Source:-https://devops.com/ GitLab today took the wraps off a major update to its continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform that embeds analytics […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

GitLab today took the wraps off a major update to its continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform that embeds analytics tools in workflows to identify the root cause of inefficiencies, among other additional capabilities.

David DeSanto, senior director for product management at GitLab, said that capability is part of an ongoing effort to include value stream analytics within the core GitLab 14 platform as an alternative to acquiring and deploying a separate platform. There are also additional charts and dashboards that enable DevOps teams to uncover bottlenecks over time.

In addition, GitLab announced it is extending the security capabilities of the platform by adding integrations with open source Semgrep and Trivy vulnerability scanning tools as part of an effort to enable organizations to embrace DevSecOps best practices within workflows. GitLab has also added support for the fuzz testing tool it gained via the acquisitions of Fuzzit and Peach Tech to enable DevOps teams to test application security more thoroughly along with making available additional dashboards to track security metrics.

As part of an effort to enable organizations to better secure their software supply chains, GitLab has also added support for immutable pipeline definitions that can’t be altered without specific levels of permissions being granted. That capability also enables DevOps teams to more easily achieve compliance with any number of regulatory frameworks, noted DeSanto.

The company is also adding a pipeline editor that provides access to a visual tool for creating, managing and visualizing pipelines. That tool is designed to both make DevOps more accessible to novices and provide experienced DevOps teams with an alternative tool for managing pipelines in a way that doesn’t require them to write additional code.

Finally, as part of its comprehensive approach to DevOps, GitLab is also making available agent software for Kubernetes clusters to eliminate the need for organizations to acquire a separate DevOps platform to build and deploy cloud-native applications based on microservices constructed using containers. The company now provides IT organizations with the option of crafting a GitOps workflow for Kubernetes using either an agentless or agent-based approach.

Gitlab is betting that, as DevOps continues to evolve and mature, more organizations will prefer to replace the various tools they need to integrate themselves with a platform that lowers the total cost of DevOps. Gartner is forecasting that, by 2023, 40% of organizations will have switched from multiple point solutions to a DevOps value stream delivery platform to streamline application delivery, versus less than 10% using such a platform in 2020. Today, only 10% of organizations are employing such a platform, according to Gartner.

There should also be many more organizations employing DevOps workflows to build applications. Organizations of all sizes now realize how dependent they are on software to drive a wide range of digital business transformation initiatives. The rate at which that software can now be securely developed and updated, in many cases, goes to the heart of their ability to compete. The issue is finding a way to achieve that goal without constructing a platform that ultimately takes time and resources away from building secure software.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/ SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bitrise, the mobile devops company that the world’s most well-known companies rely on to get mobile apps […]

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bitrise, the mobile devops company that the world’s most well-known companies rely on to get mobile apps and updates to market faster, today surpassed 100 companies migrating from Apple-owned Buddybuild to its own Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) platform. Among the roster of newly acquired customers are Wise (formerly TransferWise), Deliveroo and Atomic Robot. Other new customers include market leaders in the entertainment, food & beverage and media spaces, among others.

The wave of new customers comes as Apple declares end of life for Buddybuild, which it acquired in 2018. As of March 31, Apple officially discontinued support of its services to developers and by fall of 2021, the company will shut down operations altogether.

Bitrise, which already boasts more than 6,000 customers, 100,000 individual users, and supports more than 2 million mobile builds per month, was able to accommodate immediate migration to its platform by former Buddybuild users, without disruption to their current apps and release cycles.

Bitrise created a seamless onboarding process for the 100+ companies that have already migrated to its platform, as well as those that will migrate over the coming months. When a company adds an app to Bitrise, the platform automatically detects its mobile operating system, whether iOS or cross-platform with an iOS project, and creates default workflows specifically configured for that system. This allows teams to continuously iterate at the rate needed to run thousands of builds per month, and confidently submit updates to the app stores.

In contrast to Buddybuild, Bitrise supports frameworks and toolkits beyond iOS, including apps built for Android, Flutter, React Native, Cordova, and Ionic. Bitrise provides more than 300 steps and continuous integrations for iOS alone, providing not only a solution for the displaced developers, but also a new realm of possibilities. It also offers source control services like Github and Bitbucket.

“iOS is the second most commonly used mobile operating system in the world, so there was no doubt an appeal to working directly with a CI/CD platform owned by Apple,” said Barnabás Birmacher, CEO of Bitrise. But Apple’s decision to shut down Buddybuild will inevitably open up mobile development teams to a new world of opportunities they didn’t previously have access to with an iOS-only focused platform. As a first step in that journey, we’re eager to help teams migrate to our platform without disrupting their release cycles.”

