Source:-https://en.globes.co.il/ Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services, a unit of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) announced on Friday that it would open […]

Source:-https://en.globes.co.il/

Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services, a unit of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) announced on Friday that it would open an infrastructure region in Israel in the first half of 2023. The company recently won the Israeli government’s “Nimbus” computing tender along with Google Cloud. The two companies were selected by the Ministry of Finance and the Government Computer Authority as providers of cloud services to the government of Israel and the IDF for the next seven years, in a tender estimated to be worth some NIS 4 billion.

After losing in the tender, software giant Microsoft, with its Azure cloud computing service, and computer technology company Oracle, filed administrative petitions with the aim of leaving an opening for a future legal appeal against the results of the tender, but no direct legal proceedings are taking place to annual the outcome. Microsoft and Oracle stress the fact that they are continuing their efforts to set up datacenters in Israel.

Oracle announced that it would open its cloud center located in the Jerusalem area this summer. Microsoft, which announced in early 2020 that it would open its datacenter in 2021, later announced that it would open only in the first half of 2022. Google, which has also officially announced that it will set up a regional cloud datacenter, has not stated when it will start to operate.

Amazon’s regional cloud, like the others, is not intended for government use only, but for the entire Israeli economy. In its announcement on Friday the company stated: “The AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will enable even more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and non-profits to run their applications and serve end-users from data centers located in Israel. Additionally, the government of Israel announced that it has selected AWS as its primary cloud provider as part of the “Nimbus” contract for government ministries and subsidiaries. The Nimbus framework will provide cloud services to Israeli government ministries including local municipalities, government-owned companies, and public sector organizations with the aim of helping to accelerate digital transformation. It will be instrumental in driving innovation and enabling new digital services for the citizens of Israel.”

In August 2020, it was announced that AWS was working on setting up datacenters at three sites in Israel, each with an output of 16 megawatts. AWS began to advance the project together with Azrieli Group Ltd. (TASE: AZRG) and US company Compass. The sites, according to the report, are at Bet Shemesh, Shoham, and in Hefer Valley. The real estate deals involved were estimated at NIS 300-400m, and the project as a whole at about NIS 1 billion.

Accountant General Yali Rothenberg said, “”We congratulate AWS on their winning bid in the first tender of Project Nimbus, a multi-year flagship project led by the Israeli Government Procurement Administration to provide a comprehensive framework for the provision of cloud services to the Government of Israel”

“The new AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will empower more public and private institutions, innovative startups, and global companies to deliver built-for-the-cloud applications that help fuel economic development across the country.

“It is the latest in our list of AWS Regions across Europe and the Middle East, which includes existing regions in Bahrain, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, and the UK as well as regions under development in Spain, Switzerland, and United Arab Emirates,” said Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure, AWS.

“The new region is a continuation of our investment to support enterprises of all kinds, help startups scale and grow, enable technical skills development, and create cloud literacy,” DeSantis continued. “Cloud technology is at the heart of the Israeli government’s digital transformation program, and their approach highlights the importance of setting a strong course for cloud adoption and leading by example to re-invent citizen services.”

AWS, considered the world’s leading cloud services provider, set out in its announcement how its global datacenter network is structured, and its advantages for users. “AWS Regions are comprised of Availability Zones, which place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting customers’ business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that leverage multiple Availability Zones. Globally, AWS has 81 Availability Zones across 25 geographic regions, with plans to launch an additional 21 Availability Zones and seven AWS Regions in Australia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates.

“Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and is connected through redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones and across multiple regions to achieve even greater fault tolerance.

“The addition of the AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will enable local customers with data residency requirements to store their data in Israel with the assurance that they retain control over the location of their data. Organizations using this region will also be able to access advanced technologies from the world’s leading cloud with the broadest and deepest suite of cloud services to drive innovation including analytics, compute, database, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, mobile services, storage, and more.”

Like other cloud companies, AWS provided a list of some of its most prominent customers, among the Bank Leumi, Migdal, CyberArk, Fiverr, monday.com, Hashavshevet (Wizsoft), the Rami Levy group, and the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv (Ichilov Hospital).

