What is a Jenkins?

Friends as you already know that software development is a very huge and heavy process. There are so many innumerable moving parts of it. In order to improve the development process, we utilize the methodology of DevOps and its tools. In DevOps, there are so many phases. This is one of the most favorable phases as continuous integration which is willing to help you in coming all together with the parts of software development and manages all of them. Therefore, there is a very popular tool named ‘Jenkins’.

Jenkins is an open-source automation tool. Now, we will learn about continuous integration and using it in Jenkins. It is a phase of DevOps in which we are continuously doing integrate all of your software development processes in parts and take parts to combine all together. Well, we say combine but it actually controls through continuous integration.

What are the benefits of Jenkins?

Take a brief history of Jenkins. Jenkins was originally developed in 2004 by the sun microsystems company under the name Hudson. It had slowly gained popularity and had become one of the best developing tools out there. After this, the project was later named Jenkins when oracle bought microsystems and decided to keep Hudson & Jenkins as separate entities. It is now one of the most popular CI/CD tools in use out there. As we can see certain benefits are associated with:

Jenkins is a community tool – its open source and has a very large community that contributes to it regularly.

Its free so you don’t have to accrue anymore subscription costs

Easy for the developers to find and fix issues.

Improves code quality, minimize defects.

Why we should learn Jenkins?

After getting the benefits of Jenkins. Now, looking for the learning process. We are learning for using it. We use it for seeing widely use through DevOps team, build and release teams, and dev teams. Due to it provides feedback loop back to the developer and fix the errors. It developer has fresh in the memory for quick error. It can publish every build of your software and has already gone through automation testing. Further uses associates with this such as easy interface, easy to navigate, easy document and example, free and open-source, plugin and functionality, and users around the world.

How our Jenkins course/training would help?

Through the course tutorial, we get intact knowledge and practices that help you in working along with the Jenkins. It allows you to create build jobs on certain kinds of projects such as freestyle projects, pipelines, multi-configuration projects, multi-branch pipelines, folders, and GitHub organizations. After this we are getting benefitted from tutorials in two items, one is the Jenkins freestyle job it comes under many configures as general, source code management, build triggers, build environment, build, and post-build actions. Another is the pipeline, it comes with certain stages as CI/CD pipeline, Jenkins file, and Jenkins pipeline. I hope this will make you clearer to understand about the tool, their automation process, and software development process connections with different phases by using different plugins depending upon your needs.

Source:-whatech.com Instead of virtualizing the hardware stack as with the technique of the virtual machine, containers aim at virtualizing at […]

Source:-whatech.com

Instead of virtualizing the hardware stack as with the technique of the virtual machine, containers aim at virtualizing at the operating system level, with several containers operating at the same operating system kernel directly.

Market Overview

This implies that cloud containers are far more lightweight as they efficiently share the operating system kernel, start much faster, and utilize a fraction of the memory compared with booting an entire operating system.

Cloud container as a service (CaaS) provides a software developer with the potential to build predictable environments that are entirely isolated from other applications.

Containers can also contain different software dependencies required by the application, such as particular versions of programming language runtimes and other software and source code libraries. From the software developer’s perspective, all this is ensured to be consistent no matter where the software/application is finally deployed.

Cloud container as a service (CaaS) enables organizations to enhance business productivity. By acquiring such advanced services, IT operational team and software developers spend less time in detecting and debugging errors in environments, and more time in implementing new functionalities in the system.

These advanced services also allow developers to perform automated rollbacks and roll-outs during software development.

Cloud container as a service (CaaS) is developed with the objective to virtualize memory, CPU, network resources, and storage at the OS-level, empowering developers with an improved view of the operating system logically isolated from other applications. Cloud container as a service (CaaS) is highly valuable as it allows users to pay only for the CaaS resources that they have subscribed for.

Case-based solutions offer a broad range of efficient services, including load balancing scheduling capabilities and computing models. It is extremely simple to scale up a container using Cloud container as a service (CaaS).

CaaS services are highly responsive, stable, scalable, and secure.

The key players covered in this study
Apcera (California, US)
AWS (Washington, US)
Docker (California, US)
Google (California, US)
IBM (New York, US)
Kontena (Helsinki, Finland)
Cloud 66 (England, UK)
CoScale (Belgium)
Microsoft (Washington, US)

Market Segmentation

The global Cloud container as a service (CaaS) market can be analyzed on the basis of product type, crucial market applications, and regional markets. Based on the product types, Cloud container as a service (CaaS) market can be segmented into-

Public Cloud
Private Cloud
Hybrid Cloud
Major applications areas-

Retail and Consumer Goods
Healthcare and Life Sciences
Manufacturing
Media, Entertainment, and Gaming
IT and Telecommunications
Transportation and Logistics
Travel and Hospitality
Other
Within the broad spectrum of cloud computing services, CaaS falls somewhere between platform as a service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a service (IaaS). However, CaaS is generally considered as a subset of IaaS.

