What is a Jenkins?

Friends as you already know that software development is a very huge and heavy process. There are so many innumerable moving parts of it. In order to improve the development process, we utilize the methodology of DevOps and its tools. In DevOps, there are so many phases. This is one of the most favorable phases as continuous integration which is willing to help you in coming all together with the parts of software development and manages all of them. Therefore, there is a very popular tool named ‘Jenkins’.

Jenkins is an open-source automation tool. Now, we will learn about continuous integration and using it in Jenkins. It is a phase of DevOps in which we are continuously doing integrate all of your software development processes in parts and take parts to combine all together. Well, we say combine but it actually controls through continuous integration.

What are the benefits of Jenkins?

Take a brief history of Jenkins. Jenkins was originally developed in 2004 by the sun microsystems company under the name Hudson. It had slowly gained popularity and had become one of the best developing tools out there. After this, the project was later named Jenkins when oracle bought microsystems and decided to keep Hudson & Jenkins as separate entities. It is now one of the most popular CI/CD tools in use out there. As we can see certain benefits are associated with:

Jenkins is a community tool – its open source and has a very large community that contributes to it regularly.

Its free so you don’t have to accrue anymore subscription costs

Easy for the developers to find and fix issues.

Improves code quality, minimize defects.

Why we should learn Jenkins?

After getting the benefits of Jenkins. Now, looking for the learning process. We are learning for using it. We use it for seeing widely use through DevOps team, build and release teams, and dev teams. Due to it provides feedback loop back to the developer and fix the errors. It developer has fresh in the memory for quick error. It can publish every build of your software and has already gone through automation testing. Further uses associates with this such as easy interface, easy to navigate, easy document and example, free and open-source, plugin and functionality, and users around the world.

How our Jenkins course/training would help?

Through the course tutorial, we get intact knowledge and practices that help you in working along with the Jenkins. It allows you to create build jobs on certain kinds of projects such as freestyle projects, pipelines, multi-configuration projects, multi-branch pipelines, folders, and GitHub organizations. After this we are getting benefitted from tutorials in two items, one is the Jenkins freestyle job it comes under many configures as general, source code management, build triggers, build environment, build, and post-build actions. Another is the pipeline, it comes with certain stages as CI/CD pipeline, Jenkins file, and Jenkins pipeline. I hope this will make you clearer to understand about the tool, their automation process, and software development process connections with different phases by using different plugins depending upon your needs.

What is DevOps?

To knowing DevOps. First, you have to understand DevOps. But today we are not going to put some definitions. Now we are willing to understand the whole concept of DevOps professionals. We are going to discuss every aspect of DevOps professionals. We have to understand the old days of software delivery. How you were consuming the software in old days. Actually, you were using multiple software in the back years like the 19th century includes 95, 97, and 98. Now, we are seeing many sorts of applications concerning delivering performance in new days. We have seen so many times of using applications by users through downloading and installation process.

Now, come to the point, we are talking about DevOps. The meaning of DevOps is development and operations collaboration which is done by software teams. By development of software. How it can redefine the whole automation of the software industry? It enhances your mindset for software development. There are many assumptions along with software operations. By the development of software. We take the following steps like manipulating software through engineers from one phase to another and by checking the functions of applications that are out to date and up to date.

What are the benefits of DevOps professionals?

After looking at the term ‘DevOps’. DevOps is a very popular trend in the software industry. Now, we are going to talk about the privileges or benefits of DevOps professionals. There are many sorts of benefits along with the DevOps software industry. Some of the main benefits associated as:

Release velocity: It helps in increasing the release velocity. We can release code for more production and with confidence.

Development cycle: Through it, the complete development cycle from initial design to production deployment becomes shorter.

Deployment rollback: In this field, we plan for any failure in deployment rollback due to an error in code or issue in production. This gives confidence in feature release without worry about the rollback in spare time.

Defect detection: With DevOps associate, we can catch defects much faster than releasing them to production. It simplifies the software quality.

Recovery from failure: In case of collapse, we can recover very fast with this process.

Collaboration: Through it, a collaboration between development and operations professionals increase.

Performance-oriented: Through it, entity follows performance-oriented culture in which teams become more productive and more innovative.

Why we should learn DevOps?

After learning the benefits of it. We are going to discuss the reasons why we learn DevOps? There are certainly reasons to learn about DevOps. It covers continuous software delivery, less complexity to manage, and faster resolution to problems in technical areas. In cultural areas, it handles the teams are more productive and happier, the employees are more engaging, and greater professional development opportunities. In business areas, it manages faster delivery time, improved communication and collaboration and more time to innovate, and greater customer experiences.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/

SAN MATEO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Armory, the open source continuous delivery software company, announced significant growth of its easy-to-use Spinnaker deployments, as the overall user community grew, evidenced in part by the 100% increase in attendees at the upcoming Spinnaker Summit. Spinnaker is the open source, multi-cloud continuous delivery (CD) platform for releasing software changes with high velocity and confidence.

Armory will participate at Spinnaker Summit June 22-24 with a number of sessions discussing the value of making Spinnaker more accessible and easier to use. Armory will take part in a keynote panel session moderated by Kelsey Hightower called A Deep Dive into the Benefits of CD. The Birds of a Feather session titled Continuous Delivery: Spinnaker at Scale includes speakers from Armory, Autodesk, AWS, Cox Automotive, Netflix, and Salesforce.

“Everything we do revolves around making Spinnaker more accessible and easier to use so that engineering teams are able to ship better code faster,” said Daniel R. Odio, co-founder and CEO, Armory. “And that’s achieved by working closely with partners like AWS and customers like Autodesk, who are leading the way by empowering developers and delivering code as efficiently as possible.”

