You will have to create an account on GitHub so, you will go to your browser and you will go to GitHub so, you will say GitHub and the very first website you will get that and github.com so, you will go there and you will create your account so, you will add your you will pick a username you can give some email id or valid email id and then choose a password and then you will sign up for GitHub you will get a link in your email to verify your account and then you will verify and then finally you will sign in so you already will have an account so you will just sign in to your account and now there you will get that page and there you will see that start a project a button so, this is the step no. two

Step 2: Start a project = create a repository

Then you will have to start a new project so you will go and start a new a project and you can give any name so you will give that is a test project and then you will give some description which will optional and make it public and then you will create the repository so click on create a repository and there you will have that new repository and you will have a link of that repository there so now you will go back.

How to clone the repository in eclipse?

Now, what will you do is step number three is

You will start your eclipse so you will go to your eclipse now so that will be an eclipse and you will have to go to git repository perspective so will you see this open perspective button there you will click on that open perspective and then you from there you will have to select git repository also you will start typing git repository there and you will get this perspective and git repository so select git repositories and there you will get that git repositories window and there you will have buttons so that will be an add an existing local git repository that button will be to clone of your git repository and the clone to this view and then you will have to create you git repository so in your case you will already have created your git repository so you will click on that clone or git repository and add that grown to that view so you will click there and before you will add so step no. four will be

Step 4: Go to perspective >> git repositories and click on add git repository

Now, you will add the URL there so you will copy that URL from there that just copy it from there and then go back to eclipse and just paste it there it will take all the hosts and repository path itself and then you will give your authentication which will be your user and the password of GitHub account and even if you will not give it will ask you later on so if you will say next there so it will search for the repository and then finally it will have given you that window you will select next again and then it will give you the local directory so you will change that if you want and then you will say finish and you will see that progress there so it will be cloning the repository from the GitHub remote repository and finally you will see that project will have come there so you will have got your repository into your eclipse now the next thing is you will have to create a project in eclipse and add to this repository. I hope, all this will make you more eager to learn about what you can do with GitHub projects and eclipse.

How to add eclipse project to GitHub repository?

So, step no. five is

Step 5: Create a project in eclipse

So, you will create any project so you will say new java project you will also click there file new and then select the java project so there you will give some name you will give the same name as well that will test project and say finish so you will have got your test project there now what you will do is you will do a right click on that project and then you will go to team and then you will select share project and there it will ask you for the repository and now you will see you will have caught that test project repository there and that will be displayed only once you will have added project in the repository or you will have clone the repository so just select that repository and then you will say finish and now this project will be added to that repository and you will see that icon has also been changed now if you will back to your repository on GitHub and you will refresh it you will not find anything any change there as of now the reason is because you do will have not done any commit or you will have not done any push to the repository so as of now that will be that will look like as before so you will see that will be the same view. Let me add the steps so step no. 6 will be

Step 6: Do a right-click on project >> share >> Add to Git repository

And finally you will do some changes or you will do a commit so, you will do a commit first so you will again do a right-click and go to team and now you will see you will have got all these options and that will come only after you will have added the project to the repository so now you will click on commit and now it will have given you all these changes or additions that you will have done you will select all or you will select the ones that you want to commit and drag and drop to the stage changes area so now you will have staged that you will also add some commit message first commit and then you will do commit and then push or you will do commit and push at one go so you will say commit and push and it will give you that dialog boxes you will say next so you will write it down and it will ask you for the username and password and there will be user and password of your GitHub so your username will whatever and you will add your password and now finally it will give you the branch and as of now you will have only master branch so you will say finish and you will see you will give your username and password again and you will also store this username and password so you will not have to give it every time but as of now you will just give it and you will see the progress there and meanwhile that will have done.    

How to commit, push and pull the changes?