Atomic Robot is one of the more than one hundred companies that migrated to Bitrise from Apple’s Buddybuild. The app they built for VITAS Healthcare, the leading hospice provider in the U.S., won the Mobile UX award in the Health category and a W3 Award in Health & Wellness.

“With Buddybuild no longer being available we needed to be able to quickly transition to a new CI/CD platform without disruption to our services or releases,” said Patrick Hammond, CTO & Co-founder at Atomic Robot. “Bitrise ticked all the boxes and set us up with the latest XCode support within 24 hours. It is the ultimate tool for all of our mobile needs. We all understand it, it’s easy to set up and follow, and we can all contribute, without having to worry about maintenance or breaks.”

The sudden mass migration from Buddybuild to Bitrise comes at a time when the rate of mobile adoption has accelerated the equivalent of three years in the last 12 months. Mobile technology requirements are also changing rapidly, and teams need to have the ability to iterate consistently. With Bitrise, teams can automate processes across the board, from running regular tests and viewing the results to automatic code-signing.

Bitrise

Bitrise is a mobile devops company, whose CI/CD platform is used by more than 6,000 businesses to get apps to market faster and keep up with constantly changing mobile requirements. Bitrise enables the world’s most sophisticated mobile organizations, including half of all mobile unicorn startups, to automate testing, accelerate build times, and quickly understand how new pieces of code will affect live apps. Customers such as Tinder, Peloton, DoorDash, Adidas, and Paysafe use Bitrise to rapidly respond to the changing mobile landscape. Bitrise is a Y Combinator company, headquartered in Budapest, with offices in London, San Francisco and Boston.

Source:-https://visualstudiomagazine.com/ Microsoft claims its new PyTorch Enterprise on Microsoft Azure is the first offering from a cloud platform to provide […]

Source:-https://visualstudiomagazine.com/

Microsoft claims its new PyTorch Enterprise on Microsoft Azure is the first offering from a cloud platform to provide enterprise support for PyTorch, the popular open source deep learning framework.

Along with that enterprise support, it comes with prioritized troubleshooting and also integrates with other Azure solutions, such as Azure Machine Learning.

PyTorch is an open source machine learning/deep learning framework based on the Torch library, used for applications such as computer vision and natural language processing, driven by Facebook’s AI Research lab, according to Wikipedia.

Regular Visual Studio Magazine readers will know that it’s also a favorite tool of our own data science guru, Dr. James McCaffrey of Microsoft Research, who authors regular hands-on PyTorch-based tutorials for our Data Science Lab.

The new offering comes after Microsoft teamed up with Facebook to become a founding member of the PyTorch Enterprise Support Program, which helps service providers develop and offer tailored enterprise-grade support to their customers

The enterprise support initiative was reportedly sparked by feedback from customers, who found it easy to get started with PyTorch but not so easy to implement complicated real-world enterprise production initiatives. Thus Microsoft will provide commercial support for the public PyTorch codebase. “Each release will be supported for as long as it is current,” Microsoft said in a recent blog post. “In addition, one PyTorch release will be selected for LTS every year. Such releases will be supported for two years, enabling a stable production experience without frequent major upgrade investment.”

Supported configurations include:

PyTorch: version 1.8.1 and up.
Libraries: torch, torchaudio, torchvision, torchtext, onnxruntime, and torch-tb-profiler.
Python: version 3.6 and up.
NVIDIA CUDA: versions 10.2 and 11.1.
Operating systems: Windows 10, Debian 9, Debian 10, Ubuntu 16.04.7 LTS, and Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS (x86_64 architecture only).
It does not, however, support C++ or Java interfaces, or PyTorch libraries and features marked “experimental and subject to change” including TorchServe and Pipeline Parallelism.

To be eligible at no additional cost, enterprise customers must join Microsoft’s Premier or Unified support programs. For such organizations, as part of the aforementioned prioritized troubleshooting, “The dedicated PyTorch team in Azure will prioritize, develop, and deliver hotfixes to customers as needed. These hotfixes will get tested and will be included in future PyTorch releases. In addition, Microsoft will extensively test PyTorch releases for performance regressions with continuous integration and realistic, demanding workloads from internal Microsoft applications.”

Microsoft is heavily invested in the PyTorch ecosystem, noting that the company’s data scientists like Dr. McCaffrey use PyTorch as the primary framework to develop models to enhance Office 365, Bing, Xbox and other offerings. That investment includes projects such as PyTorch Profiler, ONNX Runtime on PyTorch, PyTorch on Windows, DeepSpeed and more.