Armory Frees Engineers to Focus on Delivering Value

One way Armory is making Spinnaker more accessible is through its Managed Services Offering, providing expert engineers to manage Spinnaker installations with 24/7 support and guaranteed 99.95% uptime—including break-fix, debugging and troubleshooting. Not only does this offering remove the management overhead of Spinnaker, customers typically see at least a three-times cost savings over hiring an internal team to install, configure, manage and provide 24/7 support of Spinnaker.

“Armory Managed Services eases our life with their expertise—from installation to service management—allowing us to focus on building CI/CD pipelines rather than troubleshooting Spinnaker,” said Leon Xiao, site reliability engineering manager, eHealth.

Scale Spinnaker Deployments to Kubernetes

Armory’s Agent for Kubernetes is a lightweight, scalable service that monitors each Kubernetes cluster and streams changes back to Spinnaker’s Clouddriver service, solving the following problems:

Latency issues that arise when caching large Kubernetes resources in Spinnaker;
Security and access issues that exist when Kubernetes clusters are managed by a central resource;
Bottleneck issues that surface when new Kubernetes clusters require onboarding by a central resource; and
Complexity issues stemming from supporting thousands of Kubernetes clusters that have tens of thousands of objects and multiple edge cases.
Armory and AWS Extend Use of Spinnaker

In collaboration with AWS, Armory recently added blue/green and canary support into Lambda deployments within Spinnaker. Learn more about the Lambda integration and Autodesk’s success with Armory and AWS here.

Armory will also soon be releasing an AWS Quick Start to make it simple to deploy a production-grade instance of Armory on AWS EKS. To learn more, AWS has a workshop scheduled on June 24 about continuous deployment for cloud-native applications that includes hands-on labs from Armory and others.

Simplified Spinnaker Installation

Armory Minnaker is a virtual machine leveraging K3s and the Armory Operator to enable software deployments in 10 minutes instead of 10 days. Armory Minnaker is a full Spinnaker installation packaged inside a virtual machine running the certified K3s Kubernetes distribution. Minnaker automatically handles authentication, security such as SSL/TLS, namespaces, custom resources in Kubernetes (CRD) and more.

Additionally, Armory has created pre-built DevOps pipelines, along with a self-guided tour of the platform to acquaint new users. All of this enables integration of Armory into DevOps toolchains, such as continuous integration (CI) systems, Git repositories, security tools, and targets for software distribution.

Spinnaker

Spinnaker is an open source, multi-cloud continuous delivery platform for releasing software changes with high velocity and confidence. Created at Netflix, it has been battle-tested in production by hundreds of teams over millions of deployments. It combines a powerful and flexible pipeline management system with integrations to the major cloud providers. Learn more at www.spinnaker.io.

Armory

Armory is the company driving modern digital transformation with its enterprise version of Spinnaker. Armory’s scalable, flexible, and secure platform automates software delivery, enabling software teams to ship better software, faster. The core of Armory’s platform is powered by Spinnaker, the continuous delivery platform developed and open-sourced by Netflix and Google to help companies quickly and safely deploy software into multiple clouds. Armory builds on open-source Spinnaker’s foundation, adding proprietary features for bolstered enterprise scale, along with 24×7 enterprise-grade support. Armory’s platform is trusted by dozens of Global 2000 customers in financial services, technology, retail, healthcare and entertainment. Armory is also a proud sponsor of, and contributor to, the Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF), the vendor-neutral home of the fastest-growing projects for continuous delivery.

Source:-https://devops.com/ Accurics today announced it has integrated its tool for discovering violations of security policies that occur when developers provision […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

Accurics today announced it has integrated its tool for discovering violations of security policies that occur when developers provision infrastructure as code with both the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform and the static application security assessment testing (SAST) tools from GitLab.

Om Moolchandani, chief information and security officer (CISO) and CTO for Accurics, said both integrations make it easier for developers to discover security issues earlier as part of a DevSecOps workflow using the company’s Terrascan tools.

Many of the issues organizations are having with cloud security these days can be traced back to misconfigurations created by developers when configuring infrastructure using tools such as Terraform. Accurics created Terrascan to identify those misconfigurations.

The integration with GitLab makes it easier to incorporate Terrascan into a DevOps workflow in a way that also aggregates data collected from both SAST and dynamic application security testing (DAST) tools, said Moolchandani. That approach effectively unifies what today are two separate cloud infrastructure and application development pipelines by enabling DevOps teams to employ threat scores to enforce security policies as code that are deemed too risky to deploy with block builds, he added.

At the same time, the integration with SAST and DAST tools provides the context developers need to prioritize remediation efforts before applications are deployed in a production environment, noted Moolchandani.

Organizations of all sizes are now trying to strike a balance between two conflicting agendas. On the one hand, infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools such as Terraform have played a critical role in enabling developers to build and deploy applications faster. The issue is that developers lack the security expertise required to ensure infrastructure is secured properly at a time when cybercriminals are more aggressively seeking to compromise software supply chains. Organizations most likely won’t slow down the rate at which applications are being deployed to make sure software supply chains are not compromised. However, in the absence of best DevSecOps practices—which still are not widely implemented—there may be a backlash against shifting application responsibility left toward developers.

The challenge that creates is most organizations don’t have enough security expertise available to review applications in a timely manner before they are deployed, which results in them hoping security issues will be discovered and remediated during the application update cycle before cybercriminals find a way to exploit a vulnerability.

Of course, hope does not make for an application security strategy. Organizations will need to find ways to enable developers to better secure applications while simultaneously making it easier for cybersecurity teams to maintain a zero-trust IT environment that reduces the chances organizations will be breached via, for example, a phishing attack to steal developer credentials.

Regardless of how DevSecOps workflows and zero-trust IT architectures are implemented, it’s clear organizations have run out of time to resolve longstanding security issues that are now making the kinds of headlines no one wants to see.

