Source:-https://www.smartindustry.com/

OnPoint Digital Solutions, a subsidiary of Koch Engineered Solutions LLC (KES), announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) to co-develop an intelligent process optimization platform (IPOP). The platform—designed to enable OnPoint’s solutions—will utilize cloud and edge digital infrastructure to provide advanced machine-learning and industrial-computing capabilities for OnPoint’s connected ecosystem, enabling industrial operators and their preferred partners to integrate and act upon the best available knowledge anywhere, any time, at scale, per the partners.

This collaboration between OnPoint and AWS will leverage and complement AWS’s generally available infrastructure services, IoT, advanced analytics and machine learning. Together, the co-developed technology will help connect industrial companies with the solutions they need to optimize their operations in a variety of industrial verticals from oil and gas to food and beverage, electronics, smart grid, paper manufacturing, steel production and more, they note.

“The Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us, and in the same way that we are teaming up with AWS to co-develop this software platform, we believe the platform will enrich our partnerships with KES customers through the digital application of our world-class capabilities,” said Dave Dotson, president of KES. “This collaboration with AWS seeks to transform the way KES partners with industrial operations, removing barriers and leveraging technology that connects operators directly with subject matter expertise to get more value from their data and make better, more efficient decisions in real-time. We’re working with a sense of greater purpose toward improved connected solutions across industries that will create value for our customers and society.”

The IPOP solution promises to provide “state of the asset” information to equipment manufacturers to enable them to be proactive in both decisions and customer support. Leveraging first principle physics models combined with machine learning technology, solutions built on IPOP will be designed to provide better insights and recommendations to plant operator customers, to proactively optimize industrial processes and provide predictive maintenance, quality, and yield analyses.

“From engineering to manufacturing, Koch brings invaluable knowledge and full lifecycle capabilities in asset design, implementation, operations, and maintenance,” said Sarah Cooper, GM of outcome driven engineering at AWS. “At the heart of our industrial processing customers’ operations are the physics-based first principle models that largely haven’t changed for the past two decades. The IPOP collaboration with KES brings new emerging digital services to help accelerate process innovation and improve resource efficiency and product quality.”

Source:-https://www.pymnts.com/ We’re seeing a shift in financial services that will have a lingering — and, in some ways, permanent — […]

Source:-https://www.pymnts.com/

We’re seeing a shift in financial services that will have a lingering — and, in some ways, permanent — impact on payments, hastened by the continued migration of financial institutions (FIs) and merchants to the cloud.

In an interview with PYMNTS, Mark Smith, head of payments for financial services at Amazon Web Services (AWS), said that “COVID has changed the conversation we’ve been having with payment customers, and it’s accelerated the trends we’ve been seeing over the past few years.”

Much of that changing conversation has to do with a pivot in consumer behavior, he said, which has spurred AWS’ own customers to migrate to cloud applications. “We all recognize that payments transactions are ‘bursty,’” Smith told PYMNTS. “We see a lot of this during the holidays and with seasonal shifts. But we weren’t ready for this kind of panic-buying, all done online.” One reason is to enhance card processing, as firms on the merchant processing side — which are focused on eCommerce — need to scale up and down as necessary based on those aforementioned shifts in consumer behavior, and as more transactions move online.

AWS, in another tailwind accelerating enterprises to the cloud, has encountered concerns from clients about preventing fraudsters from capitalizing on volume trends toward card-not-present transactions, he said.

Transforming Credit Decisioning

The cloud is also helping to transform credit decisioning amid some of the financial hardships wrought by the pandemic. Many of the ways that AWS customers are using data to lend and to make credit decisions must adapt to the fact that pandemic-related financial hardships might not be a clear indicator of future creditworthiness.

Smith pointed to the trend that he believes could prove to be the stickiest: emerging payments. Many of AWS’ customers had been focused on moving to contactless or taking advantage of faster payments even before COVID-19. “When we come out of the pandemic, many of the initiatives are going to stick around,” he predicted. Smith mentioned that customers like Venmo, a rapidly growing peer-to-peer (P2P) payments app with over 60 million active users, as well as touch-free payment options including quick-response code (QRC) solutions, tap-to-pay or in-app purchases.