For now, PyTorch Enterprise is available on Azure Machine Learning and Data Science Virtual Machines (DSVM), coming soon to Azure Synapse Analytics.

Source:-https://www.prnewswire.com/ SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Palo Alto Networks (NYSE: PANW), the global cybersecurity leader, today announced […]

Source:-https://www.prnewswire.com/

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Palo Alto Networks (NYSE: PANW), the global cybersecurity leader, today announced the release of Yor, an open-source tool that automatically tags cloud resources within infrastructure as code (IaC) frameworks Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and Serverless Framework YAML. Yor automates the tedious work of manually tagging cloud resources, helps security teams trace security misconfigurations from code to cloud, and enables highly effective GitOps across all major cloud providers.

“Effective infrastructure tagging is critical to tracking cost allocation, access control, operations, and of course security in the cloud,” said Barak Schoster, chief architect at Palo Alto Networks. “To date, this has been an all-too-manual process for developers, with each cloud provider and organization having different standards and naming conventions. By automating standardized tagging, Yor provides visibility and traceability from IaC configuration to cloud resources in production.”

Organizations can run Yor across all infrastructure resources to retroactively assign ownership and other meaningful tags based on IaC and git history data. Yor can also be built into the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) lifecycle for improved traceability as infrastructure is modified and created. Having consistent tagging will make it simple to trace any misconfigurations back to the original code owners and editors, reducing the time to patch.

The Cloud Security Alliance noted in its recent report The State of Cloud Security Concerns, Challenges, and Incidents that misconfigurations were among the leading causes of breaches and outages as public cloud adoption doubled over the past two years. If a security team identifies a misconfiguration, having the tags for the developer owner simplifies triaging, so the ticket can be automatically assigned to the right developer. Yor’s use cases also extend beyond security by making it easier to tag resources to allocate costs from a finance and budgeting perspective.

“DevSecOps is about breaking down silos and improving productivity,” said Ismail Yenigul,open-source contributor and DevSecOps expert. “Imagine there is a SEV0 security incident — the last thing you want to do is spend hours identifying what caused a misconfiguration or track down the developer who wrote or modified the infrastructure code that is managed in Terraform, CloudFormation, or Serverless. Yor makes it possible to get answers to those questions immediately, for much more effective collaboration and faster mean time to resolution of incidents.”

Yor was built by Bridgecrew, the team behind the popular open-source IaC scanner Checkov which has been downloaded over 2 million times by developers. Bridgecrew was acquired by Palo Alto Networks in March 2021 and together they continue to invest in new and existing open source projects.

Yor is an open-source tool that automatically and consistently tags resources across infrastructure as code (IaC) frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Kubernetes, and Serverless Framework). Yor enables version-controlled owner assignment and resource tracing-based git history. It also extends tag enforcement logic by loading external tagging logic into your CI/CD pipeline.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/

ROCKFORD, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As the world enters the post-COVID era, the pace of digital transformation is accelerating faster than ever. Most companies are searching for a proven and secure B2B integration platform that ensures they can accommodate rapid, multi-channel revenue growth, and stay competitive in today’s “always on” business environment

To help, Cleo, the global leader in ecosystem integration solutions and provider of the Cleo Integration Cloud (CIC) platform, has aggressively tuned its CIC Engine to ensure supply chain customers have the omni-channel and eCommerce agility to do precisely that.

CIC Engine, the core of Cleo’s cloud-based ecosystem integration platform, serves as the technology foundation on which customers can dramatically scale their operations. Whether organizations are looking to continually accommodate ever increasing growth from eCommerce sales, omnichannel fulfillment, API-based integrations, or EDI transactions, CIC Engine is designed to provide the communications, connectivity and transformation foundation for customers to seamlessly scale their business. By providing intelligent orchestration and runtime automation of critical end-to-end integration processes (such as Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, or Load Tender-to-Invoice), CIC Engine boosts integrations across a company’s entire ecosystem, spanning trading partners, cloud or on-premise applications, legacy business systems, and more.

“Global eCommerce and omnichannel fulfillment are accelerating exponentially, but making it actually work for your business is a real integration technology challenge,” says Mahesh Rajasekharan, president and CEO of Cleo. “Meeting your customers’ increasingly high expectations requires a scalable and seamless integration engine to connect and transact with your entire ecosystem – something traditional technology providers struggle to provide. If your integration technology crashes, lacks scale, or doesn’t support API, EDI, and non-EDI transactions, this market explosion and growth opportunity will pass you by.”

