<p>According to data made available by Canalys on June 23, the expenditure on cloud infrastructure services in the Chinese market grew by 55% in the first quarter of 2021, reaching $6 billion. As the Chinese government has made cloud computing its top strategic priority, it has promoted the development of cloud infrastructure services, with the Chinese market growing faster than the rest of the world.</p>
<p>China is the second largest market after the United States, accounting for 14% of global investment, higher than 12% in the first quarter of 2020. The country’s four major cloud service providers are Alibaba Cloud, Huawei Cloud, Tencent Cloud and Baidu AI Cloud, which together account for more than 80% of the total expenditure.</p>
<p>Canalys pointed out that Alibaba Cloud led the market with a 40% share, but its growth slowed to 38% in the first quarter. This is due to the termination of the contract by a major customer to comply with data ownership requirements outside China. Alibaba Cloud is also under strict scrutiny from China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, which led to a fine in April for violating anti-monopoly laws.</p>
<p>Huawei Cloud achieved the biggest increase in the quarter, surging 116% and accounting for 20% of the market share. Its rapid growth benefits from Internet customers and government projects, as well as major victories in the automotive industry. Huawei is currently building its largest data center facility in the Guian New Area, Guizhou province, to provide services for Southwest China.</p>
<p>Tencent ranks third with a 14% share. Baidu AI Cloud is the fourth largest cloud service provider, accounting for 7% of the total expenditure in the first quarter of 2021.</p>
<p>Cloud computing has been growing rapidly for many years, as more and more companies seek to work remotely, improve efficiency through automation and save money on IT infrastructure. According to a 2021 Gartner report, it is estimated that the global end-user expenditure on public cloud services will increase by 23.1% to $332.3 billion in 2021 from $270 billion in 2020.</p>
<p>According to Gartner, Google occupied 5% of the cloud infrastructure market in 2019, while Amazon had 45% and Microsoft had about 18%.</p>
<p>“Companies can use these services without purchasing or installing physical infrastructure. They can get exactly what they need when they need it, and expand or reduce services as demand changes,” said Dr. Scott Overmyer, Associate Dean of Information Technology at Southern New Hampshire University.</p>

<p>Italy plans to set up a national agency tasked with combating cyber attacks as it continues work on its unified cloud infrastructure.</p>
<p>The country is one of many European nations attempting to enhance their cybersecurity capabilities.</p>
<p>Many aspects of Italy’s digital security, which are dispersed among various Ministers and state bodies, are to be brought together under the authority of the Prime Minister.</p>
<p>The general director and his deputy will be appointed for four years, according to a draft decree reportedly seen by Reuters. Their mandate can only be renewed once.</p>
<p>The new agency will involve six departments and will, in the first instance, be staffed by 300 employees, with the intention of boosting this number to 800 by 2027.</p>
<p>In April 2021, the Italian Government delivered a 2,500-page recovery plan tothe European Commission, which detailed an intention to utilise new cloud technology for public administration to increase security.</p>
<p>The plan would need investment from the EU with about €900 million apparently earmarked for it.</p>
<p>The project would also involve overseas tech companies, Innovation Minister Vittorio Colao announced in May.</p>
<p>With American-owned Amazon, Google and Microsoft being the world’s major cloud players, concerns over potential surveillance had been raised due to the adoption of the U.S. CLOUD Act of 2018.</p>
<p>Italy intends to create the cloud infrastructure through a public-private partnership, which will be implemented by a European tender.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s important to remember, however, that there is much more to cloud computing than simply storage, including software-as-a-service (SaaS), platform-as-a-service, and more. This provides investors with a multitude of ways to profit from the accelerating move to the cloud.</p>
<p>With a large and growing list of cloud-native products and services, investors are looking for the best ways to capitalize on this opportunity and ride the increasing wave of cloud adoption. These three companies offer investors clear and ongoing opportunities to profit from the trend.</p>
<p><strong>1. HubSpot: Rapidly expanding its suite of services</strong><br />
While it began life as an inbound marketing specialist, HubSpot (NYSE:HUBS) has quickly evolved and expanded its aspirations to become a one-stop-shop for customer relationship management (CRM).</p>
<p>The company has copied liberally from the successful template employed by salesforce.com, increasing its functionality with a series of successful, snap-on acquisitions. In fact, HubSpot has made five multi-billion-dollar acquisitions &#8212; as well as a multitude of smaller ones &#8212; over the past five years alone.</p>