Against that backdrop, financial institutions (FIs) are tightening their focus to improve how they engage with their end customers — reaching toward creating frictionless payment experiences with, for instance, QR codes or voice commerce, sidestepping the physical handovers of cards or cash. And AWS’ corporate clients are increasingly interested in newer, alternative payment methods such as central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), but must tackle the challenges of legacy infrastructure.

“Even for customers like FinTechs that have been around for only 10 or so years — and maybe aren’t dependent on the mainframe — we’ve been working with them to break down the ‘monolith’ into microservices using experts with domain expertise,” Smith said. Data, of course, fuels the cloud — and, as Smith noted, payments contain a wealth of data, both real-time and historical.

In payments, he said, there have been two focal points for data analytics. One, as mentioned above, is around fraud prevention, and the other is tied to credit. From a fraud prevention standpoint, NuData Security (part of Mastercard) enhances authentication by analyzing users’ digital profiles with passive biometrics. As a user interacts with the system, hundreds of anonymized data points are analyzed in real time — from typographic rates to patterns in technology use — to detect anomalous activity before a fraudulent transaction occurs.

Firms have been building data lakes and using machine learning to make rapid decisions and open up new pools of customers (particularly among unbanked/underbanked and thin-credit or no-credit-file customers). A good example of this is the San Francisco-based, born-in-the-cloud FinTech Affirm, which delivers consumer financing in the form of installment loans through thousands of retailers. Using machine learning from AWS, Affirm is able to make loan underwriting decisions in seconds, not days. Smith continues, “At Affirm, better credit decisioning has increased merchant orders by 85 percent and repeat orders by 20 percent.”

Corporates will thrive, post-pandemic, with modern data analytics — and, in a way, automation is a form of liberty, since shifting manual tasks to automation enables organizations to offload undifferentiated heavy lifting to AWS and focus on their core business and customers.

“This is an unprecedented shift in behavior, and financial institutions and payment customers realize they need to step back and say, ‘how do we more nimbly and easily adapt to changing customer behaviors and expectations?’” Smith told PYMNTS.

Source:-https://en.globes.co.il/ Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services, a unit of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) announced on Friday that it would open […]

Source:-https://en.globes.co.il/

Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services, a unit of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) announced on Friday that it would open an infrastructure region in Israel in the first half of 2023. The company recently won the Israeli government’s “Nimbus” computing tender along with Google Cloud. The two companies were selected by the Ministry of Finance and the Government Computer Authority as providers of cloud services to the government of Israel and the IDF for the next seven years, in a tender estimated to be worth some NIS 4 billion.

After losing in the tender, software giant Microsoft, with its Azure cloud computing service, and computer technology company Oracle, filed administrative petitions with the aim of leaving an opening for a future legal appeal against the results of the tender, but no direct legal proceedings are taking place to annual the outcome. Microsoft and Oracle stress the fact that they are continuing their efforts to set up datacenters in Israel.

Oracle announced that it would open its cloud center located in the Jerusalem area this summer. Microsoft, which announced in early 2020 that it would open its datacenter in 2021, later announced that it would open only in the first half of 2022. Google, which has also officially announced that it will set up a regional cloud datacenter, has not stated when it will start to operate.

Amazon’s regional cloud, like the others, is not intended for government use only, but for the entire Israeli economy. In its announcement on Friday the company stated: “The AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will enable even more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and non-profits to run their applications and serve end-users from data centers located in Israel. Additionally, the government of Israel announced that it has selected AWS as its primary cloud provider as part of the “Nimbus” contract for government ministries and subsidiaries. The Nimbus framework will provide cloud services to Israeli government ministries including local municipalities, government-owned companies, and public sector organizations with the aim of helping to accelerate digital transformation. It will be instrumental in driving innovation and enabling new digital services for the citizens of Israel.”

In August 2020, it was announced that AWS was working on setting up datacenters at three sites in Israel, each with an output of 16 megawatts. AWS began to advance the project together with Azrieli Group Ltd. (TASE: AZRG) and US company Compass. The sites, according to the report, are at Bet Shemesh, Shoham, and in Hefer Valley. The real estate deals involved were estimated at NIS 300-400m, and the project as a whole at about NIS 1 billion.

