In an attempt to overcome management challenges associated with the adoption of agile development methodologies, organizations are using container-management platforms, spurring the market to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30 percent from 2018 through 2023, according to Omdia.

The adoption of cloud-native technologies using a microservices architecture is increasing the agility and flexibility of organizations by enabling the delivery of more frequent changes to meet the demands of businesses. This utilization of a microservices architecture for application development has in turn spurred interest in the use of technologies such as software containers and Kubernetes.

In a recent Omdia survey of 700 end users, 60 percent of respondents stated they had adopted agile development methodologies. However, the processes are not mature enough to fully exploit the capabilities and deliver the speed these technologies—i.e., containers and Kubernetes—can achieve. A total of 32 percent of organizations stated that a lack of cloud-native skills is delaying more rapid adoption of microservices-based applications. These challenges are fueling the robust growth of the container management platform market, as reported by the Omdia Market Radar: Container Management Platforms 2018/19 report.

**Enter the service mesh ** However, as the use of containers expands, so does the complexity of managing service-to-service communications. This development has led to the birth of the service mesh. However, what exactly is a service mesh and how does it integrate with the existing container management platforms?

The open source community has been working to solve the challenges of managing service-to-service communications in the container ecosystem with the rise of Google’s Istio, HashiCorp Consul, and Linkerd, but the market has expanded in 2020. Omdia has identified seven of the leading service-mesh capabilities that provide differing levels of control and technical knowledge required to operate.

“The adoption of service-mesh technology is being inhibited by the uncoordinated manner in which the service mesh is deployed and integrated as part of any cloud-native environment,” said Roy Illsley, chief analyst, cloud and data center research practice, at Omdia. “As the maturity of the ecosystem evolves the complexities of deployment, the process of managing and securing a service mesh must be simplified. Only then will this open the cloud-native technology to a wider audience, and therefore enable more organizations to deploy and manage microservices in production environments.”

**An important shared infrastructure ** In a microservices architecture, applications or services need to communicate with each other. This can be achieved through a central control point, but as the size and number of microservices grow, this becomes a performance and administrative bottleneck with traditional networking infrastructure. A service mesh is a new and separate infrastructure layer that is built into each application, and because the service mesh has visibility of all communications, it is the ideal layer to ensure the environment is optimized.

The basic concept of microservices is that each application, or service, is reliant on other services to deliver the outcomes. For example, in a microservices architecture, if users request train tickets online, they need to know the times of the trains, the cost of the tickets and the routes of the trains. Therefore, the user-request service on the web page will need to communicate with the route database, which will need to communicate with the schedule and then the pricing database (with special offers also having to be interrogated). Finally, this will need to populate the user online order cart. To make this website more user friendly, the service may also want to make suggestions to the user based on history. All these different services are separate microservices that must locate each other and deliver the required function based on the context of the request.

The challenge in terms of performance and scalability with this networked approach to services, where each service is performing a specific function, is dealing with request overload. Each service might need to request data from several other services, and if one service, such as the schedule service above, is central to all service requests, then managing the traffic flows becomes an issue. The service mesh is designed to route and optimize traffic in these scenarios with minimal overhead.

**What to look for in a service mesh ** Service meshes are designed to solve the challenges of managing a large number of intra-service communications in a microservices architecture. While there are a number of different solutions available, Omdia considers that the core capabilities/architectural best practice of a service mesh, as shown in the chart, must include the following:

Control plane and data plane separation
Dynamic routing
Service discovery
Load balancing
Observability and traceability
Security
Interoperability

Although 99.999% availability may be IT’s ambition, it’s far from reality. In March 2019, Google’s Gmail experienced a 4.5-hour global outage. In the same month, Facebook suffered a 14-hour outage, its most massive outage to date, crippling app-accessibility worldwide.

Downtime and low availability will likely occur to all systems eventually, especially when introducing code changes. When outages occur, it’s truly the detection systems and smart mitigation processes that separate quick rebounds from long recoveries.

LogicMonitor has released its IT Downtime Detection and Mitigation Report, a survey of IT professionals to uncover trends and tactics impacting availability in 2020. The report surveyed over 300 IT design makers at organizations with 2,500 or more employees within the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zealand.