<p>As a result of this platform expansion, HubSpot now provides marketing, sales, and service support, as well as content management and operations products. Each new offering has resulted in a growing market opportunity, with some estimates placing HubSpot&#8217;s total addressable market at about $20 billion. The company currently has roughly 114,000 customers, which pales in comparison to its total addressable market of more than 3 million small- and medium-sized businesses with a website.</p>
<p>The proof is in the pudding. During the first quarter, HubSpot delivered revenue that grew 41% year over year. Subscription revenue also climbed 41%, while professional services revenue jumped 43%. Additionally, the company&#8217;s total customer count grew by 45% and spending per customer was on par with the prior-year quarter.</p>
<p>These results aren&#8217;t a one-time thing, either. Since late 2014, HubSpot&#8217;s revenue has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 41%, while its international revenue has grown at 58%. At the same time, its margins have continued to expand and its free cash flow has rocketed higher.</p>
<p><strong>2. NVIDIA: Providing the processing power that unpins cloud computing</strong><br />
While investors might not immediately think of NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) when considering cloud computing investments, its cutting-edge processors have become the industry standard for powering cloud computing and data center operations.</p>
<p>The same graphics processing units (GPUs) that render lifelike images in video games also underpin the unique challenges presented by cloud computing. The secret is the parallel processing, or the ability to conduct a multitude of complicated mathematical calculations simultaneously, thereby reducing the amount of time necessary to complete complex tasks and speeding up the most complex algorithms.</p>
<p>Each of the world&#8217;s largest cloud providers depends on NVIDIA state-of-the-art processors to power their systems. Its customer list reads like a Who&#8217;s-Who of cloud providers. They include Amazon&#8217;s AWS, Alphabet&#8217;s Google Cloud, International Business Machines&#8217; IBM Cloud, Microsoft&#8217;s Azure, and Alibaba Cloud, just to name a few.</p>
<p>Yet NVIDIA has just begun to tap this massive opportunity, as evidenced by its most recent results. In the first quarter, data center revenue &#8212; which includes cloud computing, data center, and artificial intelligence applications &#8212; grew 79% year over year, accounting for 36% of NVIDIA&#8217;s total sales. At the same time, its gaming segment, which represents the lion&#8217;s share of its revenue, grew 106%. Total revenue grew 84%, a remarkable feat for a company with a market cap of $436 billion &#8212; and this could be just the beginning.</p>
<p>NVIDIA generated revenue of $16.68 billion in 2020, which pales in comparison to the company&#8217;s total addressable market, which management estimates will reach $250 billion over the next few years.</p>
<p><strong>3. DocuSign: Digital signatures are just the beginning</strong><br />
Many investors are familiar with DocuSign (NASDAQ:DOCU), which provides cloud-based tools to sign documents. The company is the undisputed leader in the electronic signature space, with a whopping 70% share of a market that continues to grow. What investors may not know is that e-signatures are just the beginning of a large and growing opportunity for DocuSign, a fact that CEO Dan Springer is quick to point out.</p>
<p>&#8220;Typically, e-signature is the first step that many customers take on their broader digital transformation journey with us,&#8221; said CEO Dan Springer on a recent earnings call. &#8220;So from a financial point of view, we believe this surge in e-signature adoption bodes well for future Agreement Cloud expansion.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Agreement Cloud is the next step in DocuSign&#8217;s evolution, providing a dozen software applications and more than 350 integrations designed to manage the entire lifecycle of contracts and agreements. For example, once a contract is signed, the system can trigger the creation of a bill. An agreement up for renewal? A reminder is generated. There are hundreds of similar use cases including employee on-boarding, non-disclosure agreements, change orders, new customer forms, vendor/supplier agreements, and much more.</p>
<p>The strategy is not only working, but the business is on fire. For DocuSign&#8217;s fiscal 2022 first quarter (ended April 30, 2021), revenue grew 58% year over year, accelerating from 39% growth in the prior-year quarter. Perhaps more importantly, subscription revenue grew at an even faster pace, up 61%. At the same time, billings &#8212; a sales growth metric that factors in changes in deferred subscription revenue &#8212; climbed 54%. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) more than tripled.</p>
<p>DocuSign generated total revenue of $1.5 billion last year, but its remaining opportunity is vast. With the addition of the Agreement Cloud, DocuSign management estimates that its total addressable market has doubled to more than $50 billion, leaving a long runway for growth.</p>
<p><strong>You get what you pay for</strong><br />
Each of these stocks has vastly outperformed the market over the past year, with no signs of slowing. Bears will be quick to point out that these stocks are by no means cheap when measured using traditional valuation metrics. HubSpot, NVIDIA, and DocuSign are currently selling for 23, 19, and 18 times sales, respectively &#8212; when a good price-to-sales ratio for a stock is generally between one and two.</p>