One Cleo customer who’s definitely making it work is CTSI-Global, a leading provider of business intelligence, transportation management system (TMS), and supply chain consulting services. Chief Technology Officer, Trey Willis said, “We are perpetually focused on the enhancement and maturation of our ecosystem platform, to make it as responsive as possible to our clients’ ever-changing needs. To that end, Cleo Integration Cloud and the underlying CIC Engine has allowed us to process more than five million inbound and outbound business transactions per day. The robustness of the platform is helping us digitally scale our environment and customer experience.”

Delivering an “always-on” business calls for robust, reliable runtime integration. Cleo’s CIC Engine is purpose-built to support connectivity and transformation at scale, thanks to two unique components:

Protocol Engine – Enables dynamic end-to-end B2B and application dataflows for seamless business interactions. Businesses can leverage a rich library of B2B communications and application standards for seamless trading partner and system connectivity, including:
AS2, SFTP, FTP/S, SOAP, REST, email, partner mailbox, and portals
Integration Engine – Orchestrate any-to-any data transformations, enabling both batch and real-time multichannel business processes on a single platform. Support the industry’s most common data syntaxes, including:
EDI: ANSI X12, EDIFACT, and Tradacoms
Non-EDI: JSON, XML / cXML, Flat File, Spreadsheet, and Database
Companies like CTSI-Global and others who’ve adopted Cleo Integration Cloud and CIC Engine are gaining multiple business benefits:

Deliver Business Continuity
Meet elevated customer demands and support business 24/7 with enterprise-grade service level commitment of 99.95% uptime
Meet Trading Partner Demands
Rapidly roll out requirements from new or existing trading partners to support continuous delivery to your business teams
Eliminate Integration Complexity
Take advantage of a single integration engine that is specifically designed to support API, EDI, or non-EDI based B2B transactions
Scale Faster Than Ever
Hyper-scalable integration that helps drive multichannel growth, expand operational capacity, and capture increasing demands stemming from eCommerce or other digital revenue streams

Cleo Integration Cloud

Cleo Integration Cloud (CIC) is a cloud-based integration platform, purpose-built to design, build, operate and optimize critical ecosystem integration processes. The CIC platform brings end-to-end integration visibility across API, EDI and non-EDI integrations that gives technical and business users the confidence to rapidly onboard trading partners, enable integration between applications, and accelerate revenue-generating business processes. On the platform, businesses have the choice of self-service, managed services, or a blended approach – ensuring complete flexibility and control over their B2B integration strategy.

Source:-https://www.techrepublic.com/

After a year of full-time remote work, software engineers and team leaders are perfecting daily work routines developed in this solitary setting and simultaneously looking ahead to what the future will bring. Managers say that building new communication habits was key to making the shift to remote work. Development teams had to make adjustments to daily work flows as well, all while working longer hours and dealing with an increased risk of burnout as a result.

Jacqui Vreeland, recruiting manager at Emergent Software, noticed that the pandemic forced many developers to think about the long-term stability of their job.

“Too many people were working in a way that was, frankly, unsustainable before and when the world switched to being fully remote, many people have had to reevaluate what they truly love about their job in the first place when so many in-person benefits have been stripped away,” she said.

Meanwhile, for recruiters and hiring managers, filling open positions is as challenging as ever, even when the candidate pool now reaches worldwide.

Here’s a look at how the job landscape, daily routines and communication skills have changed over the last 12 months as well as what the future may look like.

How the pandemic has changed the job market
David Moise, president of Decide Consulting, is a software developer who now runs an IT staffing and recruiting firm. He said he noticed that managers, directors and vice presidents in IT were let go at a higher rate than other roles while hands-on engineers were not. He said some companies expected the developer to suddenly do their job plus the former manager’s job while other companies realized that the extra load had to be dispersed among everyone.

Moise said that letting go of managers meant that making decisions about digital transformation strategies was that much harder. Many companies threw out the old technology roadmap to adapt to the demands of the pandemic, but in some cases there were no managers to make decisions about software and tech stacks, he said.

Moise said that hiring is harder now in part because required skill sets are longer and more specific.

“Just a couple of years ago if you are looking for a developer, you had 20 options on skills and you needed to match 10,” he said. “Now you have 75 and you need to match 25.”

Mary Lee Olson, head of talent at Rollbar, said that companies should expand their hiring scope to the entire world.

“Expanding your geographical reach to find talent presents its own, new challenges but it’s a pivot companies must make,” she said.