Below, we examine the LogicMonitor report’s key findings. We’ll discover, on average, what sort of projects are causing the most outages and brownouts. We’ll also see what strategies top IT teams are using to prevent, detect and mitigate disruptions.

Which Transformation Initiatives Hurt Availability the Most?
Ninety-six percent of organizations surveyed had experienced at least one outage in the past three years. But why? One reason LogicMonitor conducted this report was to pinpoint which digital transformation initiatives and IT trends are the leading contributors to high-profile outages and brownouts.

When determining causation, answers revolve around novel cloud IT initiatives. Fifty-nine percent of respondents felt that mobile computing was causing more brownouts/outages. Fifty-seven percent found AI and edge computing were making outages more common. Other high-ranking reasons included digital transformation (57%) and IoT (53%).

According to the report, “LogicMonitor’s research suggests that IT decision-makers hold IT transformation initiatives responsible for increasingly frequent outages and brownouts.”

Though we generally view digital transformation initiatives in a positive light, they do come with caveats. The move from private to cloud infrastructure, for example, can bring unforeseen costs. Also, some authorities note a lack of talent specializing in cloud and hybrid environments. The report also suggested that accelerated cloud technologies may require time to mend before they realize positive business returns (and higher availability).

Critical Strategies for Preventing Outages
Another goal of the study was to discover what sort of tactics IT professionals are actively using to prevent outages.

The study exposed many strategies that IT folks are currently undertaking. The top three tactics were performing preventative maintenance (75%), reviewing system logs (71%) and increasing the capacity of systems (71%). Other top strategies included designing redundancy into systems, and keeping an eye on customer support tickets.

With the rise of a completely remote workforce, some IT executives do anticipate higher expenditures due to AI and cloud architecture, which could bring added pressure. However, it’s worthy to note the cloud hasn’t negatively affected all groups, or even reached all companies. According to another study conducted by Adobe and Fortune, only one in three organizations store their data in a public cloud. Of course, one could argue that in doing so, such companies substitute innovation for less breaking change.

Another necessary aspect to keep a vigilant eye on the digital ecosystem is proactive monitoring. According to the report, 74% of teams rely on proactive monitoring to detect outages. Continuous monitoring has been a philosophy trumpeted time and time again by DevOps professionals to enable a better release frequency and a window to detrimental interruptions.

Careful analysis ahead of time, active monitoring systems to spot problems and continuously reviewing system logs were the most important tactics found being applied by IT leaders to mitigate found outages and brownouts.

Do you know how much IT resources your employees are consuming?

Proliferation of hybrid and multi-cloud architectures has resulted in rapid and remarkable technological advances. But it has also introduced monumental, multi-faceted complexities into IT infrastructure management, including:

Managing multiple on-premises, private and public cloud resources

In the face of these challenges, enterprise IT must enable innovation and digital transformation. Self-service depends on automation – intelligent automation. It must ensure the orchestrated delivery of IT resources — whether that’s infrastructure or advanced services such as IoT, blockchain and developer tools — fit the end user’s role and responsibilities as well as the needs of the business. With intelligent automation, IT teams can build security and cost guardrails into provisioning those resources, covering everything from access privileges to how long provisioned resources remain available in the cloud. Real-world examples: The Home Depot

Situation

The Home Depot had its sights set on continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), but getting a machine provisioned took anywhere from several days to a week, causing major bottlenecks in business productivity. Also, the company lacked an effective way to track and manage resources, particularly in its hybrid cloud environment.

Solution

The company developed a self-service model, providing developers with front-facing infrastructure services. The IT team now allows thousands of users to provision cloud-based resources without submitting a ticket. What once took one to two weeks now takes 20 minutes.

Furthermore, by implementing a more flexible framework built on modular extensibility for orchestration, Home Depot made integration with existing infrastructure easy. This extensibility supports Home Depot’s evolving IT strategy and facilitates the adoption and integration of Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform and other emerging technologies.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)

Situation

IHG owns over 5,000 hotels and utilizes four different public clouds. They wanted the flexibility of multiple public clouds in order to use the platform that provides the optimal environment for each workload, as well as to protect the organization from price increases and instabilities from any one public cloud. As a result, administrators needed to understand and use four different interfaces to locate, manage and provision compute resources.