Cloud container as a service (CaaS) enables software developers to deploy a container environment rapidly, abolishing the requirement to design clusters/test container infrastructure.

Regional Analysis

North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Southeast Asia, and Central & South America are the major regions driving the growth of Cloud container as a service (CaaS) market. IT organizations operating in the Asia Pacific and North American countries are the most prominent adopters of advanced container as a service (CaaS).

Factors such as an increasing number of IT organizations and the presence of some leading cloud service providers and software developers are expected to increase the demand for efficient CaaS services. These two regions are expected to offer a considerable contribution to the growth of cloud container as a service (CaaS).

Cloud service providers are focusing on enhancing their offerings by improving the quality and efficiency of CaaS-based solutions.

Industry News

Docker is an advanced containerization software that performs OS-level-virtualization. The design and development of this software were done by Docker, Inc.

Docker was first released in the year 2013. The software is implemented in ‘Go’ programming language.

It’s an excellent and freemium software as a service and possesses Apache License 2.0 as the source code license.

Source:- devopsCisco Systems announced today that it is further embracing the open source Ansible automation framework on its storage area […]

Source:- devops
Cisco Systems announced today that it is further embracing the open source Ansible automation framework on its storage area network (SAN) platform as part of an effort to extend best DevOps practices to IT infrastructure. The latest version of the Cisco MDS 9700 platform modules automates tasks such as VSAN configuration, device-alias and zoning configuration.

Adarsh Viswanathan, product manager for data center storage at Cisco, said the company has embraced the Ansible framework because it’s an open framework that is now being adopted by enterprise IT organizations to manage infrastructure in a more adroit fashion. The rise of cloud-native applications being developed with DevOps processes not only result in more applications accessing a common pool of data, but also require changes to be made dynamically to the underlying storage platform.

Cisco is adding support for 64G-line cards when they become available along with support for non-volatile memory express (NVMe) and All-Flash arrays. Cisco has also extended its SAN Analytics software to add support for the NVMe/Fibre Channel protocol along with existing support for SCSI/Fibre channel.

Viswanathan said support for Ansible will make it simpler for IT organizations to embrace automation at scale. Cisco has previously embraced open application programming interfaces (APIs), OpenStack and Python-based scripts. Ansible takes those efforts to a higher level by make available a declarative framework that doesn’t necessarily require IT operations teams to develop programming expertise, said Viswanathan.

IT operations teams are coming under increased pressure to provide developers with an IT experience that rivals cloud service providers. Frameworks such as Ansible make it possible for IT operations teams to make IT resources available on-demand to developers using IT infrastructure residing in an on-premises environment.

Friction between developers and IT operations teams is rising as DevOps processes are employed more widely within enterprise IT environments. Many of those developers have alternatively turned to cloud service providers to build and deploy their applications. However, many organizations still need to deploy applications once they move into a production environment hosted in a local data center. In fact, more than 70% of enterprise applications still run in a local data center a decade after the initial rise of cloud computing. IT operations teams that manage those on-premises IT environments need to provide developers with access to resources they can easily scale up and down as required.

Cloud-native applications based on microservices will further challenge IT operations teams as the number of application services trying to share a limited set of IT infrastructure resources only increases. In the case of Cisco, those limited resources are rack-based servers attached to SANs such as the Cisco MDS 9700.

Of course, not every IT operations team is going to embrace DevOps processes overnight. Instead, many of them will be exposed to frameworks such as Ansible as they upgrade servers and storage over time. The one thing that is certain is developers will continue to apply pressure to make that transition sooner than later as more organizations continue to appreciate the extent to which they now depend on software to innovate

Source :- securityboulevard.com

This week, AWS ran its inaugural security conference AWS re:Inforce in Boston. There were several interesting talks at the conference, and I found John Maski’s presentation, “Integrating AppSec in your DevSecOps on AWS,” contained great practical advice. Maski worked for AT&T for 32 years, with his most current role being Director, Production Resiliency & DevSecOps Enablement. He recently joined Veracode to advise customers on how to best integrate Veracode into their security pipeline, and we’re lucky to have him on the team.

