Here’s a structured and detailed guide addressing each of your questions about Cloud Orchestration: 1. Main Purpose of Cloud Orchestration […]

Here’s a structured and detailed guide addressing each of your questions about Cloud Orchestration:

1. Main Purpose of Cloud Orchestration

The primary purpose of Cloud Orchestration is to automate, coordinate, and manage complex cloud operations across multiple systems, services, and environments. Instead of handling resources manually, orchestration ensures that workflows—such as provisioning, scaling, networking, monitoring, and security—are executed in a consistent and repeatable way.

👉 In short: It makes cloud operations automated, efficient, and less error-prone.

2. Why You Should Consider Using Cloud Orchestration

You should consider Cloud Orchestration if you:

Want to reduce operational overhead by automating repetitive tasks.

Need faster deployments and continuous delivery in DevOps pipelines.

Operate in multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud environments and need centralized control.

Require cost optimization by automatically scaling resources up or down.

Aim to maintain consistency and compliance across environments.

3. Key Features of Cloud Orchestration

Automated Provisioning – Create and configure servers, storage, and networking automatically.

Workflow Automation – Manage dependencies and run complex sequences of tasks.

Multi-Cloud Support – Integrate workloads across AWS, Azure, GCP, or private clouds.

Self-Service Portals – Allow teams to request resources on-demand.

Policy Enforcement & Governance – Ensure compliance with organizational or regulatory rules.

Monitoring & Reporting – Track performance, costs, and usage.

Scalability & Elasticity – Dynamic scaling based on workloads.

4. Primary Users of Cloud Orchestration

DevOps Engineers – Automating CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployments.

Cloud Architects – Designing cross-cloud workflows and resource allocation.

SREs (Site Reliability Engineers) – Managing reliability, scaling, and failover.

IT Operations Teams – Ensuring infrastructure is provisioned and compliant.

Businesses/Enterprises – Using orchestration to simplify cloud governance and costs.

5. Typical Use Cases

Application Deployment – Automating end-to-end app deployment workflows.

Disaster Recovery – Automated failover and backup workflows.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) – Managing infrastructure in repeatable, version-controlled ways.

Dev/Test Environments – Quickly provisioning and tearing down testing sandboxes.

Multi-Cloud Management – Running workloads across multiple providers seamlessly.

Big Data & AI Workflows – Automating data ingestion, transformation, and training pipelines.

6. How to Get Started

Define Goals – (e.g., automate deployments, reduce costs, ensure compliance).

Choose a Tool – Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, AWS CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager, etc.

Model Workflows – Write orchestration templates/playbooks to describe resources.

Integrate with CI/CD – Connect orchestration with your DevOps pipelines.

Start Small – Begin with one automated process, then scale to more.

Implement Monitoring & Policies – Ensure visibility and compliance.

7. How It Works

Templates/Playbooks/Manifests define infrastructure and workflows (e.g., YAML, JSON, HCL).

Orchestration Engine (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.) reads definitions and interacts with cloud APIs.

Execution – Resources are provisioned, configured, and linked in the right sequence.

Automation Loop – The orchestrator monitors, scales, heals, and updates as needed.

Example:

Deploying a web app → Orchestrator provisions VM + load balancer + database + configures networking + deploys app code → monitors health → scales resources when needed.

8. Deployment & Implementation Options

Public Clouds – AWS (CloudFormation), Azure (Resource Manager), GCP (Deployment Manager).

Multi-Cloud Tools – Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi.

Container Orchestration – Kubernetes, Nomad, OpenShift.

Hybrid/Private Clouds – VMware vRealize, Red Hat CloudForms, OpenStack Heat.

9. Limitations & Challenges

Complexity – Large workflows can be difficult to design and debug.

Learning Curve – Tools (Terraform, Kubernetes, etc.) require specialized skills.

Lock-in Risk – Cloud-native orchestrators (CloudFormation, ARM) can tie you to a provider.

Security Concerns – Automated provisioning can introduce risks if policies aren’t enforced.

Cost Overruns – Poorly designed orchestration can overscale resources.