Solution

IHG moved all managed resources from VMware vRA to a cloud management platform that provided a single user interface and API, through which they could deploy complex apps to VMware and any of the four public clouds they used. This enabled them to manage these apps and their servers over the course of their lifecycle, allowing for business policy automation as well as adoption of best practices around server deployment and management.

IHG now also uses comprehensive visibility and intelligent automation to control VM sprawl and protect against unexpectedly large bills from vendors. Through the use of expiration dates for servers, configurable expiration behavior, visibility into all VMs across all technologies, quotas, cost tracking and easy de-provisioning of servers and services, IHG ensures that organizations only pay for what they need and use.

The 5 principles and your organization

To tame enterprise IT infrastructure complexity, IT leaders must adopt a flexible and extensible model for IT infrastructure management that relieves pressure on IT while freeing both the enterprise and developer teams to take advantage of emerging technologies. By adopting the five core principles of IT infrastructure management, your organization can improve time-to-value for your hybrid cloud and multi-cloud management strategy.

In the race for digital transformation, even in healthcare, there is a need to implement the right systems and solutions to maximise uptime, increase operational performance and to reduce downtime. However, it isn’t as simple as going out to a supermarket to buy a loaf of bread. There are so many potential solutions and systems on the market claiming that they do the job – but do they?

That’s the question that should arise whenever anyone is trying to resolve anything from latency to data storage. However, it’s not an easy question to answer, as the healthcare IT landscape is ever-changing.

Martin Bradburn, CEO of Peasoup Hosting, therefore comments: “For the healthcare sector, cloud infrastructure with its security and scalability can, and in some instances is already accelerating the development of clinical applications. Digital transformation is also changing the way healthcare operates, connecting remote clinical specialist resources directly to the patients for improved diagnosis on a worldwide scale.”

He adds that the use of cloud technology, more precisely “its ability to efficiently process and deliver data in a collaborative manner, analysing data into meaningful information… can relieve the current healthcare challenges. Equally, by using cloud IT infrastructure instead of the one on-premise healthcare, organisations pay more efficiently for what they use,” says Bradburn.

Hyperconverged benefits

In a January article for HealthTech magazine, ‘The Benefits of Hyperconvergence in Healthcare’, freelance journalist Tommy Peterson writes: “With expansions, mergers and an increased reliance on new technologies, the healthcare landscape is changing at dizzying speed.”

That’s because IT teams are being pushed to keep pace with digital transformation, to “navigate complex logistics and help to cut costs and deliver better patient care”, he says, while citing David Lehr, CIO of Luminis Health, a new regional healthcare system in Maryland, comprising Anne Arundel Medical Center and Doctors Community Medical Center.

Lehr adds: “We need to be good stewards of the investments our communities make in us. Driving up unnecessarily high costs on complicated IT infrastructure that takes an army of people to manage isn’t a great way to live up to that expectation.” So, in essence hyperconvergence is seen as the answer, which is to achieve through consolidation to save money and to enhance reliability; by using virtualisation to streamline applications; and he argues that simplification makes data more useful, secure and accessible by making it easier to move on-premise applications to the cloud.

David Trossell, CEO and CTO of Bridgeworks, argues hyperconverged systems have many benefits to the smaller healthcare providers. “By consolidating down multiple technologies from multiple providers for all the separate equipment that forms a modern data centre, along with all the differing support contracts and possible iteroparity issues that can occur, hyperconverged brings this all down to one or two providers,” says Trossell.

“Whilst hyperconvergence solves many day-to-day issues in the data centre the biggest threats these days emanate from outside of it in the form of cyber-attacks, and these attacks are getting more and more sophisticated in their approach,” Trossell adds. “Where once healthcare companies could revert to the backups and reload; these cyber criminals are content with just attacking online data, they have now even started to attack the backup software and backup data. This forces healthcare companies to seek new levels of data security that are on multiple levels and redundancy across multiple locations.”

Technology management

Hyperconvergence can also permit healthcare organisations to know when they need to expand or upgrade their technology. When everything has been tested, and whenever there is a need to speak to a supplier’s technical support, they will only need to make one call.

Bradburn adds: “Hyperconvergence is becoming the new standard in infrastructure; there are many commercial offerings that simplify the management and provide greater control of the local infrastructure, ensuring higher availability. The physical infrastructure sizes are reduced, with lower power and cooling requirements and with less management complexity, which has obvious cost-saving benefits in the healthcare sector and reduces the risks of failure.