Rollbar helps fix critical errors by using real-time alerts and AI-assisted workflows.

Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker, CEO of software consultancy company Six Feet Up, said hiring has become somewhat easier thanks to a truly global job market. She has employees in 15 time zones. One disadvantage is that such a large pool puts stress on compensation packages as smaller developer teams compete in a global marketplace, creating discrepancies based on company size, reputation and location.

“Over time, I expect compensation differences to level out, but for now, it’s common to see candidates asking for up to 3 times what you are expecting to pay for a technical position,” she said.

Adjusting the daily routine
For some development teams, the overnight shift to 100% remote work was a catalyst for improvements. Jay Leaf-Clark, head of IT at Dashlane, said the shift to remote work forced his company to change support and maintenance models within IT.

“We’ve rapidly adapted to an already incoming, and frankly, welcomed new way of managing IT that has up until now, been slowed in most organizations due to the battle between IT leaders and leadership on allocating the budget and time to make these dreams a reality,” he said.

Leaf-Clark said that this transformation will have long-term benefits as this new display of agility proves that his department can handle whatever the future has in store.

Alberto Giorgi, director of engineering at Tray.io, a low-code workflow automation company, said that remote work inspired his team to take a new look at internal processes from prioritizing asynchronous and written communication, ensuring a strong meeting etiquette to finding new ways to collaborate more effectively and increase the team’s overall productivity.

Giorgi said that demand for proper IT support for DevOps practitioners in particular increased significantly in the early days of the pandemic as companies faced a growing backlog in their deployment and development processes.

Another challenge was that the spike in Zoom meetings meant that developers lost time that would have been dedicated to writing code, which reduced overall efficiency, he said.

“To combat these challenges, many development teams took to the dual strategy of using API integrations and workflow automation to increase productivity,” he said.

The key to this approach is making sure that tools for important use cases such as source code control, continuous integration and delivery, and issue tracking can seamlessly pass data to each other.

“To streamline processes, smart devops teams looked to API integrations to connect their tech stack to avoid having to copy and re-copy issue logs and other data across multiple platforms,” he said.

Giorgi said automation has allowed his team to focus more resources on strategic projects while streamlining away time-consuming manual work.

Building new communication habits
Many workers miss the spontaneous chats in the breakroom or taking lunch with colleagues. For developers, not being able to walk over to a colleague’s cube to ask a question was a more serious problem. Alex Yelenevych, co-founder and chief marketing and product officer at CodeGym, an online platform for learning Java, said that developers had to adjust to the lack of in-person communication.

“Sometimes teammates didn’t understand some tasks in writing without further explanation, even a video call didn’t help,” he said. “We just started to formulate our tasks more precisely.”

Hendryx-Parker of Six Feet Up said that the pandemic has made internal communication critical.

“Having to deal with isolation made it all the more obvious that soft skills are actually essential in development to keep high performing teams going,” she said.

Yelenevych said that as people started to work longer hours, professional burnout began to manifest itself much earlier and deeper.

Hendryx-Parker said that by the fall, she saw developer burnout due to lopsided work/life balance.

“Working at home was especially challenging for developers with children, as they were putting longer hours while at the same time acting as educators and caretakers,” she said.

Yelenevych sees a hybrid schedule with some days at home and some days at the office as the optimal approach.

Source:-https://www.theedgemarkets.com/ The global lockdown has made cloud technology imperative for business continuity. Of all the disruptive technologies, cloud has the […]

Source:-https://www.theedgemarkets.com/

The global lockdown has made cloud technology imperative for business continuity. Of all the disruptive technologies, cloud has the biggest impact because of its adaptability, accessibility, scalability, resilience and cost.

Recognising this, the government plans to lead the growth of the cloud industry by adopting a cloud-first strategy in the public sector and appointing cloud service providers (CSPs) and managed service providers (MSPs) to build Malaysia’s capabilities in the segment.

While plans for cloud implementation have been in the works for several years, greater adoption of the technology is the focus of the Malaysia Digital Economy blueprint. The objective is to bring about a pivotal transition to achieve the country’s goal of becoming a regional leader in the digital economy.

This national objective offers a chance for a significant portion of local businesses, still relying on legacy technologies, to start investing in disruptive technologies, say experts.

There was a marked increase in the adoption of cloud services during the pandemic, spotlighting the critical need to strategically prepare for cloud adoption.

“With continued lockdowns and restricted movements around the world, many businesses have integrated cloud-based solutions to foster remote working environments, continue reaching their customers online and protect their data,” says Alvin Gan, head of technology consulting at KPMG Malaysia.