In the duality of continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), CI focuses on build automation. Leveraging CI practices for software delivery is normal for most organizations and can be seen as a solved problem. However, the demand for increasingly distributed applications has risen with the expansion of microservices, and development teams have the expectation that every commit should be a build.

Continuous integration has, surprisingly, become an unexpected bottleneck with these expectations. To begin modernizing CI, it’s important to first understand some of the challenges. Let’s dig in.

Challenges of Continuous Integration
Given that build and release candidates follow advancements in development technology closely — such as new languages, packaging and paradigms in testing the artifact — expanding the capabilities in continuous integration implementations can be challenging. With the introduction of containerized technology, the firepower and velocity required to build greatly increased.

Scaling Continuous Integration Platforms
The infrastructure required to run a distributed CI platform can be as complex as the applications they are building because of the heavy compute requirements. Consider how much a local machine’s resources are tied up during a local build and test cycle. Now, multiply that by the number of folks on a team or in an organization and you start to understand just how much compute power is being used. Distributed build runners are just one area that can be complex, and managing when new build nodes are spun up and spun down can depend on the platform/end user.

Keeping Up With the Technology Velocity
The adage of “the only constant in technology is change” is true. New languages, platforms and paradigms are to be expected as technology pushes forward. The ease of including new technologies in a heterogeneous build or accepting new testing paradigms, however, can be difficult for more rigid CI platforms. These legacy platforms were designed for only a small subset of technologies. With legacy or rigid approaches, the dependency management required to maintain technical velocity becomes a significant burden.

What it Takes to Modernize Continuous Integration
The simplest way to change continuous integration practices and platforms is to take what I call the four-pillar approach: platform infrastructure modernization, engineering efficiency strategy, test optimization and rapid pipeline development. Making strides in any of these pillars will put you on the path toward modernizing your continuous integration platforms and practices. Making strides in all of the pillars will set up your DevOps teams for significant success.

Platform Infrastructure Modernization
The location where the actual builds and packaging take place (e.g. build nodes/runners) do most of the heavy lifting and have a fairly elastic workload nature. Builds (e.g. a JAVA JAR build) and packaging (e.g. a Docker Image Compose) are compute-heavy tasks. Once the build and packaging are complete, the runners can sit idle. This shows the importance of having an ephemeral build node. The build node spins up during the task, then spins down or is destroyed after the build task is done, so as to not drain resources.

Engineering Efficiency Strategy
A core tenet of engineering efficiency is meeting your internal customers where they are. For software engineers, this means being as close to their tools and projects as possible. Like many modern pieces of application infrastructure, shifting left to the developer means being included in the project structure in source code management (SCM).

A common disconnect in CI platforms is dependency management. Over the past decade, for software engineers, this problem has been solved with package or build tools such as Maven, Gradle and NPM. Engineers need to simply define implicitly or explicitly what they need, and the dependencies will be resolved. Continuous integration tools can suffer from a disconnect, since we are leveraging several tools that potentially don’t have a common syntax. So, again, it’s important developers have close oversight on all the tools they need to complete their projects to reduce this friction.

Test Optimization
While initial confidence in getting tests into the CI pipeline expands, more tests — and sometimes inappropriate test coverage — is introduced by the ease of integration with the pipeline. An even harder problem to identify and rectify is flaky tests. A flaky test is one that both passes and fails periodically without any code changes. This becomes a twofold problem: increasing execution time and lack of confidence with flakiness. The most logical solution to avoid these issues is adding test optimization. A modern continuous integration solution should be able to visualize pipeline order, timings and overall execution to help identity (and eventually rectify) excessive coverage and flakiness.

Rapid Pipeline Development
Software is an exercise in iteration. The lower the barriers to entry for iteration to occur, the more gains in engineering efficiency and agility are achieved. Local builds happen dozens of times before reaching a committable stage, moving them forward to a dev-integration environment. It’s here where having a local environment is key. Oddly, most continuous integration pipelines are designed to run externally from a local machine. So, the ability to move to a local CI pipeline helps build confidence that the externally run pipeline will be successful.

Continue on Your Continuous Integration Journey
Continuous integration might seem like a solved problem for many organizations, but as with any technology, there is always room for improvement and modernization. Like any engineering efficiency paradigm, CI is a journey and the destination ever-evolving.

Source:-https://www.fiercetelecom.com/ AvidThink Principal Analyst Roy Chua will kick off the FierceTelecom Summer Blitz virtual event next week with a presentation […]

Source:-https://www.fiercetelecom.com/

AvidThink Principal Analyst Roy Chua will kick off the FierceTelecom Summer Blitz virtual event next week with a presentation on the topic of cloud native.

It’s an important topic because practically every telco in the world is in the process of introducing cloud-native technologies in its network.

Some greenfield operators such as Rakuten and Dish are building their networks with cloud-native technology from the onset.

Dish recently announced that it will use Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud to host its core and radio access network (RAN) for 5G. Chua said, “Dish is actually betting their whole farm on AWS.”

One thing that the panelists will discuss next week is the definition of cloud native. Chua said it is rather ambiguously defined. “At the highest level it’s building your applications to use the cloud delivery model and provide services in the cloud. Inside that, the technologies that are usually part of it are containers, service meshes, microservices, immutable infrastructure, the use of automation and the use of continuous integration and continuous delivery.”

Cloud native offers the ability to develop apps faster and to scale them to much larger numbers than is possible with traditional applications. Cloud-native applications also lower operational costs and require less effort to manage.

However, cloud native has some of its own challenges.

It’s a collection of services that are spun up as needed, and they have to coordinate and talk amongst each other. Chua said trouble-shooting can be tricky because microservices are ephemeral. If there’s a problem, the microservices may go away before the problem is fixed.