Accountant General Yali Rothenberg said, “”We congratulate AWS on their winning bid in the first tender of Project Nimbus, a multi-year flagship project led by the Israeli Government Procurement Administration to provide a comprehensive framework for the provision of cloud services to the Government of Israel”

“The new AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will empower more public and private institutions, innovative startups, and global companies to deliver built-for-the-cloud applications that help fuel economic development across the country.

“It is the latest in our list of AWS Regions across Europe and the Middle East, which includes existing regions in Bahrain, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, and the UK as well as regions under development in Spain, Switzerland, and United Arab Emirates,” said Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure, AWS.

“The new region is a continuation of our investment to support enterprises of all kinds, help startups scale and grow, enable technical skills development, and create cloud literacy,” DeSantis continued. “Cloud technology is at the heart of the Israeli government’s digital transformation program, and their approach highlights the importance of setting a strong course for cloud adoption and leading by example to re-invent citizen services.”

AWS, considered the world’s leading cloud services provider, set out in its announcement how its global datacenter network is structured, and its advantages for users. “AWS Regions are comprised of Availability Zones, which place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting customers’ business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that leverage multiple Availability Zones. Globally, AWS has 81 Availability Zones across 25 geographic regions, with plans to launch an additional 21 Availability Zones and seven AWS Regions in Australia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates.

“Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and is connected through redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones and across multiple regions to achieve even greater fault tolerance.

“The addition of the AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) Region will enable local customers with data residency requirements to store their data in Israel with the assurance that they retain control over the location of their data. Organizations using this region will also be able to access advanced technologies from the world’s leading cloud with the broadest and deepest suite of cloud services to drive innovation including analytics, compute, database, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, mobile services, storage, and more.”

Like other cloud companies, AWS provided a list of some of its most prominent customers, among the Bank Leumi, Migdal, CyberArk, Fiverr, monday.com, Hashavshevet (Wizsoft), the Rami Levy group, and the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv (Ichilov Hospital).

AWS has a Partner Network (APN) Partners consisting of tens of thousands of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Systems Integrators (SIs) around the world. AWS Partners build innovative solutions and services on AWS, and the APN helps by providing business, technical, marketing, and go-to-market support. APN SIs, consulting partners, and ISVs working in Israel help enterprise and public sector customers migrate to AWS, deploy mission-critical applications, and provide a full range of monitoring, automation, and management services for customers’ environments on AWS.

According to the company’s announcement, among AWS Israel Partners are Alcide, AllCloud, AppsFlyer, Automat-IT, BigPanda, Bringg, Checkmarx, CloudBuzz, Matrix CloudZone, Comm-IT, Continuity Software, CloudRide, DoIT International, Guardicore, Kaltura, MidLink, Namogoo, Nice, Orca Security, Perimeter81, Quali, Radware, Sapiens, TeraSky, and Trax Retail.

The collaboration with AllCloud, for example, was reported in December 2020, and includes investment of some $30 million in transferring Israeli companies to AWS cloud services.

The regional cloud represents a continuation of AWS’s activity in Israel, which includes Amazon CloudFront edge locations. Amazon CloudFront is described as “a highly secure and programmable Content Delivery Network (CDN) that accelerates the delivery of data, videos, applications, and APIs to users worldwide with low latency and high transfer speeds.”

In 2020, AWS also launched AWS Outposts and AWS Direct Connect in Israel. AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that offers the same AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any data center, co-location space, or on-premises facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Direct Connect makes it easy to establish a dedicated network connection from customers’ on-premises infrastructure to AWS infrastructure. Using AWS Direct Connect, customers can establish private connectivity between AWS and their data center, office, or colocation environment, which can reduce their network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than internet-based connections.”

The company also mentioned its AWS Activate program for cooperation with startups in Israel, which has been in operation since 2013. “This program gives startups access to guidance and one-on-one time with AWS experts as well as web-based training, self-paced labs, customer support, third-party offers, and up to $100,000 in AWS service credits – all at no charge. This is in addition to the work that AWS already does with the venture capital community, startup accelerators, and incubators to help startups grow in the cloud. In Israel, AWS works with accelerator organizations such as 8200 EISP, F2 Venture Capital – the junction, and TechStars as well as venture capital firms like Aleph, Pitango, TLV Partners, and Viola Ventures to support the rapid growth of their portfolio companies,” the AWS announcement said.