AWS has a Partner Network (APN) Partners consisting of tens of thousands of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Systems Integrators (SIs) around the world. AWS Partners build innovative solutions and services on AWS, and the APN helps by providing business, technical, marketing, and go-to-market support. APN SIs, consulting partners, and ISVs working in Israel help enterprise and public sector customers migrate to AWS, deploy mission-critical applications, and provide a full range of monitoring, automation, and management services for customers’ environments on AWS.

According to the company’s announcement, among AWS Israel Partners are Alcide, AllCloud, AppsFlyer, Automat-IT, BigPanda, Bringg, Checkmarx, CloudBuzz, Matrix CloudZone, Comm-IT, Continuity Software, CloudRide, DoIT International, Guardicore, Kaltura, MidLink, Namogoo, Nice, Orca Security, Perimeter81, Quali, Radware, Sapiens, TeraSky, and Trax Retail.

The collaboration with AllCloud, for example, was reported in December 2020, and includes investment of some $30 million in transferring Israeli companies to AWS cloud services.

The regional cloud represents a continuation of AWS’s activity in Israel, which includes Amazon CloudFront edge locations. Amazon CloudFront is described as “a highly secure and programmable Content Delivery Network (CDN) that accelerates the delivery of data, videos, applications, and APIs to users worldwide with low latency and high transfer speeds.”

In 2020, AWS also launched AWS Outposts and AWS Direct Connect in Israel. AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that offers the same AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any data center, co-location space, or on-premises facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Direct Connect makes it easy to establish a dedicated network connection from customers’ on-premises infrastructure to AWS infrastructure. Using AWS Direct Connect, customers can establish private connectivity between AWS and their data center, office, or colocation environment, which can reduce their network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than internet-based connections.”

The company also mentioned its AWS Activate program for cooperation with startups in Israel, which has been in operation since 2013. “This program gives startups access to guidance and one-on-one time with AWS experts as well as web-based training, self-paced labs, customer support, third-party offers, and up to $100,000 in AWS service credits – all at no charge. This is in addition to the work that AWS already does with the venture capital community, startup accelerators, and incubators to help startups grow in the cloud. In Israel, AWS works with accelerator organizations such as 8200 EISP, F2 Venture Capital – the junction, and TechStars as well as venture capital firms like Aleph, Pitango, TLV Partners, and Viola Ventures to support the rapid growth of their portfolio companies,” the AWS announcement said.

Source:-https://www.helpnetsecurity.com “So much of the world’s development happens on GitHub that security is not just an opportunity for us, but […]

Source:-https://www.helpnetsecurity.com

“So much of the world’s development happens on GitHub that security is not just an opportunity for us, but our responsibility. To secure software at scale, we need to make a base-level impact that can drive the most change; and that starts with the code,” Grey Baker, GitHub’s Senior Director of Product Management, told Help Net Security.

“Everything we’ve built previously was about responding to security incidents (dependency scanning, secret scanning, Dependabot) — reacting in real time, quickly. Our future state is about fundamentally preventing vulnerabilities from ever happening, by moving security core into the developer workflow.”

GitHub Code Scanning
The Code Scanning feature is powered by CodeQL, a powerful static analysis engine built by Semmle, which was acquired by GitHub in September 2019.

The engine can analyze code written in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python and Go, but since the Code Scanning feature built on the open SARIF standard, it can also work with third-party analysis engines available from the GitHub Marketplace.

“We want developers to be able to use their tools of choice, for any of their projects on GitHub, all within the native GitHub experience they love. We’ve partnered with more than a dozen open source and commercial security vendors to date and we’ll continue to integrate code scanning with other third-party vendors through GitHub Actions and Apps,” Baker noted.

GitHub Actions
Among the third parties that offer automated security scans via GitHub Actions are Checkmarx and DefenseCode.

The major value add here is that developers can work, and stay within, the code development ecosystem in which they’re most accustomed to while using their preferred scanning tools,” explained James Brotsos, Senior Solutions Engineer at Checkmarx.

“GitHub is an immensely popular resource for developers, so having something that ensures the security of code without hindering agility is critical. Our ability to automate SAST and SCA scans directly within GitHub repos simplifies workflows and removes tedious steps for the development cycle that can traditionally stand in the way of achieving DevSecOps.”