And in a cloud-native architecture, everything is disaggregated. “Disaggregation is great, but you have to put things back together,” he said. “That’s where Kubernetes comes in. It gives you a relatively lean way of orchestrating and managing your cloud-native, containerized services.”

Verizon is doing cloud native

Miguel Carames, director of network and technology planning at Verizon, will be speaking on next week’s FierceTelecom panel. Of cloud native, he said, “It’s all about decoupling the app from the infrastructure and getting more common services provided by the infrastructure itself.”

He said cloud native is much more efficient because it eliminates a lot of duplication. Traditionally, each application had a lot of administrative functions, and those were replicated across all the applications. “Cloud native is: find these common functions and make sure this is provided by the platform,” said Carames. “The containers that are handling can access that information as needed, but they can go to these microservices where the state is stored as opposed to having to replicate. This is all built in our telco cloud.”

Verizon’s telco cloud is known as the Verizon Cloud Platform (VCP). It has different flavors with different capabilities depending on where it is deployed in the network, whether core, edge or RAN.

“When we started this virtualization journey, containers were not mature enough to trust for telco workloads,” said Carames. Instead, Verizon built its VCP using OpenStack software. But its new 5G standalone core is being built with cloud-native software. “Things that are already in OpenStack we will leverage them because we already made the investment, we’ll have that in the network,” he said. “But as we get to end-of-life considerations on hardware, we will be moving legacy to cloud native as well. Everything that is new will be deployed in cloud native.”

Of the challenges to moving to cloud native, Carames cited people and culture. “We need to train all the teams, even the planning role. You need operations and planning to be a lot more aware and understand how apps interact.”

He said the other challenge relates to working with Verizon’s vendors. “In many ways our vendors provide something, but we provide the platform, and we have to share our specs so they can come and integrate. The network vendors need to know the architecture.”

Speaking of vendors, Ericsson VP of Core, IT & Cloud Technology Ravi Vaidyanathan will also be participating on the Fierce panel next week. His group at Ericsson is helping operators on their cloud-native journey. “We have our cloud infrastructure offering — a telco-grade, container-as-a-service platform based on open source Kubernetes,” said Vaidyanathan. “We’re working on the bare metal versions of cloud native.”

He said when it comes to applications, Ericsson has used 5G as a key transition technology to build a 5G portfolio from the ground up as cloud native.

Similar to Carames, he said one of the big benefits of a cloud-native architecture is that common features don’t have to be replicated myriad times. “I can focus on my network functions,” said Vaidyanathan. “I don’t need to focus on something like logging.”

Another benefit of cloud native is streamlined operations and the rapid pace of introducing new features. “Amazon launches dozens of services every day,” said Vaidyanathan. “Telcos are aspirational at looking to match that pace.”

While Ericsson has been helping telcos on their cloud-native journey, the vendor decided to also adopt cloud-native processes for it own internal software development.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/ FREDERICK, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Spirent Communications plc (LSE:SPT) today announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to bring automated 5G […]

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com/

FREDERICK, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Spirent Communications plc (LSE:SPT) today announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to bring automated 5G testing capabilities to communications service providers (CSPs) building 5G networks on AWS. Spirent’s market-first Landslide 5GC Automation Package is designed to help carriers to rapidly deploy 5G networks on AWS, significantly reducing operational costs, time, and resources compared to manual testing.

By combining AWS’s Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline with Spirent’s vendor-neutral 5G test capabilities, CSPs will be able to objectively, rapidly, and continuously validate mobile network functions and services across a wide range of requirements, including compliance, capacity, and performance dimensions. The combined solution is aimed at mobile carriers who want to accelerate delivery of 5G services on AWS.

“Service providers around the world are facing a number of distinct challenges as they look to deliver on the promise of 5G,” said Doug Roberts, general manager of Spirent’s Lifecycle Service Assurance business. “The race is on to deploy new 5G technology, but because it is highly complex and new, there is a genuine lack of expertise and resources available to establish and deliver the vital 5G core testing and validation necessary to successfully get these complex networks and services to market.”

With the introduction of 5G Network Validation on AWS, utilizing Spirent’s Landslide 5GC Automation Package, operators can easily leverage the fully integrated 5G test automation capabilities to rapidly test and validate both deployments and updates of 5G network functions and services. It provides a continuous delivery framework using AWS CodePipeline, together with its security and observability best practices, and is available in all AWS Regions. The solution is fully decoupled and highly scalable, supporting many parallel tests, while allowing several types of network tests which can be automatically triggered as part of the 5G Network application pipeline.

“Manually establishing such complex testing requirements is a very time-consuming process, typically running into many months,” says Roberts. “Thanks to our new collaboration with AWS, service providers can leverage Spirent’s 5G expertise and proven test methodologies to easily incorporate automated 5G testing and validation on AWS, reducing months to minutes. They will be able to test with confidence, dramatically accelerate time-to-market, and analysis shows significant cost savings can be achieved compared to traditional manual testing methods.”

CSPs can simply trigger the tests and complete validation with no additional need for manual testing or development of their own testing suites. It can reduce the risk of service failure by testing multi-vendor 5G core elements and accelerate test automation without the need to construct from scratch.

Spirent Communications plc. (LSE: SPT) is the leading global provider of automated test and assurance solutions for networks, cybersecurity, and positioning. The company provides innovative products, services and managed solutions that address the test, assurance, and automation challenges of a new generation of technologies, including 5G, SD-WAN, cloud, autonomous vehicles and beyond. From the lab to the real world, Spirent helps companies deliver on their promise to their customers of a new generation of connected devices and technologies.