Tool Sprawl – Too many orchestration tools can create management overhead.

10. Comparison with Other Tools

Category

Example Tools

How They Compare

Provisioning (IaC)

Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi

Focus on resource creation; orchestration is broader (workflow + lifecycle).

Configuration Management

Ansible, Puppet, Chef

Focus on configuring resources after they exist; orchestration covers full automation.

Container Orchestration

Kubernetes, Nomad, OpenShift

Special case of orchestration, focused on container workloads.

Workflow Automation

Airflow, Argo Workflows

Focus on task/data pipelines; cloud orchestration manages infra + workflows.

Multi-Cloud Management

Terraform, Morpheus, CloudBolt

Provide abstraction across multiple cloud providers.

✅ In summary:
Cloud Orchestration helps you automate, scale, and control multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud environments, reducing manual work while improving reliability and compliance. It’s essential for DevOps, SREs, and enterprises managing complex cloud operations.

Source:-https://cloudcomputing-news.net/

Italy plans to set up a national agency tasked with combating cyber attacks as it continues work on its unified cloud infrastructure.

The country is one of many European nations attempting to enhance their cybersecurity capabilities.

Many aspects of Italy’s digital security, which are dispersed among various Ministers and state bodies, are to be brought together under the authority of the Prime Minister.

The general director and his deputy will be appointed for four years, according to a draft decree reportedly seen by Reuters. Their mandate can only be renewed once.

The new agency will involve six departments and will, in the first instance, be staffed by 300 employees, with the intention of boosting this number to 800 by 2027.

In April 2021, the Italian Government delivered a 2,500-page recovery plan tothe European Commission, which detailed an intention to utilise new cloud technology for public administration to increase security.

The plan would need investment from the EU with about €900 million apparently earmarked for it.

The project would also involve overseas tech companies, Innovation Minister Vittorio Colao announced in May.

With American-owned Amazon, Google and Microsoft being the world’s major cloud players, concerns over potential surveillance had been raised due to the adoption of the U.S. CLOUD Act of 2018.

Italy intends to create the cloud infrastructure through a public-private partnership, which will be implemented by a European tender.

Source:-https://www.vanillaplus.com/ Canonical and Google Cloud have launched Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud. This is a new Ubuntu offering available to […]

Source:-https://www.vanillaplus.com/

Canonical and Google Cloud have launched Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud. This is a new Ubuntu offering available to all Google Cloud users. Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud reportedly allows instant access to security patching covering thousands of open source applications for up to 10 years and critical compliance features essential to running workloads in regulated environments.

Google Cloud has long partnered with Canonical to offer innovative developer solutions, from desktop to Kubernetes and AI/ML. In the vein of this collaboration, Google Cloud and Canonical have created a more secure, hardened, and cost-effective devops environment; Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud for all enterprises to accelerate their cloud adoption.

“Enterprise customers are increasingly adopting Google Cloud to run their core business-critical and customer-facing applications,” says June Yang, VP and GM, compute, Google Cloud. “The availability of Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud will offer our enterprise customers the additional security and compliance services needed for their mission-critical workloads.”

Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud is a premium version of Ubuntu focusing on enterprise and production use. It provides developers/administrators with a secured devops environment, addressing Security, one of the fundamental pillars for all IT systems. It is based on standard Ubuntu components, but comes with a set of additional services activated out of the box, including:

Patching of high and critical CVEs for Ubuntu’s universe repository, which covers over 30,000 packages, including Node.js, MongoDB, Redis and Apache Kafka, to name a few.
A 10 year maintenance commitment (For 18.04 LTS onwards. The maintenance period for Ubuntu Pro 16.04 LTS is 8 years.)
Live kernel patching, which offers VM instances increased security and higher uptimes.
Officially certified components to enable operating environments under compliance regimes such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, and ISO.
Features to be available in H2 2021: Certified FIPS 140-2 components; security dashboard for Security Command Center, Managed Apps and more.
All the standard optimisations and security updates included in Ubuntu.
Ubuntu Pro for Google Cloud at work
Gojek has evolved from a ride-hailing company to a technology company offering a suite of more than 20 services across payment, e-commerce, and transportation. Through their applications, they’re now serving millions of users across Southeast Asia.