Then step no. seven will be

Step 7: commit and push the project to the repository

You will add commit and push the project to the repository and then step 8 will be whenever you will make any change

So as of now that will have done and now if you will go to your repository and refresh it you will see that would now show you your project and as well as your commit so you will refresh and see and definitely you will see that you will have got your test project there if you will click there you will get that details inside that test project and you will see all these details and also you will see the first commit there which will have happened just two minutes ago and now if you will make any changes for example: you will create a new class there so you will create a new test class there and now and anytime & every time you will make any change you will just go to do a right click on the project go to team you will say commit and you will see that will show you the changes and you will then add a message added class test dot java and then commit and push so that will commit you will add your username and password and that would commit the changes again to the remote repository and if you will go back to your remote repository and refresh that again you will now see you will have got that change added class test java and if you will go inside the source you will have your test dot java class there so this is how you will make sure all your changes will be committed to your remote repository and this is how you will do a pull push and commit so you will also for example: go to team and then you will have all these options there you will do a pull you will pull or push from a particular branch and then you will commit in all these changes this is how you will add your GitHub project to eclipse and then will push and pull so, I hope, all these lessons will be beneficial for you. These fundamental steps will give you the correct path in the journey of adding the GitHub project to eclipse.

The increasing mobility of data, as it ping-pongs between clouds, data centers and the edge, has made it an easier target of cybercrime groups, which has put a premium on the encryption of that data in recent years.

Cybersecurity vendors have stepped up, developing strong and efficient ways to encrypt data both while it’s at rest and when it’s in transit. However, there is a glaring weakness. When the data is being processed, analyzed or used by applications in another way, it needs to be unencrypted, making it more vulnerable to attack.

To counter this, some major IT vendors are pushing forward with a decades-old encryption idea that was first talked about in the late 1970s but not successfully demonstrated for the first time until 2009. Since then, interest in fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) has increased, largely paralleling the rise of cloud computing.

Putting a Focus on FHE
FHE enables data to remain encrypted even as it is processed and analyzed, whether that’s in the cloud or in third-party environments. The data is protected against cybercriminals as well as others who are not supposed to see it. Once the mathematical operations, such as calculations, are run on the encrypted data, the results are decrypted and corrected.

In recent months, the list of interested vendors has included IBM, which in December announced its Security Homomorphic Encryption Services, a managed offering hosted on the IBM Cloud. Big Blue has been active in the development for years – it was an IBM researcher who ran the 2009 demonstration – and earlier last year conducted successful FHE field trials. The company also released an FHE toolkit for Apple’s MacOS and iOS operating systems, with Android and Linux being added later.

“Fully homomorphic encryption holds tremendous potential for the future of privacy and cloud computing, but businesses must begin learning about and experimenting with FHE before they can take full advantage of what it has to offer,” IBM Security CTO Sridhar Muppidi said in a statement at the time.

Microsoft’s SEAL (Simple Encrypted Arithmetic Library) is another such effort, an open-source software library created by researchers at the company that uses multiple forms of homomorphic encryption. It’s available on GitHub.

DARPA Gets In on the Effort
Intel, which has been adding security features to its silicon for years and has been working on FHE techniques, was picked earlier this year by the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to work with Microsoft to create an ASIC chip for homomorphic encryption. DARPA will use the accelerator in DARPA’s Data Protection in Virtual Environments (DRPIVE) program to create the hardware needed to reduce the compute power and time that currently is required to run FHE operations. Intel will lead one of four research teams; the other three will be headed by software makers Duality Technologies – which uses homomorphic encryption in its Duality SecurePlus platform – and Galois and a Silicon Valley-based nonprofit scientific research institute, SRI International.

Earlier this month, Google released a collection of open-source libraries that can be used to implement FHE in modern workloads and made them available on GitHub.

“As cloud computing services continue to see widespread adoption, it becomes increasingly important for service providers to guarantee the security and privacy of the data of their customers,” Google researchers wrote in a paper released on GitHub.

Homomorphic Encryption a Long Time Coming
The FHE demo in 2009 proved the technology could work, but it was too slow and consumed too much compute power to be put to use and it was too expensive and required expertise in cryptography. However, such challenges are being addressed.

“Fortunately, over the last few years, FHE has become less computationally intensive, due to significant progress in hardware acceleration, efficient optimizations, and low-level implementations,” the Google researchers wrote.

Still, they added, for adoption of FHE to be widespread, tools are needed to enable software developers without cryptographic expertise to integrate homomorphic encryption into their applications. Dirk Schrader, global vice president of security research at New Net Technologies, agreed. He said a hurdle will be the application of FHE “where the analytics of large data sets will be used for benchmarking individuals, as seen in all those fitness applications or health monitors. Consumerization has the intrinsic tendency to include the question of cost of operation and maintenance, and applying high-end cryptography requires solid knowledge and development skills.”