Support from Executive Leadership is Crucial

Starting out, and as expected for any large organization, Maski found a huge variety of skill levels and a lot of variation in how people ran their development pipelines outside of the central DevOps initiative. Software development was optimized for speed – aka “quantity” – and security was an afterthought.

On the upside, Maski saw pockets of advanced knowledge and CI/CD implementations. A significant CI/CD platform was already in the works. Most importantly, there was a huge appetite among executives for making quick and extensive progress.

“In an organization the size of AT&T, you can’t make meaningful progress without the support of executive leadership,” Maski said. “It is absolutely critical to drive the necessary cultural changes.”

With this backing, he set out to connect with partner organizations, working collectively towards the seemingly impossible goal to secure AT&T’s entire application landscape. Spoiler alert: When Maski recently left AT&T, they were very close to completing this goal.

Integrating Security into the CI/CD Pipeline

If you are coming from the security side of the house and are in charge of application security, it really pays off to truly understand your organization’s development tools and how pipelines are set up. Not only will you be able to speak your engineering team’s language, you will be better suited to advise them on how to integrate security testing solutions.

Most of application security can and should be automated, with the exception of what’s at the very beginning and the very end of the process. Threat modeling is still a manual process that relies on human understanding of the architecture, even if there are tools that help visualize and document this process. Likewise, penetration testing is a final litmus test at the end of the development process that should be carried out on any critical application before it is deployed into production.

Veracode-AWS-reinvent-CI-Cd-Pipeline-Slide.png
Veracode AWS reInvent CI CD Pipeline
In the middle are various automated testing solutions that should be run automatically to regularly provide feedback on security defects. Static analysis tests the application code for a broad range of security flaws, and it can be fully automated into both the IDE and the CI process. In the IDE, it provides early security guidance and education to software engineers while they are coding by highlighting potential vulnerabilities and suggesting best practices. Veracode has found that integrating SAST in this early stage in the process has helped organizations to reduce newly introduced flaws by 60 percent.

However, guidance at this stage is not mandatory and is mostly suitable to removing flaws in newly written code. To ensure a more structured feedback and compliance process, static analysis should be integrated into the SDLC. Typically, development teams would scan as part of their CI process, either on a code commit or a pull request, and get security defects flagged through the ticketing system. They will do this scan in a “sandbox,” so that results do not get escalated to the security team. Finally, for high security applications, we recommend doing a scan on the full scope of the application before each deployment to ensure that no security defects escape to production.

Software composition analysis looks at known vulnerabilities in open source libraries that are being used in the code. If you find such a vulnerability, the fix is usually upgrading to a different library version rather than fixing the open source code yourself. SCA often integrates with the SDLC in the same places as static analysis.

Dynamic analysis is a third way of looking for vulnerabilities in software and is typically applied to web applications. Unlike static analysis, which looks at the application code, dynamic analysis interacts with the application via an instrumented browser that crawls and audits the application. While findings with other testing solutions overlap, there are several security issues that only dynamic analysis can detect, including server configuration errors. Dynamic analysis is typically run in the QA stage against a staging server and against the production server.

Five Tips for Getting Traction with Your DevSecOps Initiative

With many lessons learned having during his DevSecOps initiative at AT&T, Maski shared his five recommendations to get traction with your own program:

Partner with stakeholders: Identify, collaborate, and align with your partners, especially in software development. You have to understand their world and respect their point of view for your program to be successful.
Pick the right metrics: Know your metrics before you jumpstart the program. Talk upfront with your sponsors and partners on what success means to them and agree on metrics.
Don’t boil the ocean: Go “Agile.” Pick pilot applications to secure, so that you can learn from the process and expand to the next group of applications. Keep note of what you learn along the way to improve the program over time.
Run an internal campaign: Communicate effectively to raise awareness about the importance of AppSec to the business. Tie AppSec to the mission of the company. Use your communication to educate DevOps team members about AppSec to help strengthen their expertise.
Demonstrate progress: To ensure continued executive support for your program, regularly report your program’s progress through the metrics you picked. Tailor your progress reports to the audience; for example, your senior leadership will want to see different metrics than your engineering partners.
Key Learnings from AT&T’s DevSecOps Program

Maski left the audience with three key learnings from running his program:

Strong Executive Leadership is key to driving the necessary cultural changes – and to secure the required budget.
If getting your program started quickly is a requirement, use services built on a robust platform. That way you can focus on onboarding applications rather than building and maintaining scanning infrastructure.
Build a strong team and have a flexible plan. Map out and communicate your plan with confidence. That doesn’t mean that your plan has to be perfect – learn and adjust as you go along. Set bold goals to drive progress.
Veracode was and is a cornerstone of AT&T’s AppSec strategy. If you’d like to learn how to build an AppSec program in your organization, download The Ultimate Guide to Getting Started With Application Security.