“We needed more time to comprehensively test and migrate our Ubuntu 16.04 LTS workloads to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, which would mean stretching beyond the standard maintenance timelines for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. With Ubuntu Pro on Google Cloud, we now can postpone this, and in moving our 16.04 workloads to Ubuntu Pro, we benefit from its live kernel patching and improved security coverage for our key open source components,” according to Kartik Gupta, engineering manager for CI/CD & FinOps at Gojek.

To help customers get better visibility of cost and money savings, Ubuntu Pro for Google Cloud embeds a transparent and innovative approach to pricing. For instance, Ubuntu Pro will be 3-4.5% of your average computing cost, meaning the more computing resources you consume, the smaller percentage you pay for Ubuntu Pro. Customers can purchase Ubuntu Pro directly through GCP Console or Google Cloud Marketplace for a streamlined procurement process, enabling quicker access to these commercial features offered by Canonical.

Source:-https://www.crn.com.au/

Ingram Micro has added backup-as-a-service provider Veeam Software to its cloud marketplace in Australia and New Zealand.

The distie has had Veeam on its books for 12 years and is now making Veeam’s two biggest products, Backup for Office 365 and Backup Essentials Universal License, available through its online platform.

This will mean partners have simplified access to the products with procurement, provisioning, billing, maintenance, and support through a single panel.

“We are excited to take Veeam, our trusted partner of over a decade, on the journey to the cloud marketplace with us. Just as Veeam’s solutions have continued to innovate over the years, Ingram Micro aims to reach new channel partners through an equally innovative distribution platform,” Ingram Micro Australia cloud services director Trent Gomersall said.

“Adding Veeam to the Ingram Micro solution set delivers an immediate and powerful advantage to our resellers, providing access to one of the leaders in Backup solutions that deliver Modern Data Protection.”

The products will also be available to Ingram partners in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia later this year.

“We are thrilled to bring two of our core backup solutions to Ingram Micro’s cloud marketplace, and look forward to expanding our reach to more partners than ever before with the help of Ingram Micro’s extensive and knowledgeable reseller team,” Veeam APJ channels, cloud and service provider senior director Belinda Jurisic said.

“Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 enables local businesses to eliminate the risk of losing access and control over their Office 365 data so that their information is always protected and accessible.

“To complement this, businesses can also purchase Veeam Universal License (VUL), a simple, flexible ‘per workload’ license for protecting all workloads across on-premises, hybrid and multi-cloud environments.”

Source:-https://itbrief.co.nz/

VMware updates VMware SASE with VMware Cloud Web Security, a cloud-hosted security service that can be delivered via a global network of VMware SASE and partner points of presence.

VMware Cloud Web Security is designed to protect users and infrastructure accessing SaaS and Internet apps. It says the new platform can respond quickly to changing threats, encryptions, and business needs. Removing scaling difficulties while providing insights to help reduce the attack surface

According to Dell’Oro Group, the SASE market size is estimated to grow by 5X over the next five years. There are a number of factors driving this growth, including:

Applications moving to the cloud and edge.
Employees accessing apps from anywhere as they adopt different work styles.
Data processed, analysed, and stored at the edge is multiplying at a rapid rate.
In order to adapt to these changes, organisations need to adopt both a cloud-centric and an edge-native model, support a hybrid workforce, while protecting against emerging security threats. SASE is becoming a common approach for networking and security across this distributed environment.
“We introduced VMware SASE at VMworld 2020. Since then, we’ve been building a platform that converges industry-leading cloud networking and cloud security services,” says VMware senior vice president and general manager for Service Provider and Edge, Sanjay Uppal.

“At the same time, VMware and our partners have created more than 150 SASE points of presence, which are strategically distributed around the world and serve as an on-ramp to SaaS and other cloud services.”

“VMware SASE combines SD-WAN capabilities with cloud-delivered security functions, including cloud web security, cloud access security broker, zero-trust network access, and AIOps, among others. These capabilities are delivered as-a-service from a global network of PoPs (partner points of presence). VMware Cloud Web Security launched today. We are proud of the progress we’ve made.”