“A cloud service takes this reduction in risk and complexity to the next level by removing all the infrastructure management. This compliments the healthcare environment, removing the traditional budget limitations with over or under provisioning. This also makes it easier to extend the infrastructure into the cloud to provide the elastic growth, ensuring the infrastructure is always the right size to meet the demands of the users and applications.”

Team collaboration

With applications becoming more mobile and web-based, Bradburn notes there is an increasing team collaboration trend in real-time product development, analysis and reporting. With this in mind, he argues that the cloud environment is “perfect for big data sets – archiving, pulling out and data manipulation is fast and effortless. This is vital for all services when the response is urgent.”

He adds that a cloud can provide an air gap and be bundled with cloud back-up and disaster recovery services. These services ‘minimalise and mitigate the risk of cyber-attacks such as hacking or ransomware’, as he puts it.

“It’s a great solution for all organisations seeking to leverage the cloud while keeping governance and privacy their highest priority. Cloud offers to healthcare organisations a cost-effective way to ensure complete availability of the IT infrastructure whilst limiting vulnerabilities.”

Transporting data

“Using the cloud as on offsite data protection facility has many advantages in cost and, if done correctly, an air-gapped depository”, says Trossell, who believes there is a need for new thinking about how data is transported. He says it’s imperative to move off-site data to a HIPPA compliance cloud, or to multiple cloud providers.

Placing your data in one data or cloud is highly risky. Healthcare companies therefore need to recognise that not only does their data need be backed up in several locations, but also “that until the last byte of backup data has been received by the cloud, there is no backup.”

Trossell explains that the ability to move data in a timely fashion to the cloud is governed by three factors: latency, packet loss and the bandwidth of the WAN link. He adds: “In many cases we see the assumption that if you want to improve the way in which data moves across the WAN, the answer is to throw bandwidth as the problem.” The trouble is that the existing bandwidth may be completely adequate, and so it may just be latency and packet loss that are affecting WAN performance.

WAN acceleration needed

“The norm is to employ WAN optimisation to resolve the issue”, reveals Trossell. The trouble is that this commonly has little effect on WAN performance – particularly when data must be encrypted. He adds: “The other go to technology in the WAN armory is SD-WAN. Whilst this is great technology; it doesn’t solve the WAN latency and packet loss issues.” The answer to mitigating the effects of latency and packet loss is WAN acceleration, which is also referred to as WAN data acceleration.

Trossell adds: “WAN acceleration approaches the transport of data in a new way. Rather than trying to squash the data down, it uses parallelisation techniques controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) to manage the flow of data across the WAN, whilst mitigating the effects of latency and packet loss.”

What’s great about it, in his view, is that the solution doesn’t change the data in any way, and it can be used in conjunction with existing back-up technologies and SD-WANs. This in turn will drive up the utilisation of the WAN bandwidth to 95%. He therefore notes: “That bandwidth you currently have may, may just be enough for your needs.”

Reducing network congestion

“Due to the nature of this sector, healthcare organisations are often multi-located with other organisations and third-party suppliers in different countries”, says Bradburn. “To improve data transfer across entire network, including the cloud and even for mobile healthcare workers, organisations can implement WAN data accelerators.” He emphasises that the technology reduces network congestion, while optimising the traffic traversing the WAN.

“This improves performance and acceleration of applications across WAN considerably, enabling the real time collaboration required for effective patient healthcare”, he explains, commenting that the healthcare sector has made a big shift in recent years to the public cloud. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are “pushing the cloud adoption further.” Many of these technologies, clouds and cloud service depend on WANs, and so they can be affected by the spectres of latency and packet loss.

Hyperconverged cloud benefits

However, Trossell believes that many of these technologies offer significant benefits to healthcare organisations. “Properly deployed and managed, cloud-based solutions offer healthcare organisations unprecedented opportunities to innovate, develop and deploy applications while still maintaining privacy, security and compliance.”

As for hyperconverged infrastructure, he says: “A hyperconverged infrastructure, by combining and virtualising the components of networking, security storage and compute into a single box or clusters of multiple boxes removes the complexity of a separated traditional model”.