Digital Health Projects to Benefit
Despite the remaining hurdles, Google, IBM, Microsoft and others are pushing to make it easier for developers to leverage the technology. Bringing FHE to the point where it could be used by vendors and developers would be helpful to organizations in a range of industries, Schrader, whose company makes cybersecurity and compliance software, told eSecurity Planet.

FHE “can solve some of the pressing issues arising out of the conflict to analyze large sums of data points generated by many individuals,” he said. “Many countries are considering some kind of digital health initiatives, where the promise to find better cures is countered by the fear [of losing] privacy. [Homomorphic encryption] offers an interesting approach here by allowing the analysis of encrypted data for purposes that are not related to an individual data set.”

Other possible uses include autonomous public transportation analyzing users’ locations to predict the load in a highly populated urban area, he said, adding that big data “is based on the promise to distill previously undiscovered opportunities from large amounts of data and has, so far with good reason, earned criticism from data privacy advocates.”

A Small but Growing Market
The FHE market is small but expected to grow in the coming years, with market research firm The Insight Partners predicting it will increase from $120.12 million in 2019 to $246.29 million by 2027, an average of 9.7 percent a year. Most of the use will be in North America and Europe, though the Asia-Pacific region stands to see the fastest growth. IBM noted that Gartner forecasts that while currently fewer than 1 percent of companies have the budget for projects that include FHE, that number will be more than 20 percent by 2026.

All this is happening as businesses increasingly adopt hybrid cloud and multi-cloud strategies. In its annual State of the Cloud report, IT management software maker Flexera found that 92 percent of enterprises have embraced a multi-cloud environment and 80 percent have hybrid clouds. Meanwhile, the number of government regulations and standards, such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), are putting growing pressure on enterprises to ensure that the data they collect, store, analyze and act on, is protected from bad actors and prying eyes. Being able to leverage FHE would give them another tool to use to do just that.

The Wyoming Department of Health knows it accidentally published the personal information of 164,000 residents on a public website earlier this year. But it remains a mystery as to whether any bad actors accessed the data before the department discovered the mistake and took the files offline.

The roughly 54 files that were uploaded to GitHub.com contained names, dates of birth, addresses, some driver’s license numbers and results for COVID-19 and alcohol breath tests.

Between the data’s upload in January and deletion in March, roughly 13 IP addresses appear to have accessed the data in some form or fashion, Department of Health Interim Director Stefan Johansson said Thursday.

“We cannot determine who that was or if these were web crawlers that comb all websites basically all the time,” Johansson told the Legislature’s Joint Labor, Health and Social Services Committee. “That’s something that we don’t know.”

It’s possible that no one obtained a copy of the data before it was scrubbed from the internet. However, under federal regulations and the department’s policies, “we assume the worst and we act as if the worst had happened,” Johansson said.

If a malicious actor did obtain the data files, they could potentially use the information for “online targeting,” Johansson said, such as by trying to gain access to a person’s social media accounts or deploying some kind of phishing scam to obtain more sensitive and potentially lucrative information. The interim director noted that “the highly sensitive data” — such as Social Security numbers, insurance and financial information — “was not involved in this.”

For the roughly 164,000 people whose personal information was publicly exposed, the department is offering identity theft protection services and operating a phone line to field questions.

After the department publicly announced the breach, a scammer or group of scammers tried to capitalize, posing as the department in phone calls and trying to convince residents to give up their personal information. The department quickly issued a warning to the public.

“We tried to do our best to put out information … to make sure that hopefully they knew that we would never call and ask for that type of information, even after an event like this,” Johansson said.

As for how the data breach occurred, Johansson said the department had been using the website GitHub to manage and update computer code related to various public health data reporting requirements. However, when posting a long string of code, one analyst failed to include a certain “NOR function” that would have told the program to skip over the sensitive files, Johansson said. Without that function, the sensitive files were instead called and uploaded to GitHub’s public repository, he said.

The error “was absolutely inadvertent and accidental,” the interim director added. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the department threw a lot of work and a lot of employees at public health efforts — and in that environment, “you run the risk of making mistakes.”

“We’ve all equated it somewhat to wartime,” Johansson said, “and I think that’s part of the reason that you risk some quality measures slipping. And that’s certainly what happened here.”