<p>That said, each of these cloud-native companies has a strong position within its industry and is riding the secular tailwind of cloud adoption to new heights. As a result, investors have thus far been willing to pay up for the impressive topline growth and the promise of explosive profits that each represents.</p>

<p>Governor Brian Kemp formed a joint initiative on Wednesday between Georgia’s Technical College System, Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Georgia Technology Association, and Amazon Web Services to train 5,500 learners across the state in cloud computing. Announced that it will provide education.</p>
<p>Through this initiative, Georgia high schools and colleges of technology offer cloud computing courses and qualifications tailored to the skills needed to pursue a demanding technical career.</p>
<p>“Georgia’s technology industry is growing rapidly and offers exciting job opportunities for Georgians,” said Kemp. “This collaboration with AWS will give citizens access to innovative training and education to prepare for technical jobs in Georgia.”</p>
<p>The state is working with the AWS Academy program to provide educational institutions with a free, out-of-the-box cloud computing curriculum that prepares students for industry-recognized AWS certifications and high-demand cloud jobs.</p>
<p>Students can also access self-paced online training courses and labs from AWS.</p>
<p>“The use of cloud-based technology is growing rapidly in Georgia, which means there is a growing demand for a skilled workforce in this area,” said TCSG Commissioner Greg Dozier. .. “We are pleased to begin this partnership to provide students and existing information technology workers with the latest training available to ensure success in this growing area.”</p>

<p>The old saying, “Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink,” is so apt. When you are in the middle of an ocean surrounded by water all around but because of the salinity of the water, you are unable to drink it. The same can be extended to the amount of data available today. I draw a corollary from this saying and modify it in the context of the data — “Data data everywhere, not a place to store.”</p>
<p>With the percolation of internet in the lives of all and the rapid digitisation across the world, it has practically become impossible to have a tape storage, magnetic storage or any mode of storage to be sufficient enough to cater to the needs of data storage and further its processing. Gone are the days when you were required to have the data with you for you to use it. Today is the era of cloud storage and data availability is “on-the-go.”</p>
<p><strong>What is cloud computing?</strong></p>
<p>Cloud computing is the usage of different services on the internet for performing operations such as storing, managing and processing data on a common storage that can be accessed from anywhere rather than one particular system. Instead of being stored directly on your own personal device, cloud-based data is stored on servers owned by companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google and is made accessible to you via the internet. Whether you are accessing your Gmail or streaming your movies through Netflix or listening to your favourite songs on Spotify, you are a customer of a cloud services provider.</p>
<p>This data owned by the user is stored physically on a server of the service provider and is maintained by the third party and can be accessed by a person having the security credentials. This is a disadvantage. However, by proper security and passwords, the data can be given some security.</p>
<p>It is not essential that only the known names own these cloud infrastructures. Cloud computing may be public, private and hybrid depending on the user’s needs. A private cloud refers to a cloud entirely owned by an organisation and all the computing resources are exclusively used by the employees and customers of the organisation, usually over the internet or over their own private networks. In contrast, Public clouds are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service providers and Hybrid clouds combine public and private clouds by technology that allows data and applications to be shared between them.</p>
<p>The type of Cloud services may be SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). PaaS is designed to make it easier for developers to quickly create web or mobile apps, without worrying about setting up or managing the underlying infrastructure of servers, storage, network and databases needed for development. Software as a service is a method for delivering software applications over the Internet, on demand and typically on a subscription basis.</p>
<p>With SaaS, cloud providers host and manage the software application and underlying infrastructure and handle any maintenance, such as software upgrades and security patching. Users connect to the application over the Internet, usually with a web browser on their phone, tablet or PC. The most basic cloud computing service is IaaS wherein you rent IT infrastructure such as servers and virtual machines (VMs), storage, networks, and operating systems from a cloud provider on a pay-as-you-go basis. The most popular IaaS is Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).</p>
<p><strong>Is cloud computing truly a future technology?</strong></p>