Source:-https://www.scmagazine.com/

Researchers reported Friday that TeamTNT is using compromised AWS credentials to attack AWS cloud environments via the cloud platform’s application programming interface. The threat actors are now also targeting the credentials of 16 additional applications, including the AWS apps as well as Google Cloud credentials.

The researchers said the threat actors can now identify all identity and access management (IAM) permissions, elastic computer cloud instances, S3 buckets, CloudTrail configurations, and CloudFormation operations granted to the compromised AWS credentials.

This attack was significant because in hitting Google Cloud it represents the first time attackers have targeted IAM credentials on compromised cloud instances outside of AWS. Although it’s still possible that TeamTNT could target the IAM credentials of Microsoft Azure, Alibaba Cloud, Oracle Cloud, or IBM Cloud using similar methods, Unit 42 researchers have yet to find evidence that there has been an attack on the other cloud providers. TeamTNT first started collecting AWS credentials on cloud instances they had compromised as early as August 2020.

In a blog post, Palo Alto’s Unit 42 researchers said these latest discoveries followed the threat group having targeted Kubernetes clusters and creating a new malware called Black-T that integrates open source cloud-native tools to advance its cryptojacking operations.

Yaniv Bar-Dayan, co-founder and CEO at Vulcan Cyber said any enterprise using cloud services needs to understand that offloading compute and storage infrastructure to a cloud provider doesn’t mean offloading cloud security. Companies still need to apply a comprehensive vulnerability management and mitigation plan to all cyber resources utilized by a company, including cloud apps.

“Cloud vulnerabilities are not the same as application vulnerabilities and both require different remediation and mitigation actions to protect from organizations like TeamTNT,” Bar-Dayan said. “We agree with Unit 42 researchers and reiterate the immediate need to protect cloud infrastructure using the appropriate remediation steps common to cloud environments such as configuration changes, compensating controls, and workarounds.”

TeamTNT starts by infiltrating a public cloud environment – with AWS by far the most prevalent target, though Google Cloud was hit this time around – and builds a map of the environment which includes scraped credentials, workloads, and storage, said Oliver Tavakoli, CTO at Vectra.

“All this represents the equivalent of establishing a base camp prior to climbing a high summit,” Tavakoli said. “Then the insertion of cryptomining software begins with TeamTNT counting on the fact that target organizations won’t notice the uptick in usage charges for a while.”

Source:-https://securityboulevard.com/ Sumo Logic this week announced it is making a security information event management (SIEM) platform available on the Amazon […]

Source:-https://securityboulevard.com/

Sumo Logic this week announced it is making a security information event management (SIEM) platform available on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud.

Jabari Norton, vice president of partners and alliances for Sumo Logic, said the Sumo Logic Cloud SIEM Powered by AWS extends the reach of the Sumo Logic Continuous Intelligence Platform for analyzing data into the realm of cybersecurity.

The Sumo Logic Continuous Intelligence Platform is already hosted on AWS. The challenge the company faced was extending the reach of that platform to create a SIEM that can collect data from multiple third-party data sources spanning everything from on-premises IT environments to software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, said Norton. Those capabilities make it possible to now analyze security data using machine learning algorithms to detect threats and correlate security intelligence, noted Norton.

The Sumo Logic Cloud SIEM is also tightly integrated with AWS security services such as Amazon GuardDuty and AWS CloudTrail in addition to all the cloud services that AWS continuously updates, added Norton. While the relationship with AWS is not exclusive, Norton said Sumo Logic has no plans to host of a version of its SIEM on any other public cloud at this time.

In effect, Sumo Logic is now applying the same observability capabilities it provides to IT operations and DevOps teams to analyzing security data. In theory, that approach should make it easier for all those teams to collaborate around a platform that aggregates data from across the extended enterprise. That’s critical because while security teams are mainly tasked with discovering vulnerabilities they typically need to rely on DevOps and IT operations teams to remediate them.