Two employees were involved with the breach: One no longer works for the Department of Health, while the other “has received sanctions, additional training, and progessive disciplinary actions have been taken,” Johansson said.

Department of Health Director Mike Ceballos and state Chief Information Officer Gordon Knopp both resigned in the wake of the breach, though they did not announce whether their departures were directly related to the incident.

Although the breach was “certainly not the fault of the platform” — Johansson in fact made a point of praising the site for its help — he said the department is no longer using GitHub for any purposes. The department also reviewed and updated all of its privacy and security policies, including how often they train employees on best practices.

Gert Drapers and Omri Gazitt have more than six decades of experience working in engineering and product leadership roles at companies including Microsoft, HP Cloud, Puppet, and Hulu. Now they’re teaming up on a new startup building authorization-as-a-service software.

Aserto announced a $5.1 million seed round from investors including former Snowflake CEO Bob Muglia and GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner. Netlify CEO Mathias Billman Christensen invested, as did Costanoa Ventures and Heavybit Industries.

The Seattle startup just launched earlier this year and is in private beta for its product that aims to help early-stage B2B software-as-a-service companies with authorization needs.

“We’ve seen developer API’s for everything under the sun — payments (Stripe), text messaging (Twilio), and authentication (Auth0), but there’s been a glaring hole in the market for authorization solutions,” said Gazitt, who was previously chief product officer of Puppet and head of product at Xbox. “The reason is that authorization is a harder technical challenge, because it is in the critical path of each application request.”

The identity and access management market is growing, especially in the past year with the shift to remote work and evidenced by Okta’s recent $6.5 billion acquisition of Seattle-area startup Auth0. Cloud security is also top of mind for many enterprise companies.

Gazitt said Aserto is the “chocolate” to Auth0’s “peanut butter.” Auth0 is a developer-focused authentication-as-a-service system, while Aserto focuses on authorization. Okta notes that “authentication confirms that users are who they say they are” while “authorization gives those users permission to access a resource.”

Aserto says its software provides 80% of the heavy lifting required to build enterprise-ready permissions and RBAC, or role-based access control.

Gazzit also spent time as an exec at HP Cloud and founded a Seattle startup called BuiltSteady. Drapers was most recently chief software architect at Hulu and held the same role at Puppet. He spent nearly 23 years at Microsoft where he was a top engineer working on Xbox Live, Azure, Visual Studio, and other products. Gazzit was a manager on various Microsoft server and web services teams.

Aserto has six employees and plans to double headcount this year.

“Authorization is an even bigger, unaddressed problem, than the multi-billion dollar authentication category,” said Casey Aylward, principal at Costanoa Ventures. “There is a dire need for a developer-centric approach like Aserto’s. And we saw no better team to do it.”

GitHub announced on Friday their updated community guidelines that explain how the company will deal with exploits and malware samples hosted on their service.

To give some background behind the new policy changes, security researcher Nguyen Jang uploaded a proof-of-concept exploit (PoC) to GitHub in March for the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Logon vulnerability.

Soon after uploading the exploit, Jang received an email from Microsoft-owned GitHub stating that PoC exploit was removed as it violated the Acceptable Use Policies.
In a statement to Bleeping Computer, GitHub said they took down the PoC to protect Microsoft Exchange servers that were being heavily exploited at the time using the vulnerability.
However, GitHub faced immediate backlash from security researchers who felt that GitHub was policing the disclosure of legitimate security research simply because it was affecting a Microsoft product.

GitHub releases updated guidelines
In April, GitHub issued a ‘call for feedback’ to the cybersecurity community regarding their policies for malware and exploits hosted on GitHub.

After a month of input, GitHub officially announced yesterday that repositories created to host malware for malicious campaigns, act as a command and control server, or are used to distribute malicious scripts, are prohibited.

However, the uploading of PoC exploits and malware are permitted as long as they have a dual-user purpose.

In the context of malware and exploits, dual-use means content that can be used for the positive sharing of new information and research while at the same time can also be used for malicious purposes.