Under the blueprint in the MyDIGITAL initiative, four CSPs — Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Telekom Malaysia — have been given conditional approval to build and manage hyperscale data centres and cloud services in Malaysia.

Additionally, the government has proposed the appointment of three local information and communications technology (ICT) companies as MSPs. The MSPs will work with the CSPs to manage cloud services for the public sector. The three MSPs are Enfrasys Solution Sdn Bhd, Prestariang Systems Sdn Bhd and Cloud Connect Sdn Bhd.

With the digital infrastructure in place, the government hopes to move 80% of its services to the cloud by 2022 and in turn incentivise the private sector, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to transition to the cloud.

As SMEs are the backbone of the local economy — comprising 98.5% of all business establishments in Malaysia — they should start investing in disruptive technologies such as big data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing to avoid being left behind, says Geoff Soon, managing director, South Asia at Snowflake.

Although Malaysian SMEs are receptive to using digital technologies to enhance their business in general, they are still not availing themselves of digitalisation enablers such as cloud computing, IoT and data analytics, according to a white paper by SME Corp Malaysia and Huawei Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd.

The white paper, “Accelerating Malaysian Digital SMEs: Escaping the Computerisation Trap”, notes that while 44% of SMEs are using cloud computing, most of them have not adopted cloud software as a service (SaaS) to drive software process improvements. Instead, they are only using cloud storage services such as Dropbox to store personal documents, pictures and videos.

With the MyDIGITAL road map, SMEs will inevitably benefit from the many changes taking place with regard to cloud adoption, says Gan.

“The Covid-19 pandemic, in its own unique way, accelerated this change. From our observation, those that tend to be left behind are the ones that do not see the urgency to change and adapt.

“Many SMEs were toying with the idea of transforming digitally before the onset of the pandemic, but they decided not to pull the trigger. However, those that did (transform) were in an arguably better position to mitigate the challenges wrought by Covid-19,” he says.

Gan reasons that SMEs generally benefit from not having to deal with legacy issues, unlike established organisations, when embarking on digital transformation.

“In my work, it is often legacy systems that may not be fully equipped to be cloud-enabled. Even if it could be done, the cost is likely to balloon,” he adds.

But this transition need not require large investments, says K Raman, managing director of Microsoft Malaysia.

“Foundationally, there are cloud-based solutions available, such as Microsoft Azure with a pay-per-use model, as well as SaaS solutions like Microsoft 365 with a subscription model. These solutions require lower investment costs but deliver high impact.”

Cloud computing is a big shift from the traditional way businesses think about IT resources, he points out.

“The first immediate benefit in having a holistic journey to the cloud is cost effectiveness. Cloud computing eliminates the capital expense of buying hardware and software. In addition to the cost savings, implementing a holistic cloud journey helps to eliminate data silos.

“It brings together enterprise-wide data to create a comprehensive single source of truth across the business. For organisations today, data is the new currency. It is the key building block towards becoming a data-driven organisation.”

Cloud adoption has also increased as concerns about data security have significantly subsided, as both the underlying technology and market understanding have matured over the years, says Soon.

In fact, many organisations are realising that public clouds can provide a higher level of security than on-premise infrastructure when organisations adopt best practices, he notes.

“In addition, major data storage challenges are taken care of by cloud providers. Cloud technology helps with business productivity, enables remote working and helps organisations save costs with a flexible consumption model without having to rely solely on physical data centres, physical infrastructure or storage models. It eliminates the need for businesses to purchase, develop and operate infrastructure and applications, which typically require significant upfront investments.

“By adopting and leveraging cloud services and capabilities, organisations acquire added flexibility and convenience. Cloud services are available on-demand, allowing organisations to connect and process data from multiple discrete sources seamlessly.

“Cloud services also allow organisations to scale up or down rapidly, with an elasticity that means that they can immediately provide or release data according to what is required. All these benefits contribute to Malaysia’s goal of building a digital and competitive economy,” says Soon.

If all goes as planned, the local data centre industry is expected to contribute RM3.6 billion to the country’s revenue by 2026, states the Malaysia Digital Economy blueprint.

“We believe that going to the cloud is key to unlocking further digital transformation, and it is a gradual process. I also want to highlight that SMEs do not necessarily have to make large investments to facilitate cloud-based digital transformation,” says Raman.

According to the Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey 2020, 47% of the respondents noted that the pandemic had permanently accelerated digital transformation and the adoption of emergent technologies, with cloud technology ranked third.