In the meantime, the rate at which security platforms are shifting to the cloud continues to accelerate in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Security teams that now need to work from anywhere are finding it simpler and more cost effective to employ cloud platforms to analyze security data. In many cases, the rise of cybersecurity AI will soon force the cloud migration issue. Few organizations have the infrastructure resources required to aggregate the volume of data that is required to train an AI model. The need for those AI models is becoming increasingly pressing because the rate at which cybersecurity attacks are being launched is increasing beyond the abilities of any cybersecurity team, on their own, to analyze.

Of course, there is no shortage of SIEM platforms available in the cloud. Sumo Logic is betting many organizations will simply extend their existing subscriptions to now include a SIEM service.

It may still be some time before the bulk of security platforms employed by any organization reside in the cloud. However, at this juncture, it’s now more a question of time. The less time understaffed cybersecurity teams spend managing infrastructure themselves, the more time they should have available to uncover threats. The issue, of course, is finding the time and resources to make transition in the middle of what is now often a daily cybersecurity firefight.

Source:-https://www.fiercetelecom.com/ Bell Canada will incorporate Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Wavelength into its 5G network edge, making it the first Canadian […]

Source:-https://www.fiercetelecom.com/

Bell Canada will incorporate Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Wavelength into its 5G network edge, making it the first Canadian operator to use Wavelength, which is Amazon’s cloud platform that’s designed specifically for edge computing. The Canadian service provider also said AWS is its preferred public cloud provider.

Bell’s alliance with AWS is similar to Verizon’s AWS partnership. Verizon made AWS its preferred cloud provider for business applications and then a year later announced it was using AWS Wavelength for its 5G edge network.

AWS Wavelength zones are sites where AWS compute and storage services are embedded within a telecom company’s data centers at the edge of the 5G network. These zones allow data traffic to reach application servers within the zones without leaving the mobile provider’s network. This means that the distance that the application data has to travel is shortened, which improves performance. And because the traffic avoids taking multiple hops between different sites across the internet, like most wireless traffic must travel, it is faster and more secure.

Bell didn’t reveal where it was planning to deploy AWS Wavelength Zones, nor how many it will have. Verizon has 10 AWS Wavelength Zones in cities across the U.S. and KDDI, which also is using AWS Wavelength, has two zones in Japan.

Bell said that it will work with AWS to modernize its applications and services and use AWS advanced capabilities like machine learning and analytics. In addition, it noted that one of the big benefits of AWS Wavelength is that it will open Bell’s network to AWS developers that want to create low-latency applications for services such as immersive gaming, ultra-high-definition video streaming, self-driving cars, and smart manufacturing that will run on the company’s 5G distributed network.

Bell launched 5G a year ago and now its service is available to approximately 35% of Canada’s population. The company said it is on track to cover up to 70% of Canada’s population by year-end.

Bell is pouring a lot of money into its network. The company just increased its capital investment plan from $1.2 billion to $1.7 billion and will use that funding to accelerate its 5G footprint and expand its fiber footprint.

Source:-https://www.fiercewireless.com/ Spirent has partnered with Amazon Web Services to allow service providers building 5G networks on AWS to leverage automated […]

Source:-https://www.fiercewireless.com/

Spirent has partnered with Amazon Web Services to allow service providers building 5G networks on AWS to leverage automated 5G testing capabilities that can reduce their operational costs and time-to-market.

The partnership gives those carriers access to Spirent’s vendor-neutral Landslide 5GC Automation Package in combination with AWS’s Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline to help them validate mobile network functions and services for performance, capacity, compliance and other requirements. Parallel tests also can be supported.

Manually setting up all these types of tests could prove to be too time-consuming and complex for some service provider organizations, forcing them into months-long testing and validation programs, Spirent said. By using Landslide on AWS, the operators just need to trigger the tests and complete validation.

Anil Kollipara, senior director, product management at Spirent, told Fierce Wireless via email that Spirent also provides the same testing capabilities through a number of other cloud providers and virtual machine and container platforms.

“Any business providing 5G capabilities (VNFs, CNFs, NFVI, Services, etc.) to CSPs needs to have test automation built into their offering,” he said. “As such, AWS is one such avenue where we see CSPs consuming our test automation software. In other cases, this could be the VNF vendors or even the system integrators.”