Trossell summarises the key benefits as being:

The physical size of the infrastructure is reduced, saving power and cooling cost
The management of the infrastructure is simplified, reducing the overhead of staff management time and different skill sets for each component
The resilience and performance are higher are there are fewer interconnecting
components that can cause bottlenecks or failures
New standard: Hyperconvergence
Hyperconvergence, Trossell finds, is rapidly becoming the new standard in performance and reliability. It also benefits healthcare organisations without impacting on management costs, maintenance and hosting. Yet, there is no getting away from the importance of connectivity – particularly at a juncture when the uptake of cloud services is increasing.

“In some instances, the distance between on-premise servers and the cloud cause data transfer latency, which becomes the limiting factor, rather than the size of the bandwidth, especially when transferring large medical imagery,” says Trossell.

“More and more healthcare organisations implement WAN accelerators to mitigate the above issues. By adding WAN data accelerators, the data can be moved at a high speed across lower bandwidth connections over substantial distances, providing faster access to information and better patient care.”

Healthcare IT tips

In summary Bradburn and Trossell offer their 5 top tips for consolidating, simplifying, increasing the performance and reducing the cost of healthcare IT:

Research your cloud supplier – smaller cloud providers often offer predictable and simple pricing, unlimited bandwidth that’s preferable in the private sector. Always check the small prints and annexe. Some of the cloud providers offer a low cost per unit but additional charges for ingress and egress, which can make the whole solution twice as expensive

Deploy green technologies – we know that new technologies perform better and have a lower carbon footprint. Offsetting carbon emissions by planting more trees is one way to deal with climate change. But there are cloud suppliers that utilise ecological data centres. Some of them use a liquid technique for cooling IT infrastructure. Liquid cooling offers a much higher performance level ready for big data transfers. This is especially helpful in specific applications like x-ray or video surgeries

Consider data sovereignty – For example, GDPR compliance is one of the most important safeguards for any companies. Due to the nature of the healthcare sector it’s critical that personal data is stored securely and not replicated overseas. To stay competitive, some cloud providers use foreign data centres for data replication. So, don’t risk and check before you commit

Mitigate latency and packet loss – Use WAN Acceleration to improve WAN performance by mitigating latency and packet loss. Even SD-WANs will benefit from a WAN performance overlay

Consider the benefits of hyperconvergence and how it will enable your healthcare organisation’s own operational performance
So, where next for the hyperconverged healthcare cloud? Bradburn concludes that the next steps are centred around compliance and standards. He thinks there is a need to “provide a truly global healthcare service with access to specialists across the globe and to be able to call on their expertise for remote diagnosis.” For example, this could be about clinicians sharing best practice, data and techniques to prevent a coronavirus pandemic; to work together collaboratively from afar to find a cure for cancer.

This requires healthcare organisations to build “networks that enable the efficiency in data transfer, storage facilities and security are the key challenges, whilst also defining the standards to ensure data formats from clinical systems and personal health IoT devices are universally understood.”

By undertaking these steps, and with the support of WAN acceleration, Bradburn believes the true power of the cloud can be utilised in the healthcare services of the future.

The idea of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to more rapidly and accurately resolve IT incidents and manage alerts has been gaining steam in the past year.

While AIOps, as it’s frequently called, has spawned an entirely new market of startups, many enterprise IT leaders are playing a cautious hand so far – and for good reason.

There are risks, though. If an AIOps tool goes wrong out of the gates, IT and executive trust diminishes.

That’s why it’s critical to establish a workflow for success with any implementation before you even unbox a tool.

I’ve evaluated and deployed AIOps systems in large-scale enterprises and have developed enterprise software for IT operations, giving me unique perspectives on how to successfully deploy advanced technologies in large organizations.

Below, I’ve outlined a 7-step deployment process from planning, configurations, testing and through to launch.

Step 1: Plan
Start small with your project, by choosing one or two use cases/workloads that need improvement and have a team that is open to change.

Next assess what skills you have and where you may need some outside help or training, predominantly in data science and automation but also DevOps and continuous integration. IT Ops personnel will need enough understanding of how machine learning analytics work so that, when they turn control over to the system, they can audit to see how automated control is doing its job.

