IIT Kharagpur Invites Applications for Free Online Google Cloud Computing Foundations Course through NPTEL

IIT Kharagpur has invited applications from interested students for a free Google Cloud Computing Foundations course online, which will be conducted through National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) project. NPTEL is a project of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology and IISc, Bangalore to provide quality education to anyone interested in learning from the IITs.

The course will be conducted by Soumya K Ghosh, who is a Professor with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Before joining IIT Kharagpur, he worked for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in the area of satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems.

Apart from Ghosh, multiple faculty from Google will also be conducting classes. Some of the experts who will conduct classes are Jimmy Tran – Senior Program Manager within Google Cloud, Sowmya Kannan – Global Lead for Google Cloud Learning in Higher Education, Priyanka Vergadia – engineer at Google Cloud, Seth Vargo – engineer at Google Cloud, Alex Hanna – researcher on the ethical AI team at Google, and so on.

Who is Eligible for the IIT Kharagpur Google Cloud Computing Foundations Course?
The Google Cloud Computing Foundations course is aimed at providing students with little or no background or experience in cloud computing, a detailed overview of concepts covering cloud basics, big data, and machine learning and where and how the Google Cloud Platform fits in, says the NPTEL website. The course involves understanding concepts and perform hands-on training (via Qwiklabs platform) to practice the learning.

The course, which will be conducted online, will cover the following aspects: Introduction; So, What’s the Cloud anyway? Start with a Solid Platform; Use GCP to build your Apps; Where do I store this stuff?; There’s an API for that! You can’t secure the Cloud right?; It helps to network!; Let Google keep an eye on things. You have the data, but what are you doing with it?; and Let machines do the work.

How to Obtain Certificate for the IIT Kharagpur Google Cloud Computing Foundations Course?
Although this AICTE approved FDP course is free to enroll and learn from, those who wish to get an e-certificate would need to register and write the proctored exam conducted in person at any of the designated exam centres. The exam will be conducted on 25 April 2020 at morning session 9am to 12 noon and afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm and will cost students a sum of Rs 1000. Interested students need to hurry as the last date to enroll for the programme is 24 February 2020.

The certificate will have the candidate’s name, photograph and score in the final exam with the breakup. It will also have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur. Candidates will only receive the e-certificates and no hard copies will be dispatched.