This week’s news comes just days after Telefonica validated AWS as an option for 5G SA core deployment in Brazil, a project which included Spirent as the provider of testing for the end-to-end system. AWS in recent months has been working more closely with other operators, such as Verizon, on 5G efforts as well.

Source:-https://developingtelecoms.com/

Brazilian mobile market leader Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) performed tests with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the native operation of the core of a 5G standalone (5G SA) network in the cloud, and the results were validated for the performance parameters of a 5G SA network.

According to a report in Teletime, the use of a cloud core is a viable option for the evolution of mobile networks even in the face of the need for immediate evolution to standalone networks (which in Brazil has become an obligation of the 5G notice).

The provision of SA 5G functionality has also been identified as a priority by Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel).

The tests were carried out in Brazil, but are valid for the other operations of the Telefónica group. Technologies from different network function providers were used in the proof of concept with AWS: Nokia, Oracle, and Mavenir.

Spirent Communications helped validate the end-to-end system, using its core network testing product to verify control plane functionality and high-load testing for user plane performance running in AWS South America Region and on AWS Outputs.

The tests showed that Telefónica’s Vivo can build its 5G core on AWS going forward, as one of the latest operators looking at cloud infrastructure for standalone 5G.

“Thanks to this project, Telefonica has reached a clear milestone in its 5G plans in Brazil and also for its deployment strategy in the group, where cloud-native 5G platforms allow a wide range of private and public infrastructure options,” said Telefonica Cayetano Carbajo, Director of Core, Service Platforms and Transportin Telefonica CTIO.

Source:-https://www.airforcetimes.com/ WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Defense will continue to defend its contentious Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud contract […]

Source:-https://www.airforcetimes.com/

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Defense will continue to defend its contentious Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud contract in court after signaling earlier this year that the program’s future was uncertain, according to court documents filed Friday.

The Pentagon’s decision to continue defending the JEDI contract is unexpected after the department stated in January it would reassess the program if the court decided to hear Amazon Web Services’ allegations of political interference by President Donald Trump. In late April the U.S. Court of Federal Claims declined to toss out those allegations.

Documents filed Friday afternoon indicate that at least several more months of litigation are expected in the lawsuit, which AWS filed after it lost the contract to Microsoft in October 2019. Under one scenario posed by the department, the case would continue into at least October, two years after it originally awarded Microsoft the contract.

In a statement, a Pentagon spokesperson Russ Goemaere said the filing, called a Joint Status Report, was a “standard filing in any litigation.”

“The filing merely reflects the proposed schedule for further proceedings in the case, as directed by the Court’s April 28, 2021 Order,” Goemaere said. “Nothing about this procedural filing changes our previous statements regarding our commitment to establish an enterprise cloud capability for the Department — we hope through JEDI — but the DoD’s requirements transcend any one procurement.”

AWS’ lawyers proposed a slower timeline in an effort to collect more evidence of an alleged anti-Amazon bias in the award decision. AWS argued in the filings that the department is withholding Slack messages and emails that would affect the scope of the discovery process. The cloud giant states that it wants to “ensure the record is complete for a fair and full adjudication” of the case.

The DoD meanwhile argued for a faster timeline, stating that AWS’ proposal for a slower schedule does “ongoing harm to national security or continued delay in fielding these critical capabilities.”

“The passage of over 18 months since this bid protest was filed serves to increase the urgency of expeditious resolution now, not reduce it,” DoD lawyers wrote of AWS’ protest filed in December 2019.

The JEDI cloud, a contract worth up to $10 billion over a decade, has been the cornerstone of the department’s digital modernization strategy. Senior IT officials have stated for years that JEDI cloud would deliver the department the computing power to develop artificial intelligence tools broadly, as well as give war fighters access to mass amounts of data across different security classification levels on the battlefield.

AWS rebuts the DoD’s national security argument by citing numerous public statements from senior DoD officials detailing how the department worked with services and combatant commands to mitigate national security harm.

In response, DoD lawyers wrote “AWS’s attempt to leverage this noble calling for its own self-serving interests merely underscores the need for this Court to fully, fairly, and expeditiously adjudicate AWS’s allegations so that the DoD may field the tools necessary to achieve its critical mission.”