Determine the needed workflow changes to the IT operations process for the selected use case. For instance, if you are applying the AI system to manage alerts for the e-commerce site, what happens when correlated alerts involve multiple teams?

Understand data requirements for your use cases. If the data is not native to the tool or platform, then there may not be sufficient context.

As a result, you may need to supplement the data from a CMDB or alternate source.

Set goals for expected results for your first projects. This could include the volume of alert noise reduced, support ticket volume decline, faster incident resolution. Along with goals, establish the process for measuring and sharing results.

Develop a training plan for the system’s machine learning model. Set expectations early on as to what the trainers should expect in the early weeks of the implementation when the model is immature and lessons are being learned.

Step 2: Socialize
Now that you’ve prepped all who need to know about your plans, it’s time to take the next step in awareness by bringing the user community onboard. People may worry that their jobs will eventually go away or change for the worse, with a new fancy AI machine in play. Help people understand how the system works, benefits to the business and IT employees, and how it will change their current workflows. Find evangelists/power users in your organization to help spread the word and help train others when needed.

Step 3: Understand
The understanding phase is when you can really dig deep into the AIOps systems capabilities and best practices. Here’s what to focus on:

Learn how the AIOps system works and its data requirements. For example, if you are applying AI to alert correlation, you may need to include topology mapping to validate that the relationship exists between individual alerts.

What use cases and problems are being solved by the system? Common ones include anomaly detection, event correlation, and ticket routing but others may include notifications and alert suppression. Focus on those which are likely to deliver the fastest results, won’t have negative effects on operations and can provide quick wins for your team.

Step 4: Setup & Observe
Now it’s time to configure the system based on the use cases you have selected. If days or weeks of configuration is required to enable the machine learning to work, then the solution viability needs to be questioned.

IT operators should be able to see how the algorithms interact with the data and deliver suggestions, guidance, and analysis. It’s important that the software can illustrate the transparency of its actions by showing how conclusions were reached using which data sets.

Step 5: Recommend
Part of the power of AIOps is the ability to quickly and efficiently handle routine, predictable events. In such cases, defined by IT Ops, the system is configured to take over and apply a fix.

This saves time, ensures standard responses to known issues (such as VM/server utilization thresholds and patch updates) and also may prevent the development of more serious, cascading issues. In a safe environment–such as a sandbox or on a non-critical workload–allow the system to automate these routine tasks and then monitor the results.

Step 6. Deploy
Once you are comfortable with the results from your testing and pilots, now it is time to turn the system on in production. Run the system in testing mode for at least a couple of weeks to determine that the outputs are accurate and that users are happy with the recommendations.

Step 7: Review & Refine
After a few weeks in production, review the results against your original goals. For instance, if the goal was for alert noise reduction, what has been the improvement?

Aside from checking against specific metrics goals that you set out in the beginning, conduct a qualitative survey of users to learn about their challenges and what benefits they are seeing so far. Then you can refine, retrain and/or if needed, or select new use cases.

Algorithmic models get a bad rap for being black boxes prone to unfair bias. They’re not—if you have the right tools to explain their decisions.

That’s why Google’s new suite of cloud-based explainable AI (XAI) tools is a step in the right direction for companies looking to adopt AI. These tools decipher, and defend, how specific data factors contribute to the output of machine learning (ML) models built atop complex neural networks.

While Google XAI should draw welcome attention and help bust a few ML myths, it likely won’t spur adoption for all companies—especially financial-services firms that need fully interpretable underwriting models to decide who can borrow and who can’t.

First, Google’s tools (now in beta) require customers to build and implement their models within the Google Cloud. But most companies need explainability tools that can be used in any cloud environment or on local servers.

Second, Google XAI isn’t flexible enough to accommodate more robust models. Like other explainability tools, Google’s are rooted in complex mathematical principles, including a version of the Aumann-Shapley method that uses a series of foils—called “counterfactuals”—to perfect an algorithm’s output. Andrew Moore, head of Google Cloud’s AI unit, described the process to the BBC in London last month: “The neural network asks itself, for example, ‘Suppose I hadn’t been able to look at the shirt color of the person walking into the store. Would that have changed my estimate of how quickly they were walking?’ By doing many counterfactuals, it gradually builds up a picture of what it is and isn’t paying attention to when it’s making a prediction.”