The key changes added to the GitHub guidelines are summarized below:

We explicitly permit dual-use security technologies and content related to research into vulnerabilities, malware, and exploits. We understand that many security research projects on GitHub are dual-use and broadly beneficial to the security community. We assume positive intention and use of these projects to promote and drive improvements across the ecosystem. This change modifies previously broad language that could be misinterpreted as hostile toward projects with dual-use, clarifying that such projects are welcome.
We have clarified how and when we may disrupt ongoing attacks that are leveraging the GitHub platform as an exploit or malware content delivery network (CDN). We do not allow use of GitHub in direct support of unlawful attacks that cause technical harm, which we’ve further defined as overconsumption of resources, physical damage, downtime, denial of service, or data loss.
We made clear that we have an appeals and reinstatement process directly in this policy. We allow our users to appeal decisions to restrict their content or account access. This is especially important in the security research context, so we’ve very clearly and directly called out the ability for affected users to appeal action taken against their content.
We’ve suggested a means by which parties may resolve disputes prior to escalating and reporting abuse to GitHub. This appears in the form of a recommendation to leverage an optional SECURITY.md file for the project to provide contact information to resolve abuse reports. This encourages members of our community to resolve conflicts directly with project maintainers without requiring formal GitHub abuse reports.
While dual-use content is allowed, the new GitHub guidelines around PoCs and malware states that they retain the right to remove dual-use content, such as exploits or malware, to disrupt active attacks or malware campaigns utilizing GitHub.

GitHub states that they continue to support community feedback regarding their policies to continue improving their policies.

As Kermit the Frog famously sang, “it’s not easy being green,” yet it’s critical for our planet’s survival that we figure it out.

Ironically, the very tech we’re using to help in that effort could be making things worse. A 2019 survey conducted by Informa revealed that while datacentres use 3 percent of the world’s electricity, energy efficiency was only number four on IT leaders’ priority lists when creating a new datacentre. Yet those datacentres run the artificial intelligence and machine learning being used to understand and combat greenhouse gas emissions.

The price of AI
A 2019 report from the University of Massachusetts found that training and tuning a deep neural network can create the equivalent CO2 emissions of those produced in anything from just over two years of an average American’s life to more than seventeen years’ worth (depending on the model). Another study, also from 2019, found that the computations needed for deep learning research increased by 300,000x (no, that is not a typo!) between 2012 and 2018.

Going green
In an effort to combat the runaway emissions, at the Microsoft BUILD virtual conference last week, Microsoft, Accenture, GitHub, and ThoughtWorks announced that they have teamed up as founding members of the Green Software Foundation, a non-profit organization with the mission of creating an ecosystem of people, standards, tools, and best practices for building green software. It is part of the Joint Development Foundation Projects, an affiliate of the Linux Foundation.

What is green software
So what is green software? Sajay Podder, technology sustainability innovation lead at
Accenture explained. “The term green software relates to the design, development and use of software, and is a term we use to help companies consider the carbon emissions related to software with the intent to keep emissions as low as possible. It is important because while digital technologies are key to protecting the environment, that proliferation is also resulting in software’s growing carbon footprint,” he said. “But we also realize that it’s a new field, requiring new skills, new standards, new training and new tooling.” He said that when he discovered that a team at Microsoft was also looking at the issues, they began discussions about a collaboration, and the Green Software Foundation was born.

It’s all about the community, added Jeff Sandquist, corporate vice president of developer relations at Microsoft. Developers want to build apps that consider their impact on the

climate, and no one company or individual can do it alone. “For that to happen, we need to understand how to build green software, and folks need tools, and they need the knowledge to become qualified wherever they are in the world, on a really important matter,” he said. “And so our goal with this is to really establish best practices, set up standards, really work together. We’ll work together to be able to make sure that we create a great community of green software practitioners.”

Erica Brescia, chief operating officer at GitHub, said that GitHub joined with the goal to make it easier for developers to use and contribute to the global climate solution by empowering them with the right visibility and the right tools, so they can create and maintain green software themselves.

For ThoughtWorks, said Elise Zelechowski, global head of diversity, equity and inclusion, sustainability and social

change, sustainability and climate change mitigation is a priority. “We believe that the tech sector has a really important role to play here in taking action on climate,” she said. “We’re increasingly seeing our clients coming to us for thought leadership tools and advice on this. And while there’s a desire to take action, it’s not always clear where to start for them. This is according to security specialists at communications technology company Twilio, who have launched a free tool that warns developers when they accidentally include sensitive information in their code before it’s uploaded to a repository.

Deadshot monitors GitHub pull requests in real time. The open source tool flags the potential inclusion of sensitive data in any code, as well as “changes to sensitive functionality”.