Source- searchsoftwarequality.techtarget.com

DevOps might be a relatively new paradigm, but some of its core components need a refresh to support even more modern development requirements.

With that in mind, CloudBees, a CI/CD platform provider, recently delivered version 1.0 of a Jenkins plug-in that cuts complexity when it comes to managing Jenkins configurations for system administrators and developers.

Jenkins Configuration as Code (JCasC) lets admins and developers define and manage their Jenkins configurations in human-readable, plain text YAML syntax, instead of verbose XML files, and store them as code in version control systems such as Git. So, with JCasC, a developer can validate, test and commit changes for a Jenkins configuration and reuse the same configuration file to configure multiple Jenkins instances.

Jenkins is the de facto CI/CD system for many enterprises that require a full-time administrator to manually configure Jenkins and its more than 1,400 plug-ins. Applying the method of configuration as code will help remove tedious processes and support more industrialized use, said Mike Wolf, managing director and modern delivery leader who specializes in DevOps and Agile at KPMG in Baltimore and who spoke at the recent DevOps World | Jenkins World 2018 conference in San Francisco.

At the same time, configuration as code will force sysadmins to further adopt the process and rigor of modern software development lifecycle methods.

“Over the past decade, the DevOps community has started taking all of these deployment and configuration steps and thinking of them as a part of the program, i.e., as code,” said Mik Kersten, CEO at Tasktop Technologies in Vancouver, B.C. “This means we can start applying programming concepts, such as immutability, to the entire delivery pipeline. And eventually, what’s old will be new again, when we start thinking of the entire delivery pipeline as a single architecture and body of code like we did in the days of Smalltalk where everything was code.”

Config as code: ‘Good enough’ for Jenkins users

Meanwhile, companies such as Atomist and Pulumi go beyond the use of YAML to help developers build configuration and infrastructure as code in real programming languages.

“There is a role for configuration, but whenever you are describing rich behaviors, code is a lot better,” said Rod Johnson, founder and CEO of Atomist in San Francisco. “Too often configuration like YAML becomes a bad imperative programming language.”

Kohsuke Kawaguchi, CloudBees CTO, acknowledged other configuration-as-code approaches that use true programming languages rather than YAML but said the JCasC plug-in is “good enough for ordinary users of Jenkins.” Config as code becomes more credible with user adoption, and as more users adopt the plug-in, they’ll push the envelope with it, he said.

Configuration as code has been a key addition in the DevOps toolkit over the past decade, to apply more rigorous software engineering practices to configuration problems across an enterprise infrastructure, from virtual machines and containers to databases and networks, said Joe Duffy, CEO of Pulumi in Seattle.Examples include version changes in source control and code reviews, as well as “integrating code-oriented services to enact automated CI/CD pipelines and build reusable abstractions and share packages with our teams and communities,” Duffy said.

The related infrastructure-as-code approach brings a similar philosophy to declarative provisioning and infrastructure management. Previously, infrastructure-as-code systems used markup languages and domain-specific languages, but Pulumi and Atomist enable infrastructure as real code using programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript and Python.

Code is more amenable to tools support than configuration, because of the power of integrated development environments (IDEs) and the sophistication of modern languages, Atomist’s Johnson said. Code in modern languages also is more modular and reusable. And if the code is written using a modern IDE, it is possible to unit test it, which would be difficult or impossible otherwise, he added.

Source- forbes.com Microsoft has recently announced the rebranding of Visual Studio Team Service (VSTS) to Azure DevOps. VSTS, an extension […]

Source- forbes.com

Microsoft has recently announced the rebranding of Visual Studio Team Service (VSTS) to Azure DevOps. VSTS, an extension of Visual Studio – the flagship integrated development environment from Microsoft – enabled architects, developers, and testers to collaboratively design, develop and test software.

Though it may seem like yet another rebranding exercise, Azure DevOps is much more than that. It is a strategic move from Microsoft with an aim to establish itself as a segment leader in the DevOps market.

VSTS is a decade-old product that was primarily created to attract enterprise development teams building complex Windows applications. It had all the ingredients from source code control to automated testing to deliver an integrated experience of application lifecycle management (ALM).