As compelling as that approach sounds, Google XAI won’t work with so-called ensembled models that weave together multiple models using diverse or competing techniques. “Ensembling” boosts the predictive power of AI credit scoring—assuming the collective system can be examined to assess how decisions are being made—and will become standard as lenders embrace ML over the next few years. For now, Google provides limited support for tree-based models and ensembles of trees and neural networks.

Third, while the Google AI “What-If” tool is pretty clever and allows modelers to test different scenarios at a glance, Google’s user interface could be tricky to use. Developers will have to learn a specific coding language and configuration convention to access explainability functions.

Last, Google’s explainability package is aimed primarily at data scientists—not credit analysts working for heavily regulated financial-services firms. In theory, data scientists at banks could build models using Google’s tools. But those same folks would need to build additional tools to test their models for accuracy and fairness and to generate all the compliance reporting required by regulators.

So while Google now offers a solid explainability tool for cloud-based neural networks, the vast majority of end-users will continue to demand more complete solutions that address their regulatory risk. Those solutions should include managed services (including expert help from a dedicated team), risk-management documentation (MRM) and model monitoring tailored for that industry, underwriting expertise and experience working with the largest lenders and, not least, a track record of deploying models that surpass regulatory scrutiny.

Google is taking important first steps to bring more transparency to the world of ML. That’s encouraging because the sooner our industry cracks open those scary black boxes, the better—for lenders, consumers, and the tech community.

What if we could speak with our devices, cars, and homes just as easily as we do with our friends?

Conversation is the bedrock of human communication, a transformative tool that reveals what’s inside our heads and hearts. Voice is our primary means of connecting with others—and, increasingly, it’s how we want to engage with the machines around us, too.

Thanks to advances in speech recognition, artificial intelligence, neural networks, and processing power, we can tap into the capabilities of our machines simply by speaking. The virtual assistants that enable these interactions live inside all sorts of products, from wristwatches and smart speakers to microwave ovens and eyeglasses.

We’re now entering a new age of voice computing, and it’s enabling opportunities and experiences that once seemed possible only in sci-fi movies.

But there’s a hitch: Conversation is an incredibly hard problem for algorithms to master.

A look at the current landscape
Today’s AI technology allows machines to drive cars, predict stock prices, manage global-scale logistics, search for a cure for cancer, create sophisticated playlists, and defeat grandmasters at chess. However, most AI struggles to carry on a simple chat, like the one you’d have with a neighbor over a backyard fence.

Some of the latest efforts, such as Google Duplex, are closing the gap. But the art of human conversation, a task so simple that toddlers can do it, can be maddeningly difficult for even very sophisticated machines. This is one reason why many of us are still saddled at home with a dozen confusing remote controls that only one person, usually a teen, knows how to operate.

But that is changing fast. Virtual assistants are already on their way to becoming ubiquitous. According to eMarketer, nearly 40% of internet users already use voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri, Bixby, and Cortana. And with each passing month, conversational AI is becoming smarter and less constrained by specific use cases—which means not only that most households may soon trade in those myriad controllers for a voice assistant but also that those voice assistants will grow more human-like, intuitive, and useful.

From chatbots for customer service to voice assistants that let consumers access a business’s services through a smart speaker, voice-based AI is already part of the daily routine for millions of people. And demand for this kind of technology in every sector and walk of life is only going to increase: The global conversational AI market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of just over 30% between 2019 and 2024, according to MarketsandMarkets.

The explosion of conversational AI use cases has been astounding—and I’m optimistic that the industry will continue to deliver as we make progress on the fundamental challenges of conversation. Gartner predicts “by 2021, nearly one in six customer service interactions globally will be handled by AI. We expect that 40% of chatbot/virtual assistant applications launched in 2018 will have been abandoned by 2020.”

The likelihood that so many applications will be quickly abandoned points to the improvements that still need to be made—which raises two obvious questions: How do these conversational technologies work? And how are they being made better?

Listening is easy. Understanding is tough.
Conversation is second nature for humans, but conversational AI is extraordinarily difficult for machines. Why is that? Let’s deconstruct what happens when you participate in a conversation.

1. First, you listen.

You process sound waves, filter out background noise and other voices, compensate for the speaker’s accent (and the head cold they might have), and turn that audio signal into a sequence of words. For machines, this phase is called speech recognition, or speech-to-text conversion.