<p>Cloud computing provides a cost-efficient way of storing data by eliminating the capital expenses of buying hardware and software and setting up, running and maintaining on-site data centres. It also enables delivering the right amount of computing power, storage and bandwidth that too as per the requirements of the user. The access to data is on-the-go and you as a user are literally carrying your data wherever you go thus making the data availability more robust and lesser prone to device crashes.</p>
<p>One of the key characteristics of cloud computing is that the reliability factor is extremely high as the data is generally mirrored at multiple redundant sites on the cloud provider’s network instead of concentrating at a single location.</p>
<p>With businesses going online and more organisations moving to cloud platforms, it’s important to guarantee that cloud service providers can make a secure framework to ensure the wellbeing of their customer’s information. When storing data in cloud, it is stored in not just one data server but on multiple servers of the network. This reduces the chances of data getting lost. If it’s not available on one data server there is always a chance that it will be present in another server. When data is stored together, the cost for its security and maintenance is low, otherwise its very expensive to guard and protect the data from hazards. It eliminates the down time as it takes care of patching.</p>

<p>Cloud computing is a specialised field of study today which finds its mention in courses ranging from computer science and engineering to civil engineering and physics to chemistry. <p>THE PANDEMIC HAS compelled enterprises to rapidly move their critical workload to the cloud to ensure seamless functioning of business. As cloud is gaining momentum, and enterprises are frantically looking for ways to optimise their network, storage and agility, edge computing has turned out to be the perfect solution.</p>
<p>To understand where edge computing fits in the whole spectrum of IT infrastructure, we need to begin with the basics— Understanding what actually is edge computing. “Edge computing” is a type of distributed architecture in which data processing occurs close to the source of data, that is, at the “edge” of the system. This approach reduces the need to bounce data back and forth between the cloud and device while maintaining consistent performance. This reduces latency in data transmission and computation, thereby enhancing agility.</p>
<p>With regards to infrastructure, edge computing is a network of local micro data centers for storage and processing purposes. At the same time, the central data centre oversees the proceedings and gets valuable insights into the local data processing. However, we need to be mindful that edge computing is a kind of expansion of cloud computing architecture— an optimised solution for decentralised infrastructure.</p>
<p>The ultimate purpose of edge computing is to bring compute, storage, and network services closer to endpoints and end users to improve overall application performance. Based on this knowledge, IT architects must identify and document instances where edge computing can address existing network performance problems.</p>
<p>How does edge computing work?<br />
In traditional enterprise computing, data is produced at a user’s computer. That data is moved across a WAN such as the internet, through the corporate LAN, where the data is stored and worked upon by an enterprise application. Results of that work are then conveyed back to the end-user. However, if we consider the number of devices that are connected to a company’s server, also the volume of data it generates, it is far too much for a traditional IT infrastructure to accommodate.<br />
So, IT architects have shifted focus from the central data centre to the logical edge of the infrastructure—taking storage and computing resources from the data centre and moving those resources to the point where the data is generated.</p>
<p>There are several reasons for the growing adoption of edge computing:</p>
<p>Due to emerging technologies such as IoT and IoB, data is being generated in real-time. Devices enabled by these technologies require a high response time and considerable bandwidth for proper operation.<br />
Cloud computing is centralised. Transmitting and processing massive quantities of raw data puts a significant load on the network’s bandwidth.<br />
Incessant movement of large quantities of data back and forth is beyond reasonable cost-effectiveness and leads to latency.<br />
Processing data at the source and then sending valuable data to the centre is a more efficient solution.<br />
As organisations move back to remote working models, we will witness wider adoption of edge computing as it empowers remote work infrastructure with greater computation and storage capabilities.</p>

<p>Complex hypervisor software helps run cloud computers, but verifying its security is often thought to be nigh impossible. Now computer scientists at Columbia University have developed what they say is the first hypervisor that can guarantee secure cloud computing.</p>
<p>Hypervisors organize cloud servers into virtual machines to supply data and computing power over the Internet. Hacks that successfully exploit hypervisor vulnerabilities could gain unfettered access to the data of millions of customers of cloud computing providers such as Amazon.</p>
<p>&#8220;All it takes is a single weak link in the code — one that is virtually impossible to detect via traditional testing — to leave a system vulnerable to hackers,&#8221; says Ronghui Gu, a computer scientist at Columbia University&#8217;s School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-author on the researchers’ published study about the work.</p>
