Source:-https://cloudcomputing-news.net/ SaaS (software as a service) is not a new term and has shown continued adoption and growth year on […]

Source:-https://cloudcomputing-news.net/

SaaS (software as a service) is not a new term and has shown continued adoption and growth year on year since the term first appeared fifteen years ago, with its commonality and mass adoption only growing over time. With its innate scalability and flexibility, SaaS took advantage of the new public cloud market. Today we find ourselves at a time where SaaS is taking over the cloud computing market and according to Bloomberg, public cloud platforms, business services, and applications (SaaS) will all grow at a 9% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) between 2020 and 2023.

COVID has accelerated this mindset: we witnessed an enforced change when remote flexibility and agility moved to the top of the urgency list. Look at the lightning speed of adoption of Zoom, MS Teams and Google Hangouts; the traditional barriers of time, procurement and lengthy evaluations went out of the window.

As a cloud advocate myself, I have been closely working with a wide range of clients of varying sizes and industry sectors over the past fifteen years and have seen the challenges faced when attempting to standardise and bring consistency to their technology estate. Typically, a SaaS offering fits certain needs, but commonly falls short where traditional on-network needs apply. Thus, organisations compromise by either mixing solutions to meet the objective or through living with limitations of the chosen vendor, be they on premise or SaaS.

For example, in the sphere of data protection, a SaaS solution fits well for distributed data instances such as cloud systems, but for a large on premises database you could be facing a longer restore time – not ideal for those all-important RPO (Recovery Point Objective) or RTO (Recovery Time Objectives) numbers.

We are on an already-proven journey encompassing a hybrid and multi cloud world. Organisations are on a journey of transformation with applications and data residing in a mixed local device, centralised on network and in the cloud environment – combining new tech with an existing stack. The decision for a new data protection solution today needs to acknowledge and encompass all of these options effectively.

Vendors who acknowledge and support customers in this journey rather than addressing singular camps will become go-to partners, and essential solutions.

From the edge, to the cloud, to the data centre…
It is this understanding and customer focus that has led to Commvault’s recent innovations (and some might say reinvention) in the data protection space. Commvault was one of the first vendors to understand that the market is moving towards SaaS, (IDC now reports that DPaaS is the fastest growing segment in the market) as they launched their SaaS data protection portfolio Metallic in 2019. In the last 12 months, Metallic’s pace of innovation and geographical expansion has accelerated – the benefits of being part of a company that has been a leader in data protection for the past 25 years.

Customers benefit from what Commvault calls “the power of AND”. This meaning a solution set that addresses the data spread in existence at most organisations from cloud applications, remote devices and importantly addressing the need to encompass legacy on premise data, even in volume! So, you can opt for one vendor that enables you to manage and protect your data stores across all the key variants in the most appropriate manner for each, whilst retaining one holistic, unified view.

An enterprise is now able to backup large on-premise data stores alongside in the cloud data from a flexible delivery model offered from appliance with Hyperscale X, Metallic SaaS or as a managed service gives the customer the best of all worlds. Metallic’s unique architecture provides all the benefits of SaaS, but by leveraging an on-premises storage target to back up and recover from, it eliminates any issues of poor performance – flexibility at scale.

Commvault’s close partnership with Microsoft leverages a powerful message to the market, with broad singular coverage for your data in Office 365, wmail, MS Teams, OneDrive, Project, Exchange, SharePoint, SQL and Active Directory. Adding to this is their announced further expansion of the Metallic SaaS portfolio to include all new Metallic Dynamics 365 Backup. With Metallic Dynamics 365 Backup, the Metallic portfolio now supports all three Microsoft clouds: Dynamics, Office 365, and Azure. All on top of wider support including Salesforce, Oracle, Microsoft and SAP data stores. Commvault is accelerating its innovation, delivering enterprise-grade software-as-a-service (SaaS) to customers of all sizes across their core data platforms.

Source:-https://blocksandfiles.com Commvault has updated its new DR software with recovery automation for VMware workloads. The upgrade also sees Commvault Disaster […]

Source:-https://blocksandfiles.com

Commvault has updated its new DR software with recovery automation for VMware workloads.

The upgrade also sees Commvault Disaster Recovery gain orchestration to, from and between on-premises and Azure and AWS environments. The orchestration can be within zones or across regions, and features simple cross-cloud migration support. It seems reasonable that Commvault will in due course add Google Cloud support.