2. Next, you understand.

This involves correcting misheard words as well as sorting through homonyms, homophones, and unknown words. For example, the word “bank” has different meanings when you’re fishing, driving, shooting pool, or handling money. This is called semantic understanding. For machines, this step is where it starts to get tricky.

3. You consider the context.

This includes conversational context (what was previously said in this conversation), personal context (your relationship with the speaker), situational context (what’s happening where you’re talking), and world context (what’s happening on a more global scale). For example, someone may ask you how the weather looks on a cloudy day, but what they really want to know is whether they should bring an umbrella when they go outside or cancel the ski trip they were planning for the weekend. This is called natural language understanding, or NLU. Machines in general still struggle with this, so they often fail to understand the underlying meaning, intent, and purpose of an utterance.

4. After the speech is understood, you need to determine the kind of message that will satisfy the question.

This is called response generation, and it’s influenced by the same contextual nuances we’ve seen before, such as the identity of the speaker and the situation in which the exchange occurs. A simple request like “Do you take American Express?” might be addressed with a simple “no.” That’s informative, but it’s not very useful. “No, but we take Visa” is a more natural human response. To do this, you need to understand the speaker’s underlying intent (in this case, to pay with a credit card) and respond in a manner that satisfies the intent, not just the literal interpretation of the words. Because NLU is difficult, generating an appropriate response that’s relevant to the speaker’s intent and purpose is also difficult.

5. You now need to determine the specific expression of the message, or the actual words you’ll use to respond.

This is called natural language generation, or NLG. Machines typically do this using templated responses, which sound unnatural to humans. Choosing the right words to use is a difficult process, even for humans, as it’s dependent on context (see step 3) and subject to misinterpretation (see step 2).

6. And finally, you need to say those words out loud.

This is called speech synthesis, or text-to-speech conversion. This step, like the first one, is relatively simple for machines to complete; it’s everything in between that remains challenging.

Closing the gap
What’s fascinating is that we humans do all of this in a fraction of a second—seemingly without thinking and often even before the other person has completed their turn—while simultaneously engaged in other complex activities like washing dishes, changing diapers, or dancing in a noisy disco.

All of this is very hard to model in a computer, and most machines aren’t anywhere close to doing it reliably and consistently except in highly constrained situations—though researchers, such as the Google Brain team that recently introduced the Meena neural network to help companies build better chatbots, are closing the gap all the time.

Such progress is great news, adding to the numerous ways in which conversational AI is already helping businesses to:

Build interfaces that enable near-human conversation
Offer more personalized and intuitive customer care
Understand how people feel about their products and brand
Use machine learning models to score the perceived impact a comment might have on a conversation
Add multilingual support to serve more people around the world
These solutions are available as APIs, meaning the technology has been packaged up in a way that you can simply use it without having to understand how the algorithms work.

The building blocks of conversational AI can improve many tasks outside of the office as well. Voice recognition and real-time conversation via an assortment of devices will be an essential part of a smart home, used in everything from temperature control to calendar creation to online purchasing, as well as smart cars, retail shopping, and many other scenarios.

We’re on a path to creating solutions that are much closer to what we need. The AI community has already made enormous strides, and I’m optimistic we’ll make even greater progress in the next few years. Broadcom (perhaps still better known as CA) used this year’s Arcati Mainframe Yearbook to highlight the mainframe development revolution and the growth in open source tools.

They said that tools, like the green screens of ISPF and the Eclipse desktop IDE, enhanced with proprietary plugins have served mainframe application developers well over the years. However, there are changes in the larger world of development that are creating the conditions for a revolution in mainframe tooling.

With experienced mainframers retiring, those likely to fill their roles prefer modern IDEs, especially Visual Studio Code. The annual Stack Overflow Developer Survey found that the popularity of Visual Studio Code grew from 34.9% to 50.7%, while Eclipse fell from 18.9% to 14.4%. The same survey found that Python is the most sought-after scripting language skill among developers.

According to 451 Research, 24% of companies are releasing application software daily or hourly. DORA’s State of DevOps report shows 20% of companies deploy multiple times per day. Software delivery expectations have changed, with continuous deployment becoming the new normal and, to remain vital, mainframe application development needs to match these frequencies.