Checkmarx’s SCA (software composition analysis) help developers discover and remedy vulnerabilities within open source components that are being included into the application and prioritizing them accordingly based on severity. Checkmarx SAST (static application security testing) scans proprietary code bases – even uncompiled – to detect new and existing vulnerabilities.

“This is all done in an automated fashion, so as soon as a pull request takes place, a scan is triggered, and results are embedded directly into GitHub. Together, these integrations paint a holistic picture of the entire application’s security posture to ensure all potential gaps are accounted for,” Brotsos added.

Leon Juranic, CTO at DefenseCode, said that they are very excited by this initiative, as it provides access to security analysis to over 50+ million Github users.

“Having the security analysis results displayed as code scanning alerts in GitHub provides an convenient way to triage and prioritize fixes, a process that could be cumbersome usually requiring scrolling through many pages of exported reports, going back and forth between your code and the reported results, or reviewing them in dashboards provided by the security tool. The ease of use now means you can initiate scans, view, fix, and close alerts for potential vulnerabilities in your project’s code in an environment that is already familiar and where most of your other workflows are done,” he noted.

A week ago, GitHub also announced additional support for container scanning and standards and configuration scanning for infrastructure as code, with integration by 42Crunch, Accurics, Bridgecrew, Snyk, Aqua Security, and Anchore.

The benefits and future plans
“We expect code scanning to prevent thousands of vulnerabilities from ever existing, by catching them at code review time. We envisage a world with fewer software vulnerabilities because security review is an automated part of the developer workflow,” Baker explained.

“During the code scanning beta, developers fixed 72% of the security errors found by CodeQL and reported in the code scanning pull request experience. Achieving such a high fix rate is the result of years of research, as well as an integration that makes it easy to understand each result.”

Over 12,000 repositories tried code scanning during the beta, and another 7,000 have enabled it since it became generally available, he says, and the reception has been really positive, with many highlighting valuable security finds.

“We’ll continue to iterate and focus on feedback from the community, including around access control and permissions, which are of high priority to our users,” he concluded.

Source:-https://www.arnnet.com.au

It’s October again, and that can only mean one thing – it’s the Cybersecurity Awareness Month! Observed each year, Cybersecurity Awareness Month aims to educate organizations and individuals on all things cybersecurity and encourage the more secure usage and implementation of software, applications, IoT devices, and more.

To do our part and help spread awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, with a specific focus on software security, over the next few weeks, Checkmarx will be releasing a wide variety of content to empower organizations, AppSec teams, developers, and software end users alike to be more cyber-vigilant.

5 Reasons to Prioritize Software Security

To kick things off, we launched a brand-new eBook outlining five reasons why software security needs to be a higher priority.

As technology evolves at a pace like never before and digital transformation shifts into hyperdrive, everyone is feeling the effects. DevOps teams, AppSec managers, and developers are certainly no exception, working to develop and deploy software at expedited rates to keep their businesses competitive. However, this speed comes at a price, often causing security to fall by the wayside – a big reason why vulnerable software and applications are now the leading cause of security breaches.

Our eBook is designed to help readers understand the biggest trends impacting today’s software landscape and arm them with the insights needed to grab software security by the horns and implement it across their DevOps practices. Visit Checkmarx’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2020 hub to download this essential guide to kick-off your month right, along with infographics, research, and more! And, while you’re perusing our materials, make sure to register for our upcoming educational webinar on October 14 led by our own cybersecurity evangelist Susan St. Clair, where she’ll take a deeper dive into the eBook takeaways and best practices for kick-starting a comprehensive AppSec program.

Application Security: Turbulence often Leads to Transformation

Most security and risk (S&R) professionals in our industry have heard of Top 10 Lists. For example, OWASP and their community of contributors have expanded their Top 10 security projects to include Mobile Apps, APIs, IoT, Serverless, Containers, Blockchain, etc. In fact, there are several OWASP Projects currently underway. Comparably, Forrester recently released their report on The Top Security Technology Trends To Watch, 2020. Through the use of client queries, research projects, and industry perspectives, the Forrester report discusses trends that will likely disrupt S&R practices over the next three years.