Source:-https://biztechmagazine.com/ That collaboration can take many forms, and for the uninitiated, approaches such as DevOps or agile development can be […]

Source:-https://biztechmagazine.com/

That collaboration can take many forms, and for the uninitiated, approaches such as DevOps or agile development can be hard to grasp at a high level — and they may seem like the same thing.

But while they may do similar things, agile and DevOps have some notable differences, and their greatest power may emerge when they come together in one cultural piece.

What Is Agile Development?
First codified during a 2001 meeting at a ski resort in Utah, agile development is an approach built around a philosophy that emphasizes collaborative responses and quick change. The Agile Manifesto that came out of that meeting broke down the importance of a customer-driven approach to development that favors the individual over process.

Since that point, agile development has exploded into a full-on discipline that’s widely used throughout the business world. According to one 2019 study, 97 percent of organizations use agile in some way, shape or form, but there is room for further uptake, as 48 percent of respondents say that less than half of their teams are agile.

While there were elements that predated the formalizing of a modern development processes, says Tara Hernandez, a senior engineering manager at Google, many of the concepts of DevOps later evolved through agile development’s encouragement of faster development cycles and close collaboration.

“As far as starting to formalize the discussion, the Agile Manifesto talked a lot about the 12 principles, earlier time-to-market and more interaction with customers,” she says, encapsulating the approach as: “What are the things that make your organization engage?”

The Key Principles of the Agile Manifesto
The Agile Manifesto’s 12 principles, as described by the Agile Alliance, include:

Customer satisfaction: The highest priority of an agile development approach is to satisfy customers through continuous delivery of software.
Frequent release cycles: Agile development relies on release cycles of a few weeks to a few months.
Close collaboration: Business staff should work closely with developers on the project.
Sustainable development: The approach should allow for a constant pace that can continue indefinitely.
There are different types of agile development — most notably, scrum, a sprint-driven approach that is most common among agile proponents — but ultimately, the goals of agile development focus on continuous software development that considers the needs of the consumer and can adapt to changes as they happen.

What Is DevOps?
Often described in the same breath as agile development, DevOps is a similar method that leans on improving processes so things get done faster.

DevOps, which was formalized around 2009 but whose roots date back years earlier, refers to a merger between development and IT operations that applies continuous integration methodologies to traditional infrastructure development.

While not limited to settings such as the cloud and the server room, DevOps is often associated with those technologies. A good example of this in action is DevSecOps, which extends the approach specifically to security needs so that response time is minimized and vulnerabilities are quickly detected.

How Does Agile Development Differ from DevOps?
DevOps, in many ways, is a maturation of the agile development approach, as both represent a reaction to the separated-out waterfall style of development. One term used in reference to both disciplines is the idea of “shifting left,” in which practices associated with later parts of a waterfall process are considered much earlier in an agile or DevOps process.

But in many ways, DevOps moves faster and has a different target audience. As a blog post from the tech education platform Guru99 notes, there are significant differences in scale, audience and the way that teams are structured. Agile development tends to enable problem-solving within smaller teams, while DevOps by nature tends to work across departments to help solve larger goals quickly.

Basically, DevOps “brings two large siloed teams together to allow for quicker software releases while Agile is focused on getting smaller teams to collaborate with each other so it can react quickly to the ever-changing consumer needs,” wrote Kaya Ismail in a 2018 comparison of the technologies for CMS Wire.

The role of interaction also differs in each approach: For example, DevOps leans heavily on process automation using tools such as Infrastructure as Code, while agile focuses on a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

How Can Agile and DevOps Be Used Together?
Despite differences between the two methodologies, a general understanding of the role of each can help pinpoint compatibility between the processes. With individual teams taking an agile development approach within a broader DevOps culture, the processes can be combined in a way that’s very complementary.

You do not need to choose between DevOps or agile — instead, you can make use of both methodologies. Agile is strong on methods to organize work, such as through Scrum or Kanban, and DevOps drives a broader culture of getting software delivered faster and more reliably.

In many ways, there is a lot of compatibility in how agile development and DevOps work that makes them very complementary. Hernandez notes that the evolution of DevOps formalized many of the ideas of agile, and as a result, both work at a cultural level, rather than as purely technical approaches.

“The key thing is, what do you need to do, both from a cultural standpoint and a technology standpoint, to enable fast, high-quality velocity of delivery? And it has to be cultural, because technology all by itself — no matter what some vendors will tell you — never solves these types of problems,” she says.

How Can Organizations Implement an Agile Approach to DevOps?
Ultimately, agile and DevOps can work well together, but there must be an understanding of the relationship between speed and quality, Hernandez says, noting that this may be different for every organization.

“Really understand what problem you are trying to solve, then tailor your efforts to that problem,” she says. “Otherwise, you’re likely not going to get what you want.”

Working with a strong partner, such as CDW Amplified™ Services, can help get you there. Only your organization will know what the perfect balance is between your agile teams and a DevOps-friendly culture, but having a helping hand to do the cultural work can maximize your technical capabilities.

Source:-https://devops.com/ Today’s organizations need to enable their IT teams to rapidly deploy, manage and maintain their applications and services. This […]

Source:-https://devops.com/

Today’s organizations need to enable their IT teams to rapidly deploy, manage and maintain their applications and services. This is a primary driver behind the growth in adoption of DevOps. By uniting the IT operations and software development teams, organizations are helping to provide continuous delivery and accelerating the systems development life cycle.

At the same time, the chronic cyberskills shortage makes it hard for organizations to find the talent they need to hire and collaborate with. The cloud, and specifically cloud desktops, can address many of these challenges and help organizations get the most bang for their buck when it comes to their DevOps teams. In fact, the two technologies have a symbiotic relationship.

DevOps Hiring Challenges
Due to the shortage of individuals with key skills, organizations are facing a significant challenge these days as they try to find the right developers. In fact, a recent report by the Linux Foundation and edX finds organizations are searching for more people with open source DevOps skills (65%) than developers (59%) for the first time.

