways that are likely to have lasting effects. Districts that purchased cloud-based collaboration and video tools as emergency measures have since integrated them into standard operating procedures. IT teams that rapidly migrated workloads to the cloud during lockdowns gained institutional knowledge that makes future migrations less daunting. Budget reallocation from physical infrastructure to cloud services accelerated in many districts, and the appetite for hybrid and fully remote learning options has permanently expanded the addressable use case for cloud platforms in education.

At the same time, the pandemic exposed the digital divide: students without reliable home broadband or devices could not benefit from cloud-delivered instruction regardless of platform availability. This has made connectivity and device equity a parallel policy priority alongside cloud adoption in many jurisdictions.

Considerations for K-12 IT and DevOps Teams

For technical teams supporting K-12 environments, cloud adoption introduces both opportunities and responsibilities:

Identity and access management: Federated identity (SSO via SAML or OIDC) is essential for managing thousands of student and staff accounts across dozens of SaaS applications. Automating provisioning and de-provisioning through tools like Google Admin SDK or Microsoft Entra ID reduces administrative overhead and limits orphaned accounts.

Data governance: Student data flowing through multiple cloud platforms must be governed under applicable privacy regulations. Maintaining a clear data map of which vendors process which categories of student information is a compliance baseline, not an advanced practice.

Cost management: Cloud costs can scale unexpectedly during high-demand periods. Implementing budget alerts, rightsizing compute resources, and auditing unused SaaS licenses are standard FinOps practices that apply directly to K-12 environments.

Vendor lock-in risk: Reliance on a single vendor’s ecosystem (for example, building entirely within Google Workspace or Microsoft 365) can simplify administration but creates switching costs. Where possible, choosing platforms with open APIs and standard data-export formats preserves future flexibility.

Security posture: Shared responsibility models mean the district retains responsibility for user access controls, data classification, and endpoint security even when the application is vendor-managed. Regular access reviews and phishing-resistant MFA for staff accounts are foundational controls.

Summary

Cloud computing in K-12 education is a well-established and growing market driven by the need for scalable, cost-effective, and remotely accessible digital infrastructure. SaaS remains the dominant service model due to its low administrative overhead, while IaaS and PaaS serve larger or more technically capable institutions. COVID-19 accelerated adoption across all regions and made cloud readiness a visible policy priority. For IT and DevOps practitioners in the education sector, understanding the market structure and the specific governance, security, and cost-management challenges of K-12 environments is essential for designing systems that serve students and educators reliably and responsibly.

By Organisation Size

Large Enterprises — typically heavy Splunk or Datadog users; high data volumes; often mix open-source and commercial tooling.

SMEs — growing adoption of lighter-weight SaaS tools that offer generous free tiers and simpler pricing models.

Regional Breakdown

The market research report segments the market by the following geographies:

North America — historically the largest market, driven by high cloud adoption, large technology sector, and mature DevOps practices.

Europe — significant growth influenced by GDPR compliance requirements, which have increased demand for audit logging and data governance tooling.

Asia-Pacific — fastest-growing region, fuelled by rapid digital transformation, e-commerce growth, and expanding cloud infrastructure from hyperscalers.

South America — emerging market with growing adoption among financial services and retail sectors.

Middle East & Africa — early-stage adoption, with government digitisation initiatives acting as a catalyst.

Drivers of Market Growth

Several structural trends support sustained investment in log analysis tooling:

Distributed architectures — microservices, serverless functions, and containers generate orders-of-magnitude more log events than monolithic applications, making manual analysis impossible and automated tooling essential.

Regulatory compliance — frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and SOX mandate audit trails, access logging, and defined retention periods.

Security threat detection — logs remain a primary source of evidence for detecting intrusions, lateral movement, and data exfiltration; SIEM and log analysis are converging.

Remote work and cloud migration — accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the shift away from on-premises infrastructure increased reliance on cloud-native logging services.

Observability maturity — engineering organisations are maturing from reactive log searching toward proactive anomaly detection, log-based alerting, and correlation across the three pillars of observability: logs, metrics, and traces.

Competitive Dynamics and Vendor Strategies

Competition in log analysis software centres on several differentiating dimensions:

Ingestion cost and pricing transparency — log volumes grow faster than budgets; vendors that offer predictable, volume-independent pricing (e.g., Coralogix’s data-per-unit model) have a competitive advantage over pure per-GB models.

Query performance at scale — the ability to search billions of log lines in seconds is a hard technical differentiator; Splunk’s SPL engine and Datadog’s indexed log search are common benchmarks.

Ecosystem integration — native integrations with Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, Azure, CI/CD pipelines, and alerting tools reduce operational friction.

AI/ML-assisted anomaly detection — reducing alert fatigue by surfacing only statistically significant deviations from baseline log patterns.

Open standards — adoption of OpenTelemetry for log collection is increasing vendor-agnostic portability and reducing lock-in concerns.

What to Evaluate When Choosing a Log Analysis Platform

When assessing log analysis tools for your organisation, consider the following criteria:

Data volume and retention requirements — estimate your daily ingestion volume and required retention window; these two numbers drive cost more than almost any other factor.

Query language and usability — your team will spend significant time searching logs; evaluate whether the query language (SPL, LogQL, KQL, SQL-like, etc.) fits your engineers’ skills.

Alerting and on-call integration — log-based alerts should integrate natively with PagerDuty, Opsgenie, Slack, or your existing incident workflow.

Compliance and data residency — confirm the vendor’s data processing agreements, SOC 2 certification, and region availability if you operate under GDPR or similar.

Open-source vs. managed trade-offs — self-hosted Graylog or Grafana Loki offer cost control but require operational overhead; managed SaaS tools shift that burden to the vendor.

Correlation with metrics and traces — full observability requires connecting log events to service metrics and distributed traces; prefer platforms that support all three or integrate cleanly with those that do.

Summary

The log analysis software market is a well-established and actively expanding segment of the broader observability and IT operations tooling industry. Driven by cloud migration, distributed architectures, compliance pressure, and security requirements, organisations of all sizes are increasing investment in structured log management. The competitive landscape includes open-source projects, specialist SaaS vendors, and broad observability platforms — giving engineering teams a wide range of options at different price points and capability levels. Selecting the right tool requires careful evaluation of data volume, query needs, compliance obligations, and integration requirements rather than relying solely on analyst market-share rankings.