Despite Microsoft’s win in 2019, JEDI cloud implementation never started. In early 2020, the court ruled that AWS’ case had merit and placed a hold on Microsoft and Pentagon teams building JEDI, a major blow for a cloud platform that is supposed to host 80 percent of DoD systems. Last year, the department decided it would reconsider its award to Microsoft but later re-affirmed its choice.

In Friday’s filing, Microsoft backed the department’s effort to move forward with the JEDI cloud and called for a prompt decision.

“Despite the fact that it remains unclear when the case will be decided, Microsoft has continued to invest in the program, has remained ready to perform, and is incurring continuing costs, while losing anticipated revenue,” Microsoft’s lawyers wrote. “Microsoft objects to Amazon’s tactics aimed at prolonging the duration of this protest — despite the needs of our military and the significant national security interests at stake.”

Source:-https://www.lancashirebusinessview.co.uk/ Skills development and training experts Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start and IN4.0 Group are collaborating to build an inclusive […]

Source:-https://www.lancashirebusinessview.co.uk/

Skills development and training experts Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start and IN4.0 Group are collaborating to build an inclusive and diverse global pipeline of new cloud talent by focusing on unemployed and underemployed individuals to help them launch a career in the cloud.

Following the success of the IN4.0 talent academy, a 12-week specialist digital skills training programme, and its three-year partnership with AWS, IN4.0 is working with AWS re/Start on programmes in Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

IN4.0 delivered two successful AWS re/Start cohorts earlier this year with 63 learners graduating from the programme in March 2021. Applications are open for the next cohort, which is due to start on Tuesday 4 May.

The collaboration supports learners in building career skills and helping them through the interview process to pursue entry-level roles that require AWS Cloud practitioner knowledge and skills.

IN4.0, operators of HOST, the Home of Skills & Technology, formerly known as The Landing in Media City UK, is working with several employers in the North West region who are already benefitting from ‘work-ready’ graduates to help undertake industrial projects and drive digital transformation within their businesses.

IN4.0 aims to support learners in gaining job-specific skills, connect learners with potential hiring employers, and support them as they embark on cloud careers.

According to the 2019 Global Knowledge IT Skills and Salary Report, nearly 80 per cent of IT decision-makers see hiring as a challenge. While LinkedIn data shows that cloud computing skills have ranked among the top hard skills that companies need the most for the past three years.

AWS re/Start is a 12-week, skills-based training programme that covers fundamental AWS cloud skills as well as practical career skills, such as interviewing and CV writing, to help prepare individuals for an entry-level cloud position. Through real-world scenario-based exercises, labs, and coursework, students build Linux, Python, networking, security, and relational database skills.

The programme also prepares and covers the cost for participants to take the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam, validating their cloud skills with an industry-recognised credential. Ultimately, AWS re/Start can help prepare individuals for entry-level cloud roles in operations, site reliability and infrastructure support.

Mo Isap, CEO of IN4.0 Group said “After working closely with AWS for nearly three years within our talent academy, we are ecstatic to continue this partnership formally as an AWS re/Start collaborating organisation and AWS select consulting partner.

“Securing this prestigious status further extends IN4.0 Group’s commitment to delivering highly skilled technology career starts for individuals from diverse backgrounds, who previously would not have had this opportunity.”

Tejas Vashi, AWS re/Start Global Team Lead said: “The industry demand for cloud adoption is far outpacing the number of new, cloud-savvy workers, leaving organisations struggling to find and hire the talent needed to implement cloud services. To overcome this systematic supply vs demand situation, cloud talent must be cultivated from non-traditional sources. AWS re/Start brings “net-new” talent into the cloud ecosystem by skilling unemployed and underemployed individuals with little technology background and preparing them to launch a cloud career.”

Source:-https://mytechdecisions.com/ Verizon Business and Amazon Web Services said Monday they are expanding their 5G collaboration to bring private mobile edge […]

Source:-https://mytechdecisions.com/

Verizon Business and Amazon Web Services said Monday they are expanding their 5G collaboration to bring private mobile edge computing (MEC) to U.S. enterprise customers.