“In short, many businesses are gravitating towards cloud technology because it allows for quick deployment. Many models available today, for example, SaaS, platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS), provide a plethora of options for organisations to get things running quickly and reduce cost in operations,” says Gan.

Nevertheless, although the blueprint is an indication that the government is serious about having cloud technology as one of the fundamentals driving the country’s transformation agenda, it is important to ensure that there is demand, he points out.

“The last thing we need is more investments in infrastructure and cloud technology without knowing if they will be fully utilised. One of the ways to manage this is to ensure the synchronisation of all public sector agencies across all levels as part of the cloud agenda,” adds Gan.

Soon concurs that to achieve the ambitious goal, local organisations will have to join forces to adapt to the next normal. “This means more widespread adoption and implementation of cloud services across the country, from end-to-end governmental services to an increasing adoption of e-commerce by the private sector.

“It is imperative that the government considers tactical strategies to ensure the success of the MyDIGITAL initiative. An important first step is to understand the benefits of modern data analytics and cloud deployment. From that point, the government can move away from legacy technology, revisit security policies and review best practices for cloud deployment,” he says.

Source:-https://itbrief.com.au The move to continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) and agile development methodologies means that application development now requires network IT […]

Source:-https://itbrief.com.au

The move to continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) and agile development methodologies means that application development now requires network IT operation teams (NetOps) and security operation teams (SecOps) to work together, which puts increased stress on developers and engineers.

Add heterogeneous computing environments to the mix, and it’s no wonder that the role of application delivery and security within DevOps has never been more onerous. Selecting an application delivery solution that maximises automation and integrates into an existing DevOps environment is critical.

Here are four reasons why application delivery is critical to supporting DevOps.

Production-ready automation
CI/CD and agile development methodologies require IT experts from different domains, (i.e., application, storage, network security, application delivery) to deploy new application services and their associated policies. Traditionally, they’ve had to invest in long, tedious provisioning and programming tasks that are often repetitive and require specific domain expertise to execute.

In a DevOps-driven world, this is no longer possible. IT requires workflow automation so that even non-technical experts can develop and craft application delivery and security workflows. According to Radware research, over half (53%) of organisations don’t integrate application protection into CI/CD processes.

This is why IT operations require an evolution, transitioning from simple scripts to standard-based, production-ready modules. The goal? To enable anybody from different teams to deploy and manage services regardless of the domain expertise he or she possesses.

Automated ADC and security
The marketplace for application delivery and security solutions is as diverse as its capabilities. Selecting one that integrates with an application provisioning and deployment solution, such as Ansible, is critical to enabling end-to-end automation.

Traditionally, deploying a new application delivery service has meant writing and managing a monolithic, gargantuan script to automate the workflow. Each application deployment requires a different workflow, and thus, a different script. DevOps requires these monolithic codes to be broken into discrete operations to speed time to development and deployment.

Underlying application delivery and security services that support these applications are no exception to this rule. An enterprise-grade ADC should provide pre-defined/production-ready modules and integration with DevOps orchestration tools to allow non-technical users to spin up and deploy application and security services.

Traditionally, if an error occurs, a review and QA of the code would be required. In a module-based world, errors become more transparent and segmented. For example, if only the application security policy is incorrect, the problem can be identified, fixed and only the security policy rerun, versus the entire script-based workflow.

Reuse and repurpose
Production-ready modules provide the ability to reuse and repurpose. If a particular module, such as the application security module, requires an update, SecOps can make that update, create a subversion if necessary and apply it to other application workflows. Changes are isolated to the specific module and don’t impact other aspects of the workflow.

Finally, an application owner, versus an ADC expert, can make these changes to the application security module or other modules. For example, while application servers and security policies can reside with the application owner, VLAN operations might be a network administrator’s responsibility. Now, a single person can manage these usually disparate responsibilities, thereby saving time to market.

This modularised approach also means switching from staging to production and back seamlessly. Changes to workflow parameters made within a staging environment can be pushed to production following staging. These capabilities support CI/CD processes by minimising human errors and reducing downtime.

Enterprise-grade ADC capabilities
Finally, any application delivery solution must combine ease of use with advanced application delivery capabilities, such as optimising Layer 7 load balancing deploying and managing application security policies. This further enhances the capabilities of any DevOps orchestration tool.

Source:-https://devops.com/ ARMO this week emerged from stealth to launch a platform to secure cloud-native workloads and improve visibility. The ARMO […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

ARMO this week emerged from stealth to launch a platform to secure cloud-native workloads and improve visibility. The ARMO Workload Fabric technology attaches code within the memory invoked by a microservice to enable cybersecurity policies to be applied via a cloud service.