DevOps as a term was not coined when the product teams at Microsoft conceived the idea of VSTS. Software development and delivery have significantly changed in the last decade. The evolution of infrastructure as code, immutable infrastructure, continuous integration, continuous deployment, continuous testing and continuous monitoring have changed the face of ALM. The software release cadence has shifted from once in six months to tens of deployments in an hour. The software is shipped at a rapid pace than ever. Customers wanted tools to perform faster deployments that include manual and automated testing which eventually resulted in DevOps.

Azure DevOps enables Microsoft to align with the changing dynamics of the industry. Here are five reasons why Azure DevOps is a big deal for both Microsoft and the ecosystem –

1. Get the best out of Github acquisition

Source code control management (SCM) is the foundation of DevOps. With Github in its kitty, Microsoft wants to maximize its investment by connecting the dots across Github and Azure. Team Foundation Services, the original SCM available in VSTS, is slowly giving way to Github. Microsoft is doing everything to ensure that developers, operators and testers get the best possible experience in taking the source code of Github repositories all the way to the deployment target – Azure compute services delivered through virtual machines and containers.

Microsoft wants Azure DevOps to deliver best CI/CD experience for Github projects.

2. Going beyond Windows and Visual Studio

Visual Studio has been one of the cash cows for Microsoft. For two decades, it enjoyed the same fanfare as Windows and Office franchises. Microsoft has been successful in taking Office beyond Windows to Mac and the web. It consciously moved away from positioning Azure as the platform for .NET and Windows applications. By dropping the Windows moniker from Azure, it made a statement that its public cloud can run any OS and any platform.

But, Visual Studio is still predominantly associated with Windows application development. No PHP developer and a Golang developer would want to use Visual Studio and VSTS for managing their projects.

Through the rebranding of VSTS to a more generic brand, Microsoft is trying to make a statement that its toolchain is not just meant for .NET developers. The open source variant of Visual Studio branded as VS Code is already a huge hit among open source developers.

Azure DevOps may attract new age developers that typically don’t associate Visual Studio with modern application development.

3. Compete better with AWS

During the last three years, Amazon has built a parallel universe of development tools. AWS OpsWorks, AWS Cloud9 IDE, AWS CodeStar, AWS CodeCommit, AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodePipeline deliver end-to-end DevOps experience on AWS.

Microsoft lacked an integrated DevOps story for Azure. The masterstroke of acquiring Github has put the company in the forefront of DevOps. By tweaking and aligning existing VSTS assets, Microsoft finally has a compelling offering in the form of Azure DevOps.

It also got the ammunition to compete with some of the leading companies in the DevOps segment such as HashiCorp, CloudBees, Atlassian and Xebia Labs.

4. Make Azure the preferred cloud for open source projects

Microsoft has turned all the knobs to make Azure the best platform for open source development. With Azure DevOps, it’s taking it to the next level.

Developers get cloud-hosted pipelines for Linux, macOS, and Windows with unlimited minutes and 10 free parallel jobs for their open source projects. This is undoubtedly a big deal for implementing CI/CD projects. Even though the pipelines support other cloud platforms including AWS and GCP, they have better integration with Azure.

With Xamarin, Github, VS Code and Azure, Microsoft has some of the best toolchains to develop and deploy open source projects.

5. Drive consumption of Azure Compute

Compute and storage are the new currency of the platform vendors. All roads in the public cloud lead to compute. Every public cloud vendor aligns the services and offerings to drive additional consumption of compute, and Microsoft is not an exception.

Microsoft has four different compute services – virtual machines (IaaS), platform (PaaS), containers (CaaS) and functions (FaaS). Azure DevOps lands application deployment artifacts in one of these compute services directly increasing the consumption. Developers and operators using Azure DevOps will indirectly utilize Azure Storage and Compute service. Services such as Azure VMs, Azure App Service, Azure Container Registry, Azure Kubernetes Service and Azure Service Fabric will experience increased usage and consumption which will directly impact the revenue.

Red Hat’s Ansible Tower, like other DevOps tools, such as Chefand Puppet, makes it much easier to manage your IT infrastructure without the blood, sweat, and tears of manually setting up servers, containers, and clouds. With the latest edition, Ansible Tower 3.3, you can do all that with an improved user interface and scaling, and you can now run it on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat’s Kubernetes container application platform.

Ansible makes it easier to move your resources and applications from platform to platform as needed. In a world where your data and applications are running simultaneously on containers, virtual machines, private and public clouds, this is a must.