According to Laxman Eppalagudem, a senior product security engineer at Twilio who worked on the project, no one can manually monitor an organization’s entire codebase. So, his team created an automated scanning tool to find and flag sensitive data.

‘Deploy and forget’
Deadshot is intended to work as a “deploy and forget” tool. As it runs in every commit, the tool should alert the project owners before any data leaves the organization.

Security teams can specify what Deadshot monitors, and any alerts will be sent out via Slack or a Jira ticket.

“Twilio’s product security team identified a number of static secrets committed to the default branches of code repositories,” Yashvier Kosaraju, senior manager for product security at Twilio told The Daily Swig.

“Having secrets in code is, of course, not a good security posture. We found that most published secrets came from unsuspecting developers that unknowingly committed them to GitHub.

“We built Deadshot as a way to notify developers of secrets in their PRs [pull requests] and to help developers and their companies improve their security practices.”

Leaky commits
The accidental release of secrets and credentials to code repos is a significant problem, according to Kosaraju. He cites a GitGuardian report that identified over two million secrets in public GitHub repositories in 2020.

“It’s intended to replace the need to manually review code pull requests for sensitive data commits, which we all know doesn’t scale,” he said.

Deadshot has been designed so it can only be installed on Github accounts by the organization’s administrators.

This, Kosaraju said, reduces the danger of criminal hackers using Deadshot for illicit gains.

“Scripts and bots doing this type of scanning over GitHub and other code repositories are already well-established on the offensive side,” security consultant James Bore told The Daily Swig.

“It’s good to see it incorporated in a tool, as outside of ransomware these are the types of security failures I come across most option impacting companies, many times without their knowledge if the attacker is subtle.”

GitHub already has security scanning capabilities, Blore noted. Developers could also use the open source tool Gittyleaks to scan for API keys, passwords and other sensitive data.

Twilio is actively looking for feedback and feature requests from Deadshot users and the open source community, Kosaraju said.

During its Satellite India event held on Friday, GitHub announced that it was launching three new programs for students, developers and startups at the code hosting and collaboration platform’s two-day virtual event.

GitHub COO Erica Brescia said that the first program is aimed at developers in the country called the GitHub Open Source Grants program, which will offer ₹1 crore in grants to open-source ‘extremely valuable’ projects that set the bar high for innovation in the country and further the goal of increasing contributions to open-source software around the globe, the company stated.

In a country where software developers are constantly updating themselves and eager to put their skills to good use and contribute to open source projects, GitHub says that last year, the number of students that participated in its GitHub Campus program increased by a whopping 142 percent. Meanwhile, its Student Developer Pack saw over one lakh signups and over a hundred colleges in India adopted the company’s campus offering.

The company will now offer GitHub Externships in the country, to give students a chance to interface with companies in the country by facilitating fellowship programs so they can gain skills and the ability to succeed in an enterprise environment. This will benefit students joining companies fresh out of college who want to know more about the organisations they want to work for in the future.

During a discussion held after the event, GitHub India’s country head Maneesh Sharma explained that the company’s partnerships with colleges and higher educational institutions would help students who wanted to get started with open-source technology software, through summer programs. Sharma also said that the company had seen contributions from Indian users in projects including but not limited to — machine learning, data warehousing, development of Android and other operating systems and much more.

The third program launched by GitHub on Friday was actually an extension of its successful Github Accelerate program that was launched last year and saw almost 200 startups (including AirMeet, Kawa Space, and ClearQuote) sign up for the pilot program. The company is now extending GitHub Accelerate to startup accelerators, incubators and more venture partners – which means the program’s eligibility has now been widened to accommodate over a thousand new startups this year.

Brescia also stated that over 1.8 million new developers from the country had joined GitHub over the past year, which brings the number of developers on the platform from India up to 5.8 million. But the platform’s metrics have shown an uptick in other areas too — contributions from Indian users on GitHub rose by 75 percent over the past year as opposed to 40 percent for the rest of the world, the company stated.

This announcement follows GitHub’s recent partnership with National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) as part of the latter’s FutureSkills program, which is working towards upskilling the current IT workforce, with a goal of two million from the current workforce and another two million from those fresh out of college. Github has ignited a firestorm after the Microsoft-owned code-sharing repository removed a proof-of-concept exploit for critical vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange that have led to as many as 100,000 server infections in recent weeks.