<p>In theory, scientists can formally verify software to mathematically prove that its code &#8220;protects data security under 100% of circumstances,&#8221; Gu says. However, most verified hypervisors are often far simpler than their commercial counterparts, since they are specifically designed for verification instead of practical applications. In contrast, modern commercial hypervisors are huge pieces of software, often including an entire operating system kernel, which can make verifying them a seemingly insurmountable task.</p>
<p>For example, it took three person-years to verify 6,500 lines of code with the CertiKOS hypervisor and 10 person-years to verify 9,000 lines of code with the seL4 hypervisor, both of which were designed for verification. In comparison, the widely used KVM open-source hypervisor, a full-featured multi-processor system integrated with Linux, has more than 2 million lines of code.</p>
<p>Now the Columbia computer scientists have developed a way to verify commercial-grade hypervisors. They used their new technique to develop a secure version of KVM named SeKVM, which they suggest is the first machine-checked formally verified commercial-grade hypervisor.</p>
<p>The researchers dubbed their new technique microverification, which reduces the amount of work needed to verify a hypervisor. It breaks down a hypervisor into a small core and a set of untrusted services, and then goes on to prove the hypervisor secure by verifying the core alone. The core has no vulnerabilities for a hack to exploit, and this core mediates all the hypervisor&#8217;s interactions with virtual machines, so even if a hack undermines one virtual machine, it does not compromise the others.</p>
<p>Based on microverification, the scientists developed software named MicroV to verify large commercial-grade multi-processor hypervisors. With the help of MicroV, they developed a secure core for SeKVM only 3,800 lines of code long, which they verified over the course of two person-years.</p>
<p>When it comes to real application workloads, SeKVM performed similarly to unmodified KVM, at most incurring less than 10% performance overhead on native hardware KVM was specifically designed to run on. At the same time, SeKVM supported KVM&#8217;s wide range of features.</p>
<p>&#8220;SeKVM is just KVM with some minor changes,&#8221; says study co-author Jason Nieh, a computer scientist at Columbia University&#8217;s School of Engineering and Applied Science. &#8220;It performs like regular KVM, inherits the functionality of regular KVM, but on top of that, provides security guarantees that regular KVM does not have.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the future, &#8220;we will keep exploring this concept of cyber-resilient systems software and build safeguards in various domains, from banking systems and Internet of Things devices to autonomous vehicles and cryptocurrencies,&#8221; Gu says. &#8220;SeKVM will lay a foundation for future innovations in systems verification and lead to a new generation of cyber-resilient systems software. In a world where cybersecurity is a growing concern, this resiliency is in high demand.&#8221;</p>

<p>Funded by the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Information Technology, DataMount Company, and International Emerging Technology Company (ETCO) have signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese Alibaba Group on cloud computing services.<br />
The signing of the agreement, which was held at COMEX 2021, stipulates that the Data Mount and ETCO will manage, operate and market Alibaba center and services for cloud computing in the region, which will enhance the Sultanate’s position as a regional gateway for cloud computing services and technologies.</p>
<p>The agreement will also stipulate that the three parties provide data processing and cloud hosting services and train national cadres to use Alibaba&#8217;s cloud programs.</p>
<p>The aim is to enhance the cloud computing market in the Sultanate and in the region in general.</p>
<p>Under the agreement; Alibaba will invest about $10 million during the first stages of providing central devices and modern technologies, while DataMount will invest nearly $4 million in preparing the infrastructure for the information center; The project is expected to provide the technology sector in the Sultanate with a number of job opportunities (direct and indirect);</p>
<p>Datamount has started training and employing a number of graduates, and it is expected that the number of employees during the first phase will reach 12 employees to work on managing and marketing the project.</p>

The addition of the new IDCs places Tencent Cloud&#8217;s operation in 27 regions and 66 availability zones worldwide, ushering in the opening of the second availability zones (AZ2) in Bangkok, Frankfurt and Tokyo and the third (AZ3) in Hong Kong in order to addressing the ever-growing business needs around the world.</p>

But using disparate services and solutions—such as multi-cloud, hybrid environments, software as a service (SaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS), plus various applications and endpoints—introduces implementation, management and security challenges to the cloud computing landscape. And because of the proliferation of multi-cloud, many enterprises maintain heterogeneous cloud environments, with tools and systems from various platforms differing significantly. <p>Discussions about the relationship between cloud computing and edge computing have a tendency to present the cloud and edge as opposite types of architectures and to treat them as an either/or proposition.</p>