As organizations adopt DevOps methodologies to increase software release frequency, automation of security technologies within the continuous integration, delivery, and deployment (CI/CD) toolchain is key to releasing more secure software—faster. Those moving towards DevSecOps acknowledge that security cannot become a point of contention that slows release frequency, but instead, should actually help increase it.

Forrester notes that the No. 1 security and risk technology trend highlights the need for application security tools to be integrated (automatically) with CI/CD pipelines to mitigate process gaps. In fact, the report states, “Organizations that can’t bridge the gaps will see delayed product releases or increases in the number of security issues in released products.” Simply put, if organizations cannot address security tool integration and automation within their software development processes, then it will likely lead to decreased revenue opportunities and increased operational risks.

We’re excited to bring you a strong stream of informative and actionable content to help keep you and your business secure from emerging software security risks. We encourage you to follow along on our social channels – comment, post, and tweet at us using the hashtags #IAmSoftwareSecure, #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth, and #BeCyberSmart – and visit our Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2020 resource center frequently for updates and new material throughout the month!

An overview of the leading static code analysis tools—including SonarQube, Checkmarx, Coverity, Black Duck, and WhiteSource—explaining what each does, how they differ, and what DevOps teams should evaluate when choosing one.

Static code analysis is the practice of examining source code for bugs, security vulnerabilities, code-quality issues, and policy violations without executing the program. Because analysis happens before runtime, teams can catch defects early in the development lifecycle—often directly inside the IDE or as a gate in a CI/CD pipeline. As DevSecOps practices mature, demand for these tools has grown significantly across enterprise and open-source projects alike.

This article explains how static analysis fits into modern DevOps workflows and profiles the major platforms that engineering teams commonly evaluate, including those cited in market research from around 2019: PyCharm (JetBrains), ReSharper, Coverity, SonarQube, Micro Focus Fortify, Black Duck, Checkmarx, WhiteSource (now Mend), Closure Compiler, and Klocwork.

What Is Static Code Analysis?

Static analysis tools parse source code, bytecode, or compiled binaries and apply a set of rules—ranging from simple linting to deep data-flow analysis—to surface potential problems. Common categories of findings include:

Security vulnerabilities – SQL injection, cross-site scripting, buffer overflows, insecure deserialization.

Bug patterns – Null-pointer dereferences, resource leaks, unreachable code, incorrect API usage.

Code-quality issues – Duplicated code, excessive complexity, violations of naming conventions.

License and open-source risk – Identifying third-party components and their associated licenses (a specialty of Software Composition Analysis tools like Black Duck and WhiteSource).

Static analysis complements dynamic testing (DAST) and runtime monitoring; it does not replace them.

Key Platforms at a Glance

SonarQube

SonarQube (by SonarSource) is one of the most widely adopted open-core platforms for continuous code inspection. It supports 30+ languages, integrates with virtually every CI server (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI), and surfaces a “Quality Gate” that can fail a build if thresholds for bugs, vulnerabilities, or coverage are breached. The Community Edition is free and open source; commercial editions add security-focused rules and branch analysis.

Checkmarx

Checkmarx SAST focuses heavily on application security. It performs deep data-flow and taint analysis to trace how untrusted input travels through an application, making it popular for organizations with formal AppSec programs. It integrates into IDEs and CI/CD pipelines and provides detailed remediation guidance alongside findings.

Coverity (Synopsys)

Coverity is known for its low false-positive rate on compiled languages such as C, C++, Java, and C#. It is widely used in industries with stringent safety and security requirements—automotive, aerospace, and medical devices—where every defect matters. Synopsys acquired Coverity in 2014 and has since integrated it into a broader software integrity portfolio.

Black Duck (Synopsys)

Black Duck is a Software Composition Analysis (SCA) tool rather than a traditional SAST tool. Its primary job is to inventory all open-source components in a codebase, flag known CVEs in those components, and report on license obligations. For organizations adopting open-source at scale, SCA tools like Black Duck are essential companions to SAST.