ProxyLogon is the name that researchers have given both to the four Exchange vulnerabilities under attack in the wild and the code that exploits them. Researchers say that Hafnium, a state-sponsored hacking group based in China, started exploiting ProxyLogon in January, and within a few weeks, five other APTs—short for advanced persistent threat groups—followed suit. To date, no fewer than 10 APTs have used ProxyLogon to target servers around the world.

Microsoft issued emergency patches last week, but as of Tuesday, an estimated 125,000 Exchange servers had yet to install it, security firm Palo Alto Networks said. The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have warned that ProxyLogon poses a serious threat to businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies that remain vulnerable.
On Wednesday, a researcher published what’s believed to be the first largely working proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for the vulnerabilities. Based in Vietnam, the researcher also published a post on Medium describing how the exploit works. With a few tweaks, hackers would have most of what they needed to launch their own in-the-wild RCEs, security speak for remote code execution exploits.

Publishing PoC exploits for patched vulnerabilities is a standard practice among security researchers. It helps them understand how the attacks work so that they can build better defenses. The open source Metasploit hacking framework provides all the tools needed to exploit tens of thousands of patched exploits and is used by black hats and white hats alike.

Within hours of the PoC going live, however, Github removed it. By Thursday, some researchers were fuming about the takedown. Critics accused Microsoft of censoring content of vital interest to the security community because it harmed Microsoft interests. Some critics pledged to remove large bodies of their work on Github in response.

“Wow, I am completely speechless here,” Dave Kennedy, founder of security firm TrustedSec, wrote on Twitter. “Microsoft really did remove the PoC code from Github. This is huge, removing a security researcher’s code from GitHub against their own product and which has already been patched.”

A new report, the 2021 State of Secrets Sprawl on GitHub, published today by GitGuardian, a provider of a tool for monitoring usage of application secrets, suggests developers are not especially good at keeping those secrets safe.

Based on an analysis of every single commit made to GitHub, the report finds there has been a 20% year-over-year increase in the number of secrets – such as application programming interface (API) keys, private keys, certificates, usernames and passwords – discovered on a public repository.

Developers, as they build an application, make secrets easily accessible as plain text for the sake of convenience. However, when those applications are deployed in a production environment, developers often forget to delete the secrets they stored in GitHub.

GitGuardian CEO Jeremey Thomas noted that cybercriminals are now actively scanning repositories looking for secrets that would enable them to compromise applications.

As the number of application development projects being launched increased, so too did the number of application secrets being stored in repositories like GitHub. The GitGuardian report notes 60 million repositories were created in the last year, representing a 35% increase over the previous year. GitGuardian claims it detected more than 5,000 application secrets per day. Most of those secrets have been detected in repositories that belong to developers (85%), while the other 15% belonged to organizations. The top four countries where secrets were disclosed were India, Brazil, the United States and Nigeria.

GitGuardian also notes it sent out 937,539 pro bono alerts to 558,086 developers last year that informed developers that application secrets were exposed. The mean time for GitGuardian’s algorithm to detect a leak is four seconds. The average mean time to response of a developer when informed of the issues is about 25 minutes, the report noted.

As a best practice, GitGuardian recommends not storing unencrypted secrets in git repositories, and that unencrypted secrets should never be shared via messaging systems like Slack. DevOps teams should also restrict API access and permissions.

As more attention is paid to how software supply chains are managed in the wake of some recent, high-profile breaches, there is no doubt the number of audits conducted will increase. Many of those auditors will specifically be trying to ascertain how application secrets are being managed. Developers may have to get used to a new, higher level of scrutiny, especially as DevSecOps practices become more widely adopted.

In the meantime, DevOps teams may want to review their dependency on public repositories. There are plenty of private repository options that provide most of the same source code sharing capabilities as a public repository. That may mean someone on the DevOps team is required to manage the private repository, but, given the fact that many regulatory bodies will soon be looking to make an example of organizations that don’t secure application secrets, chances are good those costs will be trivial compared to a fine that would be levied.

Programming language rankings get regular headlines, and they should, at least from trend trackers like us. Among my favorite is the RedMonk quarterly, published this week. I like the methodology of their system, which extracts data from GitHub and Stack Overflow and combines them for “a ranking that attempts to reflect both code (GitHub) and discussion (Stack Overflow) traction.”