ESG senior analyst Christophe Bertrand gave his thumbs up to the upgrade: “Commvault Disaster Recovery’s multiple cloud targets and speedy cross-cloud conversions make it extremely compelling. With everything going on in the world today, a true disaster could be right around the corner for any company. It’s critical to have enterprise multi-cloud tools in place to mitigate data loss and automate recovery operations immediately.”

The competition between DR specialist Zerto, which recently moved into backup, and data protector Commvault, which recently moved into DR, is hotting up. Cohesity has also moved into automated DR with its SiteContinuity offering.

Commvault released Commvault Disaster Recovery in July. Its automated failover and failback provide verifiable recoverability and reporting for monitoring and compliance. The software enables continuous data replication with the automated DR capabilities, capable of sub-minute Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs), along with near-zero Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).

Commvault cites additional benefits for the software such as cloud migration, integration with storage replication, ransomware protection, smart app validation in a sandbox, and instant mounts for DevOps with data masking. The latter feature moves it into the copy data management area, competing with Actifio, Catalogic, Cohesity, Delphix and others.

Source:-https://www.sdxcentral.com Cloudian and VMware, along with its cloud provider partners, teamed up to provide free ransomware protection to health care […]

Source:-https://www.sdxcentral.com

Cloudian and VMware, along with its cloud provider partners, teamed up to provide free ransomware protection to health care organizations. The offers come as hackers turn up the attacks against researchers and hospitals already hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the program, VMware’s Cloud Provider partners — there are some 35,000 of them globally — can sign up with Cloudian to access its free software. Once enrolled, the service providers get access to a 50 terabyte (TB), year-long license for Cloudian’s object storage software. This includes Cloudian’s government-certified Object Lock technology that protects stored data from ransomware tampering by making it immutable. Cloud providers can then offer free ransomware protection to their health care customers for a year.

“Everyone is aware of the urgency of keeping health care providers and researchers going right now, and the ransomware threat is something that we saw as being an enormous, horrible thing to have to deal with in the midst of everything else that is going on,” Cloudian CMO Jon Toor said.

Ransomware Hits Health Care Hard
Cloudian, citing Emsisoft research, says 764 U.S. health care providers were hit by ransomware last year, costing, on average, $8.1 million per incident.

Of course, these attacks have grown during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, in June, the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine paid some of a $1.14 million ransom demand to regain access to the encrypted servers. More recently, a woman died after a ransomware attack hit a German hospital and crashed its IT systems.

Last month, the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned of an “increased and imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and health care providers” including ransomware attacks, with at least one report saying as many as 20 medical facilities had been hit by the recent wave of ransomware.

“We’ve seen a tremendous uptick in attacks in that sector,” Toor said, noting the FBI and other agencies’ warning. “So that’s when we put this together with VMware as a way of helping out and giving people a way to protect themselves quickly at no additional cost.”

VMware Cloud Provider Partners
Green Cloud Technologies, a VMware cloud service provider partner, is already taking advantage of this partnership and now offers U.S.-based health care providers 50 TB of its Secure Object Storage powered by Cloudian for one year at no charge.

Green Cloud works with about 300 managed service providers across the U.S., and their customers have been requesting ransomware protection services like this, Green Cloud CEO Keith Coker said.

“Twenty-four months ago, backups were sufficient to thwart ransomware, but attackers now aren’t just reaching into production environments and encrypting that data, not they are reaching into backup environments and encrypting that data to the point where backups by themselves are no longer a sufficient solution,” Coker said. “The majority of customers that are on our platform that this would be relative to are small [medical] practices, and we do have a couple of partners that deal with research firms. And we have seen an uptick in organizations being exposed to ransomware where they really don’t have the protection to restore and recover.”

Cloudian Object Lock
The key to restoring and recovering systems and data lies in Cloudian’s Object Lock technology. This is part of its scalable HyperStore object storage platform. Cloudian provides WORM (write once read many) storage though Object Lock, and this makes the data immutable, thus preventing malware from encrypting it and locking the organization out.

“The backup software applies the Object Lock policies, and what that does it prevent the data from being changed or deleted for a specific period of time,” Toor said. “It’s like a time lock on a bank vault.”

Plus, it’s automated. Cloudian works with backup software provider partners including Veeam and Commvault “to manage the Object Lock policies so it all happens automatically behind the scenes,” Toor added.