WhiteSource (now Mend)

WhiteSource (rebranded as Mend in 2022) also sits in the SCA category. It automatically detects open-source libraries, monitors for new CVEs on a continuous basis, and can open pull requests to update vulnerable dependencies—making it popular in GitHub and Azure DevOps workflows.

Micro Focus Fortify

Fortify Static Code Analyzer (now under OpenText after its acquisition of Micro Focus) performs deep inter-procedural analysis across a large number of languages. It is frequently chosen by large enterprises and government organizations that require extensive compliance reporting (PCI DSS, HIPAA, OWASP).

Klocwork

Klocwork (now part of Perforce) specializes in C, C++, Java, and C# analysis with a focus on safety-critical and embedded systems. It is commonly used in automotive and industrial applications where misra-C compliance is required.

ReSharper and ReSharper C++ (JetBrains)

ReSharper is a Visual Studio extension that provides real-time code inspection, refactoring assistance, and code-style enforcement for C# and .NET. ReSharper C++ extends similar capabilities to C++ developers. Both are developer-productivity tools that surface issues interactively as code is written, making them IDE-integrated static analysis rather than pipeline-level scanners.

PyCharm (JetBrains)

PyCharm is primarily a Python IDE, but its built-in inspections perform real-time static analysis: detecting unused imports, type mismatches (especially when used with type hints and mypy), unreachable code, and PEP 8 style violations. For Python teams, PyCharm’s inspections provide a low-friction first layer of analysis without requiring a separate tool.

Google Closure Compiler

The Closure Compiler is a JavaScript optimizer and type-checker from Google. In addition to minifying and bundling JS, it performs static type checking when code is annotated with JSDoc types. It is less commonly used today as TypeScript and its own compiler have become the dominant approach to type-safe JavaScript, but it remains relevant for projects in the Google ecosystem.

How to Evaluate a Static Analysis Tool

No single tool is universally best. The right choice depends on your language stack, risk profile, and workflow. Consider the following criteria:

Language and framework coverage – Confirm the tool supports every language in your repository, including infrastructure-as-code files (Terraform, CloudFormation) if applicable.

Type of analysis – SAST for first-party code, SCA for open-source dependencies, or both? Many teams need both.

False-positive rate – High noise causes developers to ignore findings. Evaluate tuning capabilities and default rule sets on a realistic sample of your codebase before committing.

CI/CD integration – Does the tool have a native plugin for your pipeline (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)? Can it comment on pull requests with inline findings?

IDE integration – Shifting analysis left into the IDE reduces the feedback loop. Tools with IDE plugins (SonarLint, Checkmarx IDE plugin, ReSharper) enable developers to fix issues before code is even committed.

Incremental scanning – Full scans of large repositories can take hours. Differential or incremental analysis on changed files is important for developer experience in pull-request workflows.

Compliance reporting – If you must demonstrate OWASP Top 10, CWE/SANS 25, PCI DSS, or similar compliance, confirm the tool maps findings to those standards.

Licensing and cost model – Open-source tiers (SonarQube Community), per-developer licensing, and per-scan pricing models all have different total-cost profiles at scale.

Fitting Static Analysis into a DevOps Pipeline

The most effective implementations layer static analysis at multiple points:

IDE / pre-commit – Real-time inspections (ReSharper, PyCharm, SonarLint) catch trivial issues before a commit is made.

Pull-request gate – A lightweight incremental scan runs on changed files and posts inline comments. The Quality Gate can block merging if critical issues are introduced.

Nightly / release pipeline – A full scan with deeper rules runs less frequently and updates the central dashboard (SonarQube, Fortify SSC, Checkmarx CXSAST).

Dependency monitoring – SCA tools (Black Duck, Mend) watch for new CVEs in third-party components continuously, even between code changes.

Summary

Static code analysis has moved from a niche quality practice to a standard component of DevSecOps. Tools range from lightweight IDE inspections (PyCharm, ReSharper) to enterprise-grade SAST platforms (Coverity, Checkmarx, Fortify) and open-source composition analysis tools (Black Duck, Mend/WhiteSource). Choosing the right combination depends on your languages, security requirements, and the maturity of your CI/CD pipeline. Whichever tools you select, integrating analysis early—and acting on its findings consistently—is what delivers value.