<p>This isn’t the best way to think about cloud and edge. Although there are key differences between cloud and edge computing, the cloud and the edge don’t compete with each other as much as they complement each other.</p>
<p>Differences between cloud and edge<br />
The differences between cloud computing and edge computing boil down largely to where workloads are hosted.</p>
<p>In a conventional cloud, data and applications are housed in large data centers located within a public cloud vendor’s network.</p>
<p>In an edge architecture, workloads are hosted in a location that is “closer” — from the perspective of the network — to end-users than is a traditional data center.</p>
<p>Multiple approaches to edge computing<br />
It’s worth noting that the definition of edge can get a little messy because there are many possible ways to build an edge architecture. Sometimes, an edge environment runs directly on end-user devices. In others, it looks more like a traditional data center populated by conventional servers, which happen to be closer to end-users than traditional cloud data centers.</p>
<p>Cloud computing tends to be more straightforward from an architectural perspective. Although there can be some variation in which cloud regions and zones teams use to host workloads, all public cloud environments rely on conventional data centers that are comparatively distant — again, in networking terms — from end-users.</p>
<p>Why cloud and edge computing go together<br />
Although cloud and edge computing are fundamentally different types of architectures, “cloud vs. edge” is not necessarily the best way to think about them.</p>
<p>In many cases, it makes sense to use both cloud and edge at the same time. Cloud data centers can host workloads that don’t require the minimal latency and high reliability of those hosted on the edge, while edge infrastructure handles those that do.</p>
<p>By pairing cloud and edge together, organizations can leverage the scalability and ease of deployment of cloud environments while still achieving high-performance goals that cloud data centers can’t always support due to network latency issues.</p>
<p>This isn’t to say that you always have to use cloud and edge at the same time. It’s entirely possible to host applications or data in the cloud without also running an edge environment. It’s also possible — although less common — to use edge without using a public cloud.</p>
<p>Cloud and edge supercharge performance<br />
But in general, using cloud computing and edge computing at the same time can lead to the best overall outcome from a performance perspective. The only big downside is that it can be harder to manage a cloud environment and an edge environment at the same time, although platforms like Kubernetes simplify this by making it easy to deploy applications to both types of environments from a central management plane.</p>

<p>Beijing: Alibaba’s cloud computing unit is making its Apsara operating system compatible with processors based on Arm, x86, RISC-V, among other architectures, the company has said.</p>
<p>Alibaba Cloud is one of the fastest-growing businesses for the Chinese e-commerce giant and the world’s fourth-largest public cloud service in the second half of 2020, according to market research firm IDC.</p>
<p>“The IT ecosystem was traditionally defined by chips, but cloud computing fundamentally changed that,” Zhang Jianfeng, president of Alibaba Cloud’s Intelligence group, said at the conference on Friday.</p>
<p>A cloud operating system can standardise the computing power of server chips, special-purpose chips and other hardware, so whether the chip is based on x86, Arm, RISC-V or a hardware accelerator, the cloud computing offerings for customers are standardized and of high-quality,” Jianfeng added.</p>
<p>The global chip market has mostly been dominated by Intel’s x86 in personal computing and Arm for mobile devices.</p>
<p>But RISC-V, an open-source chip architecture competitive with Arma’s technologies, is gaining popularity around the world, especially with Chinese developers.</p>
<p>Started by academics at the University of California, Berkeley, RISC-V is open to all to use without licensing or patent fees and is generally not subject to America’s export controls.</p>
<p>The Trump Administration’s bans on Huawei and its rival ZTE over national security concerns have effectively severed ties between the Chinese telecom titans and American tech companies, including major semiconductor suppliers.</p>
<p>Arm was forced to decide its relationships with Huawei and said it could continue licensing to the Chinese firm as it’s of UK origin, the report said.</p>
<p>But Huawei still struggles to find fabs that are both capable and allowed to manufacture the chips designed using the architecture, it added.</p>
<p>The US sanctions led to a burst in activity around RISC-V in China’s tech industry as developers prepare for future tech restrictions by the US, with Alibaba at the forefront of the movement.</p>
<p>Alibaba Cloud, Huawei and ZTE are among the 13 premier members of RISC-V International, which means they get a seat on its Board of Directors and Technical Steering Community.</p>