As Joe Fitzgerald, Red Hat VP, said in a statement, “As more organizations move toward modernizing their infrastructure, tools that can work seamlessly across environments become a critical part of that equation. Red Hat Ansible Tower can already run anywhere it’s needed across hybrid environments and now with the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform functionality available in Ansible Tower 3.3 we take that a step further by making the platform consumable in more ways for even easier automation across infrastructures.”

On OpenShift, Ansible Tower 3.3 is now available as a pod service and configurable directly from Red Hat Container Platform. This enables users to add more capacity to Ansible Tower simply by adding more pods. Simplifying what was previously a multi-step process, users can now scale Ansible Tower up and down at runtime as needed directly through Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform’s user interface, command line and application programming interface (API).

Ansible Tower other new features and improvements include:

More granular control: A redesigned user interface puts more information at user’s fingertips. Jobs and job templates now show more information at a glance, including inventory and credentials, enabling users to find information more quickly. Additionally, Ansible Tower 3.3 enables you to save any item on a job that’s configurable at launch. This includes inventory, credentials, and surveys. You can then use this saved configuration in a workflow or on a schedule.

Improved scaling: Red Hat Ansible Tower 3.3 builds on instance groups, which allow for reserving Tower cluster capacity for specific organizations, inventory, or jobs. New features in instance groups improve how to manage capacity in Tower without having to restart the cluster.

Custom Ansible environment support: Users can now create tailored Ansible environments. These can include custom modules, custom libraries, and even multiple Ansible versions. Application teams can stay on their trusted version of Ansible Engine while other teams can upgrade on their schedules.

Ansible’s developers says it’s “radically simple IT automation platform that makes your applications and systems easier to deploy. Avoid writing scripts or custom code to deploy and update your applications — automate in a language that approaches plain English, using SSH, with no agents to install on remote systems.” They’re right.

Jenkins is shifting gears on its platform to address a number of problems like service instability, brittle configuration, and more for Jenkins developers.

As an open source automation server, the Jenkins offers hundreds of plugins to support developers build, deploy and automate the projects. Released in 2011, the platform is currently having thousands of contributors and millions of users.

However, the Jenkins developers face several challenges in the development cycle of a software project. Enterprises nowadays are running bigger workloads, loading up more plugins, while expecting higher availability at the same time.

A lot of projects require developers to frequently restart them because of issues with resources and plugin upgrades. However, the restarts imply degraded service for the software delivery teams. In such cases, they need to wait longer for their builds to start or complete. Service stability has become a mission critical service for enterprises, and the enterprises can’t wait for that long.

The admins aren’t confident about making the changes to projects as it can cause issues for software delivery teams. Making a change that spans multiple plugins is difficult for contributors, as the users might not always upgrade numerous changes at once. When the contributors ship a code, they aren’t confident enough about running it automatically.

Kohsuke Kawaguchi, the creator of Jenkins, and CTO of CloudBees wrote in a blog post, that it’s time to tackle the problems, taking two new initiatives— Cloud-native Jenkins, and to insert a jolt in Jenkins.

The Cloud-native Jenkins is a general-purpose continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) engine that runs on Kubernetes. It embraces a fundamentally different architecture and extensibility mechanism.

On the other hand, the jolt in Jenkins continue the incremental trajectory of Jenkins 2. It will accelerate the development and offer better stability.

Cloud native Jenkins is now going to embrace the Kubernetes’s serverless approach, the functionalities deployed as separate microservices, as well as the services interacting through Kubernetes CRDs. It will enable infinite scalability, pay-as-you-go cost model, immutability, zero downtime operability etc.

Jenkins is also moving the data storage from file system to data services backed by cloud managed services. It will help users achieve high availability and horizontal scalability.

The Configuration as Code in the Cloud-native Jenkins will partly address the brittle configuration issues. New extensibility mechanism has also been introduced to solve service instability system.

Furthermore, the Cloud-native Jenkins will address the security vulnerabilities that are caused due to design.

Kohsuke mentioned that part of the aim of Cloud-native Jenkins is to grow and morph Jenkins into a shape that works well for Jenkins X.

“Cloud Native Jenkins will be the general-purpose CI/CD engine that runs on Kubernetes, which Jenkins X uses to create an opinionated CD experience for developing cloud native apps.”

Since, the Cloud-native Jenkins only targets a subset of Jenkins functionalities, Kohsuke said that the team behind Jenkins will inject a jolt in Jenkins. They will continue to serve the production workloads on Jenkins 2 while breaking some stuff for accelerated development and better scalability.