VMware SASE is positioned between the service provider underlay and the application overlay. The platform is able to draw on 5G services to improve latency or performance, while at the same time deliver these capabilities to applications running in the cloud or workloads moving to the edge.

VMware uses drone fleets as an example. It says many logistics companies use drones in large warehouses to help with inventory and restocking. It says there’s no room for error with flight paths as drones fly above employees working on the floor. VMware says low latency and reliable networks are crucial, and SASE platforms can use a 5G underlay service, such as a multi-access edge computing service, to improve the performance of drone management applications delivered as an overlay service.

“If you think about it from this angle, what we are really creating is an extensible service edge platform in the cloud,” says Uppal.

“Businesses can consume services on-demand in a subscription-based model. The pandemic proved we never really know when we’ll have to make a quick pivot in the name of business continuity. An extensible service edge platform would help customers deploy the services they need on the turn of a dime.”

Source:-https://www.dqindia.com/ Given the Covid-19 pandemic situation around the world, the adoption of cloud technology by different enterprises is visibly accelerating. […]

Source:-https://www.dqindia.com/

Given the Covid-19 pandemic situation around the world, the adoption of cloud technology by different enterprises is visibly accelerating. The adoption rate is expected to continue growing for the foreseeable future. However, it has become evident that a horizontal cloud does not always meet the specific needs of certain industries, especially highly regulated ones such as banking or healthcare. This is where “Industry Cloud” comes in.

“Industry Cloud” explained
Techopedia defines Industry Cloud as a cloud system that has been heavily customized to suit the needs of a specific industry in order to accommodate the business, operatory, legal, regulatory, as well as security and other considerations. The main focus of Industry Cloud is vertical integration rather than horizontal one, which is the focus of general cloud computing.

There are industries that have been very resistant to the change that cloud computing has brought about because it does not provide the very specific needs that a vertical market organization such as a financial or medical institution needs. Such organizations need cloud infrastructure that is specifically tailored to their industries, and thus the term ‘Industry Cloud’ was coined.

An Industry Cloud focuses on specialised processes with tools and business services dedicated to a specific industry. Designed with industry challenges in mind, these clouds can enable organizations jump ahead and deliver value at record pace.

Advantages of Industry Cloud
The key advantage of Industry Cloud is that it addresses the problems of systemic risks that most organisations face with security, regulatory, and compliance. In addition, there are other advantages such as:

Standardized configurations
Improved operational efficiency
Deeper customer engagement
Focused spends
Customized holistic solutions
How does Industry Cloud compare to general cloud computing?
It is worth stating that an industrial cloud is not a new type of technology or a paradigm-shifting concept or solution. It is simply a specific method or way of using cloud computing to handle industrial processes and challenges.

The major difference can be found in how they are integrated into business operations. The Industry Cloud is designed to create more value when managing systems within the boundaries of the industry it is applied to. The general cloud employs a more horizontal approach and is built to function outside the boundaries of a specific industry. Another difference is that the Industry Cloud is equipped with specific industrial features to manage data and schedule tasks which means they can determine what data is to be sent to the cloud and what data is not. On the other hand, general cloud solutions will struggle to handle these specific data requirements.

Overall, the industry-specific cloud has an advantage over the general cloud as it understands data, standards and regulatory policies associated with a specific industry. This helps the organizations in scalability as it occurs within the constraints set by the policies of an industrial niche. Thus, the emergence of the industry-specific cloud is a natural progression of cloud computing to meet the varying and highly personalised industry requirements.

Wrapping up
The war between traditional on-premises data center infrastructure providers and public cloud providers is far from over. In fact, the cloud game has gone a step ahead wherein industries today require more than general-purpose cloud capabilities. They require industry-specific cloud capabilities. As cloud solutions continue to mature, major public cloud providers are investing in solutions to meet specialized industry needs. It’s still early days for industry clouds. Established companies in industries feeling the sting of competition from cloud-native disrupters are especially good prospects for these types of solutions.