It is possible, in some instances, to hire remotely, but there are potential snags. For instance, hiring people in another country will likely entail a visa process that can take several months to complete. And collaboration with external project partners can create project bottlenecks that inhibit productivity.

Once the people you need have been hired, the onboarding process begins. Getting new hires settled in a workflow and procuring and shipping the laptops or workstations they need takes at least a couple more weeks before they can even begin to become productive. But organizations want to be able to hire developers anywhere they can find the right people and they need them to be productive within hours, not weeks or months.

Collaboration Woes
DevOps teams cannot function without collaboration, but this, too, can be difficult – particularly if those teams are geographically dispersed. Developer teams have attempted to solve this problem by adopting a variety of technologies, such as legacy VDI solutions, VPNs for remote work, physical workstations connected over a WAN and more. These technologies have helped solve some of the problems, but they’ve also introduced a host of other issues that negatively affect productivity and increase cost and complexity. That includes lack of performance, unreliable user experience, IP security concerns and data management problems.

Cloud Desktops: A New Approach
In light of all that isn’t working, it’s clear that a new approach is needed. Cloud desktops offer many advantages when it comes to addressing some of the key challenges DevOps teams face. For one thing, they make onboarding much easier. By using cloud desktops and workstations, all that the new, talented software developer needs is a device and an internet connection, and they instantly become a part of the development team. This resolves another headache that consumes unnecessary IT resources.

Shipping and hardware preferences are no longer an issue with the cloud desktop model. There is no more shipping, no more maintenance overhead, no more Windows-versus-Mac debates. Now, developers can pick the device they want, depending on their role requirements. They can even use smartphones and tablets in docking stations instead of laptops to connect and work in the fully configured and secure cloud desktops.

Benefits for Developers and Testers
Because cloud desktops support multiple desktop images, they are ideal for DevOps teams. For developers, this means that they can have multiple desktops, all with differing versions, all kept separate. This is great news if you don’t want to have to keep reimaging a physical device.

Giving a developer a persistent desktop is one option that cloud desktops enable. Another option is the ability to give the developer a brand-new, “clean” cloud desktop every day (non-persistent). For enterprises, this means they can control the developers’ IDE so code leaks don’t happen from one release to the next, intellectual property is better protected and they can enforce stronger overall data security.

Testers benefit as well, as they know they’ll have a totally clean, brand-new cloud desktop every day. This allows them to test and test again in isolation, knowing nothing was left behind from a previous test. In addition, the right cloud desktop enables anytime, anyplace collaboration; geographic limits become a thing of the past.

Empowering DevOps
The speed and agility of DevOps have made it a mainstay of software development, but certain criteria must be met for it to succeed. Its premise is faster delivery times, but companies cannot provide continuous delivery if they don’t have the skilled DevOps talent they need. Once they’re recruited and hired, provisioning often takes up more valuable time.

With the clock ticking, organizations need to select skilled individuals, regardless of their location, and get them working and collaborating as quickly as possible. Cloud desktops address both of these challenges. In addition, they improve the user experience compared to typical VDI solutions – even for compute-heavy users. Cloud desktops increase time-to-productivity, too. As you equip and add to your DevOps team, consider the benefits of adding cloud desktops to the mix.

Source:-https://containerjournal.com/

Observability is a staple of high-performing software and DevOps teams. Research shows that a comprehensive observability solution, along with a number of other technical practices, positively contributes to continuous delivery and service uptime.

Observability is sometimes confused with monitoring, but there is a clear difference between the two; it’s important to understand the distinction. Observability refers to a technical solution that enables teams to actively debug a system. It is based on exploring activities, properties and patterns that are not defined in advance. Monitoring, on the other hand, is a technical solution that enables teams to watch and understand the state of their systems, and is based on gathering predefined sets of metrics or logs.

What Makes Kubernetes Observability Different?
Conventional observability and monitoring tools were designed for monolithic systems; observing the health and behavior of a single application instance. Complex distributed microservices architectures, like Kubernetes, are constantly changing, with hundreds and even thousands of pods being created and destroyed within minutes. Because this environment is so dynamic, pre-defined metrics and logs aren’t effective for troubleshooting issues. Conventional observability approaches, which work well in traditional, monolithic environments, are inadequate for Kubernetes. So, an observability solution that is purpose-built for a distributed microservices architecture is needed to match the unpredictable nature of Kubernetes cluster behavior, and to capture the data required for teams to identify and troubleshoot issues in real time.

Kubernetes Observability Challenges
Kubernetes provides abstraction and simplicity with a declarative model to program complex deployments. However, when it comes to debugging microservices, this abstraction and simplicity actually creates complexity. There are several reasons why.

Kubernetes microservices architecture itself is complex, involving tens to hundreds of microservices that are communicating. Debugging this architecture requires specialized tools.
Kubernetes clusters run on a distributed infrastructure that is spread across on-premises, hybrid and cloud environments.
Kubernetes infrastructure is dynamic. The platform spins up required resources and provides ephemeral infrastructure to scale the application based on demand.
Kubernetes deployments need fine-grained security and an observability model that complements a defense-in-depth approach. Some DNS issues, for example, can indicate a compromised resource in the cluster.
Given the complex nature of Kubernetes microservices deployments and the overwhelming amount of data generated, it’s not humanly possible to diagnose and troubleshoot this kind of environment. This becomes even more problematic when mission-critical applications are involved. Given the density of applications and the dynamic nature of the computing environment, the problem is worsening each day.