The solution will deliver a completely dedicated edge compute infrastructure on-premise that enables ultra-low latency, higher levels of security and deeper customization that fully integrates Verizon’s Private 5G networks and Private Edge platform with AWS Outposts, according to the announcement.

This allows Verizon enterprise customers to use the private MEC to deploy real-time enterprise applications like intelligent logistics, robotics, predictive maintenance, factory automation and more to help lower costs and improve efficiency.

Corning Inc., a materials science and advanced manufacturing company, will be the first company to leverage the solution, according to the announcement.

The solution will have use cases in factories, warehouses, and large business campuses and it supports unified connectivity, compute and storage without having the customer having to own the networking and IT infrastructure.

According to Verizon, the MEC solution will support a wide range of industrial applications, like autonomous mobile robots, predictive maintenance, quality assurance and near real-time monitoring and hazard alerts.

“Verizon’s Private 5G Edge platform will give customers a reliable, secure, high bandwidth, low latency connection to AWS services, APIs, and tools running on AWS Outposts,” the Verizon announcement said. “Additionally, two smaller AWS Outposts — 1U and 2U form factors — will give customers options to deploy AWS on-premises in space-constrained locations.”

The edge computing collaboration between the two companies began with the Verizon 5G Edge with AWS Wavelength, which was launched in August. The companies have announced the general availability of 5G mobile edge computing via Wavelength Zones in 10 cities across the U.S.

Private MEC is a natural expansion on the collaboration between the two companies, said Dave Brown, vice president of Elastic Compute Cloud at AWS, in a statement.

“Customers are already leveraging AWS Wavelength’s ability to provide ultra-low latency access to end users for use cases like video distribution, inference at the edge, AR/VR, and connected vehicles,” Brown said. “Now, Private 5G MEC from AWS and Verizon brings ultra-low latency to dedicated, closed, on-premises environments for use cases such as autonomous mobile robots, quality assurance, and hazard alerting.”

Source:-https://containerjournal.com/ Red Hat this week reveals it has extended its alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to include a managed […]

Source:-https://containerjournal.com/

Red Hat this week reveals it has extended its alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to include a managed Red Hat OpenShift service that the two companies will jointly provide.

Based on Kubernetes, the Red Hat OpenShift application development and deployment platform is at the core of the hybrid cloud computing strategy that Red Hat and its parent company, IBM, are betting will drive the next wave of enterprise computing.

Under the terms of the expanded alliance with AWS, the two companies are making available a managed Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) that is more tightly integrated with the AWS Console.

That offering enables customers to subscribe to Red Hat OpenShift services, which will appear on the same bill IT organizations receive for the other AWS services they consume. There are no up-front investments required to use ROSA, and IT teams only pay for the container clusters and nodes they actually consume.

Sathish Balakrishnan, vice president of hosted platforms for Red Hat, says this managed service offering is similar to a managed service offering that Red Hat offers jointly with Microsoft. Demand for managed services has increased significantly because developers have accelerated the rate at which cloud-native applications are being built, even though Kubernetes management expertise among internal IT operations teams remains in short supply.

At the same time, many IT organizations are now looking to standardize on a single Kubernetes-based platform that provides a higher level of abstraction and spans multiple clouds and on-premises IT environments, including edge computing platforms. As IT environments become more distributed, the need to rely on an external IT services provider to manage it only increases, Balakrishnan says. A common layer of abstraction will also make it easier for IT organizations to shift workloads from one cloud provider to another as business and technology considerations warrant.

Ultimately, organizations of all sizes will soon have to decide the degree to which they want to manage IT infrastructure themselves. In theory, the more they rely on an external service provider, the more internal resources they should be able to devote to new application development and deployment. Of course, there’s never been a shortage of managed service providers (MSPs). The thing that is changing most is that IT vendors are now providing these managed services themselves. Each IT organization that decides to rely more on an external service provider will need to decide if it makes sense to rely on a service provided by a vendor – that is optimized for that single vendor – versus relying on a third-party MSP capable of aggregating multiple services.

In the meantime, the rate at which cloud-native applications are being deployed across an extended enterprise is only going to increase as the overall global economy continues to steadily improve. The major IT issue of the day, now, is determining how best to achieve that goal in an era when the global economy has never been more dependent on software.