AvidThink Principal Analyst Roy Chua will kick off the FierceTelecom Summer Blitz virtual event next week with a presentation on the topic of cloud native.

It’s an important topic because practically every telco in the world is in the process of introducing cloud-native technologies in its network.

Some greenfield operators such as Rakuten and Dish are building their networks with cloud-native technology from the onset.

Dish recently announced that it will use Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud to host its core and radio access network (RAN) for 5G. Chua said, “Dish is actually betting their whole farm on AWS.”

One thing that the panelists will discuss next week is the definition of cloud native. Chua said it is rather ambiguously defined. “At the highest level it’s building your applications to use the cloud delivery model and provide services in the cloud. Inside that, the technologies that are usually part of it are containers, service meshes, microservices, immutable infrastructure, the use of automation and the use of continuous integration and continuous delivery.”

Cloud native offers the ability to develop apps faster and to scale them to much larger numbers than is possible with traditional applications. Cloud-native applications also lower operational costs and require less effort to manage.

However, cloud native has some of its own challenges.

It’s a collection of services that are spun up as needed, and they have to coordinate and talk amongst each other. Chua said trouble-shooting can be tricky because microservices are ephemeral. If there’s a problem, the microservices may go away before the problem is fixed.

And in a cloud-native architecture, everything is disaggregated. “Disaggregation is great, but you have to put things back together,” he said. “That’s where Kubernetes comes in. It gives you a relatively lean way of orchestrating and managing your cloud-native, containerized services.”

Verizon is doing cloud native

Miguel Carames, director of network and technology planning at Verizon, will be speaking on next week’s FierceTelecom panel. Of cloud native, he said, “It’s all about decoupling the app from the infrastructure and getting more common services provided by the infrastructure itself.”

He said cloud native is much more efficient because it eliminates a lot of duplication. Traditionally, each application had a lot of administrative functions, and those were replicated across all the applications. “Cloud native is: find these common functions and make sure this is provided by the platform,” said Carames. “The containers that are handling can access that information as needed, but they can go to these microservices where the state is stored as opposed to having to replicate. This is all built in our telco cloud.”

Verizon’s telco cloud is known as the Verizon Cloud Platform (VCP). It has different flavors with different capabilities depending on where it is deployed in the network, whether core, edge or RAN.

“When we started this virtualization journey, containers were not mature enough to trust for telco workloads,” said Carames. Instead, Verizon built its VCP using OpenStack software. But its new 5G standalone core is being built with cloud-native software. “Things that are already in OpenStack we will leverage them because we already made the investment, we’ll have that in the network,” he said. “But as we get to end-of-life considerations on hardware, we will be moving legacy to cloud native as well. Everything that is new will be deployed in cloud native.”

Of the challenges to moving to cloud native, Carames cited people and culture. “We need to train all the teams, even the planning role. You need operations and planning to be a lot more aware and understand how apps interact.”

He said the other challenge relates to working with Verizon’s vendors. “In many ways our vendors provide something, but we provide the platform, and we have to share our specs so they can come and integrate. The network vendors need to know the architecture.”

Speaking of vendors, Ericsson VP of Core, IT & Cloud Technology Ravi Vaidyanathan will also be participating on the Fierce panel next week. His group at Ericsson is helping operators on their cloud-native journey. “We have our cloud infrastructure offering — a telco-grade, container-as-a-service platform based on open source Kubernetes,” said Vaidyanathan. “We’re working on the bare metal versions of cloud native.”

He said when it comes to applications, Ericsson has used 5G as a key transition technology to build a 5G portfolio from the ground up as cloud native.

Similar to Carames, he said one of the big benefits of a cloud-native architecture is that common features don’t have to be replicated myriad times. “I can focus on my network functions,” said Vaidyanathan. “I don’t need to focus on something like logging.”

Another benefit of cloud native is streamlined operations and the rapid pace of introducing new features. “Amazon launches dozens of services every day,” said Vaidyanathan. “Telcos are aspirational at looking to match that pace.”

While Ericsson has been helping telcos on their cloud-native journey, the vendor decided to also adopt cloud-native processes for it own internal software development.