Enabling Kubernetes Observability with Artificial Intelligence
Existing tools are inadequate. It’s time to reimagine a solution for this critical observability problem. We can start by applying machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to observability; in effect, deploying machines to debug machines. By automating dynamic monitoring processes, for example, we can create intelligent observability that converts telemetry data into actionable insights. We can use AI to analyze this data and identify problem patterns, and create unique observability “snapshots” which can be used to build reference templates that can be catalogued and accessed by troubleshooting teams when issues arise.

Kubernetes introduces dynamism to distributed infrastructure, and a high level of complexity for troubleshooting teams. By applying machine learning and AI to observability, we can open exciting new avenues to make Kubernetes more consistently reliable and secure, speed time to root cause analysis and resolution, and make it easier for new SREs, DevOps engineers and service owners to effectively debug dynamic, distributed Kubernetes environments.

Source:-https://devops.com/

CircleCI today previewed the ability to deploy applications on platforms based on Arm processors in a forthcoming release of its namesake continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform.

Tom Trahan, vice president of business development for CircleCI, said that Arm processors are rapidly being embraced by DevOps teams seeking to take advantage of the price/performance advantages they currently have over conventional x86 processors. Amazon Web Services (AWS), for example, makes available an AWS Graviton2 service based on 64-bit Arm Neoverse processors that it claims provides a 40% advantage in overall price/performance.

The Arm community, meanwhile, has adopted many of the libraries employed on x86 platforms, Trahan noted, which is making it simpler to automate the deployment of applications on Arm-based platforms using a CI/CD platform.

It’s not clear how quickly developers are building applications for Arm processors. Historically, Arm processors can be found in a wide range of embedded systems typically deployed at the network edge. However, cloud services based on Arm processors are also becoming more widely available, and it’s only a matter of time before more Arm-based platforms are deployed in on-premises IT environments.

Arm itself is also in the process of being acquired by Nvidia, which envisions running machine learning algorithms, and other classed of advanced workloads, on both Arm processors and graphics processing units (GPUs). Many of the early efforts to build processors optimized for running AI workloads at the network edge are based on Arm processors.

The addition of Arm platforms to any IT environment will naturally create some management challenges for DevOps teams. In some cases, developers may even decide to build applications using, for example, the latest generation of machines from Apple, that are based on Arm processors, to streamline the application development and deployment process. In other cases, however, applications that are intended to be deployed on Arm processors might still be built on x86 systems.

Regardless of approach, the arrival of more Arm-based platforms in the enterprise doesn’t mean other classes of processors are going to fade away. Rather, from a processor perspective, IT environments are about to become a lot more diverse as more workloads are deployed on a wider range of processors. It may be quite a while before Arm-based platforms usurp x86-based systems that still dominate the IT landscape. However, during any turbulent economic time, the number of organizations inclined to reduce the total cost of IT by embracing new platforms always increases.

Fortunately, as more IT infrastructure is managed as code, the easier it becomes to switch platforms. There may even come a day when the decisions about which platform to employ and when is completely automated by machine learning algorithms trained to maximize IT infrastructure efficiency to the fullest extent possible.

In the meantime, DevOps teams should expect, to one degree or another, to revisit their workflows processes in the months ahead. Not only are more workloads being pushed out to edge computing platforms where Arm processors are commonly found, those Arm processors will soon find their way into the rest of the extended enterprise.

Source:-https://www.dqindia.com/

Technology is undoubtedly ruling over us lately. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, technology is our best bet today. At present, no industries are left untouched from adopting cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Some industries that adopted AI and ML include automotive industries, health, logistics, etc. The hospitality sector in India has also not been exempted from adopting such world-class technology to ensure profit maximization in the competitive market.

The hospitality industry encompasses a broad category of fields like tourism, lodging, transport, event planning, theme parks, and others. It is undoubtedly a wide sector, but notably, the leaders in the field seem to be the hotels and accommodation along with restaurants and bars. The hospitality sector in India strongly requires the much-needed application of AI and ML. It is not only for surviving in the pandemic scenario but also for maximizing their profit margins. This industry mostly caters to the wants of the customers more than their needs. Therefore, companies in the hospitality sector must adopt AI and ML for ensuring continuous delivery of their best services at a competitive price to their customers. Here’s how AI and ML help the hospitality sector in ensuring survival and profits.

Artificial intelligence enhances hotel operations

Answering customer calls, attending front desk guests while responding to online guest queries simultaneously is no more a troublesome issue that existed for so long. With Artificial Intelligence (AI), staff does not need to work under high-quality performance pressure and perform like robots which leads to poor service quality. Chatbots emerged as a saviour and a boon to assist a multitude of guests effortlessly. Chatbots take care of all the online queries from potential customers while the front desk staff can serve the guests in a hassle-free manner, thereby enhancing hotel operations without compromising on any customer.

AI boosts personalized services

AI personalization synthesizes diverse customer data sets to extract relevant insights. By leveraging the priceless insights, the hotels can target great marketing efforts and deliver outstanding services. This helps in offering a seamless customer experience. With AI, hotels can properly understand the preferences of each customer. AI chatbots also offer a personalized conversation that effectively addresses the individual needs of every customer more conveniently and helpfully. Customers prefer a fast response to all their queries, especially online. AI chatbots complement it by facilitating immediate response and managing multiple customer needs seamlessly.

Competitive pricing via ML

What’s important for every business to survive in the marketplace is to use a competitive pricing strategy. The hospitality sector leverages competitive pricing strategies that are considered to be one of the most significant strategies to attract customers and enhance sales without compromising on profits. What helps in achieving this is Machine Learning. It helps to achieve the best possible pricing for services based on hotel history, seasonability, local competition, external real-time events, local events, third-party promotions, etc. Basis such factors, the data is run via predictive models and can be analyzed to offer competitive pricing for companies that help them achieve an edge in the broad marketplace.