In other words, it correlates what the cool kids are talking about with actual language usage “in an effort to extract insights into potential future adoption trends.” It’s a mix that makes it meaningful.

The latest ranking was posted by veteran industry analyst Stephen O’Grady on his RedMonk blog. “GitHub and Stack Overflow are used here, first, because of their size, and second, because of their public exposure of the data necessary for the analysis,” he wrote.

O’Grady’s post includes thoughtful observations about JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby, Go, R, Kotlin, Rust, and Dart.

There’s quite a lot of change afoot in the programming world, the analysts found, but constant has been the rise of Python, which has maintained its top ranking ahead of Java. “Java was extremely hot on Python’s heels – and was in fact closer to the number one ranking than to PHP behind it – but Python’s ability to defend its new high ranking is notable,” O’Grady wrote.

Half of the Top 20 languages experienced “a degree of movement,” O’Grady added, “which is very unusual. It’s difficult to attribute this definitively to any higher level macro trends, but the data is consistent with an industry that picked the pace back up in the last two quarters of the year after the initial chaos of lockdowns and so on gave way to livable if extremely suboptimal new routines.”

JavaScript is holding its own in the rankings. “[I]t is worth noting just how robust JavaScript’s performance remains,” O’Grady observed. “In spite of all of the competition from up and coming languages, all the discussion of fragmentation and even criticisms of JavaScript the language itself, it remains remarkably popular.

JavaScript pull requests are up 453% since Q1 of January of 2018, and they were up 96% from the last quarter “on an already massive base of commits.” ‘

‘Simply put, JavaScript remains – its detractors notwithstanding – a force of nature like no other within the industry,” he wrote, “and there are no indications in the data that this is likely to change any time soon.”

TypeScript, which is a superset of JavaScript, moved up for the sixth of its latest eight quarterly RedMonk rankings, “and its popularity is evident when one looks around the industry.” Ruby is on a gentle long-term downward trajectory, the analysts found. Go is slipping, too. R, a language for statistical computing and graphics, appears to be on a slow upswing. Both Kotlin and Rust showed signs of growing popularity. And Dart, an open source, purely object-oriented, optionally typed, and a class-based language, has risen since the advent of the Flutter framework.

Th RedMonk report surrounds a cool plotting of the language rankings with detailed analysis of key trends over the past quarter. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a must read.

Vanessa Gennarelli, senior director of education at GitHub, said the overall goal of the program is increase the pool of developer talent with experience working remotely on an open source project that requires a fair amount of collaboration with other developers.

The program was developed in collaboration with Major League Hacking (MLH), which organizes hackathons for students. Each intern participates in a series of short hackathon sprints involving multiple open source projects over the 12-week period. GitHub originally created the fellowship program as a way to address the demand for online internships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those internships have provided open source maintainers with access to a pool of talent that can reside anywhere versus, for example, always trying to recruit individuals located in a specific geographic area, Gennarelli said. GitHub is also trying to increase diversity within the open source community, Gennarelli added.

Three quarters of open source maintainers (76%) that have worked with MLH interns reported their open source project was in a better state after working with MLH Fellows. Of eligible fellows who were matched for jobs with an MLH Fellowship partner company, more than 20% ended up receiving full-time offers at that company.

Mike Swift, MLH CEO, said the internships provide a way to partially close a gap in developer expertise that only continues to widen. Organizations are especially keen to find developers that have open source expertise, Swift added.

A survey of 3,400 developers and technology managers conducted O’Reilly Media on behalf of IBM finds 65% of respondents preferred skills related to the underlying open source technologies. The same percentage agreed that contributions to open source projects impress potential employers and result in better professional opportunities. In many cases, open source projects are among some of the most innovative development initiatives in the IT industry, Swift noted.

Of course, as open source becomes a primary driver for building software, more contributors are looking to get paid for their efforts. Much of that compensation comes in the form of organizations that hire developers for the express purpose of contributing to open source projects that they deem critical to their operations.

Regardless of how developers are compensated for their time and effort, it is apparent open source projects are the fountainhead from which many opportunities spring. Future success in any endeavor has as much to do with who someone knows as it does actual talent. The best place for any developer to expand their base of industry contact is to collaborate on an open source project. The more projects they contribute to, the greater the reach of their personal network and, by extension, their net worth, will become.