Company CEO Shauli Rozen said the ARMO Workload Fabric is designed to enable IT organizations to implement a zero-trust architecture more easily within the context of a DevSecOps workflow.

Fresh from raising $4.5 million in seed funding, Rozen said ARMO’s approach eliminates the need to deploy and manage agent software, container sidecars or runtime application self-protection (RASP) software to enforce security policies across what inevitably will become thousands of microservices distributed across an enterprise IT environment.

That leaner approach then allows for a centralized management platform that can be deployed on a cloud or on-premises IT environment to apply policies that restrict which microservices can communicate with one another, Rozen said. The approach would ensure that only microservices developed using a continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform are allowed to communicate with other microservices, Rozen said.
That approach allows policies to be applied to microservices regardless of how they are constructed, Rozen said. That capability is critical, because developers are building microservices using everything from Python and Java to containers, he said. Many of those microservices are also frequently replaced, Rozen said, which can make updating any associated agent software a significant DevOps challenge. Given all the existing dependencies between microservices, overall application environment security is only as strong as the proverbial weakest link. The ARMO Workload Fabric enables developers to add a small amount of code to implement security policies each time a microservice is rolled out into a production environment.

As part of an effort to make it simpler for IT organizations to apply those policies, ARMO provides a pre-built set of policies that organizations can immediately apply, in addition to creating their own polices over time, Rozen said. In many cases, IT teams simply don’t have the time or expertise required to build those policies, Rozen added.

Microservices are being built and deployed at such a breakneck pace that it’s nearly impossible for cybersecurity teams to keep up. The ARMO Workload Fabric provides cybersecurity teams a means to centrally manage security policies that would otherwise be implemented as code by developers. It provides a level of observability for how those cybersecurity policies are being implemented across microservices that typically have a lot of dependencies on one another, Rozen said.

Most organizations today recognize there is a clear need to shift responsibility for application security further left toward developers. The challenge is finding a practical way to achieve that goal, and in a way that doesn’t adversely impact the rate at which applications are being developed. The key to achieving that goal is finding a way to apply microservice security polices that causes the least amount of friction possible to existing DevOps workflows.

Source:-https://containerjournal.com/ The development team behind KubeSphere announced it is available as an AWS QuickStart. KubeSphere is an open source platform […]

Source:-https://containerjournal.com/

The development team behind KubeSphere announced it is available as an AWS QuickStart. KubeSphere is an open source platform for managing Kubernetes environments, and the collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Quick Start will simplify integration with third-party offerings through the Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).

Ray Zhou, head of the KubeSphere project, says the goal is to make it possible to deploy KubeSphere in a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) environment running on the AWS cloud. KubeSphere was originally developed by QingCloud, a cloud service provider based in China.

KubeSphere uses a set of wizards, based on the open source KubeKey installer and accessed via a web user interface, that enable IT teams to deploy Kubernetes alongside other components needed to stand up a complete environment. This approach simplifies Kubernetes lifecycle management by using a plug-and-play platform architecture to add support for additional components as IT teams see fit, Zhou says.

In effect, KubeSphere is a distributed operating system for Kubernetes environments that includes an instance of open source Jenkins continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) software, an application store for deploying applications using Helm Charts and observability tools along with an instance of Porter load balancing software. It also supports GlusterFS, CephRBD, NFS, LocalPV storage, as well as other plugins compatible with the Container Storage Interface (CSI).

Zhou says the core KubeSphere plug-and-play architecture will soon be extended to simplify adding additional backend services and cloud platforms.

Kubesphere is trying to challenge rival Kubernetes management platforms like Rancher Labs, (recently acquired by SUSE) in addition to proprietary Kubernetes lifecycle management approaches. KubeSphere’s wizards make it possible for IT teams to manage fleets of Kubernetes clusters along with service meshes, observability tools and application life cycle management (ALM) tools via the application store.

A recent survey published by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) notes that complexity and cultural change are the top two challenges organizations face when migrating to Kubernetes environments. Cloud service providers have been at the forefront of deploying Kubernetes at scale, and KubeSphere is essentially a dividend of that effort.

One day, perhaps, KubeSphere could be donated to a consortium and controlled through an independent governing body. Regardless of who owns the platform, however, KubeSphere provides a model for what’s truly required to manage a Kubernetes environment at scale.

The next challenge IT organizations will face is aligning their often isolated internal cultures to rapidly converging and evolving management platforms.