ML improves customer service and satisfaction

Customers belong from varied backgrounds so their expectations, needs, and demands differ from each other. A process known as Market Segmentation is employed in every sector, including the hospitality sector, to ensure that each customer’s wish is fulfilled according to their tastes and preferences. The entire customer spectrum is segregated into various segments with more or less similar expectations and demands. With Machine Learning (ML), the customer spectrum becomes more diverse into extremely smaller groups and sub-groups that were not witnessed ever before. This process improves the quality of customer service and satisfaction by ensuring a more profitable business.

Summing up

Both Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are leading the way to innovation in every sector. They continue to be explored and applied to new sectors every day. The hospitality sector should also leverage these technologies to tackle the unseen problems and challenges to satisfy the customers. Therefore, from enhancing a hotel’s operation, offering personalized services & competitive pricing to improving customer satisfaction via phenomenal service, the role of AI and ML to maximize profits in the hospitality sector is unparalleled. It shows us the untapped potential of the technologies that own the ability to change the face of the hospitality sector.

Source:-https://devops.com/

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 02, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — JFrog Ltd. (“JFrog”) (NASDAQ: FROG), creators of the DevOps platform to enable Liquid Software with continuous software updates, today announced that its DevOps Platform tools – JFrog Artifactory and JFrog Xray – are available with native deployment templates for customers using AWS GovCloud (US) and Azure Government clouds.

Regulated industries and customers who use Government Clouds’ secured environments can use these deployment options – that provide native, simple, and secure installation – along with their existing JFrog self-hosted license, to benefit from JFrog’s solutions in these environments. This enables them to easily take advantage of JFrog’s solutions to streamline their DevOps adoption at scale and to accelerate and secure their software releases.

JFrog Artifactory is the universal software package management and container registry solution, and JFrog Xray provides continuous security and compliance management for open source security vulnerabilities and license scanning. JFrog Artifactory and JFrog Xray are both part of the JFrog DevOps Platform. Together, Artifactory and Xray are the backbone for enterprises’ DevSecOps efforts and continuous software delivery at scale – particularly for regulated, demanding organizations that must meet strict security, compliance, and data privacy requirements as they build and release software rapidly. Expanding JFrog’s availability across the different public clouds to support native deployments on AWS GovCloud and Azure Government Cloud in multiple regions enables customers to easily deploy JFrog’s DevOps solutions directly on these secured environments.

“Enterprise DevOps, especially within regulated organizations, requires solutions that support the scale, security, compliance, and management requirements of these demanding sectors,” said Casey O’Mara, Vice President of Business Development and Global Alliances at JFrog. “We are excited to expand our cloud offering and streamline deployment on the largest government cloud providers. This enables customers in highly regulated industries to seamlessly and continuously build, secure and release software, with the benefits of JFrog’s DevOps solutions in secure cloud environments.”

AWS GovCloud customers can use the AWS Marketplace to quickly deploy JFrog’s solutions in the US East and US West regions. Similarly, Azure Government customers can deploy JFrog’s services from the Azure Marketplace, on any of the following three regions of Azure Government: Arizona, Virginia and Texas. Once deployed, customers on either cloud can then provide their JFrog enterprise subscriptions’ license key(s) to leverage the enterprise-grade capabilities.

The JFrog Platform is offered either as a self-hosted solution that customers can install on hybrid, on-prem, or multi-cloud environments, or as a SaaS subscription offered on all public clouds. JFrog already offers its solutions – encompassing all the platform capabilities for large-scale software delivery – on AWS, Azure and GCP, across 18 cloud regions including Private Instances. This recent addition of Bring Your Own License (BYOL) and easy deployment across the Government Clouds provides large organizations additional flexibility and different deployment options to meet their needs for highly-regulated, secured use cases.

JFrog
JFrog is on a “Liquid Software” mission to enable the flow of software updates seamlessly and securely from the developer’s keystrokes to production. JFrog’s end-to-end, Universal, Hybrid DevOps Platform provides the tools and visibility required by modern software development organizations to fully embrace the power of DevOps. JFrog’s Platform is available as open-source, self-managed, and SaaS services (with free tier) on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. JFrog is trusted by millions of developers and thousands of customers, including the majority of the Fortune 100 companies that depend on JFrog solutions to manage their DevOps pipelines.

Source:-https://www.businesswire.com

a global provider of digital transformation consulting and development services, has been selected by Forrester in its “Now Tech: Continuous Automation and Testing Services Providers, Q1 2021″ report.

Companies undergoing digital transformation are constantly met with the challenges of delivering business value while achieving higher quality, greater efficiency, and faster turnaround times. The Forrester report discusses the modern approach to application development and delivery and highlights the benefits of continuous automation and testing. According to Forrester, “to achieve quality at speed, adaptive delivery teams must improve and scale their software testing capabilities by testing early, often, automatically, and continuously.”

Grid Dynamics has been a strong proponent of continuous automation and testing and has built a strong portfolio of solutions to address the needs of modern enterprises that includes DevOps 2.0, DataOps, MLOps, lightweight continuous delivery, data quality, test data management, continuous testing in production, chaos engineering, and AI-powered testing. When combined with microservices architecture and cloud platforms, these solutions lead to a 10x increase in speed to market, while reducing defects and infrastructure costs.

Max Martynov, Chief Technology Officer at Grid Dynamics, explained: “Companies that take a traditional approach to test and release automation are often left disappointed at the outcome. Flaky tests, long CI pipelines, and high cost of test environments cripple speed to market and lead to bloated infrastructure costs. We have successfully applied our digital-native engineering culture, cutting edge technologies, and proven solutions to redesign the processes, accelerate speed to market and power digital transformation.”

Grid Dynamics
Grid Dynamics (Nasdaq: GDYN) is a digital-native technology services provider that accelerates growth and bolsters competitive advantage for Fortune 1000 companies.
